I love the 4th of July! by Lorelei James

Tuesday, June 30

***The winners have been chosen and posted. Thanks to everyone who entered!
Please check back next week for 3 new giveaways!!! ***

Today I have the great pleasure of having Lorelei James as our guest on Seductive Musings. Her Rough Rider series books were the first e-books that I purchased....and as the saying goes, the rest is history. She writes contemporary romances that are emotionally compelling that have some smokin' hot love scenes, and is one of my favorite authors.

Whether her books are novels, or short stories I have NEVER been disappointed, which if you've read any of my reviews you know that almost never happens. So without further ado, please welcome Lorelei James....

No, this is not some kind of Rah! Rah! promo for my recent release, MISS FIRECRACKER, although, if you really want to skip on over to My Bookstore and More and pick up a copy, I won’t stop you, in fact, I’ll even provide a handy-dandy link.

One of the reasons the 4th of July is my favorite holiday (yep, it beats out Christmas) is because we always had a family reunion at my grandparents farm in eastern South Dakota around that time of year. My aunts, uncles and cousins showed up from all over the country. At night we’d sit outside in the almost pure blackness and look at the stars, chasing fireflies in the cornfield, telling ghost stories, and trying to convince the little kids to go “snipe” hunting with us. During the day we’d build forts in the shelterbelt, climb trees and crawl on abandoned farm machinery, play “pioneers” in the granary, get in trouble with Grandpa for sneaking into barn, get yelled at by Grandpa for sneaking in to the pasture housing the bulls (Hey, we were city kids, how we were supposed to know the bulls were dangerous? They just stood there…until they started chasing you…talk about fast!) We had no curfew. Our parents let us run free, because really, how much trouble can kids get into out in the middle of nowhere South Dakota? (Lots, as they found out later, when we shared some of the stunts we pulled in our youth and finally explained why there always seemed to be beer and chokecherry wine missing from the cellar.) Grandma baked a billion kinds of frosted bars and cookies and treats. And if we asked real nice, she would play the piano and we’d all sing and dance and laugh—and we’d head outside into the sultry night air and play hide and seek until we were exhausted or until the bugs ate us alive. Some of my fondest memories are of that time of year, so is it any wonder when I became engaged, the day I picked for my wedding, was July 6th? The closest I could get to the perfect day, the 4th of July.

In addition to the family times, the food, and the summer heat, my other favorite thing about the 4th was the…fireworks. Oh man, do I love firecrackers. Still, to this day, I love to comb the aisles of the fireworks store for new items to blow up. I like fun ones and loud ones and colorful ones and I’ve been known to spend an entire week’s grocery budget on snakes, chickens, black cats, screaming monkeys, jumping frogs (what is up with the animal themed names?) bottle rockets, smoke bombs, whistling rockets, Roman candles, spinning flowers, sparklers…I think I’ve tried them all and it’s something I’ve never outgrown. I’ve even passed the love of pyrotechnics to my family. A few years back, my husband made a sparkler detonation device in a coffee can (I hesitate to use the “B” word because of Homeland Security issues) and talk about a loud boom! It was beautiful and scary and the perfect anniversary gift.

This year we won’t be heading to the farm to partake of the Independence Day festivities with my family. It’s hard for me, because although the farmhouse is still there (but not the barn) it’s not the same without my grandparents around. I know they’re there in spirit, but I do miss Grandpa yelling at us not to aim the bottle rockets at the hay field and my Grandma’s delicious lemon bars, mine never taste the same as hers even when I follow her recipe exactly. Instead, I’ll be at the rodeo, drinking beer, getting sunburned, cheering on the cowboys who aren’t afraid of climbing on bulls and broncs…and soaking up every minute of my favorite day of the year.

Teaser Tuesday: Miss Firecracker, My Forbidden Desire, & A Hint of Wicked

"Unlike her, he wasn’t naked. However, he looked damn fine clothed. And was there anything sexier than a hunky bare-chested man filling out a pair of hip-hugging jeans to perfection? Her head protested the exertion of imagining Blake West wearing nothing but his dimples..." Ch. 1 from Miss Firecracker by Lorelei James

From the Publisher:

She’s the match, he’s the fuse…an explosive combination

One year ago Willow Gregory entered the Miss Firecracker contest on a dare—and ended up with the crown. As a working carpenter, she’s not exactly the tears-and-tiara type, and after a year of walking the straight and narrow she’s ready to cut loose.

