Guest Author & Giveaway: Pamela Clare featuring Breaking Point

Tuesday, May 3

My guest author today is FABULOUS in more ways than one.  First she is an award winning journalist, second she is a best selling novelist, thirdly she is a seductively brilliant self-marketing genius.  The first two you probably were already aware of if you've had the pleasure of reading one of her books, but the third?  Let me tell you why I think she is also a marketing genius.

Last year I asked Musings followers what authors they loved that I hadn't read, but could be missing out on, and Scorpio M commented that she thought I should give Pamela Clare's Romantic Suspense series a try because she thought I would really enjoy them.  I took her recommendation to heart and began buying her books...then, there they sat...languishing in the sadly neglected, and ever-growing gargantuan TBR (yes it has now reached gargantuan proportions).  I knew I wanted to read them...eventually.  When I found the time and got around to them...someday.

I had been following her blog for a while, when she issued a challenge.  A challenge to tempt both new readers and devoted fans to read/re-read her I-Team series to celebrate the upcoming release of Breaking Point...her newest I-Team novel.  I read the first one in an attempt to complete the challenge on time and was ADDICTED thereafter to the point that I read them all back to back, and had major withdrawal when I didn't have another to read.

The wait for the new book in the series has been excruciating because I loved loved loved them ALL and wanted more!  Which is why I couldn't stop talking about them for several weeks :) LOVED.  THEM.  So I am forewarning you now, I have just received my very own sizzling hot copy of Breaking Point, which I will be reading at the very first opportunity, which also means I'll probably be gushing about it...a lot :)

Pamela Clare is my guest today talking about her equally fabulous and irresistible heroes, and why it is so hard to choose just one....because you can't choose just one (there should be a romance law against it).  Read and enjoy!

Of all the questions I’m asked during interviews the most impossible to answer is this one: Who is your favorite I-Team hero?

Some people say, “Oh, that must be like being asked to choose a favorite from among your children.”

To that I say, um, no. My feelings toward my heroes are nothing like my feelings toward my children — or anyone else’s for that matter. I fall head over heels for these men. At the end of each book, I have to let go and move on. My older son, hearing that I was having trouble getting Unlawful Contact off the ground said, “Mom, I think it’s time for you to break up with Julian.”

From the mouths of teenagers…

I’ve tried to decide from among my heroes, tried to find ways to narrow it down, and it just doesn’t work.

There’s Reece from Extreme Exposure, a high school teacher and idealistic state senator who ran for office only to show his students that anyone can make a difference in society. Tall with model good looks and skilled with his hands, he has a cabin in the mountains that he built himself. He cooks, loves kids and isn’t afraid to put his heart — or his life  — on the line for the woman he loves.  In short, he’s the perfect lover.

Tucked in between my first two I-Team novels is “Heaven Can’t Wait,” a contemporary romance novella featuring Will Fraser, former college football star whose dreams of a pro career are smashed when his knee is shattered in one of the last games of his college career. Now a sports reporter, he is head over heels in love with Lissy—and determined to show her how very much he loves her, even if it means keeping his hands off her for until the wedding.

There’s Julian Darcangelo from Hard Evidence. Kidnapped by his own father as a baby and raised in his father’s brothel south of the border, he is fished out of a prison by the FBI while still a teenager, he has sharpened the edges of his rough childhood and turned them into a weapon against men just like his father. Deeply passionate, protective and sexy as sin, he feels tainted by his past and unworthy of the white picket fence, the wife and the children for which he secretly longs.

After growing up in foster homes, Marc Hunter, from Unlawful Contact, tried to make something of his life, joining the army, becoming a Special Forces sniper, and earning a Bronze Star before his world came crashing down around him in a single afternoon. In prison for life, he lures the woman he’s dreamed of since high school to the penitentiary and uses her as a hostage to escape in an attempt to right the injustices of that afternoon and save his younger sister’s life.  He’s a man who would do anything to save the women he loves.

