Summary from the publisher:

Our journey began in fire...

Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness--beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white hot. I was drawn to him as I'd never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily...

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other's most private wounds... and desires.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn't tear us apart...

My Musings:

Bared to You by Sylvia Day pits Eva Tramell against the insistent blandishments of the rich and powerful Gideon Cross who decides that he must have the newly hired assistant as his lover.

Eva has moved across the country and is starting a new job, determined to make her own mark without trading on the favors that she can request through her connections.  She demands to be considered more than a brief sexual partner and wants to be considered a human being first, but has trouble resisting the heavy-handed insistence of a man who is used to getting whatever or whomever he wants.

She has plenty of baggage from her traumatic experiences during her mother’s previous marriage and it colors her interactions with the infatuated Cross who has his own serious emotional scars.  They are drawn to each other even as they become entangled in the epitome of a dysfunctional relationship.  Their on-again, off-again dance of sexual need and rejection forms the basis for this intense Crossfire novel.  Eva is quick to feel rejected and insecure while dealing with the often overpowering and arrogant Gideon and neither is adept at communicating true feelings.  Complicating matters is Cary Taylor, Eva’s roommate, confidante and former therapy cohort, who seems to be on a path of self-destruction and dysfunction himself even as his professional career seems to be ascending.  All three of these damaged people must refrain from hiding their feelings by engaging in mindless sex and open themselves up to the vulnerability of placing their trust in another person.

This was a very intense tale that was filled with scorchingly carnal encounters, which were initially used to assuage mutual lust, but soon developed into a tenuous relationship between two insecure people.  The author is adept at conveying a wealth of information within a sentence or two (e.g. ”Cooking was one of Cary’s joys, but it wasn’t one of his talents”).   The frequent misunderstandings and attempts at reconciliation that usually involve the purchase of extravagant gifts and steamy make-up sex make this a very rocky and exhausting relationship. There is no true resolution of any of the conflicts, just a temporary bandage on some serious issues that must be faced and dealt with, theoretically in the next book.

Bared To You is a steamy, emotional, very compelling and arousing read, but I was emotionally exhausted by the end.  I am not sure this is something I would read over and over, but then again I am not the type of person who stops and rubbernecks at accidents or watches reality TV shows like “Housewives of....”,  so high drama is not quite to my taste BUT I will definitely want to read the sequel!

Overall: 4.5 stars
Sensuality level: 5   (Multiple very intense scenes with a little something to tempt most palates...M/F, M/M, M/M/F/F...)
