Friday Fun: One for the Money Trailer

Friday, September 30

Happy Friday! Yeah, I'm really really glad it's Friday. It's been another busy stressful week so I thought I would share some fun with you while I have a few minutes.

Yesterday, I saw the movie trailer for Janet Evanovich's One for the Money, the first book in the Stephanie Plum series.  And while I no longer read new books in the series (too much same 'ol same 'ol), this book remains one of my favorite of Ms. Evanovich's....but I have to say I think they totally mis-cast the role of Ranger.  Stephanie, Grandma, and even Morelli I can live with....but the Ranger they chose is so not....manly enough in my opinion.  Too many dimples and smiles, at least from the look of the trailer.   Have a look see, then tell me what you think.

Well, what do you think?  I would have loved to see The Rock, or Jason Momoa as Ranger....someone less cute and more intense, yet undeniably sexy.  I'll still probably want to see it when it comes out, but now....I guess I'm just a little less excited than I wanted to be about the movie.  Thoughts about books made into movies?  Like them, don't like them?

Summary from the publisher:

LOVE AT FIRST BITE

Nightclub dancer Chloe Lamoureaux just met the man of her dreams:  Aidan Raines is charming, considerate, rich, and hot.  Of course, he’s a little mysterious about his age.  And his favorite drink.  And he’s not much for sunlight.  But he’s asked her to marry him, and she’s ready to do it. Sure, she has a few secrets too—but they’ll have plenty of time to work things out while they’re living happily ever after.  Right?

Her identical twin sister, Chuck, isn’t so sure.  Maybe reporting for the local Bigfoot-sighting tabloid doesn’t make her an expert, but to Chuck, Aidan and his brother Sebastian look like honest-to-Dracula vampires.  Especially Sebastian:  beguiling, seductive, and just a hint of dangerous.  Maybe she wouldn’t mind him taking a little taste.  But with Chloe’s life in the balance, she has to know—do they want hot love or hot blood?  Or maybe…a little of both?

My Musings:

This book is actually two novels in one with interacting characters.  The first, Vampnapped, focuses on Charlotte “Chuck” Lamoreaux and Sebastian Raines.  The second, Married . . . with Fangs” centers around Chuck’s identical twin sister Chloe and Sebastian’s brother Aidan.  I told you they were interwoven.

Chuck is the down to earth sister, an investigative reporter for the Sin City Tattler, while her sister is a show girl in a Las Vegas casino.  Chuck is determined to write an important expose which will get her a job with a reputable newspaper.  Unfortunately, she decides that Sebastian is the perfect subject of her expose because, after all, she believes he is a vampire.

Sebastian also happens to be the owner of the casino where Chloe works.  Chuck convinces her sister to let her impersonate Chloe so she can follow Sebastian.  Sebastian thinks Chloe is a gold digger who is out to trick his brother Aidan into marriage. So he kidnaps Chuck thinking she is Chloe.

Confused yet?

Meanwhile, Chloe really is a gold digger, but only for the best reasons.  She has a three-years-old son and she wants to make sure he has financial security.  Chloe and Aidan have been dating for several weeks and the sex is magnificent.  They haven’t talked a lot because, hey, the SEX is magnificent!

Aidan does want to marry Chloe and while Chuck is being kidnapped, they run off to a Las Vegas wedding chapel and get married.  Unfortunately, Aidan neglects to tell Chloe he is a vampire until after the wedding.  There is that little matter of him biting her on their wedding night.  Of course, she hasn’t told him she’s a mother either.

I absolutely loved this book.  I knew I was going to before I had read ten pages.  The characters are likable and the dialogue is funny.  The author can make the most insane situations seem reasonable.

Although the books tell separate stories, the last chapter brings them all together again.  The ending is satisfying with no loose ends making you wonder if there is going to be a sequel.

I have not read any of Heidi Betts’ books before, but I certainly will in the future.  I was delighted to find that she has an extensive backlist.  I imagine she will be added to my autobuy list and I am very particular about who goes on that list.

Again, a wonderful, enjoyable book which I highly recommend to anyone wanting a fun read.

FOLLOWUP:  After stating that the book does not need a sequel, I found out that the author has written an epilogue titled One Last Bite and is free at places like Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Smashwords.  Although it does not really add anything to the story, I enjoyed visiting Chuck and Sebastian and Chloe and Aidan one more time.

Actually, if the author was going to write an epilogue, I would have preferred it to address the women’s decision on whether or not to stay human.  That is the only area where I felt the reader was left hanging.

