Guest Author & Giveaway: Christina Phillips featuring Captive

Wednesday, February 16

Have I ever mentioned that I lived in Rome for a bit while in college?  I did, and have to say that it was one of the best experiences of my life.  To be surrounded by all of the history that still influences us today was amazing.  Which is one of the reasons why I think I love romances that feature Roman heroes.  Just don't ask me any Italian, or Latin for that matter, because despite living there I'm absolutely horrible with foreign languages.  So it's a good thing that my guest author's newest novel is in English even though it has a Roman warrior hero :)

Author Christina Phillips is my guest today to share her newest erotic historical romance, CAPTIVE, with us today with an interview, a special exclusive excerpt for Musings readers and a giveaway.  Read and enjoy!

Welcome back to Seductive Musings Christina! There seems to be quite a bit of interest in the Roman culture at the moment.  For instance, the TV series Spartacus:  Blood and Sand, and the upcoming movie, The Eagle, in addition to your romances FORBIDDEN and CAPTIVE.  What do you think is the appeal and what first drew you to the Roman culture & this time period that made it so seductively compelling to your muse?

Thanks for having me back! I’m very happy to be here :-)

As for the appeal, well I’m only surprised the Roman era isn’t more popular! There’s intrigue, conflict, all sorts of forbidden love and of course the sexy warriors with their muscular calves and thighs. I don’t think that’s been taken into account as much as it should :-)

I’ve always been fascinated by the Roman culture, but it never occurred to me to write ancient historical romances until Maximus commanded me. And once the world of Forbidden began to unfold in my mind I was so enthralled by it all I knew I had to explore it.

Your newest novel in the Forbidden series is CAPTIVE. Can you tell us how many books are planned for this series?  How FORBIDDEN and CAPTIVE are related, and can you give us a brief summary about each of these stories? Do they need to be read in order?

I’m currently a third of the way through book 3 in the series, but we need to see how the market likes FORBIDDEN and CAPTIVE before we know the fate of ENSLAVED. So, to answer your question as to how many books are in the series, I’ve planned out ENSLAVED (the story of Nimue, who appears right at the end of CAPTIVE) and I have ideas for another book based on a warrior who was in FORBIDDEN. I have everything crossed that one day I’ll be able to tell their stories!

CAPTIVE starts six months after FORBIDDEN ends. The books don’t have to be read in order but events that occurred in FORBIDDEN are referred to in CAPTIVE. But each book is a standalone.

FORBIDDEN is the story of the illicit love between a Druid princess, Carys, and her Roman lover, Maximus. They not only have to overcome the prejudice of their respective people but also the fury of the gods and the insanity of the High Druid.

CAPTIVE follows Morwyn, who is the best friend of Carys. After the events at the end of FORBIDDEN she lost her faith in her goddess and is on her way to join the rebels fighting the Roman invaders. Unfortunately she’s attacked, and much to her disgust is rescued by the hero, Bren.

There’s an adage that says “write what you know”.  What did you need to learn or what fascinating tidbits of information did you find in preparation to writing this book and how did it get incoporated into the series?

I needed to do a lot of research on the Romans so I felt comfortable writing about their world. When it came to the Druids I discovered there was next to nothing known about them that didn’t come from contemporary Roman writers. I decided since they were inevitably biased I wouldn’t take too much notice of the Druids’ bloodthirsty reputation for human sacrifice!

The events that propel the plot of CAPTIVE are based on a real battle that took place in AD 51 when a Briton king, Caratacus, engaged the Roman Legions in what he hoped would be a decisive victory over his enemies. I was intrigued as to how Caratacus and his rebels remained hidden from the Romans for so long and this became a vital thread of CAPTIVE.

Most authors have a synopsis, outline or idea of what the story they are about to write will be.  However, sometimes during the writing process your “Muse” might speak to you and lead you in a different or unplanned direction.  What surprised or changed the most from your original intent for CAPTIVE?

I was very surprised, and that’s putting it mildly, when Aeron, the villain from FORBIDDEN, managed to weave himself back into the plot of CAPTIVE!

If you had an opportunity to provide only a two or three sentence "teaser" quote from CAPTIVE, to grab the attention of potential readers and give them a glimpse and feeling of what the story is about what would it be?
This time, for one brief breath-stealing moment, he flashed her a true smile, and again she was staggered by how much younger, how much less battle weary, he looked.

She doubted he was any older than her. And somehow, inexplicably, that realization caused the dull knot in the pit of her stomach to tighten.

“Then I’m safe for another few days.” He turned to leave, then suddenly faced her once again and cradled her jaw in a fleeting, tender gesture before swinging on his heel.

A ragged gasp tore from her lips and she hugged her waist as she watched her Gaul disappear around the corner.

The thought lingered, probed deep into her mind, worried around the edges of her consciousness.

Her Gaul.

A shiver trickled along her spine, caused the hairs on her arms to rise in disbelief. Since when had she started to think of him as her Gaul?

