Guest Author & Giveaway: Donna Grant featuring Dangerous Highlander

Monday, January 4

***This giveaway has ended.  Thanks for joining in the fun!***

Today I have the first of many "Temptations" for you this week...Donna Grant's sexy highlander in Dangerous Highlander.  Donna's hero, Lucan experiences some serious temptation of his own with his heroine give in to just a little temptation and read on to find out why this is definitely going to be a sexy new year :)

Welcome to Seductive Musings Donna! I am so glad to have you as my guest today. For you, what makes a romance novel a great love story, and who are some of your favorite authors to read? Who's your new favorite find?

Thanks for having me!  Well, what makes a romance novel a great love story is a hero and heroine that grab me instantly, a story with depth and emotion that pulls at my heart and stays with me long after I finish the book.

I have lots of favorite authors, but to name a few: Lara Adrian, Shana Abe, Lisa Kleypas, Lisa Renee Jones, Christina Dodd, Larissa Ione, Stephanie Tyler, Lorraine Heath, and JR Ward.  I’ll stop there before the list gets too long :)

Hmm...a new favorite find? Jennifer Haymore.  LOVE her books!

Jennifer Haymore is one of my favorite new finds from last year too.  Can you tell us a little bit about the books in your Dark Sword series and give us some insight into each of the three heroic, yet tragically imprisoned MacLeod brothers?

The series is about men with primeval gods locked inside them by Druids.  These gods passed down through generations from the time when the Romans invaded Britain.  These “gods” helped the Celts defeat Rome once and for all, but the cost to the men was too much.  However, the Druids weren’t able to pull the gods out of the men.  Instead, they bound the gods so the gods could not use their powers through the men.

It begins with the MacLeods because their clan was named in an ancient scroll found by an evil Druid intent on ruling the world.  She releases the gods inside them intent on having them serve her.  But the MacLeods serve no one, especially not evil.

Magic, Druids, and the Celts seem to play a large part in most of your writing.  How do they inspire you, especially in your sensual and historical fantasy Dark Sword series?

I’ve had this question asked a lot lately.  I’m not sure.  I love anything Scottish and Celitc, and I love Britain.  That land has so much history, so much legend and lore that you can practically feel the magic in the land.  As a writer, my mind just spirals out of control with the possibilities.

I use Druids because there is so much conflicting history on them that I’m able to use them how I want/need to in my books, and if I’m using Druids, they go hand and hand with magic :)

I, for one am glad that your Muse has inspired the Dark Sword series.  Tell us about your hero in Dangerous Highlander, Lucan MacLeod. What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine Cara, fall in love with him despite his dangerous nature? And can you tell us a little bit about their story in Dangerous Highlander?

Ah, Lucan.  He was such a pleasure to write.  I loved watching his and Cara’s story unfold.

Lucan is a man who will do anything for his family.  He’ll stop at nothing to keep them safe and to keep them together.  It’s his love for his family, his need to do the right thing no matter how hard it is, and his fight to remember the man he was before he was turned immortal that makes him such a great hero in my eyes.  He’s suffered tremendously, but he puts it all aside to care for his brothers, then Cara.  Because they need him.

But God help anyone who threatens his family or his woman.  You don’t know wraith until you experience Lucan MacLeod on a rampage.

Lucan sounds like my kind of hero! I could definitely fall for that, especially if it included the cover goodness :) What's your favorite scene or moment from Dangerous Highlander, and why? Can you describe it for us without giving too much away?

Hmm…my favorite scene…  I think it would have to be the scene where Cara runs away thinking to save Lucan and his brothers from certain death.  However, Lucan isn’t about to let Cara go that easily.  He finds her in the forest where their desire finally comes to a boiling point :)

That sounds like an intensely sexy & spine crease worthy know one that automatically falls open to your favorite moments in a book.  What are some of your upcoming releases, or new projects you are working on?

I’m happy to say I’ll be working on the Dark Sword series for awhile :)  I was contracted for three more books, so I’m deep in the DS world.

The next release will be Fallon’s book, FORBIDDEN HIGHLANDER, out May 25, 2010.

Then Quinn’s book, WICKED HIGHLANDER, in November 2010.

The next three books haven’t been titled, but I do know they’ll be releasing every 6 months.

OMG!  Do you have time for anything else but writing?  Seriously…readers like myself bow down and give thanks for not having to wait too long in between books in a series.  If you could ask readers a question, what would it be?

What keeps you coming back to buy an author time and again?

Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

Lol.  Ok, let’s see…The moon will shine to your destiny

Now, here's a look at Dangerous Highlander and a special bonus excerpt just for Musings readers....enjoy!

