Guest Author & Giveaway: Kieran Kramer featuring Cloudy with a Chance of Marriage

Thursday, April 14

I love a mix a romance and comedy in books, in movies, in life...because really what makes you feel better than laughter and love :)  If you have those two things I think you can survive just about anything.  Put the two together and the combination is least for me.

Last year I discovered author Kieran Kramer because of the title of her debut novel, When Harry Met Molly...a take on the movie When Harry Met Sally.  I loved the movie, and will in fact watch it whenever I happen upon it on TV (much like When You've Got Mail) so I just had to check out the book with the catchy title.  I had no idea what to expect.  I hadn't read any reviews, hadn't seen it on any blogs...the only thing I did know was that she was a new to me author.  It looked cute, and sounded cute, and there was a cover quote from Julia Quinn, so since I enjoy Julia's style of lighter romances, I thought I would give the Harry and Molly a try.  I'm so glad I did.  I loved it! LOVED, LOVED, LOVED!

I consider my discover of When Harry Met Molly one of the happiest accidental finds of 2010, which is why I am so excited to have Kieran as my guest today to share the upcoming addition to her Impossible Bachelor series, Cloudy with a Chance of Marriage, with us today.  Read and enjoy!

Welcome to Seductive Musings Kieran!  Congratulations on the upcoming release of your newest historical romance, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE.  Please tell us a little bit about yourself, as well as the last book you read that you loved and why.

Thanks for having me here! I write lighthearted Regency historicals for St. Martin’s Press and have just finished writing the last book in my four-book Impossible Bachelors series! So today I’m taking it easy—I live in a small, sleepy Southern town outside of Charleston, SC, and our annual azalea festival is going on. So this morning I was out and about, enjoying Spring, people-watching, and munching on kettle corn popped fresh from a giant cauldron!

As for what I did before I became a published author, I did lots of things. I’ve spent most of the past eighteen years at home. But in my mid-twenties I worked for the CIA. I’ve also had my own health column for a regional section of the Charlotte Observer, where I also wrote a few feature stories, like the one about the cow that escaped its pasture and went running through a Wal-Mart parking lot. I’ve been a high school and middle school English teacher, which is a story unto itself. I’m also a game show veteran, having won on both Family Feud and Wheel of Fortune. I’m a karaoke enthusiast, too—my favorite karaoke song is “Love Will Keep Us Together,” by the Captain and Tenille. My bio also says I’m a general adventurer. Anyone who’s had kids, dogs, or cats is a general adventurer, don’t you think, LOL??

The last book I read that I LOVED was Darynda Jones’s FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT. Full disclosure: we both got picked up by the same editor at St. Martin’s Press the same year, so I was definitely curious about my fellow SMP author’s debut novel! Let me just say this: her voice is so funny and engaging, you laugh like every other line. Sometimes EVERY line. She cracks me up. I can’t wait to officially meet her at RWA this summer in New York City. But the book is more than just funny--it’s suspenseful and cool and has all these dead people talking in it!! And the heroine, Charley, is such a sassy, self-deprecating character!! I love her.

You have to read this book. I can’t wait for SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT.

Your newest story in The Impossible Bachelor series is CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE. Can you tell us how many books are planned for this series?  How WHEN HARRY MET MOLLY, DUKES TO THE LEFT OF ME, PRINCES TO THE RIGHT,  and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE are related, and for someone who has not had the pleasure of reading them, can you give us a brief summary about each of these stories? And do they need to be read in order?

There are four books in the series. Each one is about a different “Impossible Bachelor,” London gentlemen who are great friends with each other and happen also to be irresistible to women, especially debutantes and their matchmaking mothers. The Bachelors are skilled at avoiding the marriage altar—that is, until each one meets his own match!

The books don’t have to be read in order, but I think it’s preferable that they are. WHEN HARRY MET MOLLY is the first story. Under duress, Harry and Molly are both at a hunt party at which the gentlemen’s mistresses must compete in a sort of mistress pageant. They must work together to make it through the competition, and in the process, unintended sparks fly!

The second book, DUKES TO THE LEFT OF ME, PRINCES TO THE RIGHT, tells Nicholas’s story. He’s a man of mystery, but Poppy will have none of it. When she’s forced by her father to become engaged to him, she insists on joining Nicholas in all his adventures and finds herself involved even more than she cared to be!

