Guest Author & Giveaway: Christina Phillips featuring Forbidden

Thursday, September 30

***This giveaway has ended, but you should still read the post...it's worth your time:)  Thanks for joining the fun!***

It's funny how things happen sometimes, don't you think?  For instance, I very well could have missed my guest author's book if it hadn't been for the Fall giveaway that Berkley publishers sponsored at Dear Author a few weeks ago.  There were two or three books that I would have loved to win (didn't win any by the way), but the one book that I saw that captured my interest the most, in part because I knew little about it and mostly because it was set in Roman Britain, was Forbidden by Christina Phillips.  I read the blurb, went to the author's website, then read the excerpt and couldn't wait to read the whole thing.  Who could blame me when the hero is a Roman centurion (think James Purefoy in Rome, Andy Whitfield in Spartacus...I could go on but for your sakes I won't).

I'm completely fascinated by periods in time when lands were invaded by conquerors, how old traditions are assimilated into new ones to try and blend the two cultures that makes change more acceptable, and how two people can find love amidst all of this despite their vast differences. Author Christina Phillips is my guest today to share her book Forbidden, in which her hero and heroine overcome their differences for love.  Read and enjoy!

Welcome to Seductive Musings Christina! I have to admit that I have had a love for early Roman heroes for quite some time, especially after having seen Russell Crowe in Gladiator, the Showtime series Rome, and the more recent Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand.  There’s a whole lotta yum right there.  For you, what makes a romance novel a great love story and what makes writing ancient historical romances set in this oftentimes brutal and transitional time period so compellingly seductive to your muse?

Thank you for having me at Seductive Musings today! I so agree, what’s not to love about hot warriors in skirts :)

I love strong conflict in my romances, tough, honorable heroes and courageous heroines. I was writing for ten years before I sold FORBIDDEN, and during that time had written both contempoary and paranormal romance. But it was only when I decided to write an ancient historical romance that everything came together. I had an Alpha warrior hero and an educated, independent heroine who came from opposing worlds and cultures. Suddenly I had an impossible love, a seemingly insurmountable conflict dividing hero and heroine in a life-and-death dilemma, set in an era of immense change and upheaval. There was so much to explore and discover, my muse was in raptures!

Your newest novel, FORBIDDEN is the first book in your new Forbidden series. Can you tell us a little bit about the books in this series, how many there might be, and how they will be connected?

The first book, FORBIDDEN starts several months after the Romans first invaded my heroine’s beloved homeland. Carys, a Druid princess and acolyte of the Goddess of Wisdom, Cerridwen, is immediately captivated by the tough Roman warrior who displays unexpected honor after he catches her spying on him  :) Despite knowing she should keep well away from him, their destinies are on a collision course and it isn’t long before they become lovers. But as their ingrained prejudices and misconceptions about each other’s cultures begin to crumble, the ancient gods demand retribution.

CAPTIVE starts six months after FORBIDDEN ends, and follows the story of Carys’s best friend, Morwyn. Morwyn is an acoloyte of the Great Goddess, the Morrigan, and as CAPTIVE begins she is suffering a crisis of faith. She decides to join up with the rebels fighting the Roman invaders but is captured by a Gaul mercenary. Bren, undercover in the Legion for his Briton king, can’t confide in this woman who shows no fear of him, as he knows by so doing he risks more than both their lives. As the Legions prepare to wipe out the rebels Morwyn can no longer deny the wrath of her goddess, the mantle of her Druidry or the depth of her love for a man she has vowed to kill.

I would love to write more books in this series, and have a couple outlined that involve a warrior from FORBIDDEN, and a Druid heroine who made a brief appearance at the end of CAPTIVE.

If you had an opportunity to provide only a two or three sentence "teaser" quote from FORBIDDEN, to grab the attention of potential readers and give them a glimpse and feeling of what the story is about what would it be?

She slid her arms around his body. Granite strength and primal power radiated from every pore, thrilling her feminine senses, making her feel safe. Protected.

And yet she was the one who protected them both from untoward attack, here inside her own sacred circle.

Her Roman could never discover such magic.

The hero in FORBIDDEN is Roman centurion Tiberius Valerius Maximus, known simply as Maximus.  What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine Carys, fall in love with him despite his mission to eliminate her Druid clan? And can you tell us a little bit about their story in FORBIDDEN?

Maximus is a patrician, loyal to his Emperor and Rome, but when he meets Carys and begins to get to know her he starts to question certain aspects of his culture. It’s this aspect of his personality, the way he’s prepared to see things from Carys’s point of view, how he respects her independence even when it drives him mad, that causes her to lose her heart and realise that not all Romans are savage barbarians.