Either way, it does not matter.  Read the sequel.  It is just as enjoyable as the book.

Guest Author & Giveaway: Ashley March featuring Romancing the Countess

    Wednesday, September 28

Infidelity in romance novels is like the third rail, and is hardly ever the basis of a romance story which must contain a HEA.  But it happens, and it is devastating.  So how do you love after that kind of betrayal whether it is with the person that was unfaithful, or with someone new.  Interesting questions that I think make for a potentially powerful romance no matter the time period.

Author Ashley March has dared to write a love story involving not one, but two characters who are attempting to survive infidelity and find their HEA.  She is here today to share an interview with her heroine from Romancing the Countess, Leah George who has the courage to not only to love, but to pursue her own happiness.  Read and enjoy!

An Interview with Leah George: The Middle

Thanks so much to Seductive Musings for hosting me today as I celebrate my new Victorian romance, ROMANCING THE COUNTESS! I’m going to post a new interview with my heroine soon, but first I’d like to give you a little background about the book and what’s going on at the time of this interview.

ROMANCING THE COUNTESS is about an Earl and his best friend’s wife who are drawn together after their spouses—who were having an affair—die in a carriage accident. While Sebastian Madinger, the Earl of Wriothesly, didn’t know of his wife’s infidelity, Leah George had been carrying the secret of her husband’s betrayal for the past year. She is ready to move on with her life and pursue happiness instead of propriety—something she’s never done before. She decides to host a house party. Unfortunately, Sebastian believes the scandal this could cause could incite rumors about the affair and hurt his son, so he goes to the house party to try to intervene.

ASHLEY: I spoke with Sebastian last week, and he seemed surprised at the way the house party turned out. Apparently it’s not as scandalous as he thought it would be. *smiles* This was very cleverly done, Leah. How long did it take you to plan how you would organize the events so it wouldn’t seem as scandalous?

LEAH: smiling back: Yes, he did seem surprised, didn’t he? It’s good to keep him a little off-balance sometimes, I think. I believe I started dreaming about what I could do when I spent time here after Ian’s funeral. It was so quiet and peaceful, and while I needed that time to myself, I also became tired of the loneliness that’s been suffocating me for so long. It seemed like the perfect place to move on, and a fitting way to do it—a punctuation between my life with Ian and my life after him.

ASHLEY: I know Sebastian was prepared for the worst, and that he thought he would have to watch you closely. Have you gotten along since he’s come, or are you constantly at each other’s throats? Does he interfere a lot with your plans for the house party?

LEAH: The first night he came I thought I was going to kill him. He acted like such an insufferable bastard! And the next day, too, to tell the truth. But in a way I understood—I wasn’t exactly the nicest person after I found out about the affair, either. And eventually, he became…much nicer.

ASHLEYraising eyebrow: Nicer, hmm? Would you like to explain a bit more?

LEAH: Well…let’s just say he’s made himself quite likable. *rushes on* Not that I like him overmuch, just… we’re closer to friends now than we were before. Not friends, exactly, but…something closer than acquaintances.

ASHLEY: I see…and is this why you two kissed?

LEAH: stiffening: I didn’t expect him to do that. And I don’t think I’d like to talk about it now, thank you very much.

ASHLEY: Hmm. A sensitive subject, I see. But we’ll move on for the last question. The house party is quickly coming to a close. I know you have something unexpected in store for everyone, something that might finally cause quite a scandal. Why are so willing to see your reputation ruined, and what are your plans afterward?

LEAH, a small, secretive smile turning her lips: It’s not precisely that I want to ruin myself. It’s not that at all. It’s that I’ve finally reached the point in my life—after living with my mother and obeying her for so long, after keeping the burden of Ian’s affair—where my reputation simply doesn’t matter as much as being free to pursue my own happiness. And sometimes, happiness means doing something simply because I want to. I know there will be consequences—I’m certainly not na├»ve in that regard—but I’m no longer the weak woman who’s afraid of her own independence. This is my life, and it’s time for me to do as I wish, even if the future isn’t clear beyond the new few days. Now that I know who I am, I know I can make it through whatever happens.

To read my other interviews with Leah and my interviews with Sebastian, make sure to keep up with my ROMANCING THE COUNTESS Book Tour (details at www.ashleymarch.com).

But for now, I’d love to know how you’ve expressed your independence in the past, even if it was something that didn’t seem to make a lot of sense to everyone else. Have you ever quit a steady job, traveled to a new country, did something completely unexpected?

