Guest Author & Giveaway: Vicki Lewis Thompson featuring Cowboys Like Us

Wednesday, August 10

Some Romance readers have voiced their opinion that they dislike all of the "man-titty" however, I absolutely LOVE them!  I find them to be inspirational as well as a celebration of the human form....ahem, basically they are HAWT Man Candy and I am totally OK with the objectification of book covers :)  I'll have to tell you some day about my book cover revolution I would like to see, in the meantime NYT Bestselling Author Vicki Lewis Thompson is my guest today to share some of her "Cowboy Cover Love" from the Sons of Chance series,  and the newest addition to the series, Cowboys Like Us, which is a special Harlequin Blaze 10th anniversary double edition that also contains Vicki's first Blaze title, Notorious.  Read and Enjoy!

I’m so happy to be here at Seductive Musings!  Many thanks for inviting me to blog today.  I hope you won’t mind, but I want to talk about gorgeous guys, especially like the ones who’ve shown up recently on my covers for the Sons of Chance series for Harlequin Blaze.  I swear some readers are buying the books for the cover art alone!  And I don’t blame them.

The series began last summer, and those first three covers of 2010 were wonderful.  But THIS summer the covers for books four, five, and six blew me away.  I thought it would be fun to analyze these three and talk about why they work so well.  I’ll throw out my thoughts, and you’re free to jump in with yours.

First up is SHOULD’VE BEEN A COWBOY.  I had a poster of this cover as an auction item at Fresh Fiction’s Boas and Tiaras event in Dallas in June, and let me tell you, it was a show-stopper.  Alex, the hero, is inside an old barn.  Notice how the light comes through the slats and lovingly highlights his . . . everything.  The hat pulled low is another good touch, and I like the shirt on, but unbuttoned.  You can almost feel the warmth of his skin and the bristle of his beard.

But THEN we come to the July book, COWBOY UP.  I’m in awe of this cover.  I had suggested this scene as a potential cover image, but I had no idea how they’d stage it.  How does a photographer capture water pouring out of a cowboy hat?  Yet they did it!  The sunset in the background makes the little droplets of water glisten like diamonds as they run down his magnificent chest.  I’m amazed by the photographic artistry that created this cover.  I’m pretty much amazed by the cover model, too.

And finally, after two covers blazing with light, we come to COWBOYS LIKE US, which features a darker, more atmospheric look.  This mood actually fits the book perfectly, because Logan is by far the most troubled of the three cowboys who star in this summer’s stories.  He’s a baseball player whose injuries have taken him out of the game.  Of course he’ll find his inner cowboy with the help of a good woman, but adjusting to a major change in his life isn’t easy.  I like the hat over his eyes and the glimmer of sunlight on his chest.  Okay, I love the glimmer of light on his chest.

I’m hard-pressed to choose a favorite out of these three covers.  My daughter’s partial to the first one, SHOULD’VE BEEN A COWBOY, and I’m amazed by the July book and that water photography.  The third book, though, evokes what I think of as the world of a cowboy – outside in the elements, ready to face whatever Mother Nature throws at him.

Which cover is your favorite, and why?  I’ll give away three books today, and the winners may choose any of the three books.  As I said, they’re worth it for the cover art alone!

Real cowboys aren't born. They're made…

Logan Carswell has just kissed his professional baseball career goodbye. Goodbye dreams, career and future. For now, though, he's working at the Last Chance Ranch and the town saloon, where sexy bartender Caro Davis is definitely taking his mind off his troubles…

Caro's days have been so hectic, she's forgotten all about the finer aspects of life. Like men. And sex. And really smokin'-hot sex with men like Logan. But when their two worlds collide—and boy, do they ever collide—they both realize that once the gear is off, a cowboy is still a cowboy!

Read the beginning, enjoy an additional scene, & for your reading pleasure here's an exclusive excerpt for Musings readers.  Enjoy!

(If you'd rather not use the flipbook you can read the excerpt here)

Congratulations Vicki!  And THANK YOU for sharing those Muse worthy covers!  I would love to paper my walls with posters of those covers ;)  Readers may initially be buying the books for the covers, but it's the characters and stories within that keeps them coming back for more...and more...and more.

If you'd like to learn more about NYT Bestselling Author Vicki Lewis Thompson and the books she writes you can find her at her website  where you'll find Cowboys, Nerds, Witches, Wizards & Werewolves among other things.  Trust me you will at least want to check out ALL of the covers from the Sons of Chance series because they are spectacular when viewed together! Yum...

I like the cover of COWBOYS LIKE US. I like the "feel" of the dark clouds and wide open spaces.

I am more familiar with your Hexed and Nerd books and didn't realize you were doing cowboy books.

Awesome post! I'm going to say that my favorite cover is the one for Should've Been a Cowboy! There's just something about that man and his cowboy hat. I would love to win. Thanks for the opportunity!

I think my favorite is "Cowboys Like Us." I like the way his head is tilted and he looks good in the leather jacket.

I like Should've Been a Cowboy but then Cowboys Like Us looks mighty fine too. Hang, I can't decide between the 2.

Wow. I have never seen covers with so much...artistry! =)
I absolutely love them all, but Cowboys Like Us is my fave. The way his head is turned away yet his body language is all defiant. Perfect lighting in the shot. It evokes a feeling of a dangerous scarred man that you are not totally sure you should be willing to run into even in the daylight.
Thank you for the chance to pick up this drool worthy book, the story line sounds just as drool worthy as the cover is!

I'm partial to COWBOY UP although SHOULD'VE BEEN A COWBOY is extraordinarily yummy.