The story is set in AD 50 Britannia. As the Roman Legions sweep through Cymru, Carys and the rest of her clan escape into a magical enclave, and are waiting for a sign from their gods before they attack their enemy. They were only supposed to remain there for a short time to rebuild their defenses, but their High Druid has other plans.

Carys is a Druid princess, yet finds herself drawn to her captor, Maximus, even though she knows the danger he brings to her world and way of life.  Tell us more about your heroine, Carys, and what are some of the qualities that attracts him to her and makes her undeniably tempting?

Like Maximus, Carys has had a privledged upbringing in her world, until the Romans invaded. She is devoted to her goddess, Cerridwen, and will do anything for her – although she’s not above interpreting Signs to her own best advantage :)  Initially attracted to her on a purely sexual level, it’s not long before Maximus is intrigued by her independent nature and her refusal to acknowledge Rome as her conqueror. The more time he spends with her the more he realizes the Celts are not the barbarous heathens he’s always believed.

What's your favorite scene or moment from FORBIDDEN, and why? Can you describe it for us without giving too much away?

One of my favorite scenes is when Maximus takes Carys to the Roman baths. Until then, neither had been prepared to face how they really felt about the other but during the mutual seduction both come to realize they feel a lot more than mere lust. And, in Carys’s case, she has to face what the consequences of that love might be.

What are five fun facts about you or this book, that readers would love to know?
  1. It had never occurred to me to write an ancient historical romance until one night Maximus literally invaded my head and refused to leave until I told his story.  Since I was completely intrigued as to why this Roman warrior was searching for his Druid princess, I dropped everything and obeyed his command :)
  2. When I first started writing FORBIDDEN, all I knew was the Romans were hunting for the elusive clan of Druids who had escaped the initial invasion. When I started my research I was stoked to discover that, in fact, the Roman Emperor of the time, Claudius, had issued orders for all Druids to be eliminated across his Empire. This was very handy for my plot!
  3. I had no idea how the book was going to end when I started it but, more worrying, I still had no idea how things were going to work out at the two-third point, either. Thankfully, my muse knows a lot more about these things than I do!!
  4. I wrote this book as a standalone, with no idea there could be any other books set in this world. Luckily, my awesome agent saw the potential and suggested I should write Morwyn’s story.
  5. I’m addicted to coffee, chocolate and my Chap Stick (and possibly the letter C!!)
Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

Book two in the Forbidden series, CAPTIVE, is due for release on 1st February 2011. I’m currently revising a book set in a different century (although still an ancient historical) that will hopefully be the first in a new series.

If you could ask readers to finish a sentence what would it be?

The best thing about tough Alpha warriors in a skirt is...

Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

Ancient historical romances are ... hot!

First in a new erotic historical series of magical heroines and sexy warriors.

He was a master of seduction - but no match for the magical allure of the woman he wanted most...

Carys knew from the moment she first spied on Maximus in his naked barbarian glory that he was a dangerous Roman centurion - his taut, battle-scarred flesh marking him as a fearless warrior. But her desire for him was as undeniable as it was illicit.

Charged by his emperor to eliminate a clan of powerful Druids in Britain, Maximus never expects his mission to be thwarted by the clan's ethereal princess, Carys, his daring voyeur. Falling under her spell, he doesn't realize her true heritage - until he captures her heart as well as her body.

As Carys's loyalties are twisted, and freedom is no longer her single-minded obsession, an avenging former lover threatens to crush Maximus's people into oblivion. Now Carys and Maximus must overcome the devastation of war and face the ultimate sacrifice if their forbidden love is to survive.

Guest Author & Giveaway: Courtney Milan featuring Trial by Desire

Wednesday, September 29

***This giveaway has ended, but you should still read the post...it's worth your time:)  Thanks for joining the fun!***

Have you every purchased an anthology for one author, and figured since you bought it you might as well read the other stories too?  That was how I happened upon my guest today.  I picked up the anthology The Heart of Christmas, first because it was a holiday anthology (and I love those), and second because it had a novella by Mary Balogh.  Only to realize that Ms. Balogh's story was a reprint (several times over) that I had already read it a loong time ago but forgotten about.  To say I was disappointed is an understatement, but then for some unknown reason, call it divine intervention if you will, I decided to read "This Wicked Gift" by Courtney Milan before tossing the book into the Goodwill box.  To say I was blown away by her story in that anthology is a vast understatement of epic proportions.

