Thursday's Thoughts: My Campaign to Save the "Romance" in the Romance Book Cover!

Thursday, October 11

We are in the midst of election season and I am really thankful that I don't live in a swing state so I'm spared many of the campaign commercials that some people are being inundated with.  And normally I like to stay out of politics on a public platform because I think these kinds of decisions are personal.  My beliefs may be different than yours, but at least here on this blog we have common ground.  Our love of the romance novel!

So why am I talking campaigns and romance novels? Because I have a campaign of my put back the "romance" in the Romance book cover. It began a few weeks ago with my last Thursday's Thoughts post, and was reinforced this week when I saw these yesterday on Heroes and Heartbreakers:

These are the new covers for Maya Banks' upcoming Breathless Trilogy, and in case you didn't know, these are supposed to be Erotic Romances. For heavens sakes the Fever cover looks to be melting snow or ice...that doesn't say Fever to me, does it to you? Here's the description for Rush:

Gabe, Jace, and Ash: three of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the country. They're accustomed to getting anything they want. Anything at all. For Gabe, it's making one particular fantasy come true with a woman who was forbidden fruit. Now she's ripe for the picking...

When Gabe Hamilton saw Mia Crestwell walk into the ballroom for his hotel's grand opening, he knew he was going to hell for what he had planned. After all, Mia is his best friend's little sister. Except she's not so little anymore. And Gabe has waited a long time to act on his desires.

Gabe has starred in Mia's fantasies more than once, ever since she was a teenager with a huge crush on her brother's best friend. So what if Gabe's fourteen years older? Mia knows he's way out of her league, but her attraction has only grown stronger with time. She's an adult now, and there's no reason not to act on her most secret desires.

As Gabe pulls her into his provocative world, she realizes there's a lot she doesn't know about him or how exacting his demands can be. Their relationship is intense and obsessive, but as they cross the line from secret sexual odyssey to something deeper, their affair runs the risk of being exposed—and vulnerable to a betrayal far more intimate than either expected.

They've taken the Fifty Shades marketing too far this time.  Because in these covers you don't even get objects that are somewhat reflective of the story like, a briefcase, or cufflinks, or something/anything like we saw on some of the covers I featured before...the images, if you can even call them that, on the Breathless Trilogy represent absolutely....nothing.  They are so nondescript that I don't know why they didn't just put Ms. Banks' name in a pretty font and call it a day....similar to the covers for Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty series.

All I can say is is that it's a good thing it has Maya Banks' name on them because that is the only thing that is going to sell these books.  Maya, if you happen to read this.  I LOVE your books, and my rant on this trend has absolutely nothing to do with your stories.  I sincerely hope that the closer it gets to the release dates next year, that these books will get the book covers that they deserve! After all they did a fabulous job with the new cover for the mass market version of Sweet fact I like it better than the original.

I'm so frustrated by this trend (which I hope dies a quick death) and it's depersonalization, dehumanization and deromanticization of the Romance book cover, because as readers we have little to NO recourse to voice our displeasure.  Usually you can get your point across with your pocket book, by not buying/supporting what displeases you.  But as I see it our only two options are to continue buying the books despite the covers, which as a result reinforces the belief of powers that be that these were the right way to market these books, OR boycott books with the 50 Shades covers because they are abandoning one of the things that romance readers love about the books they buy...the covers.

The second option is completely unacceptable, at least to me, because it detrimentally impacts the authors who spent countless hours and hard work to write these books, and more than likely had little to no input on how their books are being visually represented.  I feel like it is my patriotic Romance duty to Campaign against this book cover trend, which I think is a CRIME to all that the Romance genre stands for.

And since actions speak louder than words, I've even gone as far as creating a petition so that our voices as romance buyers can be heard without hurting the authors we enthusiastically support.

Save the Romance Cover & sign the Petition, then share it with your Romance reading friends by posting it to Twitter, Facebook, or your own blog or website. The more signatures we get the better are chances are of making a difference!

or go to this link to sign it.

So while I am all for the ol' Red, White, and Blue in our American flag and all that it stands for.....I'm not so keen on it being on my Romance covers (take a look again at the color scheme on the Breathless covers in case you missed it before).

What do you think, will this do any good?  Do you have any ideas on how to stop this travesty?

p.s. sorry for all of the links instead of pictures. Blogger was not playing nice when I was putting this post together so if it goes back to normal in time I will go through and insert what I had originally intended :(

I so agree that these are terrible covers. I saw them in another newsletter this morning and I completely blew past them. For some reason when I started reading the post I noticed Maya Banks' name.

I would always at least read the blurb for one of her books, but these covers wouldn't give me any clue they were by her and I would care to look at them closely enough to see her name. (I was thinking YA.)

I totally admit covers are a big draw for me and this new trend sucks.

See, I don't find them so bad, okay they are not traditional, but they are exotic in their own way. I like to see a traditinal cover, but it is also nice to see things shaken up now and then. As you said becasue Maya Banks name is on the cover, her loyal fans and I am certain new fans will flock to these books..

I totally agree I hate thus new trend in covers. I want to see romance and hot men. lol. I will buy and read these Maya Banks books because I love her and really what's inside the book covers is what matters. But a hot cover helps when picking out a book.

I am guilty of looking at the covers and judging. I looked at these and passed them up, then read that you said they were Maya Banks which makes me want to go see what they are about. But bad cover means I might not even take the time to see who wrote it. I want some romance covers back.
