Monday's Muse

Monday, April 30

Sorry, but the image containing the Monday's Muse has been removed from this blog so as not to violate any copyright issues.  Thanks for your understanding!

It's Monday, but oddly enough I'm kind of glad that the weekend...and April, is over.  April was a pretty sucky month for me overall, and I am going to welcome May with open arms!

It was cold and rainy over the weekend, and of course it was the weekend for our annual neighborhood garage sale.  I always think that they plan it too early for the Midwest because the weather is chancy at this time of year for us.  One day, or more, it always rains, and it's cold....I'm so glad it's over with. Especially this year.  Family members have decided that since my garage sales usually do well because of the amount of traffic due to the neighborhood sale, that they would rather just put it all in mine.  Which was fine in years past when they helped...that is until they've gotten lazy.  As in, basically dropping off their stuff and expecting me to do all of the prep work, the setup, manning the sale, taking it all down, and then showing up to collect their money.  Not cool.

AND  to top it all off, this year I had people who bought things on one day, then came back the next day and wanted to return it for their money back.  Not because their was anything wrong with the stuff...they just changed their mind, or the clothing was the wrong size.  Can you believe that!  I'm not a retail store.  It. is. a. garage. sale.  I wouldn't think I would have to say it, but next year, if I do it at all, I'm going to have to put up a All Sales are Final sign.  I mean really, what is the world coming to when you have to put up no smoking signs, all sales are final signs at a garage sale...what will be next....legal disclaimers on hand written receipts?  *Sigh*  I'm just glad it's all over and done with.

One bright spot to my weekend....Unleashed by Cherrie Lynn.  A friends to lovers story that I loved!   A friend from an online chat recommended the second book in this series, Rock Me, to me a while back and I read it right away and I really loved it(and has a hero that is pierced in some interesting places).  This weekend I finally got around to reading the first book (Unleashed).  I think I might have found a new favorite contemporary erotic romance author in Ms. Lynn.  She has a freebie that is related to Unleashed on her website, Barely Leashed, that I plan to read next.   The hero in Unleashed is a lawyer, which is why this week's Muse is Mark Valley, who plays a lawyer on the TV show Harry's Law.  Don't you just love a man in a suit? (and yes, I think his birthday suit counts too, LOL).

What about you?  How was your April and what are you looking forward to in May?

This week at Seductive Musings:
  • Monday:  I'll have winners from any outstanding giveaways
  • Tuesday:  Erotic Romance author Jessica Clare will be my guest to share her new book The Girl's Guide to (Man) Hunting...now this I gotta see :)
  • Wednesday:  Historical Romance author Grace Burrowes is gracing us with her presence to share her new book Lady Maggie's Secret Scandal
  • Thursday:  Since we've been in the present, and the past, on Thursday we'll spend some time in the future with Lauren Dane's new Futuristic Erotic Romance, Captivated.  And if I have time I will post Andrea's review of Captivated.
  • Friday:  I'll post some more reviews.
  • Tempting Trailer: This week's Tempting Trailer is for Mary Balogh's new release The Proposal.  I have a confession to make.  Despite Mary Balogh being a romance legend....I've never read one of her books.  Not a single one.  I mean, she's a legend for a reason, right?  So, why am I not more excited about reading one of her books?  I honestly don't have an answer to that.

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors will new releases this week, especially Musings authors Mary Jo Putney, Maya Banks, Lauren Dane, Grace Burrowes, Ashley March, Lorelei James, Cara Elliott, Shona Husk, Elizabeth Amber, Bronwen Evans, Melissa McClone, and last but not least during this romance release bonanza week...Jessica Clare!  Congrats!!!

Guest Author & Giveaway: Stefanie Sloane featuring The Saint Who Stole My Heart

Friday, April 27

I think many a romance reader will say that Jane Austen (& Mr. Darcy), played a large part in their love of historical romance.  I know it did mine.  But very few have successfully found a way to live their dream of being a Regency Miss like historical romance author Stefanie Sloane has.