I loved that the hero and heroine were working class, and that the plight of a young woman struggling to provide for her family, with little hope of getting married because they have no money, finds love with a hero with a heart of gold. Their happy ending doesn't come without sacrifice.  It wasn't easy, or charmed, but it was beautiful.  I loved, loved, loved it!  So after falling in love with her story, I immediately looked her up on the net to find out what other gems of her's I had been missing out on, only to find out that her debut novel, Proof of Seduction, had yet to be released and I only had to wait a few short months to get my bookover hands on it.  Long story short, I read it and loved it.  In fact she blew me away with her storytelling yet again.

That was almost ten months ago, and I have been patiently waiting for her newest book ever since.  They say good things come to those who wait....which is why I have very high hopes for Ms. Milan's new historical romance Trial by Desire.  To my great delight Courtney Milan is my guest today to talk about her unlikely hero in Trial by Desire.  I hope you read and enjoy it as much as I did :)

The hero least likely to...

One of the strange things about motivation is that the same circumstance can make a person do completely opposite things. Think about it: the following two sentences both make perfect sense, even though they are exactly the opposite.

His father was an alcoholic, and so he is an alcoholic.
His father was an alcoholic, and so he will not touch a drop.

(I actually read this example somewhere else, but I can't find the source--so apologies! If anyone knows where it's from, please let me know.)

And so let's talk about circumstances. I'm sure you all know That Guy. You know, the guy from high school. The one who floated through all his classes, barely passing. He graduated by the skin of his teeth. His teachers heaved a sigh of relief when he scraped up the necessary points to get through their classes. He was never a bad kid--but he was the a class clown. Everyone liked him. In his senior year, he was voted "least likely to hold down a full time job" by the class, because nobody expected him to do anything worthwhile.

Have any of you met That Guy at your high school reunion? Sometimes, he's not there because he's in jail. Sometimes, he shows up, proud because he's managed to keep his latest entry-level job for a few years. Sometimes he's faintly average--working a desk job for the last five years, married, with 2.2 kids.

But on rare occasions, he's the one who walks into the room and nobody recognizes him. He cut his hair. He's wearing a suit. He owns his own business--no, make that three businesses--and he just sold one of them to Google for $29.6 million dollars. And when someone asks him what happened, how he turned his life around, he just smiles and says, "I didn't want to be That Guy."

His expression is hidden behind his $500 sunglasses, and so you can't see the sleepless nights over the last decade. You don't feel all those evenings of aching self-doubt, where he wondered why he should even bother. You don't know how many times he nearly gave up, but kept going. You don't know how many times that class vote--"Least Likely to Hold Down a Full-time Job"--made him grit his teeth and keep going.

All you know is that he's somehow become a total success--and he still makes you laugh.

In Proof by Seduction, my debut novel, Ned was a secondary character...and, let's face it. He was That Guy. The one who made people laugh. A really, really nice guy--but, you know. Everyone got together, and they voted him least likely to hold down a full time job. Under that kind of pressure, a lot of people crack. But Ned--Ned is that one-in-a-hundred kind of person, the one who thinks, "I'm not going to be That Guy."

And he turns his life around. When Trial by Desire starts, he knows he has to prove himself.

It's up to you to decide whether he does. But if you're wondering... here's a little taste:
Ned knew what it was like to feel powerless, at the mercy of others. And he didn’t like seeing it in anyone else.

It was a sentiment as idiotic as kicking her door down would have been. After all that, he still saw himself as some sort of a hero—a strange and useless one, no doubt. He was no Bow Street Runner, no knight in shining armor. If he’d had chain-mail, it would all have rusted at sea. But Ned wasn’t the sort of knight who perished in glorious battle for the sake of a poetic ending.

He had prevailed. He’d beaten back those doubts. He’d found his place and he’d learned to stand on his own two feet, free from that cloying hint of bitter dependence.

It looked like Lady Harcroft—and by extension, Ned’s own wife—needed a hero. If he could bring Lady Harcroft the kind of peace he’d found, it would prove once and for all that his victory had not been temporary. It would be proof that he’d truly won, that he’d tamed his own response. It would be like a medieval tourney, his very own trial.

Is there anything in your past that you hope everyone forgets? I'll post my own big secret in the comments--and one lucky commenter will win a copy of TRIAL BY DESIRE, so she can see how Ned manages it for herself.

She cannot forget the fire he ignited…

In the three years since her husband left her, Lady Kathleen Carhart has managed to forge a fulfilling life for herself. But when Ned Carhart unexpectedly returns, she finds her tranquility uprooted—and her deepest secrets threatened. Though she has no intention of falling for Ned’s charms, Kate can no longer deny the desire that still burns in her heart.

