One More Incentive...This Time for Readers

Thursday, March 31

I've blogged a lot the last couple of days about Operation Auction, and the items that Seductive Musings donated, which end on Ebay tonight.  One item that I offered was 12 months of advertising at Seductive Musings.  As a reader you may think this item would be of no use to you, even if it is for a benefit, why would you want to bid on this?  Here's one idea of how you, as a reader, may utilize the 12 months of advertising at Seductive Musings:
  • The winning bidder has the option to gift an ad space each month, so you could not only benefit Fatin and her family, but you could also gift 1 month of ad space to your favorite author/aspiring author/debut author each month for twelve months!  Authors usually have very limited promotional budgets, so many would love to receive a gift of FREE ad space.
And since I believe that no good deed should go unrewarded, if the winning bidder is a Reader and a follower of Seductive Musings I'll gift you with your choice of a few books that I have on hand, one of which is a brand new copy of The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton.  It's a win for Operation Auction, a win for your favorite authors, and a win for you.  Win, Win, Win, Bid, Bid, Bid!  The auction ends in approximately 10 hrs (around 11:59 pm PDT).

p.s. and if you'd like I would more than welcome any re-Tweets or Facebook wall postings to help spread the word

Let's Sweeten the Deal Shall We?

The auction for 12 months of Ad space at Seductive Musings is currently a little over $50, but I'd like it to earn as much as possible for Fatin and her family so I thought I might offer a bit of an incentive....

So how about this,  EVERY bid earns you an entry into a 2nd chance drawing to win 3 months of FREE ad space at Seductive Musings. That's right, you can win 3 months of ad space just by placing a bid.  How easy is that!  Feel free to bid if you have a product you think Musings readers will enjoy, another blog or website,  publisher, or are an author.  I'll randomly select one bid and then post the winning bid amount  here on the blog after the auction has ended.  The auction ends in less than 24 hours so  bid, bid, bid!

Even if this auction isn't really something you're be interested in I would greatly appreciate anyone reading the blog to Tweet about this, Post on your Facebook wall, or even on your blog or website, to increase the exposure as much as possible and hopefully increase the bids.  The Outlander auction earned $189 for Operation Auction and I would love for the Musings Ad auction to do the same!

Review: Highland Heat by Mary Wine

Wednesday, March 30

Title:  Highland Heat*
Author: Mary Wine
Series:  Highland Trilogy #3
Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Format: Mass market paperback, digital e-book
Date/Year:  March 2011
Reviewed by:  Booklover1335

*This book was provided to me by the publisher for review

Summary from the publisher:

Ruined, Betrayed and Banished…

As brave as she is impulsive, Deirdre Chattan’s tendency to follow her heart and not her head has finally tarnished her reputation beyond repair. But when powerful Highland Laird Quinton Cameron finds her, he doesn’t care about her past—it’s her future he’s about to change.

But It’s Never Too Late for Redemption…
From the moment Quinton sets eyes on Deirdre Chattan, rational thought vanishes. For in her eyes he sees a fiery spirit that matches his own, and he’ll be damned if he’ll let such a wild Scottish rose wither under the weight of a nun’s habit…

With nothing to lose, Deirdre and Quinton band together to protect king and country. But what they accomplish alone is nothing compared to what they can build with their passion for each other…

My Musings:

Highland Heat is the third book in Mary Wine’s Highland Trilogy and features the love story of Deirdre Chattan whom we meet in the first book of this series, To Conquer a Highlander.