He is magnificently strong — and dangerously seductive. One of the fiercest of his clan, Lucan MacLeod is a legend among warriors, inspiring fear in man and woman alike. For three hundred years, he has locked himself away from the world, hiding the vengeful god imprisoned in his soul. But then, a young lass caught in a raging storm awakens his deepest impulses…and darkest desires.

Cara doesn’t believe the rumors about MacLeod castle—until the majestic Highland warrior appears like a fiery vision in the storm, pulling her into his powerful arms, and into his world of magic and Druids. An epic war between good and evil is brewing. And Lucan must battle his all-consuming attraction for Cara—or surrender to the flames of a reckless, impossible love that threatens to destroy them both…

First off. I love your fortune cookie fortune. But then again I'm a moon person. :-)

What keeps me coming back to buy an author over and over again?

Well they have to capture me. I have to want to be the heroine, or steal the Hero, or just want them to be real so I can meet them.
If that doesn't work, because there are some characters that I would never want to be, steal, or know. I have to be so intrigued by the story that I have to know what happens next. Put simply, I have to be captured.

Contest entries:

Hi Donna,
Congrats on the new release. I keep buying an books by an author whose style of writing I enjoy. The stories themselves have to hold my attention and make me wish the author would write faster.

What keeps me coming back for more? I have to be in love with the hero and can’t wait to find out what is going to happen next….be it a story about his next adventure or that of his family that I’ve come to care for.

A good example of a continuing series is Outlander (I’m in love with Jamie and will be till the day I die) and although this series has spanned over 15 years (and I wasn’t thrilled with the latest book), I know I’ll keep coming back for more.

There are other books where the main character is (more or less only in the 1st book) such as Lora Leigh’s Breed Series…but again the attraction to the entire breed (alpha type) males keeps me coming back for more.

I’ve named two different series that “I” like, but that is because I prefer an alpha male hero that is confident in all ways but needs the love of a good woman to make him whole…But there are loads of women that prefer a less aggressive hero (beta type) or a dysfunctional hero that needs a woman to heal him…..and in my opinion, that is where the difference exists in what women prefer/buy to read.

hi donna! thanks for the excerpts! please count me in for the giveaway. i'm an old follower.

hmm... i like authors who can write a good story that captures my attention: great writing, a likeable, independent for her time & sympathetic heroine that i'll care about, a hero that i'd want for my own, and a good plot (i know many plot devices in books have been done before but if an author can make it their own--those are the best).

Just popping in to say hi and I hope you are having a great new year so far!

Tamsyn January 4, 2010 at 7:52 AM

Great excerpts! Love them and the hot cover. Always like a man in a kilt! :o)

I keep coming back for authors who can deliver a story with an alpha hero and kick-ass heroine. But the story must be good with a HEA. I never buy books without a HEA.

Hi, Ladies! Happy New Year! The two things which keep me in thrall with an author are character developement and attention to story line detail. Keeps me coming back for more, more, more : )

I would like to enter to win. :)

To answer Donna's question: I think there is a combination of skill both in writing and in imagination that goes into the making of a successful author. I don't like stories that are cookie-cutter and predictable.

I follow this blog on my google reader. :)

What keeps me coming back to buy an author over and over again?
Usually I read series so if I like the first book I buy the next one to know what happens next with the characters or read the story of another set of characters.

Hi, Donna :)

What keeps me coming back to my favorite authors is the way they write a story... if it grabs me and has me eagerly turning the pages, distracting me from all else... oh, and they will definitely be an author I go back to if they get me to sigh, hehe

Just dropping in to spread the love. No need to enter me, I have Mutual Desire and I just loved it!!

I enjoyed the excerpt and bonus excerpt to Dangerous Highlander.

What keeps be coming back to an author? I think Dorothy gave some pretty good reasons which I agree. More importantly, and Donna does this so well is the dialogue. She writes true to form for the period. This makes the story so much more believable for me as a reader.

In answer to Donna's question. The reason I keep buying from the same author is one of two reasons. First, if it's a series I get invested in the characters and want to see what happens to them. Secondly, because I like the voice of the author. The ideas and the types of things they write about.

Sue A. January 4, 2010 at 11:25 PM

What keeps me coming back is that I've made an emotional connection with the author through her writing and characterization. If an author can pull my heart strings, I'll keep seeking her books.

Hi Donna!
congrats on the release! your book sounds very interesting and I love the cover *sigh*

What keeps you coming back to buy an author time and again?
I have to feel the characters - be in their situation and share their emotions. That's the reason I'm coming back ;)

wish you all the best!

I know I'll sound like a broken record, but I'll come back time & again to an author who delivers honest, likeable and intelligent characters, but add to that list: great chemistry between the h/h, intense heroes, a fast-paced storyline that doesn't overshadow the romance and (I've got to admit it because it really should be at the top of my list) smoking hot sex scenes. ;)
