Guest Author & Giveaway: N.J. Walters featuring Legacy Found

Thursday, June 28

When I decided to feature authors that had book covers featuring our Muse, Jason Baca,  this week I was really excited when I saw that he was on the cover of one of author N.J. Walters' books.  I've seen her books around, read some great reviews for many of her series books, but hadn't actually picked one up before.  Why?  I don't really have a good reason.  I always meant to get around to it.

After learning more about her books in preparing for Ms. Walters to be a guest at Seductive Musings I pretty much decided that this is an author that I've really been missing out on.  And that I need to change that fact.  Pronto.

N.J. Walters is my special guest today to share with us a book from her popular Legacy series, Legacy Found.  Enjoy!

Welcome to Seductive Musings NJ! For you, what makes a romance novel a great love story and what makes writing emotional and sensual romances so compellingly seductive to your muse?

Thank you so much. I’m thrilled to be here at Seductive Musings!

In my opinion, a great love story is one where the hero and heroine come together after overcoming obstacles,  either physical or emotional or both. They’re different people at the end of the story then they were at the beginning, and their coming together has made them stronger, better people. And I personally have to like the hero and heroine. The hero can be dark and brooding, but never unnecessarily cruel. The heroine can’t be a whiner or I just get annoyed.

And as for what makes writing emotional and sensual romances compelling to me…well, I write what I love. I’m a HEA (Happily Ever After) kinda gal. I can’t imagine writing any other kind of story. It’s all about the emotional journey of the characters. And, of course, what’s more emotional than sharing intimacy and sex with another person. It’s all a part of the characters’ stories. What’s wonderful about romance is there are so many interesting sub-genres to explore both as a writer and a reader, and I love them all.

Legacy Found is the third book in your Legacy series. Can you tell us a little bit about the books in this series, how many there are, and how they are all connected?

The Legacy series began when I decided I wanted to write a werewolf series. I’m a big fan of paranormal romance, and had written some vampire and shape shifter books, but I’d never done a werewolf series. There are currently five books available in eBook, and the sixth one in the series, Damek’s Redemption, will be released by Samhain Publishing in October 2012.

It all began  with Alexandra’s Legacy when I had a vision of a twenty-two year old woman who works in her father’s garage in a not so great neighborhood in Chicago. Alexandra Riley has no idea just how much her life is going to change when a tall, dark stranger appears in her father’s garage and completely blows up her idea of what her life is. She discovers her father has lied to her all her life—he is really a pureblood werewolf and she is a half-breed. Now she is in danger from paranormal bounty hunters who want to kill her. But there are also certain factions of pureblood werewolves who want her dead, not wanting their bloodlines diluted by her half-breed blood. Then there are the werewolves who want to mate with her because female werewolves are scarce. All of them are now searching for her and she must depend on the stranger, Joshua Striker, to keep her safe as they make their way to the protection of her father’s former pack. And if that wasn’t enough, she’s about to go into heat!

The other books in the series flow from the first one. (The Legacy series in order: Alexandra’s Legacy, Isaiah’s Haven, Legacy Found, Quinn’s Quest, Finding Chrissten and, coming in October 2012, Damek’s Redemption, which is actually about a vampire and not a werewolf.)

Tell us about your hero, James Riley.  What do you think will make readers, much like his heroine Shelley, fall in love with him? And can you tell us a little bit about their story in Legacy Found?

I knew from the minute I started writing Alexandra’s Legacy that I would have to tell James’s story. I actually started to do it in that book, but quickly realized that James would need a book of his own. James LeVeau Riley is Alexandra’s Father, a werewolf in the prime of his life who left his pack after the death of his  mate. After traveling around for decades, he ended up fathering a child with a human woman who left him to raise his daughter, Alexandra, on his own. To protect his daughter, he stayed away from his former pack and all other werewolves. James is very loyal and protective and has made it his mission in life to raise his daughter and keep her safe, even if that eventually means letting her go when she finds love. I fell in love with James from the beginning and knew he deserved his own happy ending, but I also knew it wouldn’t come easy and it would take a very special woman.