Or the promise of his love…

Ned is determined to regain his wife’s trust by using unbridled seduction. But just as Kate surrenders to Ned’s passion, her carefully guarded past threatens to destroy her. Now Kate must place her faith in the only man she’s ever loved, and the only one who has ever betrayed her…

Congratulations Courtney!  Trial by Desire officially released yesterday on September 28th.  I'm really looking forward to reading it because I loved Proof by Seduction and thought that her novella in The Heart of Christmas was the best!  I know I already said all of that, but it's worth repeating :)

Yesterday I told you how much I loved to read Jill Shalvis's blog because of her daily dose of humor.  Courtney Milan's website is also one of my favorite haunts for the same reason.  She doesn't blog as regularly as Jill does, but when she does I can't click over to her site fast enough to read what she has written.  Her post titled "Chased by Cows" had my eyes watering I laughed so hard.  I liked it so much that I went back and reread it again yesterday :)  Then add the book reviews by her husband...and what can I say it's a favorite for many reasons.  You too can enjoy Courtney Milan at her website www.courtneymilan.com, her blog, MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook.  While there you should definitely check out  her Extras page because there are several free reads, and you can also find the FAQ's, and other interesting tidbits for Trial by Desire (like why her books have "code names").

To celebrate the release of  her new book, author Courtney Milan has offered to giveaway one copy of Trial by Desire to one lucky commenter.  Here's how you can enter to win...

Guest Author & Giveaway: Jill Shalvis featuring Simply Irresistible

Tuesday, September 28

***This giveaway has ended, but you should still read the post...it's worth your time:)  Thanks for joining the fun!***

My guest author today is one of my favorite contemporary romance authors.  Time and again Jill Shalvis writes humorous, sexy, and emotionally compelling characters that keeps me coming back for more.  In fact Slow Heat, the second book in her Pacific Heat series, is one of my favorite reads this year.  Needless to say when I found out she was writing a new series surrounding three sisters I knew I wanted needed had to read them.  I'm so happy because my wait is finally over because the first book in the Lucky Harbor series, Simply Irresistible releases this week, and Jill is here today to share the book with us.  Read and enjoy!

Heya Jill, welcome back to Seductive Musings! I love contemporary romances and your latest in the Pacific Heat series, Slow Heat, is one of my favorites this year. I love the blend of humor, emotion, and sensuality in your stories. What makes writing contemporary romances so compellingly seductive to your muse?

I'm so glad you liked the Pacific Heat books, Double Play and Slow Heat! As for what makes writing contemporary romances so compelling, the truth is I really just like making up stories about every day people. No special powers, no big hero complex, no woo-woo elements. Just real people, managing to find love in a sometimes crazy world.

Your newest novel, SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE is the first book in your new Lucky Harbor series. Can you tell us a little bit about the books in this series, how many there might be, and how they are all connected?

The Lucky Harbor series is about three estranged sisters stuck together running a falling down on its axis beach inn. We've got The Mouse, the Steel Magnolia and the Wild Child, and each sister will get their own story. Up first is Simply Irresistible (out 9/29/10) and then The Sweetest Thing (4/11) and Head Over Heels (11/11).

If you had an opportunity to provide only a two or three sentence "teaser" quote from SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, to grab the attention of potential readers and give them a glimpse and feeling of what the story is about what would it be?

How about this, the thoughts of the heroine getting her first up close look into the hero's eyes:

When she opened her eyes again, he was even closer, and his eyes weren’t the solid warm caramel she’d thought but had flecks of gold dancing in them as well. She could have happily, willingly, drowned in all that deliciousness. Death by deliciousness. Not a bad way to go.

Maddie Moore, your heroine, seems like a girl that is sadly down on her luck in Lucky Harbor. Can you tell us a little bit about her story in SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE?

Maddie's lost her job (fired), her boyfriend (dumped) and her mother (passed away) all in the span of a few weeks and she's at the bottom of the barrel, her only solace being potato chips and the hope that things can't get worse. In Simply Irresistible we get to watch her turn her life around and go after what she wants. Granted, she has no idea that what she wants is love, and it does blindside her when it shows up in the form of one sexy-as-hell carpenter Jax Cullen, but it's fun to watch.

Please tell us more about her yummy hero, Jax Cullen. What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine Maddie, fall in love with him despite her having sworn off men? What makes him irresistibly tempting?

