Guest Author & Giveaway: Rita Herron featuring Dark Hunger

Thursday, August 13

***This contest is now over. Thanks for entering!***

Reporter Annabelle Armstrong will go to any lengths to deliver a story, even track down Quinton Valtrez, a man she believes is a coldhearted assassin. Yet the truth about the darkly sensual Quinton is even more shocking...and the overwhelming desire he ignites is one she vows to resist.

Quinton has fought his demonic powers since he was a child. Now using his gifts for the good of national security, he can't let himself be distracted by the beautiful, determined Annabelle. But his need for her is sudden, fierce--and could soon cost Annabelle her life. For a wicked enemy is out for vengeance, a demon who wants to draw Quinton into a life of pure evil and is willing to use Annabelle as bait. To save her, Quinton must achieve the near impossible: tame the sinister force that is both his inheritance and his curse before it claims him forever.

My special guest today at Seductive Musings is the lovely and gracious Rita Herron. Rita took a some time out of her busy promoting schedule to answer a few questions about her newest book Dark Hunger.

Welcome to Seductive Musings Rita, for readers who don’t already know your work please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Born and bred in the South, storytelling has always been a way of life. I actually wanted to write as a child, but didn’t think real people wrote books so earned a teaching degree and taught kindergarten for ten years. While teaching, my love of storytelling returned and I decided to pursue writing children’s books. I wrote nine books for the Sweet Valley Kids series, then was invited to a romance writer’s meeting. Once I started, reading romance I was hooked!

Twelve years ago, I sold my first two books a day apart -- a romantic comedy to Kensington, then a romantic suspense to Harlequin Intrigue. Since then I’ve written over 50 books, including comedies, family stories, romantic suspense, and now paranormal romantic suspense.

My romantic suspense and paranormal books tend to be dark, gritty, edgy, sexy thrillers. I’m also intrigued by folk legends, myths and interesting settings, and incorporate them into my stories as much as possible.

In your downtime what do you like to read and what are some of your favorite books?

Downtime? What’s that? LOL.

Seriously, I love to hang out with my family, shop, read, sew and do crafts. I picked up quilting from my mom although I don’t have as much time for it now as I’d like. And my favorite vacation is the beach – I fantasize about owning a house by the ocean some day.

Favorite authors: Stephanie Bond, Karen Rose,Jennifer St. Giles, Jennifer LaBrecque, Allison Brennan, Debra Webb, Karen White, Wendy Wax, Lisa Jackson, Haywood Smith, and Tami Hoag.

Why did you decide to become a romance writer, and what is it about writing romance that appeals to you?

I always enjoyed reading mysteries, then started reading romance, and knew I wanted to blend my favorite genres in my own writing. I like writing and reading romance because the stories are so varied and inspiring. They tell about couples who overcome obstacles to find love when love seems impossible. The news and the world are filled with so many negative images and impressions that romance novels offer us a positive outlook and hope.

Dark Hunger is the second book in your Demonborn paranormal romance series. Tells us more about your hero Quinton Valtrez, and Dark Hunger.

Quinton is Vincent’s brother from Insatiable Desire, and is also a Dark Lord – born from a demon and an Angel of Light, so he possesses both good and evil in his soul. He’s tortured and alpha like Vincent, but he was raised by Monks and has a spiritual side and a wicked sense of humor.

He’s also a cold-blooded assassin.

As the book begins, Annabelle Armstrong, a CNN reporter, is determined to expose his secrets.

But Quinton’s demonic father Zion wants his sons to walk by his side and will use anyone he cares about to trap him, including Annabelle. Zion has sent the Death Angel to kill in the masses, so Quinton must join forces with Annabelle to stop the mass murders.

How interconnected are the Demonborn novels? If a reader hasn't read Insatiable Desire, can they jump in at Dark Hunger and not feel lost, or should they read ID first?

The books are interconnected in that they build on each other as far as the brother’s relationships with each other and with their father, but they also can stand-alone. Each one has a self-contained mystery and focuses on a love/romance between one of the brothers and a woman. But of course, I’d recommend starting with the first book!

Can you tell us a little bit about Forbidden Passion, book 3 in the Demonborn series?

Forbidden Passion is the story of Dante, the third Dark Lord, and delves even deeper into the paranormal world. Dr. Marlena Bender from Insatiable Desire resurfaces, and is continuing her study of deviant behavior through blood experiments.

Here’s the back cover blurb which I just received!