In Legacy Found, James discovers Shelley working at a roadside diner, living among humans without a pack nearby. He immediately feels protective of her and convinces her to come with him and allow him to help her uncover her past and to learn about herself and what it means to be a werewolf. Along the way, her gentle strength and amazing courage attract him until he cannot resist the lure of this remarkable female werewolf.

Now that we know a little bit about James, can you tell us about your heroine, Shelley? What makes her the perfect woman for the gentle yet commanding alpha shifter?  What are some of the qualities that attracts him to her and makes her irresistibly tempting?

Shelley’s story is one of pain, suffering and courage. Captured by paranormal bounty hunters when she is only a teenager, Shelley has been subjected to such trauma she no longer remembers her past. She’s spent the past thirty-five years imprisoned by the man who took her. But when the opportunity arises, Shelley kills her captor and escapes, knowing his friends will hunt for her and kill her if they find her. Shelley knows she’s a werewolf, but remembers nothing about her heritage or family.

Shelley is a mixture of fragility and strength that draws James to her when he discovers her working in a roadside diner. He immediately knows she is one of his kind but quickly realizes she has no idea he’s a werewolf too. And once she does know, she is frightened of him. His protective instincts all surge to the fore and he cannot fight them and his growing attraction to her. He convinces her to go with him after she is fired from her job and the more he learns about her, the more he comes to understand just how courageous and amazing she is.

What's your favorite scene or moment from Legacy Found, and why? Can you describe it (or provide a short excerpt) for us without giving too much away?

One of my favorite moments in Legacy Found is when Shelley is leaving James. She has so many issues to work out and wants to stand on her own two feet. James doesn’t want her to leave the pack, but he lets her go, even though it’s one of the hardest things he’s ever done. It shows the strength of both characters. James is willing to go through the pain of letting Shelley go because it’s what she wants and needs, and Shelley is willing to leave in order to make herself stronger so she might be able to one day commit to a permanent relationship with him.

James wanted to drive his fist through the wall. He needed to feel the sting of pain to distract him from the total destruction of his heart. Shelley was leaving him.

He knew it wasn’t logical to feel that way. Shelley was doing what she felt she needed to do. Still, he felt betrayed.

After spending the last week in her bed, he’d thought he’d gotten through to her, thought she’d understood how he felt about her.

All the hair on his body bristled as the wolf inside him howled for release. He clamped his hands around the edge of the countertop, not surprised to see claws instead of fingers. He was close.
His mate was leaving him and he didn’t think he’d survive.

But he would because this was what she needed. He needed to set her free if he was ever going to have a chance of claiming her as his mate. If he kept her here, forced her to stay, she’d never forgive him. And he’d be as bad as those bastard bounty hunters.

No, as hard as it was, he was going to have to let her go.

His heart felt as though a gigantic boulder was lying on it. She hadn’t even left and already he was bereft.

Taking a deep breath, he straightened and rolled his shoulders. He could do this. For Shelley. For himself.

What are five fun facts about this book (or series), that readers would love to know?
  1. James’s story was originally supposed to be part of Alexandra’s Legacy, but I decided he needed his own story. So I had to remove all the sections that pertained to James and Shelley from Alexandra’s Legacy and expand Alexandra and Joshua’s story.
  2. I’d originally planned to write books for the Wolf Creek Pack in North Carolina. Then I met the Haven Pack in Chicago in Isaiah’s Haven and, other than James’s book, the rest of the series revolved around them instead.
  3. When I originally wrote about Quinn Lawton, I had no idea he would grow into such a huge character with not only a book for him, but also one for his twin sister Chrissten.
  4. I hesitated to start Legacy Found with a scene where the heroine murders someone, but I knew it had to be true to Shelley, to show readers her desperation and her courage. I trusted they would love her as much as I did.
  5. Damek was always meant to be a secondary character, after all he’s a vampire in a werewolf series. But he wouldn’t fade into the shadows and demanded his own book. I had so many readers ask about him that Damek finally got his own book. You will see the Haven pack in this book, but it’s all about the vampire!
We’ve talked a lot about Legacy Found today, a book that has been out for a while.  Can you tell us about some of your upcoming releases, or new projects that we can look forward to?