Our heroine, Deirdre, is a naturally passionate and feisty woman…a strong woman, proud of her Highland heritage, who succumbed to the deceitful seduction of a man who promised her marriage, but her villainous lover’s  real intentions were only to use her as a tool of revenge against his rival and enemy in To Conquer a Highlander.   In Highland Heat we meet Deirdre again, struggling to accept her life and her lack of choices.  She is disgraced, and bears the shame of her actions as well as the deceit of the man she thought she loved with dignity and pride.  She strives daily to accept her life as it now is, with no hope for the life she once dreamed of; love, marriage, family…all lost to her because of her mistake of loving and trusting the wrong person.   We find her living in a nunnery, her dowry has been given to the church, but she is denied the option of taking vows…not that this is what she necessarily wants, but it’s the lack of options, of having very few choices in the direction her life will take that she regrets more than anything…that is until the Queen of Scotland promises her an alluring alternative.  If she is willing to risk her life by leaving the safety of the convent and become a decoy to lure the Queen’s pursuers away from her true destination, Deirdre could be rewarded with a position in the Queen‘s household.  Adventure, with the hope of restoring some of her lost honor both for herself and her family…it’s a tempting offer that Deirdre can’t refuse.

Quinton Cameron is a young Laird who has been betrayed in love, just as Deirdre has, when his fiancée wed a man with more power and wealth than he had, and now sees no need to wed.  But that doesn’t stop him from enticing Deirdre to his bed.  After capturing her in her ruse as a decoy, he does what he can to incorporate her into his bed, his life and his clan.  Even going so far as “gifting” her with the official title of Mistress to the Laird.  Deirdre however, doesn’t see this as an honor, but one more stain on her already tarnished name, despite their undeniable and passionate attraction.  Quinton doesn’t believe he can risk giving her more than he already has, and Deirdre doesn’t believe that she can happily live without the love of the man she loves, nor can she accept being a mistress and not a wife.

Deirdre Chattan is the most interesting of all of the heroines in Ms. Wine’s Highland trilogy because of the situations she finds herself in.  Betrayed by the man she loved, having to accept the consequences of those actions, and trying to rebuild her life when she had very few options left to her.  Because of Deirdre’s passionate nature, and Quinton using her passion against her to gain her affections, Highland Heat definitely brings the heat!  However, while there were numerous steamy love scenes I felt some of the emotion behind them was missing.  Deirdre’s attraction to her hero was undeniable, but her reasons for loving him were never quite clear…especially since he asked her to sacrifice so much, with little care to what it would cost her and any children they might have had.

Overall the story had all of the elements that I love from historical romances set in the Scottish Highlands during this time period.  It had great suspense, some pretty great villains, chemistry between the hero and heroine…so why didn’t I love it more than I did?  Because I didn’t really get a good feel for the emotions behind the characters…the guilt, the betrayals, the love….all of these emotions played very big and pivotal parts in the choices both the hero and the heroine made.  For instance, there was one point in the book where Quinton accuses Deirdre of trying to trap him into marriage.   The reader knows that his reaction is based on his experiences with his ex-fiancée, but there is little to base his accusations on, therefore you conclude that his response is more emotionally charged, rather than supported by evidence.   Despite knowing of his being betrayed, the reader doesn’t get to fully appreciate his emotions surrounding the event, and as a result you can’t understand his conclusions, his resistance to loving Deirdre…basically how he feels about all of it outside of his actions.  More clearly described emotions from both the hero and the heroine would have made this good romance, into a great romance, at least in my opinion.

Despite these thoughts, I felt that Highland Heat was an enjoyable read, and the best book  in her Highlander Trilogy...with a great heroine, and a hero that is worthy of being called a Highlander.  And even though it is the final book in this series, I don’t think that it is necessary to have read the other two books in order to fully appreciate this story.

Groupon + Ebay= Great Way to Save & Give Back for Operation Auction

Tuesday, March 29

I wasn't going to post anything else today, but then I ran across something timely that I thought you might find some benefit in.  When reading through my emails tonight I ran across a new Groupon discount for Ebay.  The deal is this, you buy a Groupon Gift Certificate for Ebay for $7 and it's worth $15 towards a purchase on the Ebay site.  Hey $8 is $8 especially when you are trying to outbid someone else for an item you covet at the Operation Auction Ebay Store!