And then there’s Naked Edge’s Gabe Rossiter, a paramedic and park ranger, who has lost himself in a life of adrenaline-charged sex, skiing and rock climbing in an effort to evade his grief and sense of betrayal over a tragedy from his past. But when he meets a woman who helps him feel again, he rediscovers the man he once was. And when asked to make the ultimate sacrifice out of love, he doesn’t hesitate for a moment.

Do you see my problem? Two perfect lovers, three tortured heroes — each willing to do whatever it takes for the women they love — in or out of the bedroom. So where do I go from there? How can I top these strong, sexy men?

The answer just might be Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Zach McBride from Breaking Point. A former Navy SEAL, Zach answered his nation’s call, almost losing his life and earning a Medal of Honor along the way. Haunted by his memories of war, he finds that coming home is harder than he imagines, and so he joins another war, fighting cartel violence along the border.  When he is betrayed by another operative, he endures six days of torture, using his SEAL skills to stay strong. And then…

He hears the cries of an American woman who, like him, has been taken by the cartel. Weak almost to the point of death, he finds the strength to go on — for her sake.  Here’s a glimpse:

Zach hung limply from the manacles, unable even to hold up his head.  His shoulders ached from supporting his dead weight, manacles biting into his bloody wrists.  But none of that could compare to the residual pain of that last electro-shock.  His muscles seized in sharp spasms, his heart slamming erratically in his chest, his body shaking, his mouth filled with the coppery taste of his own blood.

Don’t give in to the pain.  Adjust for it.

He willed himself to relax, slowed his breathing.

Cold water splashed over his chest, making him jerk.  It wasn’t to revive him, he knew, but to make his skin more conductive to electricity.  He waited for the next blast of agony, but instead felt a glass bottle against his lips.  A hand fisted in his hair, tilting his head back, and he swallowed, warm cola sliding down his raw, parched throat.

Electrolytes.  Caffeine.  Calories.

All would help him stay alive.

Then his tormenter spoke to him, as always in Spanish.  “You are dying, cuñado.  And for what?  You are alone now, forgotten, left without even a dog to bark at you.  Tell us who has the cocaine and where we can find them.  Then your torment will end.  There will be no more pain, only sleep.”

Zach fought off a wave of despair.  “¡Vete a la verga!”  Fuck off!

The bastard chuckled, but Zach knew he wasn’t really amused.  They’d tried to break him and had failed.  There’d be a price to pay when Cárdenas got the news.

Creaking hinges.  Footsteps.

And Zach knew she was there.  He could feel her presence, hear her rapid breathing.  Hell, he could even smell her, something sweet in a world of filth.

“Tráela aquí.”  Bring her over here.

What the hell?

Zach’s head came up.  Somehow, he drew himself to his feet, his hands clenched around the chains for support, his heart thudding hard in his chest.  Why had they brought her in here?  Were they going to torture her to get to him?

Over my dead body.

Arguably, the most heroic of my heroes, Zach has made my choice harder. Who’s my favorite? I guess it depends which book I’m writing at the time.

I hope you love them all.

While investigating border violence in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, Denver journalist Natalie Benoit is caught in a bloody ambush and taken captive. Alone in the hands of ruthless killers, she will need every ounce of courage she possesses to survive.

Betrayed by another operative, Deputy U.S. Marshal Zach McBride has endured a week of torture and interrogation at the hands of a bloodthirsty Mexican drug cartel. Ready to give his life if he must, he remains unbroken—until he hears the cries of an American woman.

Although Natalie is only a voice in the darkness of their shared prison, her plight brings renewed strength to Zach's battered body. With her help, he overpowers their captors, and they flee through the desert toward the border, the attraction between them flaring hotter than the Sonoran sun.

But past loss and tragedy leave both of them reluctant to follow their hearts, even when the passion between them reaches its breaking point. Faced with feelings neither expected, they fight to stay ahead of the danger that hunts them as forces more powerful than they can imagine conspire to destroy them both…

Read Ch.1 & Ch. 2, a short excerpt from Ch 3, an additional one....and one more for good measure :) (because really, how could you not want to read the additional ones after reading the first two chapters?)

