Guest Author & Giveaway: Katie Reus featuring Alpha Instinct

Friday, February 3

There are many things to love about paranormal romances.  For instance, endless possibilities and undying love to name just two of my favorite reasons.  What can I say, I'm a girl who likes variety, but constancy at the same time :)  Is it any wonder that I am a Gemini? (not that I really get into the whole astrology thing).

Author Katie Reus is my special guest today to talk about what she loves about writing paranormal romances, and to share a bit about her new Moon Shifter series that begins with Alpha Instinct. Read and enjoy!

Thank you so much for having me here today at Seductive Musings!

One of the many reasons I fell in love with paranormal romance was because of the world building. I love that anything is possible in paranormal worlds; angels, demons, shifters, fae, vampires…it doesn’t matter.

My first paranormal series (Moon Shifter) from Signet is releasing in a few days and when I first started working on Alpha Instinct, I had a lot of decisions to make. Where was the story going to take place? What gifts would my characters have? What would be their weaknesses? So many things to decide that I had never faced when writing romantic suspense. Of course romantic suspense has a whole mess of other things to worry about in world building, but I’m talking about the paranormal today.

Location was a big decision for me and ultimately I decided to create a fictional town for Alpha Instinct. I went to college in North Carolina (and it’s where I met my husband) and I’ve always had a special place in my heart for that state. I loved the seasons, the people and the fact that I didn’t have to drive too far to go snow skiing. If you’re familiar with North Carolina you might know that Beech and Sugar mountains are perfect places for a quick ski weekend getaway.

Since I didn’t want to use a real place for this series, I made one up and nestled it right between Sugar and Beech mountains. That’s how the mountain town of Fontana was born. I got to ‘build’ the entire town from scratch, right down to naming the diners, restaurants, art galleries, everything. It was time consuming but a lot of fun!

What do you enjoy about paranormal romance? One reader who comments on the blog today will be randomly selected to win a print copy of Alpha Instinct (US eligible only). Good luck and thanks for stopping by!

Fear has a scent. So does desire…

Ana Cordona has been a strong leader for the lupine shifters who survived after all the males and most of the females in her pack were mysteriously poisoned. As tough as she is, with no Alpha male, the pack is vulnerable to the devious shifter Taggart, who wants to claim both their ranch and Ana as his own. When Connor Armstrong comes back into her life, promising protection, it’s almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out on her before—and reluctantly accept his offer to mate.

The minute Connor sees Ana again, it reawakens a raw hunger. He must have her for his bondmate—his wolf cries out for it. But his human side knows he must proceed with caution because of their complicated past. If he is to truly have her body and soul, he must go beyond his burning desire and win back her heart. Whatever it takes, he is determined not to leave her side again.

But Taggart and his rival pack are not their only enemies. A human element in town is targeting shifters. Their plan not only threatens Ana and Connor’s future, but the lives of the entire pack…

Great excerpt! Nice introduction of the major characters, snippets of the issues facing the heroine and a yummy hero as well. I love paranormals because there are so many additional complications and benefits that can be included (including telepathy, pack dynamics, enhanced abilities, long/immortal lifespans, unlimited funds, etc.). Thank you for sharing and good luck with the new release!

Sexy Scottish shifters - I'm in for that! I don't read real life suspense because I get too anxious, but with paranormals, I know the situation isn't real, so I don't get anxious and they are a great escape. Plus I admire all of the authors' imaginations so much.

I guess what I love the most about paranormal romances are the way that each author can create a unique world and characters, only limited by their imaginations. I love that anything goes, there are not impossibilites, and the huge variety of characters, from vampires, to shifters, demons, angels, etc. PNR is what started me in romances and will probably always be my faves.

Your new book sounds awesome. I can't wait to read it, I love finding new series to read/follow. Thank you so much for the chance to win a print copy.

Why am I sucker for paranormal? It could be because of the fact that anything can happen (and usually does) in this genre--after all, if I wanted to read about the everyday, I'd pick up a nonfiction book. :) Or it could be because of the, often times, lush writing associated with this genre, due to all the world-building and fantasy elements.

Or maybe it is because of the yummy alpha-type males that we get out of this genre. :) Either way, I'm not complaining anytime soon!

I'm adding this one to my list, Katie--it sounds like a lot of fun!

What I enjoy most about paranormal romances is the author's imagination. They can create whatever creature they want and have them fall in love with another paranormal creature. There is no limit. They can be together no matter who they are and the author uses different worlds. Please enter me in contest.

I've had book lust for this title for a while now, ever since the great buzz started about it! Thanks for the excerpt and giveaway!

I love PNR/UF b/c like someone else mentioned, each author can create their own universe and world. Everything is new again and reading each book is such a wonderful experience b/c usually it's a unique experience.

Happy Friday!

Congrats on the upcoming release of Alpha Instinct.

I like paranormal romance because it's different from what I know, real monsters or beings different from us exist in them and allow me to use my imagination. The hot alpha males are always a plus, of course!

Thank you everyone who has stopped by today! These are all really fantastic answers. I've enjoyed reading them :) (and Ann, you're right, hot alpha males are definitely a plus!)

Congrats on your new release! You can't go wrong with Ewa da Cruz on the cover (unless she's joined by Paul Marron)!

I like to read paranormals to see how the author sets up the world - what is close to real life and what isn't. The possibilities are endless.

I am enjoying Paranormal Roamnces because they are so different from the books I have read in the past. I've read the mainstream contemporary & historical romances, but last year became much more interested in paranormals because they are so imaginative.
