Guest Author & Giveaway: Leigh Michaels featuring The Wedding Affair

Tuesday, September 20

House parties in Historical Romance are notorious for a scandal....or two...or in the case of Leigh Michael's new book, The Wedding Affair....three!  Author Leigh Michaels is my special guest today to share with us a bit about The Wedding Affair.  Read and enjoy!

One of the things I love best about writing historical romances is the way that society’s restrictions forced choices which today’s young women would find ludicrous. Marrying a stranger because her parents arranged it? Being traded off in marriage for property or money? Marrying a man she doesn’t love in order to have a home and food on the table?

Those would be horrible options in real life, but they’re lots of fun in fiction.

In The Wedding Affair, the three heroines—Olivia, Kate and Penelope—are all facing desperate problems, and that makes them willing to look at desperate solutions. When the three are invited to the wedding of the Duke of Somervale’s sister, each sees the gathering as an opportunity to salvage her life.

Olivia is widowed and has a daughter to support, which means that even the few jobs which were open to women of the time aren’t available to her. No one would hire a governess or a housekeeper who had a small child in tow. When the Duke of Somervale, who’s being pursued by his sister’s bridesmaids, propositions Olivia, telling her that if she’ll pretend he’s courting her, he’ll make the charade worth her while… Olivia has to consider the offer in order to provide a future for her daughter. And if they have a passionate affair on the side, who’s to know?

Kate is the vicar’s daughter, which means that her father’s death has left her homeless as well as without a source of income. There are no jobs in the village and no one who can even recommend her to employers. Surely someone at the wedding will offer her a job as secretary, companion, or governess, for Kate is willing to do anything for security… until her past returns to haunt her in the person of adventurer Andrew Carlisle. Andrew is just as exciting as he was when Kate was seventeen – but he’s still not offering anything that resembles stability. In fact, he wants Kate to toss everything aside and come with him on his next New World adventure. But opposites attract—flirting and fighting with Andrew makes Kate wonder whether security is really what she wants.

Penelope is the daughter of a prosperous brewer and has plenty of money, but she’s caught in a loveless marriage of convenience with the Earl of Townsend. He married her only for her wealth, and the fact that she’s anything but aristocratic has kept their marriage as cold as the Arctic. The Townsends barely speak to each other, but a week in the country with a wedding to attend might just thaw the ice and turn their marriage into something bearable. Penelope is determined to do anything it takes— including seducing her husband, if only she can figure out how to reach him.

None of these women is looking for love, even Penelope hopes only to achieve a tolerable marriage, not a happy one. Still, even when a loveless marriage seems to be the best option, not one of these feisty women is willing to settle—and in the end, they all find far more than they hoped for when they embark on The Wedding Affair.

The Duke of Somervale's sister is getting married in the wedding of year -- but the wedding guests are in the mood for affairs, not vows!

The Duke needs the help of beautiful, stubborn Olivia Reyne to fight off the debutantes who have taken over his country estate. Olivia's willing to help -- at a price which will secure the future for her small daughter.

Penny Townsend sees the wedding as her last chance to salvage her arranged marriage and turn it into something more than a matter of convenience.

And vicar's daughter Kate Blakely needs a job -- and fast -- before she gives in to the tempting presence of her first love!

I'm definitely looking forward to reading The Wedding Affair. I love reading books with more then one romance going on. I think Olivia and Kate have the most dire circumstances but I'll go with Olivia because she has a young daughter to take care of and I also think with a Duke involved makes it sweeter. :)GFC follower under Lucky47

Me too, Olivia's story is the one I am very curious to see how this unfolds for many possibilities!
I havent read many books with multiple romances going on, quite a talent to bring more than one story line together! Sounds like a great read, and a beautiful cover! Thanks for the chance to check out this new author for me!

After reading Just One Season in London recently, I am eager to read more of Michael's novels--perhaps this is just that chance? :D

It's so hard to pick one character from this book, all three of the women sound like they have the opportuity for a lovely story...but, I am a bit partial to Olivia. Maybe it's due to the "pretend you are to be my fiancee" type of scenario, which we know will no doubt end up being the truth, that pulls me more towards her.