Jax is an ex-big city attorney turned small town master carpenter by choice. In general, his laid-back, easy-going personality matches the ways of Mystic Rock, which is hugely appealing to a woman like Maddie. But Jax does have his secrets. I like to think of him as a sexy sheep in wolf’s clothing.

What's your favorite scene or moment from SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, and why? Can you describe it, or provide a short excerpt, for us without giving too much away?

Here's Maddie trying to explain to Jax that she can't go out with him because she's given up men and all that goes with that:

She closed her eyes. “Okay, here’s the thing. We have some chemistry,” she allowed. “But I really did give up men.”
“Forever?”
“My gut says yes, but that might be PMS talking. Let’s just say I’m giving up men for a very long time.”
He merely arched a brow. “Aren’t you going to miss sex?”
“No.”
“Not at all?”
“Not even a little.”
He shot her a look of blatant disbelief. “How is that even possible? That’s like saying you wouldn’t miss having a cold beer on a hot summer night or the sound of the ocean pounding the surf while you run, or . . . air in your lungs.”
She had to laugh at his adamancy. “Maybe sex isn’t all that important to me.”
“Then you’ve been doing it wrong.”

What are five fun facts about you or this book, that readers would love to know?

  1. I wrote most of this book while sitting in doctor's waiting rooms during a health crisis for my middle daughter. It was an escape, a lovely fun warm escape. I hope the readers find that reading it gives them the same wonderful feeling.
  2. I used the rough drafts of this book -- and there were many -- as fire starters all last winter.
  3. Maddie loves salt and vinegar potato chips and so do I.
  4. I'm writing the third sister, Chloe, right this very minute.
  5. I modeled the three sisters after my own three daughters.

Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

Upcoming releases ... look for The Sweetest Thing in April 2011, and then Head Over Heels in November 2011.

If you could ask readers a question what would it be?

If you had to be the youngest, middle or oldest sister of three, which would you be and why?

Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

Read more romance novels by Jill Shalvis ... :)

Maddie Moore's whole life needs a makeover.

In one fell swoop, Maddie loses her boyfriend (her decision) and her job (so not her decision). But rather than drowning her sorrows in bags of potato chips, Maddie leaves L.A. to claim the inheritance left by her free-spirited mother-a ramshackle inn nestled in the little coastal town of Lucky Harbor, Washington.

Starting over won't be easy. Yet Maddie sees the potential for a new home and a new career-if only she can convince her two half-sisters to join her in the adventure. But convincing Tara and Chloe will be difficult because the inn needs a big makeover too.

The contractor Maddie hires is a tall, dark-haired hottie whose eyes-and mouth-are making it hard for her to remember that she's sworn off men. Even harder will be Maddie's struggles to overcome the past, though she's about to discover that there's no better place to call home than Lucky Harbor.

Congrats Jill! Jill lives in a small town in the Sierras also run by quirky characters. Any resemblance to the quirky characters in her books are, um, mostly coincidental. You can visit her at her website www.jillshalvis.com to learn more about all of her books, as well as her daily blog detailing her city-girl-living-in-the-mountain adventures.  Her blog is not to be missed and is a daily stop for me.  It's like my daily cuppa joe in the morning....I guess you could say it's my daily cuppa jill.  Her posts make me laugh which is a great way to start every day.

You all know how I love book extras and Jill has some goodies to go along with the release of Simply Irresistible.  If you like to knit you can make Maddie's Boyfriend Scarf that she makes in the book by downloading the pattern (you can read more about the funny reason why this is relevant to the book here), and you can read a special sneak peek teaser excerpt for the next book in the series, The Sweetest Thing, that won't be out until April 2011 (both of these links will open up a PDF file that you can save to your computer).

To celebrate the release of the first book in the Lucky Harbor series, Simply Irresistible, her publisher Forever romance is giving away five copies of this book.  Here's how you can enter to win...

Ways to earn entries:
  • Mandatory: Answer the question Jill asked readers in her her interview and leave a meaningful comment and/or ask her a question.  (good for 1 entry)

Monday's Muse

Monday, September 27

Sorry, but the image containing the Monday's Muse has been removed from this blog so as not to violate any copyright issues.  Thanks for your understanding!

On Sunday I decided to have a "Do Nothing" day and just indulge in doing only what I wanted to do.  And what I really wanted to do was sit down and read Four Play, the new anthology by Maya Banks and Shayla Black.  Both of these authors are must reads and are two of my favorite erotic romance authors ...but put them in one anthology together and it makes the cooler days of fall seem a lot hotter!  Both of their stories were definitely HOT!!  That's right I read the entire book in one day.  It was FOURTASTIC!  Fans of Maya, Shalya, and menage love stories will not be disappointed.  Hence today's Muse.  Picture three of them begging to fulfill your fantasies and you get Maya and Shayla's men in Four Play.  Yeah, it's exactly that hot!