Stefanie is my guest today to share her top ten reasons why being a Regency Miss is better than living in the modern world, LOL.  Enjoy!

~~~***~~~
I’m often asked why, exactly, I chose to set my Regency Rogues series during the English Regency—roughly 1790 – 1820s. And I’ve offered many answers, most of which were true. But do you want to know the real reason? My first Jane Austen novel did me in. Absolutely ruined me for the modern world. Ever since, and many BBC productions later, I’ve dreamed of being a British lady of the ton. And when I discovered I could live vicariously through my characters? Even better.
And so, gentle reader, I offer you the top ten reasons why being a Regency Miss would absolutely kick ass:
  1. While one would most certainly not be allowed to use the aforementioned “ass,” there is a whole host of delightfully colorful words that would be at one’s disposal, including “faradiddle,” “foxed,” and “bamboozle.”
  2. If set upon by an overly amorous suitor or mind-numbingly boring acquaintance, one would have the option to simply faint! Yes, there were smelling salts. But consider this argument: who would continue to berate you with obnoxious conversation or wandering hands once you’d dropped to the floor in a fit? No one, that’s who!
  3. The fashionable empire waist dresses would hide one’s muffin top exceedingly well.
  4. There is no technology to speak of, at least not in terms of what we consider useful and forward thinking. No phoning. No texting. No IMing. No skyping. No ing-ing at all.  When not in the company of others, one would be left to her own devices—perhaps to think, or read, or stare into space and dream of Mr. Darcy.
  5. Mr. Darcy!
  6. More often than not, there was no makeup to be applied. Unless one was a prostitute or mistress—two positions one would do best to avoid. Just imagine, your natural beauty would actually be appreciated.
  7. No Snookie!
  8. One would speak with a posh British accent, which everyone knows makes you sound much more highbrow, even when murmuring words such as “crikey,” “bloody hell,” and “bollocks.” Of course, one would be required to murmur such words within the confines of one’s own room, in a very faint whisper, and completely alone. But even so, one’s newly acquired accent would be smashing, indeed!
  9. The confinement period required of all pregnant women could be used as a sort of BFF get together—minus the martinis, club music, and beer goggles.
  10. Mr. Darcy!
To celebrate the Regency woman, one gentle reader will walk away with all four books in my Regency Rogues series. Simply comment below and you’re automatically entered to win!
Desire, danger, intrigue, and steamy seduction unite a sexy spymaster and an intrepid bluestocking as Stefanie Sloane’s luscious new series continues.
Possessed of a brilliant mind and a love for puzzles, Dashiell Matthews, Viscount Carrington, is a crucial member of the elite Young Corinthians spy league. Assuming the fa├žade of an addle-brained Adonis, he hunts for a notorious London murderer known as the Bishop. When fate causes him to cross paths with Miss Elena Barnes, Dash discovers an enigma that will prove delightfully intoxicating to unravel: a voluptuous beauty as intelligent as she is fearless.
Only the lure of a collection of rare books bequeathed to her family by Dash’s late father could tempt Elena from her cozy rural life to the crush and vanity of London. But if Elena finds his lordship to be the most impossibly beautiful man she’s ever seen, he also seems to be the stupidest. Which made her body’s shameless response to his masterful seduction all the more unfathomable. Yet when she discovers Dash’s mission to track the dangerous Bishop, she willingly risks everything—her trust, her heart, her very life—to join him.
Thank you Stefanie for being my guest today, and BIG congrats on being a double RITA nominee for The Devil in Disguise which has been nominated in both the Best First Book and Best Regency Historical Romance!! (I think it deserves an exclamation mark for each nomination, don't you?)  Imagine getting a phone call from author Lorraine Heath telling you the good news?  That alone is a reward in and of itself!!! (and another one for Lorraine Heath, LOL).
If you'd like to learn more about Historical Romance author Stefanie Sloane and the books she writes you can find her at her website www.stefaniesloane.com, Facebook, Twitter,  & Goodreads.  I just love the titles of her books.  For instance the fifth book in the series is called The Scoundrel Takes a Bride (Oct 2012), and the sixth, and I think my favorite is, The Wicked Widow Meets Her Match.  Doesn't that sound like so much fun?  And I also loved learning about the origins of the Young Corinthians, the organization her characters are associated with.
To celebrate the release of the fourth book in her Regency Rogues series, The Saint Who Stole My Heart, Stefanie has very generously offered to giveaway ALL four of the books in the series (The Devil in Disguise, The Angel in My Arms, The Sinner Who Seduced Me, & The Saint Who Stole My Heart), in print to one extremely lucky Musings follower.  Here's how you can enter to win...
Guest Author & Giveaway: Shona Husk featuring Kiss of the Goblin Prince
Thursday, April 26
You all know I don't read much paranormal romance.  I'm burned out, and I never even really got into it like a lot of romance readers are.  I guess it's just not my thing....that is unless you are talking about Shona Husk's Shadowland series.   It's an exceptional exception.
I read the first book in the series, The Goblin King, last year and absolutely loved it!  I loved it so much that I included it into my list of Favorite Reads of 2011.  Needless to say, I've been impatiently waiting for the second book, Kiss of the Goblin Prince, ever since :)
My wait is almost over, and to make it even better Shona Husk is my guest today to share her tortured Prince of a hero with us, with an added bonus of an exclusive excerpt.  Enjoy!
~~~***~~~

Letting go of the past

Everyone makes mistakes that come back and haunt them latter. But what if that mistake happened thousands of years ago? The idea that past lives could leave an imprint on the present life is a concept that I was introduced to as a child by Katherine Kerr in her Deverry series (I love those books). Many religions also have a similar belief and it’s something that I find very interesting. When writing the Shadowlands series it seemed natural to include this belief and to see what effect the curse would have on those who survived and those that didn’t.

The heroes of the Shadowlands series are cursed Celts, and their lives can be broken into three distinct phases: before the curse, the nearly two thousand years spent cursed and after the curse. Not all of the cursed men survived, those that died have lived other lives since the curse unaware of their past but still feeling the effects. For those that did survive they have to live with the knowledge of everything they’ve done to survive.