I've used Groupon before without a hitch (remember my awesome online Barnes and Noble shopping trip where I ordered over $50 of books for $16?) If you'd like to take advantage of this deal I would act soon, especially if you'd like to use the discount code at checkout after the end of Operation Auction to pay for your treasures, because it usually takes them 24 hours or so to send you your discount code.  Please read all the fine print at the Groupon site.  Enjoy the rest of your night and feel free to share with your friends :)

Operation Auction Update

So it looks as if the final batch of tempting items are available to bid on at the Operation Auction Ebay Store.

Seductive Musings has the following items up for bid, and as mentioned yesterday, if a Musings follower is the winner of one of the auctions I will include extra goodies :)  The winner can email me after the auction and I will let you know what I have available and you can choose what you want.   The higher the bid, the more goodies I will throw in.

  • 12 months of Ad space @ Seductive Musings.   Unfortunately the item title on says "Seductive Musings Ad" which doesn't really indicate that it is for 12 months of ad space with lots of flexibility for the winner.
  • UK hardcover of  Desperate Duchesses by Eloisa James, SIGNED by the author
  • My very last two copies of the limited edition FREE Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.  I don't have any more after this, so if you'd like have this one this is your last chance.

Review: Saddled and Spurred by Lorelei James

Author: Lorelei James
Series:  Blacktop Cowboys #2
Genre: Contemporary Erotic Romance
Publisher:  NAL/Penguin
Format(s): Trade paperback, digital e-book
Date/Year:  March 1, 2011
Reviewed by:  DD

*This book was purchased by the reviewer for her own reading pleasure

Summary from the publisher:

This beauty is no greenhorn-and she's about to rope the man of her dreams.

Cattleman Bran Turner is left shorthanded during busy calving season when a bull tramples his hired hand. Rural Wyoming isn't exactly a hotbed of qualified candidates, and the only applicant for the position is the pampered town beauty, Harper Masterson. The curvy cowgirl gets under Bran's skin at every turn, but with no other options, he reluctantly hires her.

When sexual sparks ignite, down-on-her-luck Harper enjoys convincing Bran that not only is she capable of pulling calves, feeding livestock, and handling backbreaking ranch chores, but she doesn't mind getting down and dirty, either. Harper also discovers the hot-bodied cowboy isn't all work and no horseplay...and he's got more than a few tricks up his sleeve.

Bran will learn quickly that Harper is no country mouse-and that she might just have what it takes to stick around for the long haul.

My Musings:

I’ve lived in the South my whole life. I can identify with ‘Country’. I use this term to describe various trumped up foundations of life in a small town, such as Cowboy Boots, Cowboy Hats, hubcap sized Belt Buckles on Wrangler wearing ‘honest to goodness’ bull riders, excessive use of annoying endearments (sugar, honey, darlin’…you get the picture). And of course, let’s not forget the town matriarch. She owns the only beauty shop in town, smokes three packs of Virginia Slims a day, wears huge plastic earrings, and takes young mistreated/misguided ladies under her wing. These aww shucks fables can take place in Wyoming, Texas, Oklahoma, or any town that is just a dot on the map.

What I am trying to say is that it is a rare experience when an Author can take these played out elements and weave them into a story that can be enjoyed and not thrown in the “Cannot Finish” pile never to be touched again because the book is so cheesy it stinks from 12 feet away. Can Lorelei James pull this off? Yes Ma’am. She rocks. The woman can take clichés and make the cool kids like them.

This story takes place in the town of Muddy Gap, Wyoming. Sound quaint? Not really. No B & B’s for this little place. Former local beauty queen Harper Masterson (love the Name) has a drunken skank for a mother that ran off and left her to look out for her younger sister, Bailey, who is a Senior in high school. The oldest sister, Liberty, is enlisted in the Army and currently stationed in Afghanistan. Momma Masterson ran off with some local putz, pissed off everyone in town, leaving Harper strapped for friends and employment choices. She holds down two jobs to support herself and Bailey, who is supposedly going to college in the Fall, and Harper plans to move to wherever Bailey goes to school to supply her younger sister with monetary and moral support. When she gets axed at the local tanning salon because of slow business, Harper is understandably distraught. Like a ray of light her best friend Celia calls in Harper’s time of woe, and gets an earful of sobs. But Celia has a devious plan for her BFF…….