One random commenter will be chosen to win a copy of my newest book, ROMANCING THE COUNTESS (open internationally)! Also, find out how to win the ROMANCING THE COUNTESS Book Tour Grand Prize of 50+ romance novels by visiting www.ashleymarch.com!

Sebastian Madinger, the Earl of Wriothesly, thought he'd married the perfect woman-until a fatal accident revealed her betrayal with his best friend. After their deaths, Sebastian is determined to avoid a scandal for the sake of his son. But his best friend's widow is just as determined to cast her mourning veil aside by hosting a party that will surely destroy both their reputations and expose all of his carefully kept secrets...

Leah George has carried the painful knowledge of her husband's affair for almost a year. All she wants now is to enjoy her independence and make a new life for herself-even if that means being ostracized by the Society whose rules she was raised to obey. Now that the rumors are flying, there's only one thing left for Sebastian to do: silence the scandal by enticing the improper widow into becoming a proper wife. But when it comes to matters of the heart, neither Sebastian nor Leah is prepared for the passion they discover in each other's arms....

Guest Author & Giveaway: Carrie Lofty featuring Flawless

    Monday, September 26

I love history...maybe it's one of the reasons why I love historical romances so much, but it's definitely a very good reason why I am so drawn to my guest author's stories.  Author Carrie Lofty is my guest today to share a bit about being a romance risk taker, and her new historical romance Flawless.  Read and enjoy!

Welcome to Seductive Musings, Carrie! For you, what makes a romance novel a great love story, and what makes writing historical romances so compellingly seductive to your muse?

I grew up fascinated by history, starting with topics such as the Lincoln assassination, the Pony Express, Old West gunfighters (the subject of my master’s thesis), and World War II. My dad had a lot to do with that appreciation. We played those ancient things called board games—Risk and Heir to the Empire, which was about the conquest of Roman Europe! But I was by no means a military historian. I was always interested in the personal stories behind the facts, and when I hit my teens years, I was pretty much sunk. A hopeless romantic! I found love connections everywhere, and when they weren’t there in the stark facts of history books, I made them up in my mind. History + romance = my life ever since.

You are considered a romance risk taker...for instance, setting your stories in locales other than the ballrooms and parlors of Regency England.  What other things do you think makes your stories different and more venturesome?

I don’t think I’m afraid of the history, if that makes sense. It’s not window-dressing for me. It can’t be, really. I’ve spent too many years taking the historical detail seriously, delving into the circumstances that made people behave as they did. So I don’t flinch from tackling difficult topics such as opium addiction, warfare, and unpleasant aspects of the 19th century push toward industrialization.

Some readers enjoy a rosier picture, more like a fairy tale, which I completely, utterly understand. It can be hard enough to live real life without messes from the past! I enjoy seeing that there was adversity—that not everything was rosy, with conflicts generated by propriety alone. I love it when two people find one another and make a love match in spite of the occasional unpleasantness of life. To me it makes the happy ending all the more precious.

Your newest novel, FLAWLESS, is the first book in your new Victorian series revolving around the Christie family. Can you tell us a little bit about the books in this series, how many there might be, and how they are all connected?

Right now the series is tentatively planned as four books and one novella. Natural industry changes may affect that, but two books are “in the can” so to speak. In the series, the four Christies siblings—born to three different mothers—have gathered for the reading of their father’s will. But rather than bequeathing riches, the successful industrialist has left each of his children a challenge: make a failing business successful within two years to receive a hefty million-dollar bonus, or be disinherited. Each sibling deals with the emotional aspects of this challenge very differently, depending on their status within the family and their relationship with Sir William.

So book one, FLAWLESS, centers around Vivienne and her estranged husband as they make work together—very grudgingly—to make a diamond brokerage profitable. STARLIGHT, which follows big brother Alex to Glasgow, will be released in June 2012. The remaining two books would follow the younger twins, Gareth and Gwyneth, to their exotic destinations. A tie-in e-novella that looks at Sir William Christie’s scandalous love match is also slated for May 2012.

Most authors have a synopsis, outline or idea of what the story they are about to write will be. However, sometimes during the writing process your “Muse” might speak to you and lead you in a different or unplanned direction.  What surprised or changed the most from your original intent for FLAWLESS?

Originally, I thought diamonds = diamond mine. Only with further research did I realize how impossible that would be. Two untutored aristocrats could hardly jump into diamond mining and make a legitimate go of it. Plus there was, quite simply, too many deplorable conditions and the potential to really set readers’ stomachs on edge. It was not romance fodder. The switch to a diamond brokerage kept them more firmly in town, among Society expats, where balls and high tea were still possibilities. I wanted to add that little veneer of glamor to what was otherwise a frontier town.

