Guest Author & Giveaway: Elisabeth Naughton featuring Tempted

Friday, September 2

I LOVE a damaged hero!  The romances that contain damaged heroes (physically, mentally or even both) remain some of my absolute favorite and memorable romance matter the romance subgenre.  So when I read the description of Elisabeth Naughton's new paranormal romance in her Eternal Guardians series, Tempted, I was immediately intrigued since it features a dark, brooding and damaged hero who finds love.  Sounds like my kind of book ;)

Author Elisabeth Naughton is my guest today to share with us a bit about her new book Tempted, as well as an exclusive excerpt to tempt you even more :)  Read and enjoy!

Welcome to Seductive Musings Elisabeth!  Since this is your first visit to Seductive Musings can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you think makes a romance novel a great love story?  What makes writing romances so compellingly seductive to your muse?

Thanks for having inviting me! I’m thrilled to be here.

I hate talking about myself but I’ll try to give you a little background on me before we move on to talking about the fun stuff (Tempted!)

I currently live in Western Oregon with my husband and three young kids. Before I was an author I taught middle school and absolutely loved spending the day with hormone-challenged preteens. Most people assume I taught Language Arts because I’m now a writer, but that’s not true. I have a Bachelor’s degree in science and a Master’s in Education so I’m sure you can picture it…yes, I was the crazy science teacher who was constantly being warned by her principal “Don’t blow up the school!” It wasn’t until after I took a year’s leave of absence from my teaching position and started writing that I decided to change my career path. And voila, here I am today. (I’m sure my principal was oh so thrilled.)

As for what makes a great romance novel…for me it’s all about the characters. I can read just about anything – sci fi, U.F., sweet and inspirational - so long as the characters are engaging and the emotion is raw. I like a good, deep, emotional read so the more angsty the better. These days, I write what I want to read: characters who live on the edge, suspense that makes your spine tingle and a romance that leaves you breathless.

Your newest story, Tempted, is the third book in your paranormal romance Eternal Guardians series. Can you tell us how many books are planned for this series?  How Marked, Entwined and Tempted are related, and for someone who has not had the pleasure of reading them, can you give us a brief summary about each of these stories? And do they need to be read in order?

While it’s true that Tempted is “officially” the third book in the series, you don’t need to read the books in order to figure out what’s going on. In fact, most of the reviewers who have read Tempted (and loved it) didn’t read the first two books in the series. Of course, if you’re the type of reader who loves to sink their teeth into a series, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the first two books.

The Eternal Guardians are seven warriors descended from the seven greatest heroes in all of Ancient Greece. They defend both the mortal realm and their own world from threats of the Underworld, and specifically, one evil goddess hell-bent on revenge. In Marked, book one, Theron, the leader of the Guardians and a descendent of Heracles, must find the one woman in the human realm who can complete a prophecy that will save his world from annihilation. Of course, that woman turns out to be much more than he expected and he’s left with the impossible decision – to save her life or that of his world.

Book two , Entwined, is Zander’s book. He’s the oldest of the Guardians and can trace his lineage back to Achilles. As the only immortal Guardian, Zander’s lost his will to live, especially since losing his soul mate. But he soon discovers things are not what they seem and that deceptions run deep. Even in a world that’s supposed to be paradise.

And finally…we have Tempted, the third book. This is Demetrius’s book. A descendent of the famed hero, Jason, Demetrius holds a dark and deadly secret that just might destroy them all.

As for how many books are planned in the series, I can’t quite say. I can tell you that so long as readers keep asking for them, I’ll try my best to write them.

For some readers the first sentence of a book is one of the most important moments, maybe even just as important as the last sentence at “The End”.  What is the first sentence from TEMPTED, and what do you hope it conveys about the story to come?

Temptation hung like a thick mist in the club, calling to the desperation seated deep inside him.

Demetrius is a very dark hero and I wanted the first line in his book to reflect that. He’s definitely the most damaged hero I’ve written to date, but he’s also one of my favorites because his character arc is so extreme.

Tell us about your dark, damaged, and brooding warrior hero, Demetrius.  What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine Isadora, fall in love with him?  And can you tell us a little bit about their story in TEMPTED?

Demetrius is definitely an anti-hero. He’s mean, he’s moody, you never know what he’s thinking and at times he’s downright scary. But that’s not the real him. That’s just the façade he uses to keep everyone at arm’s length. Isadora has been afraid of him for years, but when the two are trapped on a deserted island together and Demetrius is forced to protect her, she starts to see through the façade and gets her first glimpse of the real man he is inside.

Demetruis views Isadora as a fragile female in need of protection, yet she proves that she is stronger than anyone gave her credit for.  Is she strong enough to save him, just as much as he save her and what are some of the qualities that attracts him to her and makes her irresistibly tempting?