When I introduced Dai as a character in The Goblin King I knew he had a dark secret and I knew in his book it would come back, not to bite him, but for him to fix. He gets the chance that many would love to have, to make amends and put things right.

But coming to grips and confronting the things that happened centuries ago is never easy. He carries the weight of Roman slavery and then the goblin curse, both of which have left their mark physically and mentally. He has grown used to holding onto the hate of his Roman master.

As a hero Dai is damaged and yet he has qualities that resonate as heroic: he’s knowledgeable, honorable and will do anything to protect his family—even if that means returning to the Shadowlands and risking death.

It’s through his relationship with Amanda that he finds the courage to start shedding the past. And while he can save himself and Amanda from a bitter and lonely future, he can’t save everyone and that’s a lesson he has to learn. People have to fix their own mistakes, in this life or the next.

The Man of Her Dreams…

He is like a prince in a fairy tale: tall, outrageously handsome, and way too dark for her own good. Amanda has been hurt before, though. And with her daughter's illness, the last thing she needs right now is a man. But the power of Dai King is hard to resist. And when he threads his hands through her hair and pulls her in for a kiss, there is no denying it feels achingly right.

In a Land of Nightmares…

After being trapped in the Shadowlands for centuries with the goblin horde a constant threat, Dai revels in his newfound freedom back in the human realm. But even with the centuries of magic he's accumulated, he still doesn't know how to heal Amanda's daughter—and it breaks his heart. Yet for the woman he loves, he'd risk anything...including a return to the Shadowlands.

Enjoy the special excerpt just for Musings readers!

Thank you so much to Shona for being my guest today!  I'm so excited to read Dai's story!!!  And it's only a few short days to release day, woo hoo :)  I was even more excited during a recent Amazon perusal that the next book in the series is already up for pre-order.  The third book in this series is For the Love of a Goblin Warrior.  The bad news is, that it doesn't come out until January 2013 :(

If you'd like to learn more about Shona Husk and the her heroes who have a heart of gold--sometimes literally, you can find her at her website www.shonahusk.com, Facebook, and Twitter.  As well as Winkgirls Blog, and Darkside Downunder blog Make sure you chec out the FREE prequel to The Goblin King, The Summons.  It does a fantastic job of leading into the first book and in my opinion really is a must companion read.

To celebrate the release of the second book in the Shadowlands series, Kiss of the Goblin Prince, Shona's publishers Sourcebooks Casablanca would like to giveaway a print copy of the book to one lucky Musings follower.  Here's how you can enter to win...

Ways to earn entries:
  • Mandatory:  How hard is it for you to let go of past mistakes, and have you tried to help someone, only to learn that it was all for naught?  (good for 1 entry)

Review: Highland Destiny by Laura Hunsaker

Title: Highland Destiny*

Series:NA
Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: New Concepts Publishing
Format:Paperback, E-Book
Date/Year:  November 2010

*This book was won from the blog Sam’s Awesomeness.

Summary from the publisher:

Mackenzie Stewart’s in Scotland for a much-needed vacation. During the castle tour, Mackenzie becomes completely enamored with a painting of one of the previous lairds. Two gentlemen come up behind her and, begging her pardon, they kidnap her, dragging her through time.

The men are sorcerers attempting to end a feud that has plagued their lands for years. Their patron has begun to dabble in the black arts, and between his irrational thirst for power, and his dark secret, the sorcerers are frightened. They believe Mackenzie can break the Stewart curse. They try to convince her to play along with their crazy scheme: marriage to the evil John Campbell.

Before Mackenzie can protest, her carriage is halted and the door thrown open. For a split-second she is arrested by the same beautiful piercing blue eyes that belonged in an oil painting.

Mackenzie then finds herself the victim of a second kidnapping!

Her new captor, however, does nothing but tempt her body and her temper. Believing her to in fact be the betrothed of his mortal enemy the Campbell, Connor originally sets out to capture his enemy’s betrothed. He never thought he would be so attracted to her that he’d want to keep her.

My Musings:

I was a little scared to start this book because I “know” Laura through Goodreads.  I have been wanting to read her book for a while but I couldn’t stop myself from wondering what I would say if I hated it.  I put off starting this book for a couple weeks because of that, eventually I realized how stupid that was and started reading.

Mackenzie is your average American girl.  She’s in her early 20’s and this is her first trip outside the US.  I liked that she had normal and realistic reactions.  She was confused by the clothing of the past, she hated the way women were treated, and she was a little scared of the food, all seemed like perfectly appropriate reactions to me.  Mackenzie is young so she is a bit gullible and a little naive but she handles herself very well and comes across as charming and endearing.  Looking back, I realize that Mackenzie reminded me of MacKayla from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, I felt an instant connection to her and a little protective of her because of that.

