Today I have the great pleasure of having Lorelei James as our guest on Seductive Musings. Her Rough Rider series books were the first e-books that I purchased....and as the saying goes, the rest is history. She writes contemporary romances that are emotionally compelling that have some smokin' hot love scenes, and is one of my favorite authors.
Whether her books are novels, or short stories I have NEVER been disappointed, which if you've read any of my reviews you know that almost never happens. So without further ado, please welcome Lorelei James....
No, this is not some kind of Rah! Rah! promo for my recent release, MISS FIRECRACKER, although, if you really want to skip on over to My Bookstore and More and pick up a copy, I won’t stop you, in fact, I’ll even provide a handy-dandy link.
One of the reasons the 4th of July is my favorite holiday (yep, it beats out Christmas) is because we always had a family reunion at my grandparents farm in eastern South Dakota around that time of year. My aunts, uncles and cousins showed up from all over the country. At night we’d sit outside in the almost pure blackness and look at the stars, chasing fireflies in the cornfield, telling ghost stories, and trying to convince the little kids to go “snipe” hunting with us. During the day we’d build forts in the shelterbelt, climb trees and crawl on abandoned farm machinery, play “pioneers” in the granary, get in trouble with Grandpa for sneaking into barn, get yelled at by Grandpa for sneaking in to the pasture housing the bulls (Hey, we were city kids, how we were supposed to know the bulls were dangerous? They just stood there…until they started chasing you…talk about fast!) We had no curfew. Our parents let us run free, because really, how much trouble can kids get into out in the middle of nowhere South Dakota? (Lots, as they found out later, when we shared some of the stunts we pulled in our youth and finally explained why there always seemed to be beer and chokecherry wine missing from the cellar.) Grandma baked a billion kinds of frosted bars and cookies and treats. And if we asked real nice, she would play the piano and we’d all sing and dance and laugh—and we’d head outside into the sultry night air and play hide and seek until we were exhausted or until the bugs ate us alive. Some of my fondest memories are of that time of year, so is it any wonder when I became engaged, the day I picked for my wedding, was July 6th? The closest I could get to the perfect day, the 4th of July.
In addition to the family times, the food, and the summer heat, my other favorite thing about the 4th was the…fireworks. Oh man, do I love firecrackers. Still, to this day, I love to comb the aisles of the fireworks store for new items to blow up. I like fun ones and loud ones and colorful ones and I’ve been known to spend an entire week’s grocery budget on snakes, chickens, black cats, screaming monkeys, jumping frogs (what is up with the animal themed names?) bottle rockets, smoke bombs, whistling rockets, Roman candles, spinning flowers, sparklers…I think I’ve tried them all and it’s something I’ve never outgrown. I’ve even passed the love of pyrotechnics to my family. A few years back, my husband made a sparkler detonation device in a coffee can (I hesitate to use the “B” word because of Homeland Security issues) and talk about a loud boom! It was beautiful and scary and the perfect anniversary gift.
This year we won’t be heading to the farm to partake of the Independence Day festivities with my family. It’s hard for me, because although the farmhouse is still there (but not the barn) it’s not the same without my grandparents around. I know they’re there in spirit, but I do miss Grandpa yelling at us not to aim the bottle rockets at the hay field and my Grandma’s delicious lemon bars, mine never taste the same as hers even when I follow her recipe exactly. Instead, I’ll be at the rodeo, drinking beer, getting sunburned, cheering on the cowboys who aren’t afraid of climbing on bulls and broncs…and soaking up every minute of my favorite day of the year.
