Wicked Ties was in fact not the first book of Shayla's that I read (it was Tempt Me with Darkness) because I had to order it. Don't you just hate it when you find a book that you really want to read, but can't find it locally so you have to order it online then wait...but Wicked Ties was definitely worth the wait. This was a 5/5 book for me, which shocked me to no end, because it was also the first book that I knew was a story that contained BDSM in it. I loved it, and if you have not read it yet, then you are missing out on one FANTASTIC READ!
I've since gone on to read her other titles in the Wicked Lovers series, and both Wicked Ties and Decadent have made their way onto my keeper shelf. That's how much I love them. Shayla took some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions, and for her "Luc" fans keep reading because their is a brand new excerpt from Luc's story Delicious in this post!
She didn’t know what she wanted until he made her beg for it...
Morgan O’Malley has seen a lot of kinky things as the hostess of a cable sex talk show. But she’s never met a man like Jack Cole before. A self-proclaimed dominant, he’s as alpha as a male can get–and good for Morgan to have around when an obsessed stalker ratchets up his attempts to get to her.
Though Jack is a bodyguard, Morgan feels anything but safe in his presence. Because slowly and seductively, Jack is bringing her deepest fantasies to the surface. And when he bends her to his will, what’s more shocking than her surrender is how much she enjoys it–and starts to crave his masterful touch. A willing player in Jack’s games, Morgan knows that his motives aren’t pure, but she has no idea how personal they are…
- Welcome to Seductive Musings, Shayla. For readers who don’t already know your work please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Here’s my official bio:
Shayla Black (aka Shelley Bradley) is the national bestselling author of 25+ sizzling contemporary, erotic, paranormal, and historical romances for multiple print and electronic publishers. She lives in Texas with her husband, munchkin, and one very spoiled cat. In her “free” time, she enjoys reality TV, reading and listening to an eclectic blend of music.
Shayla has won or placed in over a dozen writing contests, including Passionate Ink’s Passionate Plume, Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence, and the National Reader’s Choice Awards. Romantic Times has awarded her Top Picks, a KISS Hero Award and a nomination for Best Erotic Romance.
A writing risk-taker, Shayla enjoys tackling writing challenges with every book.
- Why did you decide to become a romance writer?
From the time I was little, I made up stories in my head. They were almost always romances. I love exploring the chemistry between characters in a romantic relationship, see them get to know each other, learn each other, grow enough as individuals to deserve and appreciate their happiness. I love writing the sexual tension and banter and resolutions. To be happy in any career, I’d need a challenge every day. With this job, not only am I challenged, but I get to exercise my creativity. Along with flexible hours, it doesn’t get much better. :)
- You write books as Shayla Black and Shelley Bradley. What types of books are written under each name?
I began as Shelley Bradley. I wrote 9 historicals and a handful of contemporary romances. Shelley Bradley books are steamy, bordering on erotic. I call it “sizzle from the heart.” Shayla Black books are erotic, envelope pushing, unapologetic. Since launching Shayla in 2007, I’ve sold 12 paranormal and erotic romances. In these books, I’m always trying to go deep and explore new boundaries. So I classify my Shayla books as “the wicked edge of romance.”
- Wicked Ties is categorized as an erotic romance. What do you think makes a great love scene, especially when incorporating BDSM elements?
Emotion and character/relationship/plot development. A great love scene has to be more than the sum of its parts. You can’t just describe people having sex. By itself, that’s only passingly interesting at best. Readers want to feel involved with the relationship in a romance novel, and the sex is no exception. So, as an author, my job is to make it accessible, give the reader something they can experience and feel, while making sure it forwards the character, relationship or plot. All three if I can manage it.
- When I asked some fellow readers what Shayla Black book they would recommend to read first for a new reader the OVERWHELMING response was Wicked Ties. They could not type quickly enough to express their love for "Jack". What do you think makes readers so ga-ga for "Jack"?