Waking up in a sexy stranger’s bed with no memory of the havoc she wreaked the night before wasn’t quite what she had in mind. Nor was agreeing to his mandate—work for him at the tavern until she repays the damage. Or go to jail.

Blake West thinks he could possibly be the only man alive who could say no to a drunken, horny, naked beauty queen. There’s something about the former Miss Firecracker that makes him want to blow his Mr. Nice Guy persona all to hell.

It helps that Willow is ready to dive headfirst into a no-heartstrings-attached affair. Which fits in perfectly with Blake’s temporary gig managing his friend’s bar.

Every grinding kiss, every stolen touch leads to another…until a harmless little white lie becomes the detonator that could explode their chances at a happily ever after.

From the publisher:

Or will it be Tristan, beloved friend turned lover, who supported her through the last, dark years and introduced her to a passion she had never known? As her two husbands battle for her heart, Sophie finds herself immersed in a dangerous game-where the stakes are not only love . . . but life and death.

Review:

I started reading A Hint of Wicked late one night thinking I would just read a few pages before I went to sleep, but quickly found myself completely absorbed in the love triangle between childhood friends and unable to put it down.

Garrett, the Duke of Calton, fell in love and had been happily married to Sophie for four years when he is called to duty to fight in the battle of Waterloo where he is wounded and presumed dead. Seven grief stricken years pass, and during that time best friends Sophie and Tristan, the new Duke of Calton, find solace in each others arms, fall in love and marry.

After eight years of being missing Garrett returns wanting to resume his old life, only to find he has been proclaimed dead, his heir has become the new Duke of Calton, and his wife is now married to the man he once considered as close as a brother. How does he begin to get his life and his wife back? Does Tristan resolve himself to losing everything that he holds dear...Sophie? And how does Sophie choose between Garrett whom she loved passionately in her youth, and Tristan whom she loves deeply as a grown woman?

A Hint of Wicked is the first historical romance this year I have reviewed that I can honestly say that I loved. I had been eager to read this one form the moment I first read about it, and was actually a little bit wary that I might have built it up too much in my head, and as a result setting myself up for disappointment. Don't despair if you have read an abundance of mediocre historical romances lately like I have. Never fear Wicked is here to end the doldrums!

This is the first novel that I have read by Jennifer Haymore so I did not know what to expect. Now I know. I should expect a compelling story with intrigue, lots of emotion, very steamy loves scenes for a traditional historical romance, and I should plan to devour it in one sitting...everything else can wait. I honestly could not put the book down. I had to find out who Sophie would choose, and surprisingly I was not able to guess until the very end of the book. It was that well written. I will eagerly be anticipating the next book in the series, A Touch of Scandal, her sequel to A Hint of Wicked, which was wickedly good.

Review:

Alexandrine is a witch that was abandoned at the age of three by her father due to her lack of magical power. In her journey of self discovery she finds a talisman (an evil source of magical power) created by the very father she has been seeking. Now an adult, Alexandrine with her growing magical ability due to the dangerous talisman, struggles to find her place in the world and is caught in the middle of a battle for supremacy between mages like her father, and demons like the man who is sent to protect her.

Xia is a demon who vehemently hates mages and witches, for they were the very people who enslaved him for torturous years, but he reluctantly finds himself vowing to protect the very daughter of the man who he has sworn to kill. He struggles with his desire for revenge, yet fears his desire for the woman who may be his one true mate. Both Alexandrine and Xia fight against forming any kind of relationship with each other, but are forced to trust one another with their lives and are unable to deny their combustible chemistry.

My Forbidden Desire is the second book in the series, and picks up where My Wicked Enemy left off. The reader is immediately immersed into the world that Carolyn Jewel has created. Her characters engage in dialogue that is sarcastic, sassy, and spunky verbal sparring. I loved this aspect of the book. And while this is a paranormal romance, the world building does not overtake, or bog down the core of this story, which a romance.

I enjoyed My Forbidden Desire, but wish I would have read My Wicked Enemy prior to reading it. Unfortunately I was not aware that the books build upon each other, and I think understanding the relationships, tensions between characters, and references to past events in My Wicked Enemy would have shed light on parts of My Forbidden Desire that otherwise were somewhat ambiguous and a little bit confusing. So if you want to read My Forbidden Desire, definitely read My Wicked Enemy first.

