Guest Author & Giveaway: Mia Marlowe featuring Touch of a Rogue

Thursday, March 8

Today my guest is the lovely and extremely talented (in more than one way) Mia Marlowe.  She has become one of my favorite authors ever since discovering her a few years ago.

She wrote one of my favorite romances from 2011, Touch of a Thief, and co-wrote one of the best Highland Romances I've read in several years with Connie Mason, Sins of the Highlander.  Needless to say, anytime I see she has a new book coming out it goes straight on the "Must be read soon, or I'll absolutely just die without it list", LOL.  I've been anxiously awaiting her newest book Touch of a Rogue since last year.  I hope you'll join me in all my excessive enthusiasm, and enjoy the interview with Mia Marlow :)

*************************************

Welcome back to Seductive Musings Mia! I’ve been a fan of your work through three different pen names, Diana Groe, Emily Bryan, and now Mia Marlowe. I’m curious about your pen names and how you go about choosing one that “fits” you and the romances that you write. Especially since so much importance is given to choosing a name, and most of us don’t get to pick the one we are given :)

Thanks for having me again. And I really appreciate you following me through all my name changes. Diana Groe is my real name, so it just sort of came with me. However, I see the benefits of using a pen name. For one thing, Groe is a little odd (but it came with such a terrific guy, I married him anyway!) Just as a side note, I recently got the rights back my Diana Groe books. All of them will be reissued as ebooks under the Mia Marlowe name. It’s just too hard to keep multiple names going. Each time I changed names was as a result of an editor’s request. For Emily and Mia, you’ll have to blame the Social Security Administration. I checked their site for the most popular names and both Emily and Mia had hit the top ten for the last few years.

In some of your most recent books that I’ve read (and loved) at least one of your characters has a supernatural “gift” of some sort. What is it about these special abilities that makes them such an essential component in an otherwise traditional historical, and makes them so compellingly seductive to your muse?

I enjoy a spark of magic in stories, but I’m not a vampire or were-something fan. I wanted to add a dash of something extra that seems more plausible. The “gift of touch” is sometimes called psychometry. It’s the ability to gather information from an inanimate object. There are people who claim to actually have this gift, but I’ve never met one personally. In my stories, the scales must balance. If someone is able to use an extrasensory ability, they must pay for the privilege. In my fictional world, the flashes of visions are accompanied by blinding headaches.

Having an extra ability makes my characters different, sets them apart and that’s not always a comfortable situation to be in. The most interesting people are the ones who a little off balance, IMO. ;-)

Your newest novel, Touch of a Rogue is the second book in your Touch of Seduction series. Can you tell us a little bit about the books in this series, how many there might be, and how they are all connected?

The hero or heroine in each of the Touch of Seduction series is a member of the Preston family. The unusual gift of touch came down to these cousins from their great-grandmother Delphinia (I plan to write a short story about her whirlwind courtship with a very surprised earl for this summer!) Right now there are three stories in the series—TOUCH OF A THIEF, TOUCH OF A ROGUE and coming in August TOUCH OF A SCOUNDREL. In each of the stories, there’s a mystery for the characters to solve and some heart-pounding black moments. I love to have a little adventure with my romance. It’s not necessary for readers to have read the first book in order to enjoy subsequent ones, but my heroine and hero from TOUCH OF A THIEF do reappear in TOUCH OF A ROGUE for a little bit. I always think it’s nice for readers to be able to check in with characters and find out what they’ve been up to since “the end.”

The series had gotten rave reviews so far. Touch of a Thief garnered a rare Publishers Weekly starred review. And I’m thrilled to share that Touch of a Rogue was named one of Publishers Weekly’s Top Ten Romances for Spring 2012!

Tell us more about your hero, Jacob Preston. What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine Lady Julianne, fall in love with him? And can you tell us a little bit about their story in Touch of a Rogue?

Jacob is a bit of a bounder, but that’s because he doesn’t think any woman would be able to put up with his mercurial mood swings that accompany the use of his gift. Because he’s sensitive to metals, he never learned to use a pistol, but he does wield a wicked platinum-hilted walking stick. (Platinum is the only metal that is silent before him and therefore is a restful “shield.”) He’s a quick-witted man of action. A reader recently wrote me that she visualized Robert Downey Jr. (in his Sherlock Holmes role) as Jacob. That certainly works for me!

The story starts when Lady Julianne Cambourne arrives at his London town house, seeking his help locating the last of a set of six Druid daggers which reputedly have magical qualities. She also wants  Jacob to prove that her late husband did not do away with himself, despite being found stabbed through the heart with one of the blades in a locked-from-the-inside room.

What's your favorite scene or moment from Touch of a Rogue, and why? Can you describe it (or provide a short excerpt) for us without giving too much away?

There are so many moments between Jacob and Julianne that I love it’s hard to choose just one. Here’s the beginning of a scene the morning after Jacob has agreed to help Julianne with her quest. He used his gift the night before, touching the dagger she left in his care and the blade very nearly killed him. After securing it safely in his platinum-lined safe, Jacob allowed his faithful servant Fenwick to dose him with his special tonic—a blend of whisky and laudanum—to  deal with the side effects of his gift. Julianne however, is unaware of Jacob’s secret and expects him to begin her investigation in a timely manner. In fact, she insists upon it.