Fueled by her family’s murder years ago, Dr. Marlena Bender has devoted her life to understanding violent criminals. But when a serial killer in this small Southern town takes the lives of women in diabolical ways—leaving trophies of his kills on Marlena’s doorstep—it all hits too close to home. Terrified, Marlena turns to the only man she can trust...the man who saved her life.

Sheriff Dante Valtrez would move heaven and earth to keep Marlena safe, but he's not the savior she thinks he is. A dark legacy runs through his blood and a dangerous secret lies within him. Now a fierce, hot, ruthless desire draws them together-as a demonic force from Dante's past threatens to rip them apart, destroying everything they hold dear.

I loved the Demonborn website. I especially liked all of the character profiles. It really brings the world that you have created to life. It is obvious that a lot of time and planning went into envisioning this world that is so different from your other writing. Tell us how the Demonborn series came into being.

I’m glad you enjoyed the site! I had such fun creating this series, and envisioned this entire world of demons living in the real world – to me that was far more terrifying than demons in a total fantasy world. As far as this series being different from my other writing – in some of my HQN books I began using the setting more as a character and really felt like it added atmosphere. I’d also begun sprinkling in paranormal elements in those books, and enjoy using myths and legends to add to the flavor of the mystery. When I decided I wanted to intensify the paranormal elements, I knew I wanted to write the same type of general story – romance and suspense. But this time, my cops would be chasing demons.

I’ve always been intrigued by the nature versus argument – are people born evil? And since I like the theme of good versus evil as a suspense plot, I decided to layer the story by creating heroes that were also battling that evil within themselves. Thus, the Demonborn was born!

What are some of your upcoming releases we can look forward to?

Forbidden Passion is the last book in this trilogy, and my agent, editor and I are discussing what will come next. I do have planned another romantic suspense trilogy (not sure how much paranormal yet.) I’m also working on a YA paranormal suspense series, and I have a screenplay, paranormal romantic suspense, that I’m dying to write.

In addition, I have more projects scheduled from Harlequin Intrigue. Titles include His Secret Christmas Baby (Guardian Angel Investigations), Dec. 2009, Rawhide Ranger, March 2010, and another installment in my Guardian Angel Investigations series later in 2010.

For someone who has not discovered your books yet how would you convince someone to give them a try?

Hmm, I’d say if you like Karen Rose and Larissa Ione, I’m a combination of the two. My stories are dark, gritty, erotic, filled with romance and suspense, and in the case of the Demonborn, also paranormal!

Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

LOL, every writer’s dream!

Fortune cookie: The Times List is just around the corner!

Here are 5 fun facts about Rita and Dark Hunger:

1. I set Dark Hunger in three of my favorite cites, Savannah, Charleston, and New Orleans because they’re all haunted and possess an eerie atmosphere – perfect places for the Death Angel. The B & B with the outdoor garden where Annabelle stays in Savannah is fashioned after a B & B where my husband and I stayed. And Shayla Larue is modeled after a voodoo priestess I met at the RWA conference in New Orleans.

2. Emily Nelson, the social worker in the book, is named after my daughter who’s a dedicated social worker in real life.

3. The idea of the Death Angel taking a vulture’s form came from a brainstorming session with two author friends at a writer’s retreat near Charleston. I’d been flirting with other forms but, when the vulture idea came up, I knew it was perfect—creepy and symbolic of bad luck, evil and death.

4. Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds inspired me as I was writing Dark Hunger. I also envisioned David Gray’s song “One With the Birds” as the soundtrack for the movie.

5. When I was a child, I knew a preacher who inspired me to create Reverend Narius. He was a hellfire and damnation type who yelled and stalked up and down the aisles during his sermon. It was as if he was singling you out to let you know you were going to hell. I was terrified of him!

Multi-published, award-winning author Rita Herron cut her teeth on mystery books and television shows like Alfred Hitchcock, The Outer Limits and the Twilight Zone. More recently, she’s added Medium, The Ghost Whisperer, and Dead Zone to her list of favorites.

With her new series THE DEMONBORN, she blends her love of dark, steamy romantic suspense stories with her other love -- the paranormal.

Set in the contemporary world, she explores the age-old battle of good versus evil and that battle as it rages within each person. And of course, the ultimate question for the romantic – can love conquer all? Rita also writes romantic suspense.

Friend of mine gave me my copy of Insatiable Desire. It was an extra (she bought two). I remember, the book was being featured on a blog, and the review was just so "Gotta have it" when my friend IMs me going "Psst, that was in the box of books I sent down."

I was currently reading another book, but I put that down and to teh side because I got so immersed. After I finished, I wanted more. So I'm hoping to get this book soon just so I can read it.