It amazes me to see how many books of yours I have read although COWBOY UP is the first Western one (unless I can convince eHarlequin to be more helpful so I can finally read THE COLORADO KID ebook *grumble, grumble*). I loved the Nerd ones (although, speaking as a nerd, I didn't find those heroes to be that nerdy - they were too hot!) and the Hex ones.

Carol L. August 10, 2011 at 7:47 AM

Wow, these are some awesome covers Vicki. All three covers would be welcome in my home but I'll go with Should've Been A Cowboy. And why ? Plainly he's gorgeous and the way he looks with his shirt unbuttoned makes me think I want to lock up those barn doors and corner that hottie in one of the stalls. lol lol
I've been in a Cowboy reading mode the last three weeks so this is perfect. Thanks Vicki for the "Drool" you gave us. :)

I love all the covers but if I have to pick one, it would be Cowboy Up. All that water running down that sexy body....:o)

I already have all three of these books in both e-book version and the physical copies too (because I needed to be able to hold and drool over those covers in person.) Don't include me in the drawing since I already have them all, but I just had to comment. The books are gorgeous, but so are the stories. I have LOVED these books!!! smiles...

Anne August 10, 2011 at 10:24 AM

All three covers are great, but I like Cowboys Like Us the best. The sun in the other two, while providing a nice effect, draws my attention away from the cowboys.

Vicki Lewi Thompson August 10, 2011 at 11:08 AM

Good morning, everyone! I wish Tony, the guy at Harlequin who's responsible for all these great covers, could hear your raves! He's done an awesome job. He's about to cast the models for next summer's three books, and boy, would I like to be in Toronto right now. :-)

I'll make sure this post goes through and then be back to see hello to each of you.

Vicki Lewis Thompson August 10, 2011 at 11:12 AM

Okay, looks like I'm in business! Except apparently I can't spell my own name, LOL.

Hi, librarypat! Something tells me you're an outdoorsy kind of person. Me, too.

Carly, my daughter agrees with you. That guy is her type!

Jane, that jacket is awesome. There's something about a leather jacket on a guy that's so sexy!

Vicki Lewis Thompson,  August 10, 2011 at 11:21 AM

You notice *I* didn't pick a favorite, either, Ivy, LOL.

Lexi, this is what I call art. :) Also, I like that these guys all have heads!

Sheree, sorry you're having issues about The Colorado Kid! Hope that gets straightened out soon. Yes, my nerds were hot, but that's because they were actually the Clark Kent/Superman type.

Nikki, I'm all about cover art. I can't paint or draw and even my photos aren't that fantastic, so I'm in awe of great cover art, and grateful!

Carol, what a nice coinkydink that I'm giving away cowboy books and you're on a cowboy book reading streak! Good luck!

Vicki Lewis Thompson,  August 10, 2011 at 11:25 AM

Hi, Tamsyn! I don't know how they photographed that water pouring down and made the drops show up on film, but it's amazing.

Christi, thank you! How generous of you to come on and comment and then leave yourself out of the running. I'm glad you're enjoying the books, because I have 3 more coming at you next summer, LOL.

Great comment, Anne. No, we certainly don't want sunlight distracting us from those gorgeous cowboys. :-)

CrystalGB August 10, 2011 at 2:22 PM

Hi Vicki. My favorite of the covers is Should've Been a Cowboy. They are all great though. Your series sounds awesome. I love cowboys. Thanks for the giveaway.

Estella August 10, 2011 at 4:40 PM

All of the covers are drool worthy.

I like to cover of Cowboy Up. The sunset, the water, it's the end of the day----time for some courtin'!

Leni August 10, 2011 at 6:10 PM

Looking at all of these covers makes me not want to choose one over the other. They all get my attention, but I'm going with Cowboys Like Us. The darkness, outside elements add to it. Makes me wonder if he's about to do something that is going to take a lot of skill and bravery. You've got awesome covers.

I like them all, but I'll choose Should Have Been a Cowboy because it just conveys a rugged, sexy cowboy to me.
I've always enjoyed westerns and I'm looking forward to getting started on this series.

I love the cover for Should Have Been a Cowboy. There is something about a man with a cowboy hate and open shirt that turns me on. I would love to read your books. They sound very good.

Vicki Lewis Thompson,  August 10, 2011 at 7:44 PM

Good afternoon, everyone! We just had a refreshing rain here, which cooled us off a little. Hope you're all surviving on this August day!

Hi, Crystal! I've wanted to do more cowboy stories for awhile, now, and two years ago I got the green light for this series. I'm loving it!

Estella, is that you from the old Soapbox Queens blog? If so, hello again!

Leni, I have to agree that Logan on the Cowboys Like Us cover looks like he's about to do something heroic. And look good doing it, too!

It's been a fun series for me, Barbara, so I hope you enjoy it, too!

Hi, Tore! I know what you mean about the shirt still on, but unbuttoned. Yum!

elaing8 August 10, 2011 at 10:11 PM

OMGosh..I have to pick just one cover. They are all smoking hot..I'll say Cowboy Up.The wet, slick look and the cover.Who doesn't love a half naked man on a cover :D

Hi Vicki! I like all the covers especially since they feature cowboys so prominently and I do like a good cowboy story. My favourite cover is "Cowboys Like Us". I like how the cowboy is front and center but there is also some landscape behind him. I like animals so the horses are appropriate and cute.

I like Cowboys Like Us best. I like the landscape in the back and also the saddle he's holding. Gives a real "Cowboy-feeling"! :) And I like how he's dressed, not just plain bare chested bu with a little somethng on. ;)
Thanks for the interview and giveaway!

Hi Vicki, Love your work! Oh my all three covers look so good - and not just because of the models ;). I love the colors and way they've set them up. Should Have Been a Cowboy I think is my fav cover.

I'd love to win Cowboys Like Us. Athlete turned Cowboy sounds right up my alley :).