Congratulations Pamela & Happy Release Day!  To say that I'm excited about getting the chance to finally read Zach's book (even though I've only been waiting about a month) may be the biggest understatement I've made this year :)  I tried to choose my favorite of her heroes...and I couldn't, because I love them all for different reasons.  I would select one, then consider was a vicious cycle of never ending alpha hero that I hope to be able to continue to contemplate with each new hero that she writes :)

If you would like to learn more about Pamela Clare and the AWESOME books that she writes (not that I'm biased or anything) you can find her at her website, her blog (where she features MTM aka Man Titty Monday...a favorite stop for me, for obvious reasons)Facebook (or the I Team Facebook Fan Page), Twitter, her Yahoo Group, as well as her author page at Goodreads. If have to admit that most of these songs are new to me, except for Evanescence's Bring Me to Life (which I love love love!).

Happy Release Day to Pamela. I liked the passage where Natalie selflessly tries to save Joaquin and seeming putting herself in direct danger. I'm on Team Marc, but I can see myself changing it to Team Zach.

Happy release day Pamela! Best of luck with the release! :D

Probably my favorite passage is the one you used in the interview. Because no matter what they had done to him, he was not going to allow them to torture Natalie. As he said "Over my dead body". Strong alpha male there! I have not read any of the books yet (hangs head in shame) but I plan on it in the near future.

Happy Release day!
my favourite extract is:
Zach didn’t realize he was trying to break free of the manacles again until his hands were wet, water from broken blisters mixing with sticky, warm blood.
Who are you fooling, man? You can’t save her. You can’t even save yourself. I like it because even though Zach is hurt he is still trying to save her! My favourite hero has to be Reece, although from reading a bit of Zach's that may soon change!
Pamela i love your i team series and can't wait to read this one. You are such an amazing writer :)

Artemis May 3, 2011 at 6:18 AM

My favorite passage is when they are having breakfast and Natalie is quizzing Zach. The underlying heat is smoldering.

I'm one of those: I have this series on my towering TBR and for whatever reason, just haven't gotten round to it. I will be remedying that shortly.

Although, I must say, I tend toward a tortured alpha. So, it could be Marc, Julian or Zach. Time for me to find out!

Pamela, I highly enjoy your MTM!

Congratulations on your release today!

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And poor Jill got stuck carrying the water by herself.
I had to smile in the middle of this very intense story when I read that. I have read Pamela's historicals but not this series and it looks very good.

Thank you, Booklover, for this amazing blog post. I posted on my blog that it's almost like an I-Team wiki. It brings so many things that are scattered out there together. I really appreciate it.

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes on this exciting day!

Jane, I'll be interested to see if you do switch teams. You'll be sure to let me know, right?

June, I like a man who's that protective, so that's one of my favorite moments out of the excerpts that I posted. I hope you enjoy the stories! If you like alphas, I'm betting Julian, Marc and Gabe, as well as Zach, will be right up your alley.

Elizabeth, thank you so much! I'm so glad you've enjoyed the books. I love that scene, too. I hope you enjoy Zach's and Natalie's story.

Hi, Artemis — Great to see you here. OMG, yes, please, just pick one out of that towering TBR (make sure to wear a helmet) because I don't think you'll regret it. And thank you! Glad you enjoy MTM. :-)

Hi, Maureen — I'm glad that made you smile. I would not like being stuffed in a car trunk. I think one thing that surprises readers about this book is how tough Natalie can be. This is just the beginning of her discovering her own strength. I hope you give the I-Team a try. As for the historicals, I'm working Connor's book now.

Scorpio M. May 3, 2011 at 9:44 AM

I'm here to lend support and tell all those readers out there who haven't given Pamela's books a shot: Do it! You will not regret it. Best romantic-suspense series on the market. Realistic, fast-paced, ORIGINAL, sexy, has it all.

