Guest Author: Rachel Grace featuring Geared for Pleasure

Wednesday, March 14

Last week I asked the question what was most important in creating a romance, and like me, many of you indicated that the setting was one of the least important (not the least, but low on the list) aspects contributing to a great romance read.  However, when it comes to Steampunk Romance, the setting is a character in and of itself and plays an elemental role in the romance.  Steampunk is a whole new romance realm for me to venture into.

Author Rachel Grace is my guest today to share a bit about her new book, Geared for Pleasure, the first book in her erotic romance Elemental Steam series.  Enjoy!

**************************************

GEARED FOR PLEASURE, Book one of the Elemental Steam series, has two contiguous stories-Earthly Desires and Fiery Temptations. Both take place in the world of Theorrey.

And Theorrey is a big world. A big, harsh, difficult, fascinating world.

Since this book was my homage to my friends, my group blog The Smutketeers, I had the characters-or at least-the rough outlines of the characters, before I had made a world for them to live in. Their particular quirks and issues definitely gave me a running start.

Unlike my alter ego, RG Alexander, who writes mostly paranormal, as Rachel Grace I was writing steampunk. Not steampunk. Clockworky steampunkitude (its my sub sub genre).

And a clockworky world is a complicated world.

In fact, worldbuilding was my first giant hurdle. I had to know a lot about it before I could start writing one word. I had to know its origins and come forward in time to see why, what had seemed so promising a civilization, had turned into a caste system with settlements for other species, rules and regulations that no human could succeed under, and a government—the Theorrean Raj and their science ministry—with an agenda all their own.

And then I had to experiment. To see what happened when I took their illusory symbol of perfection out of the picture. The queen. Turn the world upside down-where the criminals are the heroes and the authority petty thugs.

Where love can be found in the most unexpected of places, at the most inconvenient of times.

I had so many challenges that became obsessions. The science fiction aspect. Alchemy and machines. Inheritance, the genetics of the world, and theorrite, the mineral that is as mysterious as it is powerful. Also, my world is not your average steampunk. Most of the residents aren’t aware of airships as anything more than scary stories told in the night. Most residents aren’t aware that the Felidae that live in the settlements haven’t chosen to be there.

Most of them aren’t aware of a lot of things. Yet.

I think my biggest problem was holding myself back. Once the world began to form I wanted to keep writing it. So much so my critique partners and my husband aka "The Cookie", almost had an intervention.

My inspiration, what kept me going, were the characters. The sexually magnetic and slightly broken Seraphina. The naïve but undeniably loyal Dare. The mysteriously fascinating and seriously kickass Captain Nerida Amaranthe. And of course, the unforgettable Aurora.

And we can’t forget the men. At least, I can’t.

I’m hopeful that everyone will enjoy the world as much as I was obsessed with creating it. Thank you so much for inviting me to visit.

The world of Theorrey runs like a well-oiled machine. The elements are in balance, passion is tamed and the young queen is the heartbeat of it all. But in these two all-new stories of elemental steam, nothing is ever as it seems…

Earthly Desires

Demeter “Dare” Senedal is the Queen’s Chalice-her protector and closest companion. So when the queen goes missing, Dare rushes to locate her, even though the search leads her straight into trouble.

A gentleman who trades in secrets and sin, Bodhan revels in carnal delights, but when a naked and bound woman appears on his shore, he finds his hunger to possess at odds with his need to protect. As Bodhan shares his knowledge of pleasure, Dare must decide if she can trust him, both with her mission and her heart.

Fiery Temptations

Seraphina always lands on her feet. After all, she is a Felidae-more feline than human-and an excellent thief. There has never been a job Phina wouldn’t take or a man who could tame her…until she meets Cyrus Arendal.

As the Queen’s Sword, Cyrus should have known better than to fall victim to a beautiful bandit. Now, to find and retrieve the moonfire dagger, he’ll need to convince Phina not to judge a man by his station, but rather by how completely he can satisfy her desires.

I first read an excerpt at R.G.'s site and even though I've yet to read Steam Punk, this excerpt pulled me in. It's already on my TRL.
My favorite lines from the web site were these :
"The queen’s automaton tilted her head. “Welcome to Trader-der- der-der-Dare-Dare-Trader’s Square.”
Dare’s heart stuttered along with the replica’s vocal recording. Had it just said—? No, that was preposterous. It had to be a coincidence."

How did I miss this post yesterday!?!

Thanks for a fantastic post. I've been falling in love with steampunk over the last year. So I'm so excited to read about a new steampunk author since the pickings are pretty slim right now. This book sounds fantastic and I had put it on my wishlist a bit before this post b/c I had seen the cover on another blog and thought it and the premise sounded awesome!

have a wonderful day!

Geared for Pleasure sounds good. I love the cover. My favorite line from the excerpt is: “Listen to that,” a male voice drawled behind her. “If I closed my eyes, I’d be sure a lady from the Hill had come to visit with those sparklin’ manners, instead of a dirty lowborn boy.”

My FREE Kindle Quest

I've wanted a Kindle for what seems like forever, but haven't been able to afford it (and that's saying something since I can justify the cost of just about ANYTHING that I really want). I've tried winning one in one of the many giveaways that have taken place over the couple of years, but with no luck :( So I've decided to take matters in hand so to speak :) I've now decided that I am going to accumulate enough Swagbucks from my Swabucks searches to buy one...so in essence my new Kindle will be FREE...funded entirely by my internet searches done on Swagbucks. I'll keep you informed of the Great Kindle Quest below (in case you're interested....if not feel free to just skip over this part, but really who wouldn't be interested in a FREE Kindle?)
Goal: $119
Current Swagbucks Amazon Gift Card balance: $90.00
If you'd like to learn how you can earn Swagbucks and earn your own Amazon Gift Cards to buy books, a Kindle or other merchandise sold at Amazon contact me and I would be more than happy to tell you how I plan to go about it. (just so you know you can earn both Amazon.com and Amazon.ca gift cards on this rewards site)