I adore Connor.  He had the typical highlander characteristics of being a strong warrior, protective, and sexy but he had other qualities which surprised me.  He had a really sweet and nurturing nature that made him so lovable.  He was absolutely perfect for Mackenzie.  I liked them both so much that I found myself rooting for them to find a way to be together.  I had no idea how their happy ending was going to work out but I wanted to see it unfold.

I had some issues with the execution and pace of the story.  I thought the kidnapping/time travel scene at the beginning was awkward.  It came across as too clinical and detached for me.  Mackenzie’s reaction was off too, she was too accepting and that didn’t strike me as a normal reaction.  Luckily, the first kidnapping scene is only a couple pages long so I didn’t have to dwell in that very long.  Near the end, the transition from dream prophecies to reality was repetitive and I ended up skimming the dreams whenever they came up.  The end was also rushed, so much happened so quickly that I had to go back and read paragraphs multiple times to make sure I caught it all.

The romance was great but I did have a couple issues with the telling of their story.  Still, it’s a good book and Laura should be very proud of it.  If I ever have the chance to read another of her books I will do it.

Review: A Wild Night's Bride by Victoria Vane

Title:  A Wild Night's Bride*

Genre: Historical Romance

Summary from the publisher:

WITH THE DEVIL IN CHARGE...THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY... What happens when a struggling actress and a grieving widower come together in a night of unbridled debauchery orchestrated by a bored and machinating rake?

She’s a lonely lady down on her luck...
Phoebe Scott, alias Kitty Willis, is a struggling Covent Garden actress with a bruised heart and a closely guarded secret.

He’s steadfast and eminently respectable
Sir Edward Chambers, Ned to his intimates, is guilt-ridden over his beloved wife’s death and avowed to live out a rustic and mundane life … of celibacy.

With the devil in charge — there will surely be hell to pay.Devil in disguise, Viscount Ludovic DeVere, is determined to return his best friend, Ned, to the land of the living. His meddling machinations result in a night of mind blowing passion after which “dull dog Ned” awakes to find himself in the King of England’s bed!

 My Musings:

Ned has come to London for the first time since his wife’s death.  He’s still dealing with his guilt over her death and grieving her.   He’s in London because he has to move forward for his daughter’s sake.  She’ll soon be having her first season and he needs to find a house for them during the season.  He meets up with his old friend DeVere while he’s in the city.

DeVere is always seeking entertainment and makes it his mission to add some excitement to Ned’s life.  DeVere is determined to get Ned to wake up and enjoy life again.  The plan is to take Ned to a Feast of Venus which will feature sensuous delights and ceremonial fertility rites.  He’s sure this will get Ned’s blood pumping.

Phoebe is trying to make it as an actress.  She’s tried to do it on her own for years and has now accepted that she can’t do it without a benefactor.  The more powerful the benefactor, the better the roles on stage.   On the advice of a friend she decides to examine her possible choices at the Feast of Venus.   All three meet at the party and an impossible dare turns into a midnight adventure.

Everything in this novella is flamboyant and over the top.  It all starts with the main characters.  They don’t come across as real people, their stereotypical personalities didn’t make them believable.  The dialogues are also extravagant and flashy.  The theatrical qualities of the book are not a negative, it’s all setting up a story that’s clearly an ostentatious fantasy.

I was able to separate myself from reality and enjoy the story...until the romance started to develop.  I had no connection with the characters so I didn’t feel the chemistry between Ned and Phoebe.  It didn’t worry me too much since I was expecting nothing more than a wild sexual romp between them.  That’s not what I got.  The sex scenes were a little bland when compared to the imagery that was so well done with the rest of the book.  I was disappointed by that.  When they woke up the following morning the story took a dramatic twist.  Suddenly, Ned and Phoebe were fairly normal people trying to have a relationship.  I had bought into the make-believe fantasy of their wild night so much that when it was over, and Phoebe and Ned transitioned into a romantic couple, I couldn’t make the switch with them.  It was too much and too fast a leap for me.  By the end of the story I was actively disliking them.  Overall, the book was different from anything else I’ve read, but the end left me disappointed.

Ratings:

Overall: 2.75
Sensuality level: 3.25
(Surprisingly, the sex scenes were pretty sedate.)

Review: Lover Reborn by J.R. Ward

Title: Lover Reborn*
Author:  J.R. Ward
Series: Black Daggar Brotherhood #10
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: NAL/Penguin
Format: Hardcover, E-book
Date/Year:  March 27, 2012
Reviewed by: Andrea

*This book was won by the reviewer on the blog, Read Our Lips.

Summary from the publisher:

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward’s novels of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continue as a vampire warrior crosses the line between life and death…and ventures into an erotic world of dark dreams and darker desires.

Ever since the death of his shellan, Tohrment has been unrecognizable from the vampire leader he once was. Physically emaciated and heartbroken beyond despair, he has been brought back to the Brotherhood by a self-serving fallen angel. Now, fighting once again with ruthless vengeance, he is unprepared to face a new kind of tragedy.

