Guest Author & Giveaway: Broken by Rachel Hanna

Wednesday, April 3

I've been asked by both my brother and sister to raise their families should anything happen to them.  And of course I said yes.  I love them all dearly, yet the thought of that...brings tears to my eyes, and sends me into a panic.  Like the kind where it's kind of hard to breathe type of panic.  Because really, I don't even want to think of that eventuality let alone live it.  Not because I don't think I could step up to the plate and try to be what they needed, it's the thought of having to deal with that loss and still be strong for the little ones and try to guide them through such a life altering and difficult time.

So when I read about Rachel Hanna's newest story, that deals with a young woman, Bella, who faces that exact situation in Broken, I knew it would be an emotional read that I could connect with (not that I'm twenty-four...far from it, but still :).  Rachel is my guest today to share just a bit about Broken that I hope you will enjoy.

Welcome to Seductive Musings Rachel!  Broken is your newest New Adult contemporary romance. What was the hardest or most emotional scene for you to write and why?

The hardest scene for me to write was Bella explaining her sister Lori's death to her nephew Ethan. That was an emotional scene, and I wanted to do it justice but I've never had to explain death to a small child like that. That made it more challenging, but I tried to think about what I would say and how I would explain it.

“Sweetie, something happened today. To your Mommy…”

“Is she sick? Is she at the hospital?” Ethan asked cocking his head to the side.

“No, honey, she’s not. There was an accident. Ethan, your Mommy went up to heaven today to become an angel…” she said. She hoped her words were enough, but how could they be? How could her measly words ever be enough to explain that his beloved mother was gone forever?

“To heaven? When is she coming back?” he asked still not understanding the concept.

“She’s not, honey. But she will always be your guardian angel watching over you,” Bella said pushing a stray hair out of his eye and rubbing his cheek with her thumb.

“Where was her guardian angel? Why wasn’t her angel watching over her?” he asked with a tear rolling down his cheek. “That’s not fair!”

“I know it’s not, baby…” Bella said pulling him into her embrace and trying to hold back her own tears. She couldn’t remember ever crying as much as she had cried in the last twelve hours.

“I want Mommy to come home! Please come home, Mommy!” he kept sobbing and yelling into Bella’s shoulder.

Wow!  That had to be intense to write that.  Other than the scene with Bella and Ethan, what makes this such story such an emotional read?

Many things. First, just knowing Bella's history as a child is heart wrenching, but the death of her sister, learning to be a new mother and struggling with her own recent past decisions are all emotional hotpoints in the story.

What are five things Bella needs to know as a new mother?
  1. Of all the things she can provide Ethan, love is the most important.
  2. Keep reminders of Lori around for Ethan during his whole life.
  3. Be the most stable figure in Ethan's life.
  4. Stay involved in Ethan's schooling and life so that he knows he can always come to you.
  5. Be honest when he asks you questions about his mother and her past, but give information in an age appropriate way.

Definitely some good tips in there for anyone.  At twenty-four I don't know if I would have been ready to raise a child, especially a seven year old who just lost his mother who was your sister.  Then again, I don't think you would be ready for that situation at any age :(

When twenty-four year old Bella Clay experiences yet another major loss in her life, she is forced to come home and become a young, single mother to her seven year old nephew. No one in the small town of Madison Falls knows just how damaged she is, and they certainly don't know her dirty little secret about where she's been for the last two years.

Grant Brady is the local hunk who works as the elementary school PE and history teacher. When he takes an interest in helping Bella start over in Madison Falls, she tries to push him away afraid that he will find out her dark secrets. What she doesn't know is that Grant has a secret of his own.

Will love prevail or will one or both of them run for the hills out of fear?

Wow, what a setup! At least seven-year-olds can understand death, not that it isn't going to be tough.

This sounds good and angsty, so I'm sure I would like it. Best wishes on the release.

Very emotional scene! Death is such an abstract concept for children, it can be so hard to make them understand...