Huh. I don’t know if that was actually my muse so much as plain ole’ history. But that makes sense for me!

If you had an opportunity to provide only a two or three sentence "teaser" quote from FLAWLESS, to grab the attention of potential readers and give them a glimpse and feeling of what the story is about what would it be?

Miles’ grin returned, that reckless expression so out of place in polite society—but so startlingly at home on the Cape Town docks. “I’m all yours, my lady…for a price.”

Tender skin chafed beneath her elbow-length gloves, and the cleft between her breasts flared with heat. Better than anyone, she understood that apparent courtesies from her husband would be met with a reckoning. The gleam in his dark eyes told Viv that the last thing he would demand of her was money.

Tell us about your hero, Miles Durham, Viscount Bancroft.  What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine Lady Vivienne, fall in love with your unrepentant rogue despite being estranged from their arranged marriage? And can you tell us a little bit about their story in FLAWLESS?

Oh, Miles is a stinker! He’s utterly incorrigible. An idle, half-drunk gambler while in London—which makes Viv so reluctant to make herself vulnerable to him—he is utterly transformed by the wild challenge of Cape Colony. He gets into a fistfight, saves a maid from a burning carriage, skillfully uses his political contacts, and just…becomes Viv’s hero. Strong, protective, hard-working, open. Trustworthy.

But through it all he retains a sardonic wit and an eye for pushing her sensual boundaries. They find a beautiful compromise between the needs of a respectable social face and the secrets they can keep behind closed doors. Lots of passionate secrets! He has been, by far, one of my favorite heroes to write.

What's your favorite scene or moment from FLAWLESS, and why? Can you describe it for us without giving too much away?

There is a moment on their way to the mining town, Kimberley, when Miles makes this turn toward the man he’ll become. The “eyes to the horizon” pioneer spirit from a viscount of all people just appealed to me on so many tasty levels. It’s Miles in a nutshell:

The first class passengers watched Miles with obvious curiosity. Although he should’ve taken part in that show, cultivating the relationships that would aid in making Viv’s brokerage a success, he didn’t feel like relinquishing his anonymity just yet. Once he returned to Kimberley, he would become Lord Bancroft again. For now he was just a man in the desert holding a whip.

What are five fun facts about FLAWLESS that readers would love to know?

I don’t know about readers loving them, but these are the facts I came up with!
    1. FLAWLESS always began in the library. The will reading scene has been there from the very, very beginning. But the original first chapter took place on a steamer where Viv and Miles were stuck together for the transatlantic crossing. Fellow historical romance author Courtney Milan gave me invaluable advice: start in Cape Colony. If you’re going to set a book in South Africa, don’t pull any punches! Get the reader there as soon as possible, and show them what sort of book this will be.
    2. I always had a particular actor in mind when writing Miles. I won’t say here who that was, because I know it colors readers’ impressions. But anyone who follows me on Twitter or Facebook will know. (You can too if you ask me there!)
    3. I began writing FLAWLESS in the February 2009. I finished it later that year, and sold it in April 2010. Just a little insight into how long this process can take!
    4. Vivienne’s mother’s surname comes from a French Canadian dancer named Nico Archambault—anyone else watch “So You Think You Can Dance Canada”? But now that I think about it, I don’t think that made it into the final draft!
    5. A huge portion of the book was eventually altered, then scrapped altogether. It had to do with Miles being caught in a mine collapse and slowly recovering his faculties. Eventually I decided that if Miles was going to change his personality and reform for Viv, he needed to do it voluntarily, not because of an injury and near-death experience!

Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

My alter-ego, Ellen Connor—the pen name I share with Ann Aguirre—is smack in the midst of releasing the “Dark Age Dawning” trilogy of hot-n-dirty paranormal shifter apocalyptic romances. That’s a mouthful! NIGHTFALL came out in June, MIDNIGHT in early September, and DAYBREAK still to come in December.

In cool news for Carrie Lofty (which actually is my real name!), I just sold a World War II historical romance to Pocket, currently titled WRAP YOUR TROUBLES IN DREAMS. In it, a female British civilian pilot who’s already lost one man to the war reluctantly falls for a US Army paratrooper medic on the verge of D-Day. It’s a genuine historical romance, as opposed to other great WWII titles that tend toward literary or women’s fiction. I’m excited to see how romance readers will respond to Joe and Lulu! Look for it in late 2012.

If you could ask readers a question, or have them finish a sentence what would it be?