When Tohr begins to see his beloved in his dreams—trapped in a cold, isolated netherworld far from the peace and tranquillity of the Fade—he turns to the angel in hopes of saving the one he has lost. But because Lassiter tells him he must learn to love another to free his former mate, Tohr knows they are all doomed....

Except then a female with a shadowed history begins to get through to him. Against the backdrop of the raging war with the lessers, and with a new clan of vampires vying for the Blind King’s throne, Tohr struggles between the buried past and a very hot, passion-filled future…but can his heart let go and set all of them free?

My Musings:

J.R. Ward continues to amaze me with her creativity and talent.  I always think I’m going to be let down because the new book can’t possibly be as good as the last one.  I’m wrong every single time.

Lover Reborn
is the story of Tohrment.  I’ve known him and loved him for years.  In the beginning of the series Tohr and his shellan, Wellslie, were the only couple.  She set the bar for all the other shellans.  When Wellslie was murdered in Lover Awakened my heart broke for Tohr.  Tohr was so ravaged by her death that he disappeared for a few books but was eventually brought back, barely alive, by Lassiter.   The grief Tohr is living with is overwhelming.   Ward managed to convey his pain so well that it felt like my heart was breaking with him.

No’One is Xhex’s mother.  She was rescued by Tohr while pregnant with Xhex and then after giving birth she took Tohr’s dagger and killed herself.  She reappeared as a servant to the Scribe Virgin when Payne came into the series.  No’One has been in the background for a while but I never felt like I knew her.  I was surprised at how much that didn’t change with Lover Reborn.  She was a huge part of the book but I still didn’t have a good sense of who she was and that struck me as odd throughout the book.  I was also annoyed by her constantly self-deprecating attitude.  By the end I understood why she was that way, but it still irritated me.  I hope she gains a personality in subsequent books.

I was surprised at how big a role Xhex and John Matthew had in this book.  I found it refreshing that they didn’t have an easy HEA.  In real life, a wedding isn’t the gateway where an idyllic HEA begins, making a marriage work is difficult.  It was nice to see that reflected in a series where everyone seems to have seamless matings.  I liked that Xhex and John had some tough issues to work out and that they really struggled with it.

Once again we get to watch the train-wreck that is Qhuinn and Blay.  I love these guys but it’s time for someone to make a move.  Qhuinn is miserable, I have no idea what Blay is thinking and Saxton is just along for the ride I guess.  Something has to give because they cannot continue living with the strain of such an uncomfortable relationship.  This is heart wrenching and painful to read, at this point I’m ready to beg for an end to it.

I’m not sure how I feel about the Band of Bastards.  I hate what they’re doing but I see glimpses of good in Xcor and Throe.  I’ll reserve judgement on them until I get to know them a little better.  I’m still holding onto a little hope for their eventual redemption and hopefully Layla will be a part of that, a two birds one stone kind of thing.  Layla is a great person and she deserves more than she currently has.

Other stray thoughts running through my brain are:  I’m starting to like Lassiter and want to see more of him.  I can’t believe I forgot how funny the brothers are, I was constantly laughing while reading.  On a more serious note, I was surprised at how emotional and moving this book was.  I went from laughing, to crying, to angry, and then back to happy so many times throughout the book.  It was an emotional roller coaster and I’m sad that it’s over, I didn’t want it to end.   I hear Blay and Quinn’s book is next, I can’t wait to read it!

Overall: 4.75 (I never got to the point of liking No’One and thought the romance between her and Tohr was lacking.)

Review: The Darkest Seduction by Gena Showalter

Title: The Darkest Seduction*
Author: Gena Showalter
Series: Lords of the Underworld #9
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher:  HQN
Format: Paperback, E-Book
Date/Year:  February 2012
Reviewed by: Andrea

*This book was won from Literal Addiction Paranormal Book club

Summary from the publisher:

At long last, New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter unveils the story of Paris, the darkest and most tormented Lord of the Underworld….

Possessed by the demon of Promiscuity, immortal warrior Paris is irresistibly seductive—but his potent allure comes at a terrible price. Every night he must bed someone new, or weaken and die. And the woman he craves above all others is the one woman he'd thought was forever beyond his reach…until now. Newly possessed by the demon of Wrath, Sienna Blackstone is racked by a ruthless need to punish those around her. Yet in Paris's arms, the vulnerable beauty finds soul-searing passion and incredible peace. Until a blood feud between ancient enemies heats up.Will the battle against gods, angels and creatures of the night bind them eternally—or tear them apart?

My Musings:

Anyone familiar with this series knows that Gena generally gives us one main story, and then there will be 3 or 4 completely separate side stories thrown in throughout the book.  I’ll deal with each story on its own.  I also have to be rather vague in details in order to avoid spoilers.   This book has some major changes which will alter the course of the entire series and I don’t want to ruin the surprise for anyone.

I’ll start with the main story which is Paris and Sienna.  Paris is self-destructing, he has become violent, selfish and is out of control.  There is a darkness growing inside him that is threatening to take over and destroy him.  His only focus is killing hunters and finding Sienna.  He’s not even sure what he’ll do with her once he finds her but he knows he needs to find her.

