Summary from the publisher:

Amy Hardwick has one last Season to shake off her wallflower image and make a love match. If she can't, she'll set aside her dreams of romance and return home to a suitor who can provide security-if little else. What she doesn't count on is the inappropriate-and irresistible-attention lavished on her in a darkened library by rake extraordinaire Will "The Devil" Darcett . . .

When Will is caught in a tryst with the ton's shyest miss, he knows he must offer for her hand. Yet Amy is not the shrinking violet she seems to be. Passion lies beneath her prim exterior and Will is eager to release it. But winning Amy isn't simply a matter of seduction; first, Will must convince her that he's mended his wicked ways . . .

My Musings:

Will is the ultimate unrepentant rake.  He has schemed, manipulated and charmed in order to get his way all all his life and has no plans to change anytime soon.  His only redeeming qualities are his love for children, animals and he is a good friend.

Amy has a vibrant personality but her shyness has made her a wallflower.  She has one final year to break out of that mold.  She decides that she is going to overcome her shyness and be herself.  This is her last chance to enjoy a London season and she is not going to waste it cowering on wallflower row.

I loved that Amy saw through Will’s charm.  She did not like him and she definitely did not trust him.  It was fun watching their relationship grow from dislike, at least on Amy’s part, onto acceptance and eventually to love. The timing and flow of the romance was perfect and drew me in as few books do.  Their own separate deceptions within the marriage added an interesting layer to the romance.  In general I don’t care for sweet romantic scenes but these were so well done that I couldn’t help but enjoy.  They led up to some steamy love making scenes which were pretty hot, I always enjoy those.

The other characters in the novel were well done and interesting in their own right.  Aunt Hester cracked me up with her one liners and blunt honesty.  I want an Aunt Hester!  Will’s friends helped to give him some humanity and balance his rakish ways.  I also liked that Will had a huge meddling family.  They had so much love for each other but they also had some strained relationships and issues within the family.

My only complaint, and it’s a minor one, is that Amy’s deception in the marriage seemed overblown.  There was a disconnect between the way it was described and how I processed it.  The consequences didn’t seem real and the deception was minor, especially when compared to Will’s deception.

I highly recommend this book, especially to readers that love rakes.  Will is one of the best rakes I’ve ever encountered and his eventual redemption is absolute perfection.

Overall: 4.25
Sensuality level: 3.5 (Very sweet and romantic in general but some of the sex scenes and language used in them are graphic.)

Thanks for the great review! This is on the top of my wishlist. I have Vicky's first book but I haven't read it yet. Must get started on that one so I can justify buying this book :)

Hi Vicky. I believe Congratulations are in order for your RITA nomination for How to Marry a Duke. I didn't dream that did I? :) I'm looking forward to this book too. Your nomination was justly deserved.

Hi Andrea!
Wonderful review, good thing this book is in my TBR pile.

Hi Lil Miss Molly,

Thanks for the congratulations. I'm a triple finalist in the RITAs with How to Marry a Duke and How to Seduce a Scoundrel - both for Best Regency Historical. How to Marry a Duke was also nominated for Best First Book. I still can't believe I got three nominations on my first time to enter!