I’m currently in a Barnes & Noble, surrounded by all of their adorable coffee mug paraphernalia. This puts me in mind of how I recently broke my favorite coffee mug, which had a Rosie the Riveter “Yes We Can!” logo. So tell me, if you could design your ideal coffee (or, as a nod to my English husband, tea) mug/cup, what would it look like? Size? Color? Pattern? Pics? Cute sayings? Go crazy!

Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

The love of your life will always adore you.

Sir William Christie, ruthless tycoon and notorious ladies’ man, is dead. Now his four grown children have gathered for the reading of his will. What lies in store for stepsiblings Vivienne, Alexander, and twins Gareth and Gwyneth? Stunning challenges that will test their fortitude across a royal empire . . . and lead them to the marvelously passionate adventures of their lives.

Lady Vivienne Bancroft fled England for New York, hoping to shed the confines of her arranged marriage to unrepentant rogue Miles Durham, Viscount Bancroft—though she never forgot the fiery desire he unleashed with his slightest touch. And when the gambling man arrives on her doorstep for a little sensual revenge for her desertion, he is met with Vivienne’s dilemma: She must earn her father’s inheritance by profitably running a diamond business worth millions in colonial South Africa. Swept together in an exotic undertaking filled with heated passion and hungry temptation, will Vivienne and Miles discover that the marriage vows they once made are the greatest snare—or the most treasured reward?

Monday's Muse: Dedicated to Courtney Milan & Unclaimed

Sorry, but the image containing the Monday's Muse has been removed from this blog so as not to violate any copyright issues.  Thanks for your understanding!

Sunday was a day of rest and relaxation for me.  And I needed it BADLY.  I needed some me time, where I didn't have to think of anyone else's needs but my own.  I spent that time reading Courtney Milan's Unclaimed.  All I can say is AMAZING, and Beautiful!  I've enjoyed all of Courtney's books, but this one...was so much more than I expected.  I still can't wait to read Smite Turner's story, and I adored Ash, but Mark is something special.   Which is why I picked this week's Muse.  To me this week's Muse embodies many of Mark's characteristics, handsome, charming, with a devilish grin...hard to believe he's the embodiment of chastity isn't it?  But don't let his virtue fool you, he is all Man and he has good reasons for believing in what he does.  In one scene of Unclaimed the heroine describes her view of Mark's masculine beauty:
"Men sometimes talked as if curves were something that only a woman possessed.  But his body was a construction of subtler curves:  the gentle swell of his forearm, racing down to the blunt tips of his fingers.  The ripple of his abdomen.  The arc where his torso met pelvis.  His body seemed the pinnacle of masculine artistry."
All I can say is, Amen to that!  Which is why this week's Muse is dedicated to Courtney Milan, her hero Mark Turner, and his story in Unclaimed.  Love.  Love, love love.

Many of my favorite books this year have been historical romances, and Unclaimed will be making it's way into my Favorite's list for 2011.  It may take me a few days to start reading again after this book because any book I read after it will unfortunately not compare well and I hate to do that to a book.  Courtney Milan  has become my 21st century equivalent to Jane Austen...meaning that I think her books are smart, witty, ensconced in characters that are captivating, with stories that have that same poignancy and timelessness that Jane Austen is adored for.  Some may say that there is very little new in Historical Romance, obviously they've not been reading Ms. Milan's work because her voice is unlike any other that I've been reading. Needless to say I think the Turners would make a most excellent Masterpiece Theater series (in case anyone reading this has influence in that direction).  Love.

On a more personal note, I hope things this week will return more to normal on the blog so that I can try and fulfill the commitments that I've made.  If you are an author that has submitted a book for review, please know that I haven't forgotten.  If you've sent me an email and I haven't responded yet, please know that I will.

    This week at Seductive Musings:
    • Monday: an interview with Historical Romance author Carrie Lofty about the first book in her new Christie family series, Flawless.
    • Tuesday:  Romance Author Ashley March will be my guest to share a bit about her new historical romance, Romancing the Countess.
    • Wednesday-Friday:  Reviews, review, reviews, reviews :)
    • Tempting Trailer: this week it is for Madeline Hunter's Dangerous in Diamonds.  I've not read this series, or for that matter I don't know that I've read this author...but after watching this video...oh yeah, I definitely want to check this book out (regardless of the average reviews):

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors will new releases this week, especially Musings authors Maya Banks, Courtney Milan, Victorica Dahl, Carrie Lofty, Chloe Harris, Shannon McKenna, Grace Burrowes, Eileen Dreyer & Mari Carr!