I'm batting 1K with my I-Team recommendations. Thx Booklover for the shout out! :)

I love the I-Team playlists, also. They are the perfect complement.

Pamela, enjoy BP release day. I know you've worked long & hard for this one. You are the best!!!

(No need to enter me in the contest.)

Tore May 3, 2011 at 9:52 AM

My favorite passage is when Zach wont let Natalie be tortured and says over my dead body. Please enter me in contest. I would love to read this series.

Tonya May 3, 2011 at 10:32 AM

First of all, as much as I'd love a signed copy, I'm only on page 3 of the book & don't want to read the excerpts yet. So, let me just say that so far my fave hero is Marc. I fell in love with him in the prologue of UNLAWFUL CONTACT. UC is my favorite I-Team book SO FAR! I tell people if they read only one book in their life, it should be UNLAWFUL CONTACT. If you haven't read the I-Team series, you don't know what you're missing. Read it now! You won't be disappointed! Not to put anyone down but a lot of series I read are basically the same story just different people. Not so with Pamela's books. While reading some series I have to stop & read something else in between b/c I tend to get bored. Not so with Pamela's books. I read them back to back & want more! Her books are amazing. I can't get enough of them. BTW, her historical books are just as good as her RS books!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY, PAMELA! I have no doubt that I will fall in love with Zach just like all the others. Thank you for sharing your talent & writing such amazing books! I look forward to reading more of your books in the future!

Thank you for a great post and Congratulations on the release of Breaking Point. Wow! That is one hot cover. This series sounds so exciting and thrilling, I can't wait to check it out. My favorite excerpt has to be where Natalie is asking Zach questions over coffee. Zach is being evasive. Natalie pushes him over the edge with her personal questions and he kisses her. I still have a smile on my face just thinking about the scene. I look forward to reading their whole story and seeing how it ends. Congrats again on Breaking Point and best wishes.

I have not had the pleasure of reading this book.. or I think any of your others.. but I am running out to make sure I find this book...
My fav passage so far, as I am sure there will be many is this one:

At least you didn’t sleep with her, buddy.

Yeah, well, at least he could feel good about that. It would suck right now to have her taste in his mouth or her scent on his skin, knowing that she’d put him through this. Long ago he’d made it a rule never to get involved with women while on assignment, and despite Gisella’s persistent attempts to get him to break that rule, he’d kept his dick in his pants.

WOW...Good luck and Happy release day

Ren May 3, 2011 at 1:18 PM

Happy release day for Breaking Point, Pamela!! :D I can't wait to read your books, but seems I can't buying anything until end of month, I'll patient :(.

Read excerpt make me more impatient *lol*. My favorite parts, one is the end of chapter 1. That's surprised me o_O!! And the second is the excerpt in your web (when Natalie and Zach kissing), talk about butterfly in my stomach *g*

I'm already read all I-Team books (except the novella) and I love them! My favorite hero is Marc Hunter (and Unlawful Contact is the best book, IMO). The second favorite is Reece (nice pic for Reece!), because he's so perfect, and perfect hero is my kind of hero ;).

Talk about hero, I want to ask to Pamela, how to make a hero? How you decide his characterization or personalities that make reader swooning and drooling? Because I swear all your hero are HOT!! and even I dislike Julian and Gabe in the beginning, I ended up love them *lol*

I hope more readers will read I-Team series, because this series is a keeper! ;)

Hi, Scorpio — Thanks so much for your very sweet words. And thanks for sharing the I-Team series with others. Word of mouth means everything.

I'm having a fantastic release day. I stayed home from work to keep up with all the posts and such. I'm having a blast.

You know those playlists are SO important to my writing. You've always checked them out and commented. If you ever want to suggest music, please feel free!

I can't wait to hear what you think of Zach and Natalie's story. :-)

Hi, Tore — I hope you get a chance to read the series. That moment is such a Zach moment.