Tell us about your hero, Bren.  What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine, Morwyn fall in love with him despite being his captive and sworn enemy? And can you tell us a little bit about their story in CAPTIVE?

When Morwyn is first captured by Bren the only thought in her mind - besides trying to ignore the desire that sizzles between them - is how soon she can kill him. But it isn’t long before, despite her best intentions, she sees another side to this tough Gaul auxiliary. Although she believes him to be her enemy he treats her with respect and as she gets to know him she reluctantly begins to admire his sense of honor. She realises there is a chink in the armor surrounding his heart and secretly cherishes the moments he lets his guard down sufficiently to show her a softer side of his personality.

CAPTIVE is the story of Bren, a tough warrior who’s haunted by his violent past. Far from being Morwyn’s bitterest enemy as she imagines, he’s been undercover in the Roman Legions for the last three years. But he can’t tell Morwyn the truth, because the truth could get them both killed.

CAPTIVE is also about Morwyn, a powerful Druid priestess, who has pledged to rid her land of the Roman invaders. She’s tough, independent - and ends up falling for the wrong man.

Morwyn, your heroine, is quite the seductress despite her vow of celibacy.  What makes her the perfect woman for Bren?  What are some of the qualities that attracts him to her and makes her irresistibly tempting and could have him succombing to his dangerous desires?

Besides the scorching attraction that blazes between Bren and Morwyn from the first moment they meet, Bren is soon captivated by her courage and resilience. For the first time since he’s taken on the identity of another man, here is someone - and a woman at that - who is not afraid to stand up to him and tell him exactly what she thinks. He finds himself speaking before thinking, something he’s not done in years, and he enjoys her fearless remarks and sense of humor. When he’s with Morwyn he starts to forget the horror of his past and begins to dream of a future without killing.

What's your favorite scene or moment from CAPTIVE, and why? Can you describe it (or provide a short excerpt) for us without giving too much away?

One of my favorite scenes is when Morwyn witnesses Bren doing something that shakes her to the core of her soul. The decision she makes - to stay with him instead of escaping - makes her face how much this man means to her. It’s an equally pivotal moment for Bren as he realizes Morwyn is prepared to stick by him, no matter how low she believes he’s sunk.

Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

I’ve just finished a historical romance set in the Highlands (yes! More sexy warriors in skirts :-) ) and am currently writing a contemporary paranormal romance.

If you could ask readers to finish a sentence what would it be?

The door slammed open and he stood on the threshold, a windswept alpha warrior; then his dark gaze clashed with hers and...

A new erotic historical series set in a world of magical heroines and sexy warriors.

When the Romans destroyed her world, Morwyn took a vow of celibacy to spite her goddess. Then she's captured by a mercenary whose animal charms and chiseled body will test her conviction...

Brennus has spent three years undercover in the Roman Legion. So when his men brutalize the fiery Celtic beauty, he saves her-by claiming her as his own.

As they near Roman headquarters, Morwyn resolves to honor her vow of celibacy-but if Brennus were to ravage her, could she be blamed for enjoying his body? With just a hint of seduction, sooner or later the warrior will succumb to his exquisite captive.

I don't use Amazon to earn money, I use it because the widgets are cool, easy to use, and serve my purposes to showcase books & such with minimal effort, but most importantly they have great prices and offer both new and used items. As a book addict I love that I can find just about anything I want in one place. If you are going to purchase a featured book anyway, and you know you won't pay more by using the links on this blog than you would by visiting Amazon on your own, I will be eternally grateful for supporting this blog by using the links, and don't forget that the referral fees from your purchases will sponsor the "Reader Rewards" giveaways :)

she could see the smoldering desire and passion in his eyes as his eyes roamed over her body. She could feel the heat of his eyes on her body as if he actually touched her and she trembled wth desire. He walked over to her and pulled her in his arms kissing her passionately.

Hi Christina!! I have both of these at the top of my wish list!

The door slammed open and he stood on the threshold, a windswept alpha warrior; then his dark gaze clashed with hers and her heart started racing. She hadn't seen him in 3 years and thought he was dead. Then everything went black.

Hi Modokker, thanks! I love how the warrior takes matters into his own hands there!!!

gamistress66 February 16, 2011 at 8:06 PM

Congrats on the new release. I think the combination of the Druids & Romans makes for a very interesting combination. That you've been able to successfully release 2 books to date with such a unique time period as it basis (& to wonderful reviews) is a testament to your ability. It also makes me want to try them out even more.

The door slammed open and he stood on the threshold, a windswept alpha warrior; then his dark gaze clashed with hers and... sparks flew while tensions rose high. Whether from the fierceness of the anger at each other or the undeniable pull of the passions simmering between them, neither could say for sure.

Great Interview and Congrats on Captive's release! I'd love to win a copy of either. They both sound like excellent reads.

The door slammed open and he stood on the threshold, a windswept alpha warrior; then his dark gaze clashed with hers and... she knew that this man would either be her saving grace or her downfall. The feelings that he evoked would be both heaven and hell, but she up for the challenge of experiencing whatever this glorious male had to offer.