I’d love to tell you more about my upcoming projects! As I said, Damek’s Redemption will be releasing from Samhain Publishing in October. After that, I’m taking a break from this series and will have a new paranormal/shape shifter quartet releasing from Samhain Publishing starting in January 2013 with Night of the Tiger.

Touch of Topaz, the seventh book in the Awakening Desires series, just released from Ellora’s Cave. This is a stand alone, contemporary/erotic romance, but readers of the series will recognize the heroine (Topaz Jewel) from an earlier book (Jackson’s Jewel). I’m currently working on her sister Sapphire’s story.

Finally, just for fun…if you could write the “fortune” in a fortune cookie what would it be?

Reach for your dreams!

She outran her memories. She couldn’t outrun her past.

Legacy, Book 3

Shelley is a killer. Never mind that her “crime” freed her from thirty-five years of brutal captivity—the bounty hunters on her trail don’t care. For the first time in her life, she is on her own, free to put the past behind her and explore what it means to be a werewolf.

James Riley is dead tired. After a week untangling legal and financial affairs his brother’s death left behind, he’s feeling every ounce of his new responsibility as Wolf Creek pack alpha. He’s not too tired, though, to notice his sexy waitress is a werewolf—one that strangely doesn’t recognize him as one of her own kind.

After his questions rattle her composure and get her fired, Shelley figures the least James can do is drive her to the next town, but he wants more. He wants to take her home. And despite her fear, something inside her is irresistibly drawn to his commanding yet gentle presence.

James is willing to give Shelley all the time she needs to embrace her heritage, her sexuality, and eventually his love. But her past will not be denied...and her secrets demand a price paid in blood.

Product Warnings:
This book contains a hunky werewolf, a woman with a secret past, a lost family found, nasty bounty hunters, and lots of steamy hot sex!

Thanks N.J. for being my guest today!  While I don't read a lot of paranormal romance, if it involves a werewolf shifter....I'm so there :)  I find shifter alpha heroes completely it animal magnetism if you will, LOL. I guess one of the benefits of discovering the series five books into it is that I don't have to wait for each new book, LOL.  I think I've really missed out on this author up to this point.

I'm not entering for the giveaway as I have the series. Just stopping in to say that I loved the interview and the Legacy series is one of my favorites! I randomly picked Alexandra's Legacy one day and couldn't put it down. I've been picking up each book as they come out. Thanks for such a great series!

Anne June 28, 2012 at 3:58 PM

What I find intriguing is that Shelley was held captive for 35 years. It doesn't state when she was taken, but she's quite mature for a heroine. I'm thinking N.J.'s shifters are the long lived type so she would still be youngish in their society. Am I right?

Thank you so much, Susan. That really means a lot to me. :)

She's now fifty, Anne, taken when she was only fifteen, young in their society. But she is a full adult now and her experience has matured her.

"His mate was leaving him and he didn't think he'd survive." That was a shot but sweet excerpt. Iv'e not heard of this author but I'll be looking her up.

Great post, NJ! I loved the list of 5 fun facts--it sounds like sometimes the characters and stories take directions of their own ;) NJ, does that happen often for you, or do they usually do what you envision for them beforehand?

I've read the first two books in this series and this reminded me that I'd meant to get Legacy Found. I loved James in Alexandra's Legacy and I wanted to see him find some happiness. My favorite line:

"No, as hard as it was, he was going to have to let her go."