    Giveaway: Forever Texas!

    Wednesday, September 21

Texas has been in the news a lot recently, mostly due to the fires reeking massive destruction and devastation throughout the state.  So, it's kind of nice to have something else to associate with the Texas...where everything's bigger & better....which is hopefully true for two new love stories set in Texas, Don't Mess with Texas and Heartstrings and Diamond Rings.

15 Things you’ll learn from Don’t Mess With Texas that might surprise you

    1. Never, ever feed a dog broccoli.
    2. You might be surprised how the weight of a dead body in the trunk of your car can go unnoticed.
    3. Don’t ever joke about killing your ex . . . in front of witnesses.
    4. In the right situation, vomiting on someone can endear them to you.
    5. When a good-looking detective steals your underwear, he may not be a pervert; he could just be looking for blood splatter evidence.
    6. Some men think hospital gowns are sexy, especially when a breeze comes by and a detective already stole your underwear.
    7. When your grandmother is getting more action than you are, something’s not right with that picture.
    8. Bed bugs are nasty little creatures but they can come in handy when trying to get someone to fall back in love with you.
    9. In the right set of circumstances, morphine can be an aphrodisiac.
    10. The consumption of five cupcakes when your heart is hurting is not always a bad thing.
    11. The way a couple shares an ice cream cone tell the viewing public if they’re sharing bodily fluids.
    12. Nothing can bring all the unresolved issues to the surface in a romance more than finding a naked woman in your boyfriend’s bedroom.
    13. The journey to fall in love isn’t all sweetness and light; it can also have its darker moments where you hurt like hell but it’s still a journey that makes life worth living.
    14. Love can make you laugh so hard you pee in your pants, but it can also make you feel like as though a pit bull just used your heart as a chew toy.
    15. Things really are hotter in Texas.

Nikki Hunt thought her night couldn't get worse when her no-good, cheating ex ditched her at dinner, sticking her with the bill. Then she found his body stuffed in the trunk of her car and lost her two-hundred-dollar meal all over his three-thousand-dollar suit. Now not only is Nikki nearly broke, she's a murder suspect.

Former cop turned PI, Dallas O'Connor knows what it's like to be unjustly accused. But one look at the sexy-though skittish-suspect tells him she couldn't hurt anyone. The lead detective, Dallas's own brother, has the wrong woman and Dallas hopes a little late-night "undercover" work will help him prove it . . .

HE'S THE MAN OF HER DREAMS

In a world full of frogs, Alison Carter is determined to find her prince. Maybe her dating past is more Titanic than Love Boat, but she's seen enough happy marriages to know that true love is possible. No matter what, she won't give up on happily-ever-after. If she can't find Mr. Right, she'll simply hire someone who can.

SHE JUST DOESN'T KNOW IT YET

When Brandon Scott inherits a successful matchmaking business, he thinks his prayers have been answered. Set up a few lonely ladies, collect the fee, how hard can it be? No one needs to know he's not really a professional matchmaker-especially not his first client, the beautiful, spirited Alison. Soon he's falling for her-and her dreams of kids and carpools. But Alison is getting close to figuring out his secret, and if she learns he's deceived her too, she'll walk right out the door, taking Brandon's heart with her.

Guest Author & Giveaway: Leigh Michaels featuring The Wedding Affair

    Tuesday, September 20

House parties in Historical Romance are notorious for a scandal....or two...or in the case of Leigh Michael's new book, The Wedding Affair....three!  Author Leigh Michaels is my special guest today to share with us a bit about The Wedding Affair.  Read and enjoy!

One of the things I love best about writing historical romances is the way that society’s restrictions forced choices which today’s young women would find ludicrous. Marrying a stranger because her parents arranged it? Being traded off in marriage for property or money? Marrying a man she doesn’t love in order to have a home and food on the table?

Those would be horrible options in real life, but they’re lots of fun in fiction.

In The Wedding Affair, the three heroines—Olivia, Kate and Penelope—are all facing desperate problems, and that makes them willing to look at desperate solutions. When the three are invited to the wedding of the Duke of Somervale’s sister, each sees the gathering as an opportunity to salvage her life.

Olivia is widowed and has a daughter to support, which means that even the few jobs which were open to women of the time aren’t available to her. No one would hire a governess or a housekeeper who had a small child in tow. When the Duke of Somervale, who’s being pursued by his sister’s bridesmaids, propositions Olivia, telling her that if she’ll pretend he’s courting her, he’ll make the charade worth her while… Olivia has to consider the offer in order to provide a future for her daughter. And if they have a passionate affair on the side, who’s to know?