I can’t speak for everyone else, but I loved a few things about Jack. First, his intensity. When he focused his attention on Morgan is was deep and unwavering. Nothing was making that man move. I think another thing was the fact he was human and wasn’t afraid to admit it. I’ve read D/s books where the hero tries so hard to be the perfect Dom and will never admit a mistake, lest he appear weak. Jack was full of faults—and he knew it. When he was wrong, he said he was wrong. When he was right, he was relentless. Also, I think Jack had a tender side. He didn’t always express it gently, but when he cared, he cared deeply. He was also absolutely dedicated to protecting Morgan, and ultimately, to making her happy. The fact he was damn inventive in bed didn’t hurt, either.
- What do you think is the appeal/temptation for Morgan to accept Jack’s offer to sample this alternative lifestyle, when intellectually she seems wary to the concept of BDSM?
She knows deep down that she wants what Jack is offering. Part of his challenge is to make her see it. He senses in her everything he’s long wanted. But words alone don’t convince her. Sex alone doesn’t either. Once Morgan understands that BDSM isn’t about being someone’s doormat, but about total trust and a deep bond, she starts to open her mind. Coupled with the fact she already knows “vanilla” relationships don’t do it for her and that her feelings for Jack are growing, persuade her to embrace what she needs.
- The Wicked Lover series, of which Wicked Ties is book 1, seems to address many erotic romance subjects. In Wicked Ties (#1) it was BDSM, Decadent (#2) was Ménage. What can readers look for in Delicious (#3) & Surrender to Me (#4)?
Delicious is probably the most emotional read of the series to date. Luc (whom readers met in DECADENT) is still facing his demons (which if you haven’t read DECADENT, I won’t spoil for you). He’s trying very to get his life together, find the “right” woman and do the right things. But his past comes back to haunt him. Here’s the official book blurb. It will likely be more articulate:
He can’t control his desire.
Luc Traverson’s entire future is planned out—but there is one very sexy obstacle in his path: Alyssa Devereaux . She’s a former exotic dancer turned strip club owner and restaurateur. Recently, Alyssa and Luc shared one night of wild abandon that left Luc terrified by his loss of self-control—and Alyssa desperate for more.
And that’s just the way she wants it.
Fulfilling a promise, Luc is the guest chef for Alyssa’s restaurant debut. The sight of her makes Luc wild, so how can he survive a week without letting loose and ravaging her—especially when she’s begging for it? Luc’s desire for her explodes when he realizes he isn’t the only man desperate to have her. But one of the others is deadly. And that’s not the end of Alyssa’s secrets…which are as dark and mysterious and enticing as her fantasies.
I LOVE the way this book turned out. Luc and Alyssa go on what I think is an amazing journey to find each other. I can’t wait to share it with readers!
SURRENDER TO ME is about Hunter Edgington. He’s the Navy SEAL with the icy demeanor. This book is in the planning stages. Hunter doesn’t divulge his secrets easily, not even to me, so I’m still wringing information out of him (which I know sounds odd if you’re not a writer, but true!) What he has told me is jaw-dropping. I can’t wait to piece together this story and figure how he’s gotten into (and how I’m supposed to get him out of) this mess. Let’s say that he never planned on stealing a buddy’s girl, but…
- For someone who has not discovered Wicked Ties yet, or any book in this series, how would you convince someone to read it?
I’d say a couple of things: First, if you read for emotion and character, I’m your sort of writer. That’s where a story lives for me. My books are not without action, but the focus is squarely on the characters and what they feel. I would also say that if you’ve never tried erotic romance and you like it hot, you’re missing out. It’s a great genre. Or if you’re used to a more traditional romance and are just looking for something different, erotic romance may be just what you’re looking for.
- What are some of your upcoming releases we can look forward to?
Three releases in my paranormal Doomsday Brethren series:
“Fated” FREE eBook novella – August
SEDUCE ME IN SHADOW – October
POSSESS ME AT MIDNIGHT (a personal favorite) – November
The next in the Wicked Lover series:
DELICIOUS – March 2010
SURRENDER TO ME – September 2010
I’m also working on a duet anthology with Maya Banks called Fourplay. My story is called Her Fantasy Men, which I’m writing right now. I’m having a blast!
- Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?
Something like “Don’t settle for less than your best.”
And now for a very special treat, Shayla provided an unedited excerpt (which means it could still change) from Delicious (Luc's story). I can tell you it makes me even more excited to read this! I can't wait. I've already pre-ordered mine at Amazon (and it's on sale!)I’m going to sink inside you so deeply, you won’t ever forget I was here.
Alyssa Devereaux shuddered at the memory of that growled promise, as she’d been surrounded by taut muscles and male need.
Luc Traverson. Even his name caused heat to stab her belly with want. He’d kept every bit of that promise; she’d never forgotten him for a moment.
The night he’d spent in her bed had been amazing, magical. Considering she’d long ago given up on fairy tales, that was saying something. Being enveloped in Luc’s steely strength had been paradise. His stare that night had made her feel as if she wasn’t just a desirable woman, but the only woman. The intimacy…oh God. Sizzling, way beyond making her toes curl, he’d given her a whole new definition of pleasure. His endless dark eyes burned as he slammed in with powerful strokes, his long, midnight hair draped around their faces, cutting off all reality but his whispered demands and rough breathing as he rode her from one orgasm to the next.
He’d brought her body to a fever pitch—to places she’d never believed a man could take her. He had done it again and again. For six hours. Never tiring, never satisfied. Greedy, rapacious, and amazing.
She’d had enough sex in her life to know they’d shared something way more. The next morning…gone. No note, no explanation. A few days later, he’d sent flowers with an apology for any discomfort or pain he might have caused. She’d been pissed off, a bit hurt…but not surprised.
Still, she wasn’t willing to give up. For the chance to see Luc again, Alyssa had broken her own rule and called him. Twice. He’d never returned her calls personally. Instead, his assistant had called merely to say that he would keep his terms of their arrangement. Nothing more.
She’d been nothing to him. Yes, she’d known before their night together that he didn’t respect her. They’d first met when she’d stripped at his buddy’s bachelor party a few years back. Somehow, she’d hoped opening herself completely to Luc would change his mind.
Still, he was everything she’d ever wanted in a man: attractive, successful, capable of deep caring, sensitive, sexy… She wasn’t giving him up without a fight.
“Afternoon, boss lady.” Tyler Murphy sent her a long, low whistle, his stare taking a meandering path down her body as she emerged from the back of the club and stopped before the stage. “You’re looking very fine.”
“Tyler,” she greeted the sandy-haired giant. “Your job is to watch the patrons, not me.”
“Since we’re not open yet, there’s no one here to bounce. Besides, I’m not into ogling drunken frat boys or horny married men. What color are your garters under that little black skirt?”
Her bouncer was a former law enforcement of some variety—he’d never said which kind—college educated with a degree in engineering. Tyler had a lot going for him. Why he’d taken a job here as a bouncer was anyone’s guess. But in the few months he’d been with her, he’d proven himself indispensable. There were days her business needed him.
It was too bad, really, that her heart didn’t need Tyler as well. From beneath her lashes, she sent him a chiding stare. “I’ll never tell.”
“Aw, c’mon. Throw a guy a bone.”
Alyssa glanced down at his crotch. “Looks like you’ve got your own.” Tyler winked and sent her a flirty grin. “All for you.”
He was good looking, built like something on the front of a bodybuilding magazine, smart, funny, dependable. But after long days of running Sexy Sirens, Lafayette, Louisiana’s most notorious strip club, and trying to start up a new restaurant, by the time she fell into her solitary bed at night, it wasn’t thoughts of Tyler that made her ache. That honor was reserved solely for Luc Traverson.
And after a bit more than three months apart, he would be here today.
Feel me. Yessss. You’re so tight, so good. That’s it, sugar. Come for me. Again.
Luc’s voice, sin wrapped in velvet, dipped in honey, wouldn’t leave her head. Even the memory made heat rise inside her. Thoughts of that night always had the power to daze and stun her. She wanted it again. Him again.