On to other things....is anyone else as excited as I am that The Amazing Race started again last night?  It's only one of a handful of shows that I watch every season without fail.  I LOVE IT!  I love the different places that they get to go, the adventures that they get to have, and most of all getting to watch how the couples interact with each other and the other teams in stressful and extreme situations.  It truly is amazing! Love love love it!!!  Last night they were in Britain and visited Stonehenge which made me think a lot about Forbidden by Christina Phillip's novel that I finished reading last week.  I've always wanted to go there so I hope they visit more places in the UK and Ireland before moving on to other places in the world. It's my virtual vacation :)

Other exciting news for me is that I am getting my haircut on Wednesday.  It's been a loong time (at least for me) almost 7 months since I've gotten it cut and have decided that I want a new look.  I should be nervous, but I'm not.  I'm so ready for something different that I've given my new hairdresser carte blanche.  It's just hair right?  But seriously, she's been cutting my sister's hair and I love hers so I have no worries.   Then again I could be crying on Thursday when my hair is short and so different that I hardly recognize me :)  She offered to give me a Brazilian blowout when I first talked to her...and I have to admit the first thing I thought of was the Brazilian wax and got a little nervous.  Come to find out it's a new technique to straighten curly or wavy hair and it lasts for a couple of weeks.  Who knew?

This week I have really amazing authors as my guests.  Some old favorites and some new discoveries.  Here's the lineup:
  • Tuesday Jill Shalvis will be my guest to celebrate the first book in her new contemporary romance Lucky Harbor series, Simply Irresistible.  I love the humor in her books just as much as the steamy romance.  I've been looking forward  to this series.
  • Wednesday Courtney Milan will be my guest to celebrate her new historical romance Trial by Desire.  I loved her debut last year and have been anxiously awaiting this new one ever since finishing her first.
  • Thursday Christina Phillips will be my guest to celebrate her erotic historical romance Forbidden.  Celts, Druids and Roman conquerors, oh yeah!
  • Friday Olivia Cunning will be here to celebrate her debut contemporary erotic romance Backstage Pass with some hot as sin rockers from her new Sinners on Tour series.
  • I also have a new Tempting Trailer for Diana Gabaldon's The Exile:  An Outlander Graphic Novel.  I'm looking forward to reading it especially since her publisher thought a few of the images were "too graphic" shall we say.  Diana has one of the outtakes depicting Jamie and Claire's wedding night.  My local library has ordered a few copies and I already have it on reserve.  Can't wait to read the story from Jamie's perspective despite my disappointment in An Echo in the Bone earlier this year.
I think that's about it!  Super exciting!!  Have a great Monday!!! I know too many exclamation points, but somehow I can't seem to restrain myself :)

Sorry, but it's just me today...and a few Butlers in the Buff

Friday, September 24

I know you all were expecting author M.A. Ellis to be here today, and so was I, but unfortunately due to a scheduling snafu with her publicist we had to cancel. Hopefully I'll have a reschedule date for us soon.

So today what you get is me :)  It's been awhile I know.  I was going through my blog posts recently and realized that they have really only been comprised of Monday's Muses, guest authors, reviews and winners.  Not that there is anything wrong with that, but being a Friday and all I thought it should be just a relaxing day.

I spent quite a bit of my free time on Google reader yesterday trying to get my unread posts below the 1000+ mark.  Yes that's right it lost track after I had surpassed over 1000 unread posts.  It all started back in August with all of the guests I had...something had to give and that was one of them.  I'm happy to report that I am now at only 861 unread posts :)  Woo hoo!  That's almost cause for celebration.

As I was going through there were quite a few websites that I hadn't had recent updates for and found that the feed link was broken or some such...have you had this happen to you?  So I fixed those, and deleted some that I find all I do when I get behind is mark them as read...why keep them if I don't read them.  I really should have been doing other things but it was bothering me that I could be missing out on something really good by putting it off any longer.  I procrastinate that way.  It's a bad habit, one that I've tried to stop doing many many times in my life but in all honesty I think this is one thing that will probably never change.

Anyways....if you stuck with me through all of that you deserve a reward :)  I have something for you that made me laugh when I first saw it on another website (doing Muse research of course).  It was for a business called Butlers in the Buff.  Have you heard of it?  It's a company based in the UK that offers hunky men scantily dressed in aprons and bow ties to serve cocktails (no pun intended) and food at your next special event.  Don't believe me....