Kate is the vicar’s daughter, which means that her father’s death has left her homeless as well as without a source of income. There are no jobs in the village and no one who can even recommend her to employers. Surely someone at the wedding will offer her a job as secretary, companion, or governess, for Kate is willing to do anything for security… until her past returns to haunt her in the person of adventurer Andrew Carlisle. Andrew is just as exciting as he was when Kate was seventeen – but he’s still not offering anything that resembles stability. In fact, he wants Kate to toss everything aside and come with him on his next New World adventure. But opposites attract—flirting and fighting with Andrew makes Kate wonder whether security is really what she wants.

Penelope is the daughter of a prosperous brewer and has plenty of money, but she’s caught in a loveless marriage of convenience with the Earl of Townsend. He married her only for her wealth, and the fact that she’s anything but aristocratic has kept their marriage as cold as the Arctic. The Townsends barely speak to each other, but a week in the country with a wedding to attend might just thaw the ice and turn their marriage into something bearable. Penelope is determined to do anything it takes— including seducing her husband, if only she can figure out how to reach him.

None of these women is looking for love, even Penelope hopes only to achieve a tolerable marriage, not a happy one. Still, even when a loveless marriage seems to be the best option, not one of these feisty women is willing to settle—and in the end, they all find far more than they hoped for when they embark on The Wedding Affair.

The Duke of Somervale's sister is getting married in the wedding of year -- but the wedding guests are in the mood for affairs, not vows!

The Duke needs the help of beautiful, stubborn Olivia Reyne to fight off the debutantes who have taken over his country estate. Olivia's willing to help -- at a price which will secure the future for her small daughter.

Penny Townsend sees the wedding as her last chance to salvage her arranged marriage and turn it into something more than a matter of convenience.

And vicar's daughter Kate Blakely needs a job -- and fast -- before she gives in to the tempting presence of her first love!

Congratulations Leigh & thank you for being my guest today!  I don't know about you but I love that their are three interconnected stories in one book. It's one of the things that I like most about her Sourcebooks titles.  To learn more about author Leigh Michaels and the romances she writes you can find her at her website www.leighmichaels.com, on Facebook and on Twitter.

    Monday's Muse

    Monday, September 19

Sorry, but the image containing the Monday's Muse has been removed from this blog so as not to violate any copyright issues.  Thanks for your understanding!

Taking my inspiration from Betty White (in case you missed Betty's YouTube video from last week please go enjoy it), and because my own car is in dire need of being washed, I thought this week we could have our own "You missed a spot" Muse :)  Though I think Betty's might have been a tad bit better looking.  If you could choose your own "missed a spot" Muse who would he be?  Feel free to leave links in the comments for our mutual enjoyment ;)

    This week at Seductive Musings:
    • Since I'm such a blogging loser....I'm not even going to try and list all of the reviews that should be posted this week..let's just go with...a lot!  I'll try and post them throughout the week, but at this point I'm not even going to try and guesstimate what I will have time for.
    • Tuesday:  Historical Romance author Leigh Michaels will be my guest to share with us her new book The Wedding Affair (psst...this has a seriously good giveaway)
    • Wednesday:  I will have the Forever Romance's Forever Texas! giveaway
    • Tempting Trailer:  This week our Tempting Trailer is for Cat Johnson's new digital release Hooked published by Samhain.  I've read this author before and enjoyed her work.  While not as good as Lorelei James (at least IMO), it's a good fix if you are looking for a hawt Cowboy romance.

    Also of Interest:
    • got nothin'  if you know of a blog event, celebration or release party you'd like to share please feel free to add it in the comments!

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors will new releases this week, especially Musings author Courtney Milan (I have some serious love for this author and I've been waiting for this one for what seems like forever!).

Review: The Wedding Affair by Leigh Michaels

    Thursday, September 15

    Title:  The Wedding Affair*
    Author: Leigh Michaels
    Series:  N/A
    Genre: Historical Romance (Regency)
    Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
    Format: Paperback & ebooks
    Date/Year:  September, 2011
    Reviewed by: ElaineReads

*This book was provided to the reviewer by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

    Summary from the publisher:

    My Musings:

Leigh Michaels is a new author to me although she has published over eighty books.  I don’t know how I have missed her all this time.  After reading The Wedding Affair, I will certainly be looking into her backlist.

This book actually focuses on three separate romances.  I originally thought they would be treated as separate stories in an anthology.  However, there is a single storyline with the three relationships interwoven together.

