Guest Author & Giveaway: Olivia Cunning featuring Rock Hard

Tuesday, April 19

Anyone who's ever had a friend or a relationship with someone of the opposite sex knows that men and women communicate differently and have different emotional needs.  I mean, there's a whole self help section of books that deals with this topic....remember Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus?  While frustrating in person, reading about a couple overcoming these differences and learning to connect on every level so that their feelings for each other can develop into a lasting love makes for some great romance novel reading.

Author Olivia Cunning is my guest today to share a little bit about her hero and heroine's Mars and Venus issues in her newest Erotic Romance, Rock Hard.  Read and enjoy!

Married to Rock. Eventually.

The lead characters of my latest erotic romance novel, Rock Hard, have a difficult relationship. Jessica Chase is a law student hell-bent on making it on her own. Sedric “Sed” Lionheart is the lead singer of Sinners. He’s used to taking the leadership role and having people jump at the opportunity to follow his instructions. Jessica has issue with anyone trying to control her life and that’s how she perceives Sed, as controlling. Sed’s not really trying to control her. He’s trying to make her happy. Yeah, not working out for him so well. Their relationship is volatile and conflicted, but so incredibly hot that they can’t keep their hands off each other. If they’re going to find their happily ever after, they’re going to have to overcome numerous challenges.

Their first challenge... Overcome past hurts. Though they were once engaged, Jessica and Sed called it quits two years ago. While they might pretend they are doing just fine without each other, their thoughts and actions speak louder than words. And when they meet again, well... there’s much more going on between them than sex, but there’s no way either one of them will admit it.
SHE SAID: Jessica left the bedroom, closing the door quietly behind her. She burst into the tiny bathroom and locked herself inside. Caught off guard by the wrenching pain in her chest, she sucked a raged breath into her lungs.

Sed meant nothing to her. Nothing. She was over him. And she hated him. She hated him so much. She pounded the flimsy wall with her fist. Hated him… hated…

She bit her lip, trying to stop its trembling. No good. She lowered her face into her hands and let the tears fall, struggling to keep her sobs as quiet as possible.

He had never experienced this kind of hurt. Just once she’d like to take him down a notch. Make him suffer, like she suffered. Make him pay for his callous disregard for other people’s feelings.
HE SAID: Sed poked Jessica in the ribs and she glared up at him. Just as he’d suspected. Her eyes and nose were red and puffy.

    “You were so crying.”

“Just leave me alone, Sed. You’re the last person on Earth I want to see right now.”

She was the only person on Earth he wanted to see. Ever.

He let her pass and entered the bathroom, closing the door quietly. He didn’t really need to use the bathroom. He’d just wanted to be near her. Even if she did spout her hatred at him. Hatred was better than nothing. Hatred he could deal with. He couldn’t deal with nothing. He’d tried to deal with nothing for two years. It never went away. Just sat there inside his chest as a big empty hole.

Their second challenge... Stop arguing long enough to listen to each other. These two both have a stubborn streak a mile wide. They are perfectly matched, but Jessica isn’t willing to let Sed take the lead and Sed doesn’t know how to curtail his dominating side. Maybe if they talked it out. Nah, working out their relationship frustrations in the bedroom will eventually solve all of their problems. Right? Of course. Who needs conversation when you have multiple orgasms?

SHE SAID: She scowled at him.

He scratched behind his ear. “Forget I said that.”

“I’m not too proud to split the rent. Splitting the rent is fine.”

    “You’re yelling.”

Of course, she was yelling. Why wouldn’t she be? “No, I don’t want someone to take care of me like I’m incompetent and boss me around and tell me how to live my life, but—”

He covered her mouth with one hand. “You’re still yelling.”

She slapped his hand away. “Let me finish.”

    “Don’t be mad.”

“Don’t tell me how to feel.”

He pulled her onto his lap and sank a hand into her hair to tilt her head back. His mouth claimed hers. She stiffened and tried to twist away, but his free arm tightened around her body and pinned her against his chest. He kissed her until she was clinging to his shoulders like a drowning kitten.

He drew away and looked down at her with a self-satisfied grin. “That’s better.”

