Monday's Muse

Monday, April 16

Sorry, but the image containing the Monday's Muse has been removed from this blog so as not to violate any copyright issues.  Thanks for your understanding!

I've been reading the same book for about a week now.  In some weeks, when I have the time I read up to three books a week, but for some reason I just can't get through this one.  I have about a hundred pages left to read in a book that is less than 400 pages long.

Some would just put the book down and move on, but I've read so many good reviews about this author, Joanna Bourne and her books.  I tried to read The Forbidden Rose a while ago, maybe a few years ago.  I actually checked it out of the library, started it, put it down, had to renew it, then had to take it back because I ran out of time.  Then I checked it out again....basically it was a repeat.  I never got through it.  It received rave reviews, so why am I not able to get into them?

I'm having the same kind of issues with The Black Hawk, her newest historical romance that came out around the beginning of the year.  And for the life of me, I can't tell you why I just can't get through it.  It's not that the writing is bad, or that the story doesn't have an interesting plot....but something about me and Ms. Bourne just don't seem to click.  I feel like I'm just not getting it, and I should be.  Which is why I've chosen this week's Muse.  I've selected him as my character representation of the hero from The Black Hawk.  He's supposed to be a darker complexioned Englishman who is a spy that poses as a Frenchman.  Our Muse is much more muscular than the hero is actually supposed to be...but hey, I need some help here to finish this book before I have to renew it again :)

When you don't connect with a book, or an author, that receives numerous awards and rave reviews what do you do?  Do you continue to try, do you even finish the book?

This week at Seductive Musings:
  • Monday:  I'll post any outstanding giveaway winners later today
  • Tuesday:  I'll have some reviews for you
  • Wednesday:  Historical romance author Lila DiPasqua will be my guest to share with us her new Fiery Tales story, Undone.
  • Thursday:  I'll either have a Thursday's Thoughts post, or one or two more reviews.  Depends on my whim :)
  • Friday:  Hmmm, what to do, what to do, LOL.  I'll surprise you with something.
  • Tempting Trailer:  This week's Tempting Trailer is a little bit different than what I normally feature.  It's not for a romance book, but for a memoir.  I'm talking about Paris in Love by Eloisa James.  I don't know about you, but I plan to read this book because I'm completely fascinated by her story of moving to Paris for a year.

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors will new releases this week, especially Musings author Lexxie Couper!  Congrats Lexxie!

Ah, Andrei Claude! He's no Paul but yummy in his own right.

I've only had one DNF book; I finish most anyway, mostly by skipping paragraphs and such.

What a beautiful Monday Muse. :)
Amazing, The Forbidden Rose is the book I can't get through. Why haven't I given up ? Have no clue. I just can't get into it the way I do with other books but I want to :) It's still o my dresser with it's bookmark. I have to be drawn in by the characters to get through but I figure I'll eventually do it.

I loved The Forbidden Rose..The Black Hawk you say? Have to find it.
If it's for my personal reading, I just mark it DNF. Life's too short and my list too long to do otherwise. Occasionally I'll put it aside to try later, sometimes it's my mood.
For review, I struggle through. There's only been 1 I couldn't finish. The one I finished last night didn't capture me like the the prior in the series. Could be that I don't like to be hit over the head & preached @. Some can do it subtly but this was too heavy handed. Sucked most of the enjoyment out for me...Bummer really because I loved the first but not likely to read the next 2 now...

Great inspiration for a bleh Monday! Thank you :)

I'm weird that I have to finish books no matter how much I dislike them. I guess I gotta make sure it's bad for me through and through so that I know that I wasn't giving up too easily. And I will slog through no matter how long it takes (I've been reading an RA Salvatore book that my BF is making me read going on 3 months now? and I can usually finish a book in 3 days) There have been a few books lately that everyone raved about and rated pretty highly that were either very meh for me or I down right disliked. I don't make much out of it. I know my reading taste and what I like. Just put it back and get a new one :)

Damn, but I love your muse this week. I think I'm going to steal him for the week, give him back next Monday. :D Maybe.... Lol

I've had a few books like that. Usually I try my hardest to finish the book (and doesn't that sound bad, forcing yourself to finish it?). But there have been a few that I just could not finish. There have been a few within this past year that everyone else loved--but, though I did manage to finish the books, I gave them a much lower rating (seems like 2 or 2.5) because something about them just rubbed me the wrong way. It's hard, but everyone likes different books, and sometimes a book, for whatever reason, just does not click. :)

Enjoy!

Hey Sheree!

I knew you'd know who are Muse was, LOL.

Generally I try to finish every book that I start, and very rarely do I just browse, but this author...I don't know what it is.

BTW: email me I have a Muse opportunity for you that I think you would be perfect for!

Carol L,

I'm glad I have such good company when it comes to this author's work. I just can't put my finger on why we don't click. Let me know if you figure it out because more than likely it's the same issues I'm having :)

Booklover1335 April 16, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Ivy,

See, that is what I'm talking about. So many people loved The Forbidden Rose as well as all of the other books this author has written, so I feel like I'm really missing out on something great, which is why I won't just put it down as a DNF.

Booklover1335 April 16, 2012 at 10:26 PM

Erin,

I'm the same way. I've only given up on one or two books...ever. And it's because of a few reads that I had a hard time getting into, but by the end I loved them so I am very reluctant to throw in the towel until "The End".

Sadly, despite all the accolades I think this is one author who's writing is just not for me apparently.

TBQ,

LOL, you might have to fight off a few others, including myself.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think I would feel better about not getting into the book if there was something that rubbed me the wrong way, but it isn't even that. It's a quandry!

Haven't read anything else but FR really snagged me.

My FREE Kindle Quest

I've wanted a Kindle for what seems like forever, but haven't been able to afford it (and that's saying something since I can justify the cost of just about ANYTHING that I really want). I've tried winning one in one of the many giveaways that have taken place over the couple of years, but with no luck :( So I've decided to take matters in hand so to speak :) I've now decided that I am going to accumulate enough Swagbucks from my Swabucks searches to buy one...so in essence my new Kindle will be FREE...funded entirely by my internet searches done on Swagbucks. I'll keep you informed of the Great Kindle Quest below (in case you're interested....if not feel free to just skip over this part, but really who wouldn't be interested in a FREE Kindle?)
Goal: $119
Current Swagbucks Amazon Gift Card balance: $90.00
If you'd like to learn how you can earn Swagbucks and earn your own Amazon Gift Cards to buy books, a Kindle or other merchandise sold at Amazon contact me and I would be more than happy to tell you how I plan to go about it. (just so you know you can earn both Amazon.com and Amazon.ca gift cards on this rewards site)
