Summary from the publisher:

Abandoned at the altar . . .

Lady Beatrix Danbury had always known she would marry William Mallory. She'd loved him forever and she'd never doubted he loved her, too. But when she made him choose between their life together or his lifelong dream, Will chose the latter . . . and left two weeks before their wedding.

Return of the duke . . .

Will has no illusions that Beatrix would welcome him back with open arms, but six years did not dim his love or desire for her. The only problem is, she's about to marry someone else. Someone safe and predictable . . . the complete opposite of Will. But can he stop the wedding of the season and win Beatrix back, or is it just too late?

Julia's Musings:

Last Spring I was introduced to Laura Lee Guhrke by chance and happenstance. Reading Eloisa James’ Barnes and Noble column about heroines with careers, I stumbled across Guhrke’s name. Her Girl-Bachelors series sounded interesting and it was available at the library as an eBook. I read it and loved it. So I read the next one and the next until I devoured all four, leaving me with a fresh take on historical romance that I had desperately needed.

Needless to say when I heard that she was coming out with a new series, I was one of the first people in line to get it at the library. But this first book left me underwhelmed. Coming from her Girl-Bachelor series, which pushed the boundaries of what I had come to expect in a historical romance, this book was a disappointment. My boundary pushing was really nowhere to be found.

Even if we take away my overly high expectations and just focus on the story, I am still slightly underwhelmed. The book started off awesome. There is a car! A car with a crank! How often is that in a historical romance? First time I’ve ever read it. But as we delved more into the story and less on the awesome side details, I realized I wasn’t connecting with the main characters. There was something about my hero that I just didn’t like. I still can’t put my finger on what it is exactly

Frankly, I was bored. The same two thoughts were repeated ad nauseum by our hero and heroine, and at the end, I just felt like I could not believe in the characters growth. I couldn’t help but think of where this story could have gone. Thus you have a completely underwhelmed me.

You know what is funny though? I am still going to read the sequel. Because the best thing about this book was the car and do you know where the car came from? The awesome secondary character named Julia. And her book is next.

Overall thoughts? It didn’t click with me. According to Goodreads though I am in the minority. Despite this, I still think she is a great author and am willing to chalk this up to a fluke of nature and Julia’s book will blow me out of the water with it’s awesomeness.

And since I don’t want to make my first review here completely negative, I would highly recommend checking out Guhrke’s Girl-Bachelors series. The first book is And Then He Kissed Her. If you want something different from your normal historical romance (set in the late 1800s, strong female heroines that are not defined by men that actually work), this is your series!

Awesome! How exciting! Just to add an addendum, Laura Lee Guhrke's second book in the series, Scandal of the Year, came out yesterday. Great improvement! I reviewed it at my blog if you are curious.