“Hello? Earth to Alyssa.”
Tyler. Oops. “Sorry. The restaurant is weighing so heavily on my mind these days.”
He stared at her from green eyes that saw too much. “So clean plates and menus give you that flushed, wanna-get-fucked look?”
“Why aren’t you finding some drunken slobs to rough up?”
“I’d rather be with you.”
Tyler crossed his arms over his wide chest. His biceps bulged under his body-hugging black t-shirt. He really was gorgeous. And he wanted her; he’d made no secret about that. She could do worse.
“What’s his name?” Tyler sighed.
“The man who put that needy look on your face. I don’t know whether I want to bust him up or shake his hand.”
“There’s no one in my life.” Which, technically, was true. Other than her hook up with Luc, she hadn’t had sex in years.
At this point in the conversation, Tyler usually teased that he’d be more than happy to be that someone. This afternoon, he seemed to sense something was different.
“You’re too good to be alone. The girls all worship you. You treat everyone fairly and work damn hard. You’re sweeter than you give yourself credit for. You haven’t resorted to murder when that asshole Councilman Primpton comes around, making trouble.” He sent her a considering stare. “You’ve had it tough lately. You deserve a break.”
If she wasn’t careful, his caring would make her cry. A pity party would be marvelously easy to indulge in—and an utter waste of time.
Alyssa anchored her hands on her hips. “Not in the cards.”
“Maybe you should postpone the restaurant opening for a few weeks.”
Restraint left Tyler, and he reached out a solid hand, and with it, smoothed her arm in a soothing gesture. “Your mama has only been gone two weeks.”
She tensed. “I hadn’t seen her in fourteen years.”
“Doesn’t matter. You’re still dealing with her loss.”
She’d done so with mixed feelings. Anger, grief, sadness, rage, a need to rail at the woman who had done nothing to help or understand her. Pity that she’d been so self-absorbed.
And beside her grave had stood the black-hearted reason for the rift between them: Joshua. Even after a dozen years, beyond a hundred feet, and through a pair of two-hundred dollar sunglasses, there was no mistaking the boyish-faced bastard. At least he hadn’t seen her. If he had, Lord knows what he would have done.
She shook off the thought.
“Tyler, thanks for your concern, but I’ve put too much time and energy into this opening to put it off. I need to get it off the ground for cash flow purposes. Besides, what good would wallowing about my mom do?”
He cupped her shoulders in a tender gesture. “You left here at three this morning, and Jessica told me you were back by eight. Baby, you’ve got to sleep and give yourself time to grieve.”
She’d rather not.
Leaning forward, she placed a soft kiss on his cheek. “You’re going to make some woman a great husband someday.”
“You asking me?”
Alyssa snorted. “Do I look like the white picket fence type? Get your ass back to work.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He saluted her and turned away, only to turn back again. “Oh, I forgot to tell you, some guy is here to see you. Some chef.”
“Luc Traverson?” she breathed.
“Yeah. He said you two had an appointment. He didn’t look too happy. Is he the dude doing the guest chef gig this week?”
Tyler’s question registered, but she didn’t answer. Instead, she glanced around Tyler, to the club’s front door.
Boom! There he stood, all six feet plus of him, his elegant, rangy body tense. The sight of him was like a visceral blow. She swallowed…and let her hungry gaze eat him up. Inky hair hanging around his wide shoulders, jeans hugging him in all the right places. Those dark, burning eyes. A hot flush swept up her body. Her heart didn’t just start racing faster; it careened out of control. Far more than her palms went damp. She swayed in dizzy excitement.
Tyler caught her, his beefy hands slid around her waist to steady her, then glanced back toward the door. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Him?”
Oh, yeah. Definitely him.
“Shut up, Tyler.” She pulled away and took a decisive step forward.
Luc Traverson was here. Finally. She did her best to hide a sly smile. There was no way he was going to ignore her anymore; she’d make certain of that.