Bran Turner is a rangy local cowboy who owns a modest ranch outside of town that he inherited from his Grandparents. He runs it himself along with his old and grumpy right hand, Les.  When Poor Les has a little mishap with a bull, rendering him useless for a few months, Harper shows up at Bran’s door, ready to make some cash, mend fences, and start birthin’ some bovine babies.

We all know that chaos ensues at this point.

Bran is Proud. Bran is Cocky. Bran is kinda Sweet. Bran has a serious case of foot in mouth disease. Seriously, this guy has no filter, but you love him anyway. He says whatever he thinks and is a little rough around the edges. Unlike most Heroes in our beloved romance novels, Bran has a little insecurity about his appeal to women-especially this woman. He is in constant awe of Harper’s beauty and more or less sees a glowing aura around her at all times. I have to say this is kind of a new aspect for a hero and frankly very refreshing. Usually, it is conveyed that the main Male character of a story is very confident about his looks, and of course his sexual prowess...it hints at vulnerability if he is not. I feel like most Authors shy away from this, thinking that a man cannot possibly be “The Perfect Alpha Male” if he is at all insecure or shows any vulnerability before the big “fall” in the book. I disagree. Ms. James let him be a little unsure of himself, and therefore more relateable. I’m not saying he is a wimpy limp noodle or, gasp…Beta. He is just more humanized.

There was a lot of give and take between Harper and Bran. He wasn’t weak and neither was she. They both wanted to be worthy of each other, and had genuine love and affection, not just lust. Their banter was hilarious and is current with the times. Since Lorelei James herself lives in the Dakotas, you get the feeling she is pulling from some of her personal experience. I love that she can walk the walk and talk the talk. We learn all about ranching alongside Harper because of this. I always feel the best books are the ones were you feel like you’re living inside the story, and Saddled and Spurred delivers that to the reader in spades.

And we can’t talk about a Lorelei James book without talking about the Luuuuv scenes.  In my opinion, this book and its predecessor, Corralled, are not as erotic as the Rough Riders seriesSaddled and Spurred is very, very, hot, but the love scenes didn’t feel like as much of the focus of the book as some of James’ previous novels. To me, the scenes could possibly be a little disappointing to readers familiar with this Author’s other series because I would describe them as just a little kinky, definitely not vanilla, but maybe more like butter pecan…..however the love scenes are still great and consistent with James’ style. I personally felt nothing was missing. She has all the Wild West infusion and the periphery of characters that we will come to know and love just as much as her beloved Rough Riders. I can’t WAIT for the next book in the series, Wrangled and Tangled (Nov 1, 2011).

Ratings:
  • Overall:  4.75 Stars~Very close to a perfect romance novel. Humor, emotion, multi-faceted characters and engaging love scenes. If you have a hard copy, It’s a keeper. This is a feel good story, with fainting goats and a strange dream about bovine mating………..No hankies, just smiles. :)
  • Sensuality level:  4.00~Super hot relatively speaking, but we’ve seen WAYYYY hotter from Lorelei James. I wouldn’t classify this one as “erotica”.

A Not So Sweet Thing Happened Over the Weekend

Originally author Jill Shalvis was supposed to be my guest today to celebrate the second book in her Lucky Harbor series, The Sweetest Thing.  However, over the weekend Jill had to have her appendix out and is in the hospital.  The good news is is that it appears she is going to be OK, the bad news is is that I've had to postpone her guest appearance and the giveaway that went along with it.

I'll let you know when the new date is, or it may just show up as a sweet surprise one day soon  :)

Get Well Soon Jill!

Monday's Muse: Dark Angel

Sorry, but the image containing the Monday's Muse has been removed from this blog so as not to violate any copyright issues.  Thanks for your understanding!