The first couple introduced, and to me the primary one, are Lady Olivia Reyne and Simon, the Duke of Somervale.  Olivia is a widow with a young daughter.  Her husband left her pretty much penniless and her landlord is trying to coerce her into becoming his mistress.

The wedding in the title refers to Simon’s younger sister’s marriage.  Their mother has invited numerous eligible young ladies in hopes of finding a bride for Simon as well.  Simon makes an arrangement with Olivia to act as his potential bride in order to ward off the debutantes.  This arrangement also includes acting as his mistress.

Olivia’s friend and houseguest, Kate Blakely, is the daughter of the late village vicar.  The duchess asks her to help with chaperoning and entertaining the young ladies at the manor house.  To help distract the ladies, Simon has asked a number of his male friends to join the party.  One of these friends, Andrew Carlisle, just happens to be the young man who Kate fell in love with at seventeen.  Unfortunately, Andrew does not have a family income either and Kate knows she must support herself.

The final couple are Charles and Penelope, the Earl and Countess of Townsend.  Although they have been married for three months, the marriage has never been consummated.  Penelope’s father is a commoner who owns a series of breweries and ale houses.  He is very wealthy and arranged a marriage with the Earl in order to buy a title for his daughter and future grandchildren.  The Earl is determined to thwart his plans by never fathering any children.

Within the first chapter, this book had me hooked and I ended up reading it in just one day.  The sex scenes are not numerous, but they are very will handled.  While explicit, the scenes are very vanilla.  Each couple is true to each other and there are no indications of any infidelity.

All in all, this is an excellent book.  The author does a wonderful job of weaving the stories together while maintaining the separate romances.  I felt like I was reading three books in one.  It was an outstanding introduction to a wonderful author.

Gotta Love Betty White...& other useful news

    Wednesday, September 14

First, I want to apologize for not posting the reviews I've promised the last few weeks in a timely manner. I do have a very good reason, but I've still made promises not only to you, my blog readers, but also to authors and publishers who were kind enough to send me their books for review.  It bothers me that I've gotten so behind.

We've been a household of health issues lately. My Dad has needed some extra help, then just last week my Mom had major back surgery that she is slowly recovering from. They sent her home from the hospital (earlier than I think they should have) so I've had to shuffle my schedule around and take care of her since all that she can really do for the next 1 1/2 weeks is lay down. It's exhausting...but it's my family which I would do anything for.

So there it is. Not really an excuse, but a reason. It also means that in months to come my schedule of guest authors and such might be pretty sparse since I've not had the time to send out invitations.  I'm going to try and work on reviews today, but in the meantime I give you Betty White who I think is fabulous anyways, but I now love even more :)  LOL.

    Monday's Muse

    Monday, September 12

This week's Muse is a little different than the norm.  I was at the library this past week and I was browsing through the new releases, which they have enticingly displayed and stopped in my tracks when I saw this cover!

It seems like I usually feature the front side (abs and such) of our Muses, but this cover could change that for me.  I'm not really sure who the cover model is (Sheree do you know?)  but he has a most delicious backside...and back :)  This cover is even more striking in person than it is here.  I was like, "Ohhhhh..."  I've never read a Johanna Lindsey (of Fabio cover fame), but I almost took this one home even though I didn't have time to read it just so I could admire the cover :)  Lovely!

    This week at Seductive Musings:
    • Monday-Saturday:  Review...and more reviews.  I am woefully behind.  I don't know how much time I will have to blog this week, but what time I can find will be spent posting the reviews I've promised.
    • Tempting Trailer: This week's trailer is for one of my most anticipated reads of the year.  I'm talking about Elizabeth Hoyt's upcoming historical romance Scandalous Desires.  While I think the video is cute, I wonder at the tone of it.  Ever since reading the first book in the Maiden Lane series, this heroine has seemed the most intriguing to me...but I didn't really think the book would have a humorous tone to it.  It's kind of confusing to me...doesn't mean I still can't wait to read the book though :)  What did you think of the video?  If you've read the series so far, am I wrong about what to expect from Silence's story?
      Also of Interest:
      • Vivian Arend's Wolfie World Tour continues this week.  She'll have a blog stop each day as well as guests on her own website blog with lots of book giveaways and general wolfie goodness.  More info on the blog tour can also been seen in the banner to the right.  It's release week so there should be tons of stuff going on!

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors will new releases this week, especially Musings authors Opal Carew,  & Vivian Arend.  Congrats ladies!
