Summary from the publisher:

Kee Smith battled through a difficult childhood to work her way up the ranks of the U.S. Army. When she finally makes it into the elite Night Stalkers, she feels thrilled, honored, and vindicated...until she finds out she's been assigned to the "girlie-chopper" piloted by the only other woman in the regiment.

Kee is determined to show Lt. Archie Stevenson, one of the male co-pilots, that she is just as tough as the guys. Throughout their special mission, Archie doesn't know whether to make love to her or plant her face-first into the dirt. But he'll do whatever it takes to break through that shield Kee wears around her heart.

My Musings:

I Own the Dawn was different than most romance novels I usually read. For one, there is a lot of technical military talk in this book. It did lose me just a little bit but only because I had nothing to reference the descriptions against..short of Googling it. But, I know there are people who are really into that sort of detail and would enjoy those parts of this book. Second, Kee is the alpha in the story. I've read books with some very strong female leads, but never one that has a female alpha.

Kee Smith runs the show, or tries to at least. She is a hard-edged woman that came from the streets to work her way up the military chain. Even though she is a good at what she does, she is constantly trying to prove herself to those around her. She often feels unworthy, which makes her bristle against anyone that looks at her sideways.
Archie Stevenson, also knows as 'The Professor', is her superior officer and the co-pilot of the team Kee is a part of. Since he is not the alpha of the story, he has a very quiet yet solid personality. He is like the rock that the storm named Kee Smith keeps beating against. She keeps trying to push him away and he isn't budging. Even though fraternizing between ranks is against the rules, Kee and Archie find themselves gravitating towards each other. For most of the book, Kee handled the affair with a shrug. This is all part of her defense mechanism to keep people at arms length. But because of it I had a hard time feeling the intense emotional connection between them.

Archie is smart, but fairly shy when it comes to women. I think he falls in love with Kee fairly quickly but isn't really able to work up the nerve to tell her until near the end of the book. The love scenes are fairly brief and with minimal detail. Slightly disappointing, but I understand why they were written that way. It fit with the story even if it left me wanting more.

Also working to bring down Kee's walls is an orphaned girl named Dilya. She is rescued after the Night Stalkers blow up a suspicious jeep that Dilya was about to scavenge for food. The little girl is tired, starving, and can't speak English. My favorite parts of the book are when the Night Stalkers find their own special ways to engage the girl, even though they don't speak the same language. Kee has an instant attachment to the girl that confuses her since she has always looked out only for herself.

There really wasn't any outside conflict for the majority of this book. There were a lot of night patrols, a few minor scuffles, and a fairly intense but quickly resolved mission at the end of the book. But there was no deficient 'bad guy' throughout this book. It focused mostly on Kee learning to forgive herself for her past, to allow herself to love and be loved, and to trust other people. And the man and little girl that help her do that. Like I said, not the usual romance novel. It was more military fiction with a little romance fluff thrown in.

This book sounds intriguing and I love a good book with a military story and then throw in some hot romance and I am in.