Hi, Tonya — You're such a sweetheart! I'm so glad you feel that way about the series. That means a lot to me.

I try very hard not to repeat myself and to focus in each book on coming up with fresh characters. I think the fact that the suspense threads are all based on investigations that were very different is part of why the books feel different.

I hope you're still enjoying BREAKING POINT. And thanks for the good wishes!

Hi, ChrisS — That was a fun scene to write. Sometimes journalists don't quite know when to stop with the questions. We're all very curious people by nature, I think. In that situation, I would say Natalie was rewarded for getting too personal, wouldn't you? LOL!

I can tell you quite honestly that most of the guys I've interviewed are NOT guys I'd want to kiss me.

Pamela Clare May 3, 2011 at 2:17 PM

Hi, Kathleen O — I hope you enjoy the stories. Thanks so much for posting and for the good wishes. I admire a man with self-control and Zach has it in spades. You can't be a Navy SEAL without it.

Hi Ren — I'm glad you enjoyed the excerpts. I know how much you want this book. I hope you can get a hold of a copy soon!

How do I make a hero? RESEARCH! As unromantic as that sounds, that's where I start. I have the heroine already (at least in the I-Team stories) and I have the plot (based at least in part on a topic I've covered as a journalist). So I figure out what kind of role the hero is going to play in that investigation. I find out his profession... And then I research.

For Zach, I spent weeks and weeks watching SEAL training videos and documentaries about SEALs and SEAL missions. I also did a huge amount of research into U.S. Marshals. I met with a former U.S. Marshal and a former chief deputy U.S. Marshal who actually worked where Zach works. I asked 1,000 questions. I watched Marshal documentaries.

I also researched the U.S./Mexico border and border crossings.

That gave me an idea of the situations my hero (Zach in this case) would face and I was able to build from that his own personal history. Then the emotions come in, and there's flesh on his bones. (And it's sexy flesh). And then I have a hero. :-)

Hope that makes sense.

Amy May 3, 2011 at 5:29 PM

Happy release day to Pamela!!

I've read the first four I-Team novels and have been addicted to the series for some time now. Pamela writes some of the sexiest Alpha heroes I have ever read. I have loved each and every one of them! Obviously, it's so hard to choose one as my favorite, but I'll say that Marc was the hero who won me over the earliest in his book out of all the other heroes because he was so sweet to Sophie in the Prologue.

From the excerpt, I really liked the part where Zach suddenly smells Natalie as "something sweet in a world of filth" and then he wants to save her.

Pamela Clare May 3, 2011 at 8:24 PM

Hi, Amy — That prologue is sure popular. I think there's a part of us that remembers being teenagers and having that terrible crush on some perfect boy. We dreamed of "going all the way" with him, but didn't get to. But Sophie did get to experience that fantasy. I think that's one reason it's so popular. Also, her perfect boy turns out to be even more wonderful than she imagined — until years later when...

I'm glad you liked that part the excerpt!

Thanks for posting.

Kaetrin May 4, 2011 at 7:19 AM

Hello - new follower here! *waves*

My brain start fuzzing at the treasure trail disappearing into the pants - when Natalie says "oh if only he'd put on a shirt" I was like wash your mouth out with soap girl!! and then with the kissing, yep my brain totally fritzed.

My favourite hero so far is Gabe from Naked Edge - but I love them all and I think Zach is going to give Gabe a run for his money.

Here's hoping we can get the series on audio soon with a kickass narrator! :)

Pamela Clare May 4, 2011 at 8:29 AM

Hi, Kaetrin — Oh, how I WISH that would happen. I would love to have these books on audiobook. That's something the publisher handles, so letting them know how you feel might help.

If you're a Gabe fan, you're going to enjoy this story. He does some pretty amazing stuff in the book. All the heroes do, but readers keep mentioning what he does.

And, yes, I think Zach will give him a run for his money, for sure!