My only criticism of this book was the under explored relationship between Alexandrine and her brother Harsh. Harsh was presumed dead, and has been mysteriously absent from her life for over ten years. He returned to protect her from her father and the effects of the talisman, and despite his disappearance it is obvious that they love one another. At the beginning of the book Alexandrine resents and questions his interference in her life, yet no explanation is given as to his absence, or was there any resolution given to Alexandrine’s feelings of abandonment and confusion. While these loose strings bothered me a little it did not affect my overall impression of the book, it just would have made it that much better. My Forbidden Desire definitely tempted me to read more by Carolyn Jewel.

Everything Deeper

Friday, June 26

Ok, so maybe I'm just a tad bit obsessed with this book, but hey what can I say...I loooved it. I will promise not to have one more post about this book this month, even though there's only 4 more days left in June :)

Did you watch the book trailer, how about read the Tuesday's teaser, or the review? Not tired of it yet, and want more (like me)? Megan Hart recently blogged about trivia pertaining to Deeper, and thought I would share it with you. Here's what she had to say:

  • "Deeper was originally called Second Verse. I really liked that title. Deeper is good, too."

  • "Deeper takes place at Bethany Beach, DE, where I vacation every summer. I had my first “real” kiss at Bethany Beach. It was a long time ago. I believe our teeth clashed. His name was really just two initials. I wish I could remember his last name."

  • "Nick Hamilton is described as looking like Robert Downey Jr. in Less Than Zero. I’m not sure I’ve ever described a character using such specifics before. And it’s strange, I don’t “see” Nick as RDJ. Yet that’s how Bess saw him, so that’s what she thought."

  • "Between writing the book and its publication, the town of Bethany Beach underwent a pretty major transformation of its beach. I tried to make sure the final edits mentioned it, but…thus are the perils of writing about real places!"

  • "I think the cover art for DEEPER is probably my favorite of all my covers. It’s mesmerizing, actually. The colors. It’s beautiful. I know it’s sorta d-baggy to say so about something of my own, but hey, I didn’t MAKE the cover."
And if that is not enough for you, Megan Hart usually creates iTunes playlists that she listened to while writing her books. I personally love these, you can listen to her Deeper iMix on her blog.

Deeper by Megan Hart
Erotic Romance

ISBN: 9780373605323

Get the book:

From the Publisher:

Some lovers never leave you...

Twenty years ago she had her whole life spread out before her like a mesmerizing map. She was Bess Walsh, a fresh-scrubbed, middle-class student ready to conquer the design world. And she was taken. Absolutely and completely.

But not by Andy, her well-groomed, intellectual boyfriend who hinted more than once about a ring. No. During that hot summer as a waitress and living on the beach, she met Nick, a dark haired, local bad boy. He was, to put it mildly, not someone she could take home to Daddy.

Instead, Nick became her dirty little secret; a fervent sexual accomplice who knew how to ignite an all-consuming obsession she had no idea she carried deep within her.

Bess had always wondered what happened to Nick after that summer, after their promise to meet again. And now, back at the beach house and taking a break from responsibility, from marriage, from life, she discovers his heartbreaking fate--and why he never came back for her. Suddenly Nick's name is on her lips...his hands on her thighs...dark hair and eyes called back from the swirling gray of purgatory's depths.

Dead, alive, or something in-between, they can't stop their hunger.

She wouldn't dare.

Read an excerpt

"She didn't tell Nick she loved him. She didn't know how. Three simple words that in the past had so easily fallen from her mouth, like marbles spilled from a jar, didn't seem adequate to describe the width and depth and breadth of her emotions when she was with him. Or without him" p. 295

Review:

Deeper is a beautiful, haunting, and heart wrenching love story about lost love and second chances. Megan Hart's lyrical storytelling weaves Bess and Nick's story through glimpses of their brief, yet tumultuous summer affair that would have life long consequences and their second chance at love twenty years later.

For me Deeper is in the same tradition as great love stories such as Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, where no obstacle can hinder their love, imperfect as it may be. This story has stayed with me since I finished reading it, and is not easily forgotten. It is everything that I have come to expect from a Megan Hart novel. If you have read at least one of her books I think you know what I am talking about, and if you have not then you are missing out on one of today’s greatest romance writers. Though her romances do not generally have the “traditional” type of “happily ever after” her love stories (so much more than a romance) offer the hope of love; her endings are authentic and true to her characters.

