Summary from the publisher:

In the latest eBook original novel in Ruthie Knox’s scorching-hot Camelot series, a no-strings fling looks an awful lot like falling in love—or flirting with disaster.

Fresh out of a fiasco of a marriage, Katie Clark has retreated to her hometown to start over. The new Katie is sophisticated, cavalier, and hell-bent on kicking butt at her job in her brother’s security firm. But on her first assignment—digging up the truth about the stalker threatening a world-famous singer-songwriter—Katie must endure the silent treatment from a stern but sexy partner who doesn’t want her help . . . or her company.

Sean Owens knows that if he opens his mouth around Katie, she’ll instantly remember him as the geeky kid who sat behind her in high school. Silence is golden, but he can’t keep quiet forever, not with Katie stampeding through their investigation. It’s time for Sean to step up and take control of the case, and his decade-old crush. If he can break through Katie’s newfound independence, they just might find they make a perfect team—on the road, on the job, and in bed.

Includes a special message from the editor, as well as excerpts from these Loveswept titles: How to Misbehave, Along Came Trouble, and About Last Night.

My Musings:

Flirting With Disaster is the third entry in Ruthie Knox’s new Camelot series, and the second full length novel. Its heroine is Katie Clark, the baby sister of Amber and Caleb, whose individual romances were featured in the previous two books. Katie’s only recently returned to Camelot from Alaska, where she’d been running an outdoor touring company until her high school sweetheart and ne’er-do-well husband had walked out on her, leaving nothing but debt and self-recrimination. She doesn’t really know what she wants to do with her life, but she knows she wants to do it on her own, if only to prove to her overprotective brother that she’s capable of taking care of herself. But her determination to be independent doesn’t keep her from taking a job with her brother’s security firm, which suits Caleb just fine as it means he can still keep an eye on her. Neither of them anticipates what will happen when Katie is assigned to work the same job as Sean, another Camelot native and former high school classmate who’d left town years before to make it big as the co-founder of a high tech company out in California. Caleb is happy to have a good guy he trusts to keep Katie safe on the job. Katie is pleasantly surprised to see Sean all grown up in all the right ways, and she’d do more than just daydream about him if he would just stop giving her the silent treatment and behave like he actually wants to be near her.

Sean most definitely wants to be near Katie, in every way possible, but he is afraid to say anything around her. That’s because Sean has a secret that will be revealed the moment he opens his mouth, and he’d rather have Katie think him rude than to mock him for something he can’t help doing whenever she’s near him. Katie just can’t accept the status quo and she pokes and prods and goads Sean into revealing his true feelings, why he wouldn’t speak to her and why any relationship they could have together would be a terrible mistake. But as they are drawn into the mystery of who is threatening a secretive music star, both Sean and Katie discover that even their deepest fears are no match for true love.

What I love about Ruthie Knox’s writing is how she always manages to combine interesting and sympathetic characters with a compelling plot to produce an emotionally satisfying romance that seems almost effortless. I loved Sean and Katie, and how their personalities complemented each other so well. Sean is the damaged hero who overcompensates for an unhappy childhood while keeping himself closed off to others for fear of their pity. Katie is the woman with her heart on her sleeve, unwilling to let Sean keep her at arm’s length once she goads him into revealing his true feelings, even if she ends up with a broken heart yet again. The progression of their relationship is realistic and irresistible. The secondary plot with Judah, the threatened musician, works well in providing the opportunities to bring Katie and Sean together without taking the focus away from where it belongs.

“Flirting With Disaster” is another welcome addition to the Camelot series and consistently great work by Ruthie Knox. I’m already anticipating the next book in the series, when we get to see more of Amber Clark Mazzara and her hunky husband, Tony in Making it Last (July 15, 2013).