Julianne pounded on the bedchamber door, but there was no response. “Mr. Preston, I insist you open at once or I’m coming in, whether you will it or not.”
“Your ladyship, I beg you. It would not be seemly,” Fenwick said, trying in vain to insert himself between her and his master’s chamber.
“Is it seemly for your employer to keep me waiting again?” Julianne glared at him until he stepped aside. “Mis-ter Pres-ton!” She rapped her knuckles sharply on the door between each syllable.
A low bellow came from the room, the feral noise sounding more like the guttural cry of a bull standing at stud than something torn from the throat of a man. Fenwick’s eyes went round and he jumped further away from the door. Julianne grabbed her chance, turning the crystal knob and pushing it open.
     “Mr. Preston, I—”
Words failed her. Jacob Preston was standing on his bed, legs spread, knees flexed and fists clenched. His red-rimmed eyes were wild as a stallion’s, his hair sticking out at odd angles like a startled hedgehog. His brows were lowered in a gladiator’s frown. He looked ready for the fight of his life.
Except for the fact that he was naked.

What are five fun facts about you, or this book,  that readers would love to know?

Here goes--
  1. I’m a linear pantser, which means I “write into the mist” (or ‘by the seat of my pants!) I begin with getting to know my characters, finding out who they are and what they want. Then I devise ways for them NOT to get it (insert evil laughter here!)  There have been times when I’ve wished I was a plotter, that I knew every turn and twist in my story before I started writing, but I figure if I’m surprised by the story, my readers will be, too.
  2. It takes me about 3 months to write a full length manuscript. I have done it in as little as 2, but I was sweating bullets trying to meet a deadline. I try very hard not to get into that sort of time crunch.
  3. In Touch of a Rogue, my heroine Julianne was an actress on Drury Lane before she was a countess. Since I used to sing professional opera, I have a theatre background that helps her character ring true.
  4. I’m in a partnership with New York Times bestseller Connie Mason to write a number of collaborative books. Our first release was SINS OF THE HIGHLANDER in Jan 2012. Watch for LORD OF FIRE AND ICE coming this July. We’re currently working on a new Regency-set series called The Royal Rakes.  The first book in that trilogy, WAKING UP WITH A RAKE, will be available in January 2013. It’s an extraordinary privilege to work with a romance legend like Connie.
  5. I love to connect with readers! You can find me on Facebook http://facebook.com/MiaMarloweFanPage and Twitter http://twitter.com/Mia_Marlowe . I also blog regularly at http://www.miamarlowe.com/blog !
Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

I have 4 print releases this year—Sins of the Highlander (Sourcebooks, Jan 2012), Touch of a Rogue (Kensington, March 2012), Lord of Fire and Ice (Sourcebooks, July 2012), and Touch of a Scoundrel (Kensington, August 2012). In addition to those, I’ve reissued Maidensong (Feb 2012) and will be releasing the second in the Songs of the North series (my Diana Groe books), Erinsong in April 2012. I adore these tales of love in the Dark Ages and am excited about offering them to readers as affordable ebooks.  My agent just informed me yesterday that we will also be able to reissue the Emily Bryan stories as well. You can find out more about all my books at http://miamarlowe.com/books/main.php

I am also working on a special project in conjunction with a group of very talented, NY published authors, but at this time I can’t say more. Except that it’s an exciting launch that will be a huge benefit to ebook readers who are looking for guaranteed quality reads. If you’d like to know more, please sign up for my newsletter so you’ll be the first to know all about it. http://miamarlowe.com/contact.php  In the meantime,  my lips are sealed.

He can keep her safe… or be her very ruin…

Jacob Preston has three requirements for a lover: She must be enthusiastic in affairs of passion, jaded in matters of the heart, and—to ensure the first two qualifications—she must be married.

Lady Julianne Cambourne has all the makings of a passionate lover, and she certainly shows no signs of sentimentality…but her unmarried status should render her firmly off limits to Jacob.

Instead, the lady proves too great a temptation. One that grows stronger when she comes desperate for his help. Beyond his rakish reputation, Jacob is known for the mysterious—even otherworldly—power of detection he commands through his sense of touch. And Julianne, surrounded by long-hidden secrets that threaten to ensnare her in a deadly trap, will do whatever it takes to recruit his skills…using every form of persuasion at her disposal…

I too have read your books under all three names. I am glad you are reissuing the Groe books under your newest name. I still have one I haven't found.

Since I too enjoy a touch of something different, a talent or that magical spark, your most recent books are perfect. I like more than just a relationship story, so the adventure, mystery and danger are just what I like. Thank you for providing stories that provide it all.

"To avoid utter ruin, Julienne must partner with a notorious scoundrel, whose touch will lead her to adventure, danger, passion and love."

Thank you for all the enjoyable books you have written. I look forward to reading all you have coming out .

Pat--Thanks so much for sharing the word about my work. Even in the IT age, word of mouth is still the best recommendation an author can get.

I'm looking forward to reading Touch of a Rogue, it sounds like a fantastic story. I love the paranormal touch, that always adds more enjoyment to any story for me.