This picture was taken at a Hen's night party, which I gather is much like a bachelorette party here in the US.  And in case you didn't notice those aren't long aprons their wearing either...

All of these women seem to be enjoying themselves don't you think...and I think the one on the far right is getting quite an eyeful if the expression on her face is any indication :)  In fact it has become so popular in the UK that the company is offering global franchises.  Me,  I'm liking this idea A LOT!

I found this video that tells more about it, and thought it was fun for a Friday, you know just a good bit of fun to start the weekend out right...

( I thought the video was going to work but it's late and I'm tired so I left it in even though you have to view it on Youtube)

What about you?  Would you hire Butlers in the Buff?  Personally I think it's great! I think they would be a great addition to the next Romance Conference like RomCon or something don't you?  And for anyone outside of the US who has had the opportunity to experience Butlers in the Buff or know someone who has I'd love to hear your tales...spill the goods, we're all friends here at SM.

p.s. I just saw that the Butlers have landed!  They are in fact in the US in the Orlando area. If you live there I would love to know if you've seen/used them.  They look pretty delicious!  You can find more about them here, but I have to say that the UK site is more fun.

Guest Author & Giveaway: Sabrina Jeffries featuring A Hellion in Her Bed

Wednesday, September 22

***This giveaway has ended, but you should still read the post...it's worth your time:)  Thanks for joining the fun!***

A few of the terms in a historical romance title or series that will definitely make me sit up and take notice are "Rake", "Rogue", and "Hellion".  I think it's the thought of a historical hero, who is usually a titled Lord, that rebels against the stringent rules of society in his pursuit of his favorite pastimes.  Give me a whole family of Hellions to get to know and love and combine them with one of my favorite historical romance authors who I have been following for years, and I am in booklover bliss :)

My guest today is New York Times and USA today bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries!  She's here to share insight into her second book in her Hellions of Halstead Hall series, one that I can't wait to get my hands on, A HELLION IN HER BED.  See that title...it had me at Hellion :)  Read and enjoy!

Welcome to Seductive Musings Sabrina!  I’ve been a long time fan of your books ever since finding you with the Royal Brotherhood series, so I’m very excited to have you as my guest today.  For you, what makes a romance novel a great love story?

A number of things:  sizzling sexual tension, sympathetic characters who feel completely real, and unstinting and moving depiction of deep emotion. If you have those three, you’re there.

Your newest story in The Hellions of Halstead Hall series is A HELLION IN HER BED. Can you tell us how many books are planned for this series?  How THE TRUTH ABOUT LORD STONEVILLE and A HELLION IN HER BED are related, and for someone who has not had the pleasure of reading them, can you give us a brief summary about each of these stories? Do they need to be read in order?

I plan to write five books for the series, one for each of the siblings. The premise of the series is that the matriarch of the family, Grandmother Hetty, determined to see her grandchildren married and settled before she dies, gives her grandchildren an ultimatum: they must all marry within one year or they will all lose their inheritance (in other words, it’s a “group” ultimatum—kind of like when your mom says you and your siblings will all be punished if one of you doesn’t rat out the one who did something bad). The Truth About Lord Stoneville was about the eldest brother, Oliver, and A Hellion in Her Bed is about the second oldest, Jarret. In all the books, the siblings try to find a way around Gran’s ultimatum. In Oliver’s book, he tries engaging himself to a woman he thinks Gran will hate, and in the course of the pretend engagement, falls in love with her. In Jarret’s book, he gets his grandmother to agree to rescind the ultimatum for him if he’ll run the family brewery for a year. But that becomes a little difficult when he meets a fetching brewster who wants his help with her own family brewery.

If you had an opportunity to provide only a two or three sentence "teaser" quote from A HELLION IN HER BED, to grab the attention of potential readers and give them a glimpse and feeling of what the story is about what would it be?

Miss Lake cast Lord Jarret an arch glance. ‘I certainly didn’t set out to spend the evening with three unconscionable rogues, who have the audacity to suggest that I need a husband, apparently to protect me from the likes of them.’

Masters laughed.  ‘She does have a point, Jarret.’

‘Don’t encourage her,’ Jarret snapped.

Tell us about your hero, Lord Jarrett Sharpe.  What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine, Annabel, fall in love with him despite him being a notorious gambler and her thinking that he is an unrepentant rogue? And can you tell us a little bit about their story in A HELLION IN HER BED?