It’s interesting. In the first two books I had readers emailing me telling me they weren’t sure about Isadora. She’s 200 years old and yet she acts like a child. She lets her father tell her what to do. She’s meek and timid and recoils from the Guardians. Her father is intent on marrying her off to one of the Guardians to cement the monarchy before he dies and she can’t think of a worse horror than being stuck with any one of them (including Demetrius). But she won’t stand up to her father the king, even though little by little through the first two books, she’s growing bolder and more independent. It’s not until Tempted that she discovers who she really is and how important she is in the world. I love Isadora’s arc in Tempted. She goes from being afraid and in need of protection to being confident and strong and the one doing the saving. And in the end, she IS Demetrius’s savior.  One hundred percent. For a guy who doesn’t think he needs anyone, that’s a major turn-on.

What's your favorite scene or moment from TEMPTED, and why? Can you describe it (or provide a short excerpt) for us without giving too much away?

Oh man. My favorite scene comes near the end of the book. Without giving too much away (because it would ruin the story), I can tell you that there is a moment when Isadora is faced with a choice: believing what’s staring her in the face, or believing what she knows in her heart to be true. When she confronts Demetrius and he tells her exactly what she doesn’t want to hear, she stands up to him. It’s the moment when she really comes into who and what she is, and it’s extremely powerful. It’s also the moment when Demetrius finally realizes she’s got his number and he can’t pretend anymore. I love, love, LOVE that scene. It made me cry when I wrote it and thinking of it now still gives me chills.

What are five fun facts about you or this book, that readers would love to know?

Okay, let’s see…
  1. I hate coming up with fun facts about me. I’m boring! (Seriously.)
  2. I have eclectic music tastes. I make “soundtracks” for all my books, which you can find on the sidebars of each book page on my website. I love alternative, rock, pop, even some country thrown in. Currently, I’m listening to a lot of Breaking Benjamin while writing the Eternal Guardians.
  3. When I “see” Demetrius in my head I see a badass picture of Clive Owen. (You can picture whomever you want but that’s what sticks with me.)
  4. My two favorite movies are Lord of the Rings (all three) and Gladiator. My kids are sick of these movies as I watch them all the time.
  5. I don’t do book readings at signings and I can’t stand to be in the room with someone who is reading one of my books. It’s the neurotic writer in me. If I have to be near someone who is reading my work I must have wine. LOTS of wine. (Preferably red.)
Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

Absolutely! Enraptured – book four in the Eternal Guardians series releases in April 2012. I don’t want to give away too much about this book but readers who enjoy Tempted will be able to figure out who the hero in book four is pretty easily. I’m hard at work on book five right now, tentatively titled Unchained, and loving it. Another dark and tortured hero but a totally different story from TEMPTED. I think readers are going to love this one.

If you could ask readers a question what would it be?

I’m always curious what readers want to read about next. I’m currently plotting out a new series so as an author I’m wondering…what paranormal beings/creatures would you like to read more about?

Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

All your hard work is about to pay off.

I think that’s fitting for not just me but a whole bunch of people!

Thanks so much for having me here today! I love hearing from readers so drop me a note through the contact form on my website. And if you read and enjoy Tempted, please let me and everyone else know!

DEMETRIUS—He’s the hulking, brooding warrior even his fellow Guardians avoid. Too dark. Too damaged. And given his heritage, he knows it’s best to keep everyone at arm’s length.

Isadora is missing. The words pound through his head like a frantic drumbeat. For her own protection, Demetrius did all he could to avoid the fragile princess, his soul mate. And now she’s gone—kidnapped. To get her back, he’ll have to go to the black place in his soul he’s always shunned.

As daemons ravage the human realm and his loyalty to the Guardians is put to the ultimate test, Demetrius realizes that Isadora is stronger than anyone thought.

And finally letting her into his heart may be the only way to save them both.

I'll definitely be checking this one out. Tortured heroes are my favorites. As for what I'd like to read next, I never get tired of shifters, and I love books with some element of necromancy in them (I'm not sure why - I'm not usually fascinated with dead things LOL). Really, I'll read just about any paranormal story as long as it doesn't center around zombies.

Hi, Elisabeth! Congrats on your new release! I've been looking forward to Isadora's story!

Is this where I request giant- insect shifters? LOL! Why not a non-warm-blooded shifter? (aside from sharks and dragons and I'm not sure about the latter's blood type)

A new author for me, one I must check out! I love the sound of this book, great excerpt!!!
Hmmm, I have always been a big fan of the fae. There is so much history about (or supposedly about) them and where they first showed up and what they did.

Thanks for a chance to win this book! Here's hoping I get to cross it off my TBR list soon!

I would actually like to see an endangered animal shifter. I think that would be unusual.
I love Clive Owen, too, I think he would be great in this.

I love vampires a lot, but I can't get enough of dragon shifters. I guess it's because they're something so fantastical, I mean there could really be vampires, right? :D

I love paranormals, all the various characters: Vampires, shifters, witches, fae, demons, angels, gods/goddesses. I will never tire of reading about them. Right now I can't get enough demons.

I like a little of everything. This is a series unlike what I have read before except maybe the Percy Jackson books. Other than more stories like this series, I think shifters are interesting.

Thank you so much for the two excerpts. I really enjoyed them. Now I really am curious about this world and these characters. I'll be looking for these books.

Hi Elisabeth,

Haven't gotten to read any of this series yet, but will have to change that soon :). I enjoy tortured heroes as well - this one sounds like a great read.

I'd like to see some more less common shifters and djinn maybe.
