Summary from the publisher:
THE SWEETEST TEMPTATION…
Black ops agent Solomon Judah awakens caged and bound in a twisted zoo where otherworlders are the main attraction. Vika Lukas, the owner’s daughter, is tasked with Solo’s care and feeding. The monster inside him yearns to kill her on sight, even though she holds the key to his escape. But the human side of him realizes the beautiful deaf girl is more than she seems—she’s his.
THE ULTIMATE PRICE…
Vika endures the captives’ taunts and loathing, hoping to keep them alive even if she can’t free them. Only, Solo is different—he protects her. But as hostility turns to forbidden romance, his feelings for her will be used against him…and he’ll be put to a killer test.
The book begins with a glimpse into the life of Vika. It’s a painful and horrific event in her past that shapes the woman she is today. Within 2 pages I had connected with her and felt compassion for her. Vika is so alone. She lives in the confines of a barbaric, inhuman circus. The circus attractions are otherworlders (aliens) that have been captured and caged. The owner of the circus is Vika’s father. He is evil, abusive, and cruel to everyone, but most especially to Vika.
Solo is one of three Otherworld Assassins, a select group of otherworlders trained specifically for covert operations. He is not one of the nice, pretty varieties of otherworlders. One of his special abilities is to turn into a monster and go into uncontrollable rages when angry. That sounds so much worse than it really is. I was reminded of Beauty and the Beast when it came to Vika and Solo. He is actually sweet, loving, and very loyal. Anyway, Solo is sent on a mission to recover a captured AIR (Alien Investigation and Retrieval for those of you not familiar with the Alien Huntress series) agent. Something goes terribly wrong and Solo is captured and sold into the circus Vika’s father owns. Vika becomes his caretaker.
Solo and Vika are drawn to each other. Solo sees behind the wall Vika has built around herself. He tries to protect her from the abuse of her father and the taunts of the caged otherworlders. Vika feels the same urge to protect Solo though she risks harm to herself by doing so. They soon must answer the question, “Is love and freedom worth the risk of death to not only themselves, but everyone who counts on them?”
I was surprised at how different this book was from the Alien Huntress series. It has its base in Alien Huntress but clearly stands on its own. I enjoyed the world, a circus turned evil by the performers’ dependency on dark magic, and the characters involved with it. I did get a bit irritated at how long it took Vika to make a move toward freedom. I’m not sure how Solo maintained his patience with her as long as he did. Their romance was good, but it was overshadowed by the worldbuilding. As the first book in the series, it was a nice balance. This series is going to be good. I’m intrigued by the remaining Otherworld Assassins and excited to see what comes next.