Jarret has always had easy, uncomplicated relationships with women, so meeting a complicated woman—with a complicated past—forces him to re-evaluate all his previous assumptions about what he wants out of life. What I like about him is that as her past unfolds, he takes each new surprise in stride. Even the surprise that floors him only does so long enough for him to catch his bearings. At heart he’s a sensible man, which I happen to like.  After Oliver, who was a bit of a drama king (sorry, but he was), Jarret is more even-tempered.

Their story starts with a wager on a card game that Jarret can’t resist—if she wins, he agrees to help her with her family’s brewery.  If he wins, she agrees to share his bed for one night.  It goes from there.

Annabel is a woman with many secrets and finds herself in dire straits, hoping that Jarrett will be her family’s salvation.  What makes her the perfect woman for him and makes her irresistibly tempting despite the many risks?

For one thing, Annabel is sensible, too. That appeals to Jarret.  For another, her passion for her family is irresistible to a boy who lost his parents at the age of 13 and has felt adrift ever since.  Though he does have his siblings, he’s always felt abandoned by his grandmother because of her refusal when he was young to let him continue going with her to the brewery after his parents’ deaths.  Watching Annabel dedicate herself to not abandoning her family endears her to him.  Also, she’s very earthy, and that’s something he’s always liked in women but doesn’t find among the sort of women he’s expected to court.

What's your favorite scene or moment from A HELLION IN HER BED, and why? Can you describe it for us without giving too much away?

I love the final part where he tells her he loves her. She’d described him earlier as being a river and her being a tree, and she’d said that the river could never stay to be with the tree and the tree couldn’t go with the river. In that final scene, he says that he doesn’t want to be a river anymore—he wants to be the earth the tree roots in, and asks her if she’ll be his tree.  I know it’s a weird sort of love scene, but I cried writing it.

What are five fun facts about you or this book that readers would love to know?

  1. The brewery situation with Hetty is similar to that of Mrs. Hester Thrale, whose husband died, leaving her the brewery (she had only daughters, just like Hetty, so no son could inherit). She didn’t have the technical expertise to run it, however, and rather than rely on a manager she couldn’t oversee, she agreed to a sale of the brewery, and she and her daughters lived off the proceeds. But here’s the weird thing—when I conceived of this story (and Hetty)—I didn’t know about Hester Thrale’s history. I learned about her when I was researching the brewing stuff, having already decided that the family income would come from a brewery. So how weird is that?
  2. The Sharpe siblings were based on a real family, however—the Barry family, headed by the Earl of Barrymore. Those four siblings lost their parents at a young age and were raised by an indulgent grandmother, too. They were wild as zebras and just as interesting, so I couldn’t resist using them in a book (or five . . .).
  3. Oliver’s character first appeared in my previous series, where I used him as a red herring, so readers wouldn’t guess the real identity of Cousin Michael (the mysterious benefactor to the School for Young Ladies, who ends up with the schoolmistress).  But Oliver leaped onto the page so dramatically that he stole every scene he was in, so I couldn’t leave him without a book.  In fact, I figured he deserved a whole series—and readers agreed.  He won a poll on my website, asking which gentleman from that series should be a hero in one of my next books!
  4. I do a lot of my plotting while swimming, working jigsaw puzzles, or walking in my neighborhood. Oh, and I take what my husband calls, “magic showers,” because I get ideas in the shower.
  5. I don’t like beer (I’m more of a tequila girl). So it’s a bit odd to be writing a series about a brewery.

Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

Minerva’s story, How to Woo a Reluctant Lady, comes out January 18, 2011, and I’m writing Gabe’s story now.  Minerva, as Hellions readers know, is the sister who writes gothic novels, and a lot of readers have said they are eagerly awaiting her book.

If you could ask readers a question what would it be?

How many books in a romance series is too many?

Finally, just for fun . . . if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

Daydreaming is good for the soul, so do it often!

Furious at his grandmother's ultimatum to marry or lose his inheritance, Lord Jarret Sharpe wagers his luck—and his heart—at the card table against a most unlikely opponent.

Mired in scandal after his parents' mysterious deaths, notorious gambler Lord Jarret Sharpe agrees to tamely run the family brewery for a year if his Machiavellian grandmother rescinds her ultimatum that he marry. But the gambler in him can't resist when beguiling Annabel Lake proposes a wager. If she wins their card game, he must help save her family's foundering brewery. But if he wins, she must spend a night in his bed. The outcome sets off a chain of events that threatens to destroy all his plans . . . and unveils the secret Annabel has held for so long. When Jarret discovers the darker reason behind her wager, he forces her into another one—and this time he intends to win not just her body, but her heart.
