Jane Austen...and why we still love her

Thursday, August 27

This week Royal Reviews has dedicated an entire week to Mr. Darcy….sigh. How can you not love Darcy…and Col. Brandon…and Edward? It got me to thinking about Jane and her novels. Ask just about any romance reader who their favorite authors are and more than likely Jane Austen will be mentioned almost every time....and for good reason IMHO. I mean just look at all of the new novels based on her original characters. I don't know the actual stats but I would have to think that her original 7 novels have helped sluggish book sales in today's economy immensely. Maybe they should declare her a stimulus package:)

It’s been a while since I read a “Janeish” book, but Pride and Prejudice remains one of my all time favorites. Elizabeth Bennett is such a fantastic heroine. However, as I grow older I find myself drawn more and more to Anne Elliot from Persuasion. It’s Jane’s wallflower book that never gets invited to dance like Pride and Prejudice, or Sense and Sensibility. It’s quieter story, but nonetheless just as compelling and powerful. Jane wrote some of the best heroes, and heroines that are so very timeless. Her stories are all about the characters and their relationships with family, friends and lovers…it’s one of the reasons why I think they translate so well and so many authors find success in building off of the original books. Not to mention the fact that you are going to be hard pressed to find fans as devoted as hers.

In my Jane quest I took a quiz “Which Jane Austen heroine are you?” Have you taken it? According to the quiz I am Elinor Dashwood :) But really I think I am a little bit Elizabeth, a sprinkle of Emma, dash of Elinor, and probably more Anne than I would like to admit (hard time saying no, and putting others before myself). Maybe that’s why her characters are so timeless. We are a little bit like each one of them…at least at some point in our lives.

Which Jane Austen hero is your favorite? I found the “Men of Austen” on the PBS site recently and was practically giddy (sad... isn't it). It lists their likes, dislikes, turn ons and offs, ages, favorite things...income in today's terms. Haven't you always wondered what 10,000 pounds per annum equates to in dollars today? I couldn’t resist, I loved going through all of the profiles then voting on my favorite…of course my fav is Darcy…especially when he is played by Colin Firth…nuff said. I think anyone who has seen the A&E version remembers the scene at the lake. One of my favorite moments from the Bridget Jones series is when she interviews Colin Firth and is totally fixated on this particular scene from the miniseries… makes me laugh just thinking about it. I have heard rumors that there will be another book in this series from Helen Fielding. I hope so because I loved them.

Have you seen the Lost in Austen series? I haven’t yet, but I hope to soon. And last night while preparing this post I found a new blog that I spent hours on…Jane Austen Today. I love love love this blog, and will be visiting it often. It has tons of great giveaways (for booklovers like me)….previews new books, movies and television shows/series related to Jane Austen in some way, polls, commentary, pictures. Did I mention that I loved it :)

All of this really does have a point. Tomorrow is the very first Hidden Gems meme post, and my hidden gem is a book based on Elizabeth and Darcy’s story. Can you guess which one it is? Find out tomorrow, and I hope you share your own Hidden Gem. And tell me...are you Jane crazy like I am? If so what are some of your fav books, movies, and websites.

Thank you so much for mentioning Royal Reviews and our Mr Darcy week. I haven't read Persuasion but I do have a copy. Think I'll try and read it before the year ends. This was a great post!

Looking forward to your Meme!

I really love your poll and think it's a great idea! Would you mind if we do something similar on Royal Reviews?

According to the JA quiz...I'm Elizabeth Bennet.

I'm not a huge JA fan, but some of the movies are okay.

I've mentioned the quiz on my blog...here's the link:

Have had a wonderful time checking out the links to this post.
According to the quiz, I am Anne Elliot of Persuasion.
The Collin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice is one of my two all time favorite movies, Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis is the other.

I've taken the Jane Austen Poll, lol! The book 'Bargain With The Devil' looks really good! I have to check that one out.

My FREE Kindle Quest

I've wanted a Kindle for what seems like forever, but haven't been able to afford it (and that's saying something since I can justify the cost of just about ANYTHING that I really want). I've tried winning one in one of the many giveaways that have taken place over the couple of years, but with no luck :( So I've decided to take matters in hand so to speak :) I've now decided that I am going to accumulate enough Swagbucks from my Swabucks searches to buy one...so in essence my new Kindle will be FREE...funded entirely by my internet searches done on Swagbucks. I'll keep you informed of the Great Kindle Quest below (in case you're interested....if not feel free to just skip over this part, but really who wouldn't be interested in a FREE Kindle?)
Goal: $119
Current Swagbucks Amazon Gift Card balance: $90.00
If you'd like to learn how you can earn Swagbucks and earn your own Amazon Gift Cards to buy books, a Kindle or other merchandise sold at Amazon contact me and I would be more than happy to tell you how I plan to go about it. (just so you know you can earn both Amazon.com and Amazon.ca gift cards on this rewards site)