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE tells the story of Stephen and Jilly. He’s back from sea and ready to amuse himself, sure that he can leave his responsibilities behind him. But when he becomes entangled in a neighborhood crisis, he understands that causes on land can be as vital as those at sea, particularly if the cause involves one stubborn, gorgeous bookseller named Jilly Jones!

The fourth and final book is IF YOU GIVE A GIRL A VISCOUNT, and it tells the story of Charlie and Daisy. I’ll save those details for next time we talk, but suffice to say neither Charlie nor Daisy ever expect to fall in love with each other, especially when they are at such cross purposes! It takes place in Scotland with a lively cast of characters to lend the story some local color.

One of the things that I love the most about this series are the characters;  not only the hero and the heroine, but the whole cast of characters that comprise the book, as well as the humor and emotion that you infuse your stories’s no wonder that readers love them!  If you had to write a recipe to describe the elements you like to include in a book that you are writing what would you consider to be the perfect blend of ingredients?  What makes a romance a great love story?

Thanks so much! I’m so glad you love all the characters! I like to create a world, not just two people falling in love against their will in a vacuum. Overall, I like to keep things hopping.

So, if I had to write a recipe describing elements I’d use in a book, it would go like this:

1 cup sexual tension
1 scoop of humor
A sprinkling of eccentric characters
1 hero who thinks he’s got the world by the tail
1 heroine who proves to him that he doesn’t

Mix up and let things sizzle for a while, then when the story’s good and hot, throw in a surprise or two.  Turn up the heat until the whole thing’s about to burn itself out. Right before it does, remove immediately so that the plot’s cooked just right. Slide the story between the beautifully designed front and back covers of a book and garnish with a happy ending.

Most authors have a synopsis, outline or idea of what the story they are about to write will be.  However, sometimes during the writing process your “Muse” might speak to you and lead you in a different or unplanned direction.  What surprised or changed the most from your original intent of CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE?

Hmmm, good question. I don’t mean to be contrary, but what surprised me most about this book was how much I stuck to the original idea! I mean, from the very beginning, I knew what was going to happen, and I thought, “There’s no way that can happen.” But it did. I was sure something would change. Yet somehow, it all came together and made sense! Usually, this sticking-to-the-original-idea doesn’t happen so much. Often, I’ll have a synopsis, and things change a LOT.

Oh, wait. I do remember one thing that changed. Stephen’s family was going to be in it more. He was going to visit his mother and sister and his old grandfather. That never happened. His backstory changed. But that wasn’t a big deal, really. I did write a whole chapter on that, but I scrapped it early on.

If you had an opportunity to provide only a two or three sentence "teaser" quote from CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE to grab the attention of potential readers and give them a glimpse and feeling of what the story is about, what would it be?

The captain did have particularly gleaming white teeth set off by his swarthy tan, but Jilly did her best to ignore his sterling good looks. "I don't believe we can help you," she told her new neighbor, the rag still in her hand. "We've no brandy here. Only books."

In this teaser, Jilly’s pert remark reveals that she’s a bluestocking  on the defensive against the sensual nature of the captain.

For some readers the first sentence of a book is one of the most important moments, maybe even just as important as the last sentence in the story.  What is the first sentence from CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE, and what do you think it says about the story to come?

Books were Jilly's great escape, but unless she chose to use them as missiles—which she'd considered but decided against as they were her source of livelihood now—even they couldn't save her from the unpleasant task before her.

Jilly is clearly conflicted between her passions and intellect. She uses books to retreat to a safe place, but the captain gets under her skin to the extent that she’s willing to use a book for an unintended, impulsive purpose: as a weapon to hurl at him.

Tell us about your hero, Captain Stephen Arrow, and your heroine Jilly Jones.  What do you think will make readers fall in love with your hero, much like his heroine? And can you tell us a little bit about their story in CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE?