I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK, and can’t even begin to express my feelings for it. Even though I shed tears of grief for the life Bess and Nick could have shared, it had the perfect ending. Their depth of love was shown in every written word, from Bess’s willingness to sacrifice everything for her love for Nick, to Nick’s final gesture of undying love, and finally to the glimmer of hope for Bess and Eddie. Deeper couldn’t be anything other than what it is… a great love story.

ps. for those of you who read Broken, Joe and Sadie make a very brief appearance and reveal their HEA :)

"He drank from her furiously. Pain vibrated through his flesh. Not the discomfort of a wound or an injury, but the raw, searing pain that came from exposing a desire that had long been denied. At that moment he needed Laura Vasquez just like he needed to breathe."

From the publisher:

This time, he’ll never let her go…

Chicago Special Agent Shane Dominic was in love with Laura Vasquez until the day she left him and married another man. Thirteen years may have passed, but Laura’s never disappeared from his fantasies, or destroyed his desire to learn the truth about why she left him. When her husband, the criminal mastermind behind an international ring of thieves, is murdered, Shane knows this is his one last, desperate chance to learn Laura’s secrets. And he’s not above using their scorching hot passion for one another and a little domination to do it.

One look at Shane, and Laura’s own memories come back to haunt her. Her feelings run deep, but she’d never divulge her secrets—a desperate vow that’s compromised when Shane stuns her by taking her as his captive to a secluded cabin. Here, she will finally belong to him, be subjected to his every torturously erotic whim, and be forced to trust him with a shocking truth she’s hidden for so long—one that will expose them to a danger closing in on the both of them.

"She didn't tell Nick she loved him. She didn't know how. Three simple words that in the past had so easily fallen from her mouth, like marbles spilled from a jar, didn't seem adequate to describe the width and depth and breadth of her emotions when she was with him. Or without him." p. 295 Deeper by Megan Hart

Review:

Cry for Passion is a love story about Jack’s ambition, Rose’s sorrow, and both their feelings of guilt and grief in finding love again. It has been several days since I finished reading this book, and it took me that long to decide what to write in the review. I have great admiration for Robin Schone’s writing, and many of her books have made their way to my permanent keeper shelf, but her newest series The Men and Women’s Club of which Cry for Passion is the third installment has not captured my interest as her previous endeavors.

I didn’t know what it was that I have not liked as much… the writing is masterful, the characters are well developed, a tight and interesting plot with no loose ends, but I finally came to the conclusion that it was the style of her writing in these books and the conversational dialogue between characters that was different, and as a result was what I was not really liking. Ms. Schone dedicates this book to “justice and those who pursue it…”, and after I realized it was the style of writing, and applied this dedication to her work, as well as all that was occurring during the Victorian period, things fell into place and I was more accepting of how she choose to write their stories.

Jack and Rose first met during a trial where he is the lawyer and she is being questioned on the witness stand. This beginning greatly influenced the style in which their story is told because much of their conversations (outside of the courtroom) have the feeling of interrogating each other and read much like a court transcript would. As their relationship progresses their dialogue slowly changes from lawyerly questioning to conversations between friends and lovers, but still remains sorrowful and reflective.

Rose’s life is one of heart wrenching betrayal by all whom should protect her…father, brother husband, and ultimately the political justice system. The suffragette movement is at the heart of her story, as well as her right as a human, not a possession, to belong to the Men and Woman’s Club, her rights to love and passion, and her rights over her own body and the choice not to have children. Rose’s story seems more of a cry of sorrow than passion, as evidenced by this quote from the book:

“Happiness should not be painful…” p. 285 Cry for Passion

All of the Men and Women’s Club are written in much of the same style, and I believe that it was a deliberate choice on Ms. Schone’s part to write the books in this manner to reflect the character’s struggles for the choices that they make, their independence against the rigid strictures of the Victorian period, and the sweeping changes as a result of the suffragette movement. At the end, I liked the story much more than I did at the beginning, and my only criticism would be the style of writing and the interrogatory dialogue. If you have not read Robin Schone before, I highly recommend The Lover, Gabriel's Woman, The Lady's Tutor, or my personal favorite, her novella in the anthology Captivated: A Lady's Pleasure. These are all on my keeper shelf, whereas Men and Women’s Club series is more of an acquired taste.

Titles in the series:

  1. Scandalous Lovers
  2. Private Places

Ratings:

Romance: 1.0
Passion: 2.75
Kleenex: 2.0
Overall: 3.0