Sienna has changed since her death.  She was a hunter but now Cronus has made her the keeper of Wrath which has given her first hand experience in the struggle the Lords deal with every day.  Now that she knows the truth about the origins of the Lords and their demons, she feels awful about trying to kill Paris.  She also has an irresistible urge to find Paris even though she believes he must hate her.

Sienna has been trapped in the Realm of Blood and Shadows by Cronus.  Paris knows where she is but can’t see her now that she is dead.  He has to enlist the help of some friends.  We meet Viola, the keeper of Narcissism.  She enters the lives of the Lords, which is hilarious but very disruptive to them.   Zacharel has been ordered by Lysander to help Paris find Sienna and then convince her to leave Paris and return with Zacharel to heaven.  William the Ever Randy is also tagging along to offer his help (William-style help which is mostly painful and only sometimes helpful but always funny).  When Paris and Sienna are finally reunited it makes for a very interesting romance.  Basically they tried to kill each other the last time they met and Sienna ended up dying.  How do you build a relationship and trust from that?!  Then the other Lords get involved with them.  They can’t see Sienna and they definitely don’t trust her so they try to break them apart.   It’s a convoluted mess of a romance but they are so good together.  Big shock here, the sex is great too :)

Ok, now for the side stories taking place:

While all that is going on, Kane is being held hostage in hell by female minions wanting to make baby demons with him.  He is rescued by the horsemen of Apocolypse but we’re left hanging on what they intend to do with Kane now that they have him.

The war between Cronus and Rhea is heating up.  Galen is still leading the hunters and has decided to use Legion and Ashlyn in order to draw out the lords.

Ashlyn and Maddox became the proud parents of adorable little demon twins.  This led to some great scenes with William, and I love him even more now.

Throughout the entire book Zacharel has been punished for a crime we’re unaware of. In the epilogue we find out that in order to pay for his past sins he must lead an army of fallen warrior angels.

This book answered some questions but raised many more.  Now that there has been such a major change in the story, what is going to happen with the Lords?  What’s going on with Kane?  Am I ever going to get books about Torin or William?  Then there is Zacharel, I can’t wait to get my hands on that book when it comes out.

If you’re a fan of this series this one is a must read book.  If you’re new to the series you need to start at the beginning and work your way up to this one, it’s worth it.

I freaking love this series!!!!

Ratings:

Overall: 3.5 (It could have been higher but there was just so much going on at once.  It might have been better to focus more on Paris and Sienna and leave some other side stories for other books.)

Review: Kiss of Pride by Sandra Hill

Summary from the publisher:

SOME MEN ARE TOO BAD TO BE TRUE...

Is he really a Viking with a vampire’s bit? An angel with the body of a thunder god? A lone wolf with love on his mind? Alexandra Kelly, his prey, thinks Vikar Sigurdsson is either flat-out crazy or he’s trying to maneuver her into his bed--which is hardly where a professional reporter should conduct an interview, tempting as that prospect might be.

SOME MEN ARE TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE...

Until Vikar does something a teensy bit unexpected, and Alex begins to wonder whether her mystery man could really be everything he says he is: a Viking Vampire Angel on a thousand-year-long mission with his pack of sinful brothers—and a man who’s finally found the woman of his dreams. By then, Vikar is already wrapping his chiseled arms around Alex’s body...and sinking his wicked fangs right into her neck. If this is sin, why does it feel so good?

My Musings:

The last few years have been tough for Alex.  Two years ago her husband and daughter were murdered.  Since then she has been living one day at a time waiting for the day the murderers are brought to justice.  Luckily her boss is also a close friend and, for the most part, he has been taking it easy on her.  One day he has had enough of her depression and tells her she needs to start living again.  He has the perfect assignment to help with that.  She is to go to Transylvania, Pennsylvania and interview a “vampire” that is renovating a hotel.

Vikar is actually a viking vampire angel, AKA vangel.   He is exactly what I expect in a 1000 year old Viking, which is both domineering and condescending.  Those qualities make it all the better when he is brought to his knees by Alex.

This is my extremely simplified explanation of Vikar’s world:

Lucifer had his army of vampires, Lucipires, and Michael the Archangel decided he needed his own army of vampires, hence the birth of the vangels.  The lucipires tempt sinners in order to get more souls in hell and the vangels try to save those souls.

Before I get into my thoughts on the book I have to confess something, I avoid Christian themed books.  They generally require belief and at least general knowledge in a base theology which I don’t subscribe to.  That makes them difficult for me to enjoy.  I have read a lot of fallen angel types of books and this has never been an issue for me until this one.  I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up this book.  All the religion talk was a turn off for me and something I struggled with throughout the story.

The book begins with a prologue which explains the birth of the lucipires and vangels in detail.  It’s dry reading and pretty religious.  I made it to page 12 and was seriously considering giving up on it.  I pushed on, despite my initial reaction, and I’m glad I kept reading.  Once I reached the present day story and got to know the world in which Vikar lived, I was hooked.