Stephen is used to being in command. So when he’s put in a position in which he’s not always in command—where he’s vulnerable--he’s an intriguing character. Jilly thinks she can move on in life without finishing grappling with the problems she had before she came to London. But she learns she can never truly start over until she faces her greatest fears. Stephen and Jilly challenge each other to rise to the occasion, even at their weakest, most desperate moments, which is when we most fear losing love and connection, isn’t it? Jilly and Stephen have to learn to trust themselves and each other, which we know isn’t easy when you’ve had barriers up to protect yourself.

I recently wrote a blog post about the lack of “commoner” heroes in historical romance, and how they are some of my favorite and most memorable characters, so you can only imagine how happy I was to learn that your hero Stephen is not a Lord, but a Captain. When writing his character what were your reasons for making him a commoner,  and did this decision allow you certain freedoms, or restrictions?

I simply decided to show that you don’t have to be a peer of the realm to be an attractive male character in Regency London…so thanks for noticing that! Think of all the accomplished people of the time—scientists, military heroes like Captain Arrow, artists, composers, philosophers, entrepreneurs, and inventors—who are “passed over” as possible leading men in our novels but who could make incredible heroes. One reason I chose a Navy captain is because my husband, brother, and my father-in-law are Navy men. So in a way, my choice of profession for Stephen is a tribute to them.  I didn’t run into any different sorts of scenarios with Stephen, other than the fact that he clearly doesn’t need to worry about being the heir, carrying on the line, etc….all those problems peer heroes need to worry about. Often, the plot written about a lord, earl, marquess, baron, viscount, or duke focuses on a problem unique to the peerage, so it was a refreshing change not to have to go there.

What's your favorite scene or moment from CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE, and why? Can you describe it (or provide a short excerpt) for us without giving too much away?

Hmmm, that’s a toughie. I have such fun writing all different parts of a book. I really love writing when the hero and heroine first meet. And then I love writing their sex scenes! And much as I hate to see the hero and heroine have plot and relationship crises, I like writing the parts where they realize they have a lot of hard work to do before happiness can be theirs. And who doesn’t love writing a resolution? One scene that particularly gives me pleasure to think about comes near the end! I envision it in full cinematic color (I often see my books as movies in my head). That’s all I can say. :>)

What are five fun facts about you or this book, that readers would love to know?

  1. I write in my office, which is a converted back porch. The screens were replaced with big sheets of glass. For company, I have my two tabby cats, Benny and Joon, who are brother and sister rescued from an animal shelter, and Striker, my black lab mix. Benny and Joon sit on the shelf beneath the windows and look out while I write, or they curl up behind my head. Striker comes in and out all day to say hi and beg for a Milk Bone.
  2. One of my favorite characters in CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE is Jilly’s friend Otis. I’ll let you meet him in the book. :>)
  3. I love, love, LOVE American Idol. I get a lot of my writing inspiration from that show. The singers are told to be themselves, show no fear, and connect with the audience. I try to do that in my writing.
  4. I’ve always been drawn to comedy and offbeat humor. Laughing, I think, is something we need to do every day!
  5. In every book in The Impossible Bachelors series, I put at least an excerpt from a poem. CLOUDY is no exception! I included part of one of my favorite poems I studied in college.
Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

Thanks for asking! IF YOU GIVE A GIRL A VISCOUNT is the final book in The Impossible Bachelor series. It comes out this November and tells the story of Charlie and Daisy. Let’s just say they have the exact opposite goals at the beginning of the book, which makes for an interesting dynamic. As I said earlier, this one’s set in Scotland and has its own cast of fun characters that I hope you’ll love!

If you could ask readers a question what would it be?

We’ve all heard this before, but I’m really curious what my reader friends would say:

If you knew you could do something and not fail, what would it be? In other words, what’s your dream? And are you hesitating to go after it—or are you acting as if you can’t fail?

Thanks for sharing!

Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

Love yourself where you are right now.

Every woman knows about London’s Impossible Bachelors. They’re daring, debonair—and downright impossible to resist…

Every woman dreams of saying “I do.” Jilly Jones did—and years of a deeply imperfect marriage followed. Now living in London and working in a charming bookshop, the free-spirited Jilly is perfectly content with her newfound independence…until she meets a dashing naval officer who sparks her longing for a real happily ever after.