HE SAID: “Did you miss me, baby? Is that why you called begging for a place to stay?” Sed murmured, his brain obviously not functioning.

Jessica stiffened, moved from his lap, and started to climb from the hot tub.

He opened his eyes to look at her. “Jess, where are you going?”

The look she gave him might just freeze the steaming water around him.

“I didn’t call begging for a place to stay,” she sputtered.

Her slick, wet skin begged for his touch as she hauled herself out of the hot tub and darted into the apartment through the open glass doors. He sighed loudly and forced himself to stand, water pouring from his body in torrents. He hadn’t meant it that way. Would he ever get this right with her? He honestly didn’t know how and it frustrated him to no end.

Their third challenge... Learn to work together. Both Sed and Jessica have a truly caring and protective side. If they can find a common goal, maybe they can figure out this compromise “stuff”, instead of feeling as if they’re pitted against each other.

SHE SAID: “I’ll go inside the pharmacy with Trey,” Jessica whispered. “He’ll be less suspicious of me.”

Sed nodded. “Yeah, we need to be careful or he’s going to become better at hiding it from us, which will make it harder to help him.”

She touched his face. He really did care deeply about people. She didn’t know why she hadn’t seen it before. Jessica leaned against him, resting her face against his chest and murmured, “You’re a good man.”

    He chuckled. “Nosy, you mean.”

She smiled. “That’s one way to put it. Righteous is another.”

    “Self-righteous?”

She laughed. “That’s not what I meant, but yeah, sometimes.”

“I really don’t know if you’re insulting me or complimenting me.”

HE SAID: Sed grasped his forehead in one hand. What should he do? Maybe Jessica had an idea. He returned to the bedroom and found her dressed and packing a suitcase.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“We’re going to take Trey and help him before he changes his mind.”

    “You heard everything?”

“Yeah, I was listening. Call his father.”

“He doesn’t want his father to know.”

Jessica put her hands on her hips. “Either he calls him, you call him, or I’m calling him. Our only other option is to check him into rehab.”

“I’ll call him,” Trey said behind Sed, “but not here. I need to get away as soon as possible.”

Jessica pushed Sed aside and grabbed Trey in a tight embrace. “I’m proud of you, sweetie. We’re going to get you through this. Okay?”

Trey nodded, clinging to her like a frightened child. “You two make a good team. You’ll have me kicked into shape in no time.”

Team? Sed liked the sound of that.

Their fourth challenge... Learn to communicate. Sed has foot-in-mouth disease and Jessica takes everything he says at face value. How will she ever see past his bungled words and become a mind reader so she can come to understand what’s going on inside his head? And how will Sed ever make sense of someone as complex as the woman he loves?

SHE SAID: Sed started to shove her belongings into the open suitcase on the bed. “No, I’m not listening. You are not chickening out, Jess. You’re going back.”

    “You don’t understand. That isn’t why…”

He slammed her suitcase shut and pressed it into her chest. “Good-bye.”

“I’m not finished talking to you.” She slammed the suitcase down on the floor, her nostrils flaring and eyes narrowing.

“I’m finished talking to you. Get out!”

“Sed… You don’t understand. Will you just listen?” Frustrated, she hit him in the shoulder. “Listen to me!”

HE SAID: He sighed and wiped a hand over his face. If there were a Jessica Chase instruction manual, it would be written backwards in Arabic Pig Latin and twelve thousand pages long with random pages missing. Sometimes he wished she wasn’t so damned complex.

Their fifth challenge... Admit what they knew all along. They love each other. Are meant to be together. They can make their relationship work and overcome any challenge. Together. Eventually.

SHE SAID: “I love you.”

HE SAID: “I love you so much I can’t breathe sometimes.”

This second book in the Sinners on Tour series features lead singer Sedric Lionheart who became a playboy after his fiancee, Jessica, broke his heart. Forced on a summer tour together for two entire months, but stubbornly desperate to stay apart, they find a million steamy reasons why they had that lovin' feeling in the first place.