The romance between Alex and Vikar was believable and entertaining.  Alex is a non-believer and Vikar is a vangel so that created a few issues.  Vikar gets punished when he commits sins, no cursing or premarital sex for vangels.  Watching Alex and Vikar walk the fine line of not having actual sex and limiting themselves to near-sex was entertaining and creative.  They also have inner dialogues with themselves which were funny.  It took a while for me to get the author’s humor, it’s quirky and a little corny but I enjoyed it.

I was surprised at how interested I was in the war between the lucipires and the vangels.  I liked that aspect of the book just as much as the romance.  I loved the interactions between Vikar and his brothers as well as the vangels working under them.  It had a frat house vibe with everyone picking one each other and pulling pranks. My only complaint about the storyline is that it got a bit monotonous in the end due to the romance stalling out and the battles taking over.  I can overlook that though because the rest of the story was so good.

This wasn’t an easy book for me rate.  I absolutely loved the characters, the romance and the war but the constant talk about sins and religion was irritating and at times it came across as preachy.  It’s difficult for me to reconcile the two in order to come up with an overall rating for the book.  Hill has an interesting take on a common paranormal theme.  If you like Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series or Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series you might like this one, give it a try.  I figure if I could like it despite my aversion to the religion, then most readers who enjoy this genre will probably love it.

Monday's Muse

Monday, April 23

Sorry, but the image containing the Monday's Muse has been removed from this blog so as not to violate any copyright issues.  Thanks for your understanding!

I have to admit, I'm feeling utterly boring and uninteresting today, and I have nothing to say except for a bunch of blah, blah, blah.  I'm not feeling down or depressed or anything, which is almost worse I think.  I think I've got a touch of ennui...or something like it.  Maybe it's just a bad case of Mondayitis.

Hmmm...what to share, I've been enjoying all of the posts about the RT convention throughout the blogosphere, which I dearly wished I would have been able to attend.  Is anyone hear going to Lori Foster's event which is coming up soon?  I've heard that one is really great because it is on the smaller side, but by the time I remembered about it all of the tickets were sold out :(   After that, I'm sorry to say that I've got nothin'.

So since I'm so blah today, what exciting or somewhat interesting news do you have to share?  I'm thinking I should just go back to bed, and indulge in some Mondayitis-ness, with a good book of course :)  Oh how I wish that were a possibility, hence our Muse, LOL.

p.s. I finished The Black Hawk, and while there isn't anything wrong with the book, I just don't think Joanna Bourne's books are for me.   I've moved on to greener pastures, i.e. Undone by Lila DiPasqua which was released on Saturday 4/21!  And it has a commoner hero, which you know I love!!!

This week at Seductive Musings:
  • Tuesday:  I'll have reviews for you including a review for Sandra Hill's Kiss of Pride.
  • Wednesday:  I'll have a few more reviews for you
  • Thursday:  Paranormal Romance author Shona Husk will be my guest to talk about her upcoming May 1st release of Kiss of the Goblin Prince.  I can't wait!
  • Friday:  Historical Romance author Stefanie Sloane will stop by on her blog tour for hew new book that is out this week, The Saint Who Stole My Heart.  A Rogue that's a Saint?  This should be good :)
  • Tempting Trailer: Since Linda Lael Miller has a new release this week, McKettrick's Heart, I thought it would be fitting to feature one of the "behind the scenes" to her cover shoots as our Tempting Trailer this week.  And, oh my goodness these cowboys are....very tempting.

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors will new releases this week, especially Musings authors Lora Leigh, Lila DiPasqua, and Stefanie Sloane!

Seductive Saturday: The Duke's Obsession Bundle

Saturday, April 21

Grace Burrowes is one of my favorite "new" authors.  She also wrote on of my favorite romances of 2011, Lady Sophie's Christmas Wish (which just won an RT award).  So when I saw this bundle of her first three books, put together to buy for only $4.99 for all three....I just had to share it with you :)

If you've not read her books before, I highly recommend them, and to get three books for less than you would pay for one of them.....that's a steal.  It should almost be illegal, but I'm glad it's not, LOL.

Did you find any good book deals this week you'd like to share?  I'd love to know about them if you did.

Fun Friday: The Man Chest, The Almost Kiss, or The Dress?

Friday, April 20

Yesterday I revealed some new book covers that I designed, but today I'd like to talk about some covers for some upcoming releases.  All are STUNNING for one reason or another.  I have book cover envy when I look at them :)

For the past couple of years now "beautiful dress" covers have been all the rage, then there is the always popular romantic couple with an "almost kiss", or seductive gaze, and then we have what seems to be a newer trend....the man solo covers, almost always with a little (or a lot) of chest showing.

My questions to you are:
  • which type of cover do you prefer...the man chest, the almost kiss, or the dress? and why? (excluding the Paul Marron factor, LOL)
  • does it matter to you what sub-genre of romance has a certain type of cover?  For instance, does "the dress" cover work for you as a contemporary romance (maybe that would be all about the shoes, LOL)?  In Urban Fantasy "the dress" equivalent are "the leather pants".