Captain Stephen Arrow is just home after years of service, and he’s in no hurry to give up his hard-won freedom. The meddlesome bluestocking Jilly Jones is exactly the kind of woman he doesn’t need…But there’s something about her that keeps drawing Stephen back to the bookshop. With her sparkling wit and understated beauty, she seems like a surprisingly real match for Stephen. But will a scandalous chapter in Jilly’s past stand in the way of their heated attraction? For this bachelor, nothing is impossible…

Congrats on the RT award for "When Harry Met Molly" (loved Hildur!)!

If I could, I would go to back to school, once I figure out what I want to study further, of course. I think I may give a pass to engineering this time and do something different - acupuncture? Business school like everyone else in my family? If I do decide, I'd love to go.

Looking at the cover of "If You Give A Girl A Viscount", is the male model Paul Marron?

Hey, Ladies,

I love ALL your ideas!!! And I hope you go for them. Sometimes fear is disguised as "being reasonable," or "having common sense." If you still have these dreams, even after you've looked at them from a practicality viewpoint, then it means you're meant to pursue them. Maybe now is not the right time--or maybe it is. My point is, we have a place in our gut that is more true to who we are than the place in our head is--the brain!! You know? Trust that place in your gut that's whispering to you. The brain can fool us sometimes--but the gut never does.

So good luck pursuing your dreams. And know that I wish the best for each of you!!!

Oh, and Sheree, I don't know who the male models are on my books. It sure would be fun to meet them, LOL!!!

Everyone have a great day, and I'll be checking in later!

I would love to open my own bookstore/bakery and cafe. It combines both things that I love. Books and baking.

I can't wait to read this book. I am loving all of your books so far and I can't wait to pick up a copy of this one. I love that you are actually able to get me to laugh with your books(not an easy task).

Congratulations on the nominations! When Harry Met Molly was such a great book!!

Tamsyn April 14, 2011 at 9:45 AM

Congratulations! The book sounds like a great read. I need to check out When Harry Met Molly.
If I know I can't fail then I would love to be a writer and write lots and lots of books!

Danielle, I'm so glad my stories can make you laugh out loud! Don't we all need to laugh? EVERY DAY, is my motto! We laugh a lot at our house. We have a lot of stresses, just like any family, but we always try to find the goofy/funny/absurd side to everything.

And Tamsyn, I hope you get started on that writing dream of yours. Go buy yourself a pretty notebook and pen and just start exploring.

Thanks to all of you for your support!

Kathleen, I love your idea of selling all things romance, including books! Teddy bears, chocolates, lingerie, and more? I'm just guessing! That'd be fun!

Tore, I think you'd be good at anything that you set your mind to doing! And what is "good" anyway? If it makes YOU happy, it's good.

Robin, I love your scenario on the warm beaches!! And sound like a creative type. What kind of design?

Estella, a yarn shop!! Cool!!!! Do you read any of Debbie Macomber's books? She loves knitting and even has a knitting book out.

It's been great getting to know a little bit about you...please feel free to continue this conversation on my Facebook author page: In fact, right now I'm running a contest. If you "like" my page (just click the" like" button at the top) you're ALMOST entered to win a Kindle! You have to go one step further and "like" my friend Sarah MacLean's page. My dream is to have enough money to retire early and travel. And I'm not following the dream because I don't have the money and I don't know how to get it unless I rob a bank, LOL. Of course, winning the lottery might work, except you have to buy a ticket to win, and I never do.
I loved When Harry Met Sally and I'm looking forward to reading your new release very much.

Hi Kieran! You are my "new" favorite author! I got your first book because I've never seen a historical romance novel with my name in the title. After reading it, I immediately went out and bought the next one. Your writing reminds me a lot of Catherine Coulter's Sherbrooke Bride series or Julie Garwood's historical romances where you laugh out loud while reading them. I just love the heroines!
Not sure about what I'd like to do if given the chance. Maybe paint - I use to do that in high school eons ago and was pretty good at it. For my fortune, it's: Dance as if no one is watching...

If I knew I couldn't fail, I'd want to be a singer. That's the one talent I always wished I had. Unfortunately, in real life, I can't carry a note so it's destined to always be just a dream.

I've got the first two of Kieran's books and I'd love to win a copy of this one. I just love her titles.