I'm already a follower.

And I am going to post a little something on my blog (http://tbqspersonalbookpalace.blogspot) to let others know the contest is going on. :D

Thanks you Leigh for the wonderful oppportunity to read all three books in this series.

Congrats on the release Leigh. It sounds like it is going to be an absolutely wonderful read. Al three heroine's stories appeal to me and I'm eager to see how they all connect. If having to pick however, I guess I'd choose Olivia. I am single mom and can relate in that regard. LOL no ravishing Duke's for me though unfortunately.

Hi, all -- and thank you for stopping by! I'm intrigued that everyone so far has been most drawn to Olivia's story.

I love MOC and EOC stories -- the first romance novel I remember reading (back in the Dark Ages) was a marriage of convenience story... and here I am, still fascinated by them.

I am so pleased to be able to share this story!

Can't wait to read The Wedding Affair.

Penelope appeals to me because she is trying to make her marriage work.

Love the covers to all of the books in this series - they're on my wishlist.

I'm really torn as to which lady I'm most intrigued by but I finally settled on Penelope because she's in a difficult postition...she knows what she wants and she's probably used to getting what she wants- thanks to her father's money- but she hasn't got a clue as to how to go about getting what she wants which is something she should already have- her husband's love and attention.
The fact she even wants to make it more than just a marriage of convenience is special in itself.

All three of the heroines are appealing but I'd choose Penny Townsend. She appeals to me because I enjoy seeing a couple thrown together in an arranged marriage find something in common and end up falling in love.

I would have to go with the answer that seems to be the majority, Olivia. I am drawn to her because she is having to worry about her daughter, not just herself. However, all 3 of the ladies interest me greatly. Kate because I love 2nd chance stories and Penny because I love when arraged marriages become love matches. All 3 sound really good.

I've had my eye on Just One Season in London since it came out. Now I'm very interested in The Wedding Affair also. I like it when there is more than one romance included. I think the one that most appeals to me is Penny because I really enjoy Regencies where there are class differences between the main characters and I like the marriage of convenience storyline. Best wishes on all of the books.

I would have to go with Kate. What does she have to loose? Grab hold of that guy and don't let go!

Ms. Michaels I have to applaud you. Penning one story is hard enough, but knitting three stories into one, BRAVO! Can't wait to read about your heroines and their desperate situations.

All three heroines appeal to me, but I think Penelope appeals because she is trying to make her marriage more than it seems it will ever be. All three women are trapped in circumstances beyond their control and fighting to make the best of it. Olivia not only has her own welfare but that of her daughter to consider. Kate appeals to my sense of adventure.

Leigh, I love the way you have blended these three women's plights into a single story. It gives the book added depth and interest. I have read some of your contemporaries, but not the historicals. An oversight since historicals are my favorite. THE WEDDING AFFAIR sounds like a book I will really enjoy.

Thanks for the great post! It was really nice to "meet" Leigh. She is a new author to me and I'm always eager to find new voices!

I'd have to say Penelope b/c it's harder to fix an already existing relationship than to develop a new one.

Kudos on your new release and fingers crossed that I can read it :)

sounds like an interesting concept & book -- 3 romances entwined in one book. as to which heroine sounds most interesting to me is hard as they all do, but I think Olivia just pulls ahead of the others.

If I had to choose it would be Kate w/ Olivia a close 2nd. This sounds like a great read & I like that the 3 all tie together...keeps things hopping & interesting.

Katie appeals to me the most. I have always loved second chance stories and I think Katie deserves her chance at love. Who better to show her this than someone who has known her for a long time?

For similar reasons, Olivia's story also interests me. I am rooting for her happiness as well. Leigh, you have created some pretty worthy heroines whose journeys I would love to read about.

I think Penny appeals to me most because she is standing up for herself to salvage her arranged marriage.