I've Been Moonlighting...

Thursday, April 19

It's confession time.  I've been moonlighting a bit, outside of blogging.  It's not that I've really kept it a secret, but I've not really come out and made it completely public either. But I think it's time.

You see, I've had a long love of art and even studied art, photography and art history in college. However, you can't really make a living at that, or at least not very many people can...of course this was many moons ago (many).  But during the second half of last year I saw that many of the authors that I love to read were going to start self publishing their books, and to my mind there were only a handful of freelance Book Cover Artists out there, so I decided to begin offering design services, more than just the ads on this blog.

I love beautiful book covers, and some of the covers I saw out there made me cringe.  I knew I could create something better, so I started Seductive Designs which was officially open for business at the beginning of this year.  I've had some of the pre-designed covers that are for sale on the right sidebar here at Seductive Musings for a while now.  I don't know if you've noticed them or not.  And now that some of the covers that have been commissioned by authors that I've designed them for have been revealed by the authors, I thought it was time to share this new venture with all of you.  So here's my secret passion....two of my most recent book covers:

This new venture is partly me being able to express my artistic side that I put on hold for a while, which also just happens to have the added bonus of earning some much needed extra $$$.  They say to follow your passion, and in having Seductive Designs AND Seductive Musings I am able to do exactly that.

So what does this mean for Seductive Musings?  As of right now, not too much.  Ultimately, it will depend on how much art work and/or design services are commissioned.  I do know that it will mean that I will be more selective on the number of guest authors that I have on the blog, and will probably mean that I will be looking for one or two new book reviewers.  Not necessarily because my focus will be elsewhere, but because the blog has been receiving more review requests and I have to plan ahead.  I had planned to do both this year anyways regardless of how Seductive Designs does because I wanted to have more of ME on the blog in 2012, and not just giveaways or reviews.

I still love talking about romance books, that will never change, so don't expect me to be making any announcements any time soon that I am going to quit blogging.  I don't foresee that happening. You may just see a few covers on books that I've designed :)  With full disclosure of course in the event one of those books is reviewed at Seductive Musings.

So there it is in all of it's book cover goodness :)

Giveaway: No Longer a Gentleman & The Rake by Mary Jo Putney

Wednesday, April 18

So, we have a little change in plans for today.  Originally author Lila DiPasqua was scheduled to be my guest today, but due to unforeseen circumstances we've had to reschedule.  I'll let you know when I have a new date.  In the meantime I have something equally tempting :)

Historical Romance author Mary Jo Putney has two newly released books out within weeks of each other.  No Longer a Gentleman, the fourth book in her Lost Lords series, which releases on April 24th, and a re-released older book, RITA award winning novel, The Rake, which came out March 27th.

To celebrate, BookTrib and Surrounding Flowers is giving away three months of Romantic Indulgence  (books & the most lovely flowers).  Who wouldn't want that?  To enter that giveaway to win you can click on the banner to the right, or click here and follow the instructions.

But that's not all!  They also offered to giveaway a print copy of each of Ms. Putney's new books, No Longer a Gentleman, and The Rake to followers of Seductive Musings, so I've decided to select two different winners who will each receive one book. That is indeed a Romantic Indulgence!  Here's a little bit about the books you can win:

Grey Sommers, Lord Wyndham, never met a predicament he couldn’t charm his way out of. Then a tryst with a government official’s wife during a bit of casual espionage in France condemns him a decade in a dungeon, leaving him a shadow of his former self. Yet his greatest challenge may be the enigmatic spy sent to free his body—the only woman who might heal his soul.

Half English and half French, Cassie Fox lost everything in the chaos of revolution, leaving only a determination to help destroy Napoleon’s empire through her perilous calling. Rescuing Grey is merely one more mission.  She hadn’t counted on a man with the stark beauty of a ravaged angel, whose desperate courage and vulnerability touch her frozen heart as no one ever has.  With Grey, she can become the passionate woman she has long denied.  But a spy and a lord are divided by an impassable gulf even if they manage to survive one last, terrifying mission….

The Rake

Known as “the despair of the Davenports,” Reginald Davenport lived a reckless, rakish life while waiting for his hated uncle to die and leave Reggie an earldom.  Then the rightful heir claims the title and property and offers Reggie one last chance: Strickland, the estate where he was born and the site of his greatest joys and sorrows. Reggie returns to Strickland, resolving to build a healthier, more honorable life—if he can.

The Reformer

Young Alys Weston fled her home in despair, vowing never to trust another man.  Over the years, she’s built a good life with a foster family and a position as steward of Strickland.  She uses her skills to help her people, and her initials to convince the elderly earl who owned the state that she’s male.

Then the new owner appears in all his dangerous masculinity and threatens everything Alys holds dear.  Good resolutions crumble when two passionate, complicated people are drawn together despite their best judgment.  Can love lead to redemption and trust?   Or is it too late?
