Summary from the publisher:

Mackenzie Stewart’s in Scotland for a much-needed vacation. During the castle tour, Mackenzie becomes completely enamored with a painting of one of the previous lairds. Two gentlemen come up behind her and, begging her pardon, they kidnap her, dragging her through time.

The men are sorcerers attempting to end a feud that has plagued their lands for years. Their patron has begun to dabble in the black arts, and between his irrational thirst for power, and his dark secret, the sorcerers are frightened. They believe Mackenzie can break the Stewart curse. They try to convince her to play along with their crazy scheme: marriage to the evil John Campbell.

Before Mackenzie can protest, her carriage is halted and the door thrown open. For a split-second she is arrested by the same beautiful piercing blue eyes that belonged in an oil painting.

Mackenzie then finds herself the victim of a second kidnapping!

Her new captor, however, does nothing but tempt her body and her temper. Believing her to in fact be the betrothed of his mortal enemy the Campbell, Connor originally sets out to capture his enemy’s betrothed. He never thought he would be so attracted to her that he’d want to keep her.

My Musings:

I was a little scared to start this book because I “know” Laura through Goodreads.  I have been wanting to read her book for a while but I couldn’t stop myself from wondering what I would say if I hated it.  I put off starting this book for a couple weeks because of that, eventually I realized how stupid that was and started reading.

Mackenzie is your average American girl.  She’s in her early 20’s and this is her first trip outside the US.  I liked that she had normal and realistic reactions.  She was confused by the clothing of the past, she hated the way women were treated, and she was a little scared of the food, all seemed like perfectly appropriate reactions to me.  Mackenzie is young so she is a bit gullible and a little naive but she handles herself very well and comes across as charming and endearing.  Looking back, I realize that Mackenzie reminded me of MacKayla from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, I felt an instant connection to her and a little protective of her because of that.

I adore Connor.  He had the typical highlander characteristics of being a strong warrior, protective, and sexy but he had other qualities which surprised me.  He had a really sweet and nurturing nature that made him so lovable.  He was absolutely perfect for Mackenzie.  I liked them both so much that I found myself rooting for them to find a way to be together.  I had no idea how their happy ending was going to work out but I wanted to see it unfold.

I had some issues with the execution and pace of the story.  I thought the kidnapping/time travel scene at the beginning was awkward.  It came across as too clinical and detached for me.  Mackenzie’s reaction was off too, she was too accepting and that didn’t strike me as a normal reaction.  Luckily, the first kidnapping scene is only a couple pages long so I didn’t have to dwell in that very long.  Near the end, the transition from dream prophecies to reality was repetitive and I ended up skimming the dreams whenever they came up.  The end was also rushed, so much happened so quickly that I had to go back and read paragraphs multiple times to make sure I caught it all.

The romance was great but I did have a couple issues with the telling of their story.  Still, it’s a good book and Laura should be very proud of it.  If I ever have the chance to read another of her books I will do it.

Overall: 3
Sensuality level: 3

Highlander Romance--With those two words, I'm in! Lol.

I've talked with Laura on Tweeter, great person from what I can tell, and I can understand being a bit hesitant to want to review--it's a bit daunting, isn't it, when you actually "know" the author? :) But you did a wonderful job at reviewing this book, and I'd like to thank you for sharing your honest thoughts on it!