Sinners’ lead singer, Sed, had his heart shredded when Jessica left him to pursue her dreams,so when she dances her way back into his life, he's not sure he's ready for her brand of pain, or pleasure, again. When she convinces Sed to engage in a benefits with benefits relationship, things seem to be going his way, until one of his fans catches their explicit public display of affection on film and posts it all over the internet. Will Jessica ever trust Sed again? And has Sed become the man of Jessica’s dreams or is he just posing to get what he wants?

I would have to say I had a situation with my friend. We have been best friends for almost a year and I was being stubborn and wouldn't advance our friendship into a relationship. Sometimes him and I are just so stubborn and on two different pages but we make it work in the end.

I have Backstage Pass on my tbr pile and plan on reading it this summer. Thanks Olivia for a great guest post, I was interested the whole time.

Tore- I don't really think I had a choice. It's just something I do. I've been writing for a long time. Now others are reading what I write. Works for me!

Maria- I never base characters on people I know. I'm sure I borrow characteristics of certain people, but I don't base them on anyone in particular. I write mostly on weekends because my day job is a killer and sucks the creative energy out of me. If I could quit my day job, I could get a lot more books written!

I don't really have any mars/venus stories.

Olivia, after you write all of the books for the band members what do you have planned? Are you going to write more books with band member characters?

Yes, I have a few mars vs venus stories. After all, I have been happily married for 31+ years! Although I will say, he has done much better these last 10 years. Our miscommunication has dwindled drastically.

Several years ago, my car (which I no longer have thank goodness) was giving me problems. It would stall out at the most inappropriate times. One day Hubs and I were both leaving to go somewherein separate vehicles; me in the car, Hubs in the truck - where I don't remember. I backed out of the drive before he did. Yep, the POS stalled at the end of the driveway. I laid on the horn to alert Hubs that I had stalled and he needed to stop. You guessed it, he backed right into me - smashed the whole front end in!

When I asked him how come he didn't stop, didn't he see me, or hear the horn blowing?!? His reply, "Oh, I just thought you were saying bye and blowing the horn at me." WTF. Well, the damaged front end did get repaired. Along with the stalling problem that I had been complaining about!

Who needs conversation when you have multiple orgasms? Oh, I like that very, very much!! The various peeks into the novel are delish!

Danielle- More rock stars! Different bands, of course.

elaing8- The only thing I love more than writing is music and musicians, so I finally took that advice "write what you're passionate about". I'm definitely passionate about music. And musicians.

Hi, Olivia! Congrats on your new release!

I haven't really had any Venus/Mars relationships; growing up with many guy friends enabled me to be a bit "Martian". :) Of course, watching my sister go through her Venus/Mars relationships helped me to avoid all that drama, too.

I'm looking forward to Jace's book (because I have a thing for bass players)!

When you've got a husband, it seems like it's a never-ending Mars/Venus story. For example, because I'm always trying to lose weight, I can never actually admit that I'm hungry. Most of my girlfriends are the same, so I assume this is a Venus thing. He gets so frustrated by that. He says "Why don't you just come right out and say that you are hungry?". Instead, he's learned that if I walk by a restaurant and say "Oh wow, that food looks so good", that's code for "I'm hungry and I need to eat".

I just picked up a copy of Backstage Pass and I can't wait to read it. I've heard lots of good reviews of both of your books.

Maria (pronounced Mariah) I blame my mother... April 20, 2011 at 10:28 AM

My hubby and I have been together for 18 + years and will be married for 14 of them next month so yeah we have had many mars/venus moments. It is hard to narrow them down though! The biggest thing with us is he will get so tuned into a TV show that he just will not hear anything else...I am constantly reminding him that he really won't miss anything since the TV now has pause and rewind buttons!

Thanks! mmafsmith(at)gmail(dot)com

Too many Mars/Venus moments to recall! I dated this guy who said, "If you love me, you would do XYZ." I'm sorry, I may love you but I draw the link in cutting toenails!

Olivia, I read Backstage Pass and loved it. I can't wait to read Rock Hard.

I don't have any particular Mars/Venus stories because most of the same communication issues can relate to different relationships in general.
This is an interesting topic and gives me something to think about as I read the book.