This last week I began reading Pamela Clare's I-Team series novels (currently Unlawful Contact) for the very first time, in preparation for her new release in May (Breaking Point), and the thing that strikes me most is how much I love her Alpha heroes...and the stories.  Especially the stories because I think they are the perfect blend of romance and suspense (approx 50/50).  I'm also loving the whole investigative reporter heroine thing going on in the series, because the women are smart and work hard to make the world a better place...one article at a time.

But  since it's Monday, let's get back to that whole yummy Alpha hero thing Clare does so well.  I just finished reading Tessa and Julien's story in Hard Evidence, and when the heroine asks him about his heritage he says that he's half Italian, at which point she asks him which half,  and he cheekily replies "from the waist down ".  Yes siree, our hero Julien is an Italian Stallion :)  Tessa is one lucky lady!  Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.  Anyways, our Muse this week is how I envision Julien Darcangelo aka 'Dark Angel' .  I could be holed up with him in protective custody for a very, very long time and not get bored :) How about you?

As you can tell, I'm really really enjoying this series and can't believe I haven't read them before.  My big big thanks to the Musings readers who suggested I should give her books a try.  I now have a new to me author to add to my auto buy/auto read list :)

This week at Seductive Musings:
  • Tuesday:  author Jill Shalvis will be my guest for her newest Lucky Harbor novel, The Sweetest Thing and some special extras :)
  • Wednesday:  Review for Lorelei James' Saddled and Spurred by new Seductive Reviewer "DD" (see below), and one or two reviews by yours truly :)
  • Thursday:  Maybe a new Thursday's Thoughts, but more than likely a review
  • Friday:  Debut author Lecia Cornwall will be here to celebrate the release of her new historical romance Secrets of a Proper Countess
Also of interest:
  • As I mentioned above there is a new Seductive Reviewer in town!  She will be writing under the reviewer name "DD" and I think you are going to enjoy reading her reviews just as much as I do.  I think they are witty and insightful at the same time...basically they are so much fun to read that I can't wait to share them with you.  Her first review will appear on the blog on Wednesday with her review for Saddled and Spurred.  Here's a little bit about her:
Hello!! I am DD. I am only child, not 30 nor am I 40, am deathly afraid of wrinkles, and spend way too much money on Moisturizer. I love cats, but I am married, so I cannot be called a cat lady. I will not disclose the amount of time I would spend sleeping if I could. I do have a real job, and unfortunately it really hinders the time I can spend on reading and naps. I also roll my eyes frequently and frown on a professional work environment.

5 words to describe yourself:  Moody, Bossy, Emotional, Nosey, and Sweet ♥ And a hermit. And wordy.

  • And if you didn't already know, and missed my post on Sunday, Operation Auction for Fatin on Ebay is up and ready for your bids.
    • I have a widget in the left sidebar that will show you what the current bids for some of the available items are, and you can view all of the items by visiting the Operation Auction Ebay Store.
    • The auction will take place with new items added every three days or so.  Bid now and Bid often (except for the items I would like to win...then you can save your money for something else equally tempting)
    • The banner at the top of the blog is now directed to the Ebay store, however if you'd like to visit the Operation Auction blog for more information, or to donate click here.
    • Seductive Musings (me) donated a few items for the auction, including a few collectible books.  Since the shipping is free for the items, money earned from the Amazon purchases that you, my lovely Musings readers, have made will be used to ship the items to the winning bidders...so inadvertently you have played a part in the effort to support Fatin and her family during this terrible time and for that I want to thank you all for your generosity when making purchases at Amazon using links found on the blog and at the Seductive Musings Amazon store.  From the bottom of my heart, Thank you!
  • I have a new Tempting Trailer this week. It is for Rhyannon Byrd's new paranormal romance that releases this week, Rush of Darkness (I enjoyed this one).
Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors will new releases this week, especially Jenelle Denison, Larissa Ione, Gaelen Foley, Lisa Marie Rice, Jill Shalvis, Erica Ridley, Katharine Ashe, Olivia Cunning, and last, but certainly not least, Lecia Cornwall.  There's a lot of great new releases this week!  Here are just a few of the others that might tempt you:

Have a great Monday my friends!
