Friday Fun: Michele's Naughty Sleepover Weekend

Friday, March 1

One of the things I love most about the erotic romance community is how so many of its authors go out of their way to make themselves available to their readers in fun social events. Sometimes it seems like there are more events than there are available times to attend, but part of the fun is picking and choosing which ones rate going that extra mile to hang out with your favorite writers and fellow lovers of erotic romance.

The Naughty Sleepover event was presented on February 22 -24 in San Antonio by the Sassy Seven Authors, a group of erotic romance writers who are not only working together to cross-promote each others’ books but have also co-written a new book together, appropriately titled Naughty Sleepover. This is the first year they’ve hosted the Naughty Sleepover, but based on the turnout and enjoyment of the participants, it’s got a great chance of becoming an annual event.

The Sassy Seven Authors in attendance were Regina Carlysle, Samantha Cayto, Cerise Deland, Desiree Holt, Allie Standifer, and Brenna Zinn. (Due to a career opportunity and cross-country move, Nicole Austin was not able to attend.) In addition to our hostesses, there were also several other authors who came out to have fun with us readers. Although I didn’t get to meet every one of them, it was great to see so many that I recognized from last fall’s Romanticon (Cara Carnes, Cassandra Carr, Sidney Bristol, Dalton Diaz, Laurann Dohner, Joey W. Hill) and finally get to meet and fangirl over those I’d only met from their books or on social media (Eden Bradley and Kallypso Masters - squee!)

The weekend’s fun started on Friday afternoon, when we all met up in the outer foyer of the Menger Hotel ballroom to greet the Sassy Seven and get to know all our fellow attendees. Each of the Sassy Seven got up and talked about their books and what inspired them to write, and the readers asked plenty of good questions, especially when a prize for the best question was at stake.

After everyone had a chance to have dinner on their own, we all returned to the ballroom for the Decadence Chocolate Experience, which was a wonderful buffet of all the delicious fruits and cakes that taste even better when dipped in a giant chocolate fountain. We had been directed to show up wearing our sexiest shoes, with a generous prize to the person whose footwear was the most outrageously hot. The winner was Eden Bradley, in her sky-high sparkly violet stilettos, but there were plenty of other women wearing shoes that were just as amazing (and impossible to walk in!). Friday night was also when we all got our first look at the two gorgeous male cover models - David Nieves and Cole Reily - who would be our eye candy for the weekend’s festivities.

Saturday started early with a continental breakfast buffet, and then a choice of fun morning games. Several groups went on the Naughty Sleepover Scavenger Hunt, where they had to find wacky or bizarre items from a significantly lengthy list and take a picture of each to bring back as proof. Surprisingly enough, the most difficult item to find was not “an alien” as you might expect. It was “shrimp playing a saxophone” and that item was found by the only group who successfully returned with pictures of all items on the list. (Congratulations, Laura and Sheila from Two Lips Reviews!)

Those of us not doing the scavenger hunt stayed in the ballroom for a series of naughty games with Allie Standifer and Brenda Zinn. The most memorable of these were the ball toss game (with a whole new take on what kind of balls and where they were being tossed!) and the Naughty Sleepover version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey (hint: the donkey was actually David, and it wasn’t a tail!).

After a great lunch with the Pink and Proud theme to raise money for a local breast cancer treatment center, a representative from Pure Romance showed us the latest in body products and adult toys to pamper and please both in and out of the bedroom. In addition to Pure Romance, there were other vendors in the ballroom foyer with various interesting items, including beauty products, print books by attending authors and a gentleman selling his handcrafted leather BDSM accessories and implements.

The main afternoon event on Saturday was one that none of us are likely to forget soon: a live demo presented by members of the local BDSM community. It’s one thing to read about activities like rope binding and sensation play in a book; it’s an entirely different matter to see such things demonstrated live by real people only a few feet away from you. Master Mike took the time to explain what he was doing, why he was doing it and why you (unless you have years of specialized medical training) should never ever try it at home. I was fortunate enough to have gotten a front row center seat and was captivated by his direct eye contact and commanding voice from the moment he began speaking, a reaction which I found both compelling and disconcerting.

Master Mike had the entire audience rapt with attention during the entire 2 hours he was on stage and you could have heard a pin drop during the sensation play portions of the demonstration. Afterward, he invited everyone to visit his dungeon later that evening. Although I wasn’t able to go with them, I talked to a few of the people who did go, and they said it was the experience of a lifetime.

Saturday’s dinner was a Mexican Fiesta buffet and then later we were entertained by The Men of T.E.B, a male revue from Austin. Think Magic Mike, only less flashy and more chair dances. I had a morning flight back to DC so I called it an early night and spent the rest of the evening trying to pack all my swag and purchases in my luggage. Thank goodness I had room for my three autographed and personalized books from Kallypso Masters!

Naughty Sleepover was a lot of crazy fun packed into a short weekend, and a rare opportunity to hang out with some of my very favorite writers. If you want an excuse to fly someplace warm in the winter and misbehave with other lovers of erotic romance, but you don’t want to spend a lot of money or you can’t get a lot of time off work, then the Naughty Sleepover weekend might be just the thing for you!

This sounds like a lot of fun! Maybe we need to plan an east coast reader weekend.

My FREE Kindle Quest

I've wanted a Kindle for what seems like forever, but haven't been able to afford it (and that's saying something since I can justify the cost of just about ANYTHING that I really want). I've tried winning one in one of the many giveaways that have taken place over the couple of years, but with no luck :( So I've decided to take matters in hand so to speak :) I've now decided that I am going to accumulate enough Swagbucks from my Swabucks searches to buy one...so in essence my new Kindle will be FREE...funded entirely by my internet searches done on Swagbucks. I'll keep you informed of the Great Kindle Quest below (in case you're interested....if not feel free to just skip over this part, but really who wouldn't be interested in a FREE Kindle?)
Goal: $119
Current Swagbucks Amazon Gift Card balance: $90.00
If you'd like to learn how you can earn Swagbucks and earn your own Amazon Gift Cards to buy books, a Kindle or other merchandise sold at Amazon contact me and I would be more than happy to tell you how I plan to go about it. (just so you know you can earn both Amazon.com and Amazon.ca gift cards on this rewards site)
