MMYEblogtour

My guest today is Erotic Romance author Cari Silverwood.  She writes dark Erotic Romance in her Pierced Hearts series.  I like BDSM romance, but when it enters into realms that I'm not comfortable with....well, then it's just not for me.  I have definite BDSM romance limits, do you?

Because of that I asked Cari to talk about how dark is too dark in Erotic Romance.  Enjoy!

~~~***~~~
How dark is too dark in Erotic Romance?  Exploring the fuzzy zone.
The more capture fantasy stories I write, the more I’ve come to realize that too dark varies from person to person. My first book in the series, Take Me, Break me, was written to have a foot in both camps. I wanted to make readers wonder if it was dark, or just another ‘light’ BDSM romance.
For some, it was so dark that even though they liked that book, they couldn’t read the next one. For others, it was too light and fluffy. It’s the same with anything in life. For some any BDSM is too dark, for others it’s when a story ventures into the dubious consent or even the non-consent zone. And there are some readers who will read almost anything erotic.
I think once you call a story a romance, it does become harder to write a darkly erotic plot. Where’s the romance going to be if you want to see the hero hung, drawn, and quartered? You have to admit that pours a big bucket of cold water over any romance.
That’s assuming it’s the hero who does the naughty, icky things to our heroine. The balance between liking a bad boy and wanting him castrated is rather tricky if there’s been forced seduction. But what if it’s not him but, say, a bunch of badass vampires. They suck our lady mostly dry of blood and then seduce her into sex with them, and our hero gets to do the rescue. Ta da. Different type of erotic darkness. The hero is still a pure hero. The romance is easy to write in.
There are so many ways to approach the darkness.
Every book I’ve written in the Pierced Hearts series explores a slightly different angle of darkness. In Take Me, Break me, Klaus inflicts all the dubious naughtiness because Jodie sets it in motion. It begins consensual. She says, "yes, please pretend to abduct me", and then when Klaus runs wild with this new power he’s been given, she never quite says no. For me, that book was pure romance. With a touch of dubiousness.
With Book 2, Bind and Keep me, Klaus is forced, by a series of horrific events, into kidnapping a woman to keep himself and Jodie safe. What happens after that is a slow descent into ever more dubious territory. But all the way, Klaus is struggling with his immorality. I like writing dub con, but I think I like it even more when the man is almost as tortured as the woman. That mental conflict makes the tension scorching hot.
In Book 3, Make me Yours Evermore, my men, Andreas and Chris quickly cross the line between good guys and bad guys. There is some internal struggling as in why am I doing this to her but not a whole lot. Chris, for one, relishes having Kat in his grasp from the very start. A fair amount of the tension/ conflict in this book arises from the human trafficking they become mixed up in.
There is also the battle between the very determined Kat and the men as to who will triumph.
This story was not only dark, but I really squicked myself out in places while writing it. But is there romance? I think there are elements of it. I think perhaps there is more romance than the characters ever admit to themselves.
In Book 4, which is yet to be written, I foresee more romance, because this time the hero is a fairly moral man, despite his criminal past, and what he does to the heroine, he is forced to do. Dark as dark can be, but with good-ish people at the center. That one feels like a delicious story, like it’s rolling around in my mouth waiting to be eaten, and I’m quivering to write it, but it’s not the next one I have planned.
Taking what you want may come at a terrifying price.
Chris calls his darkest, nastiest fantasy into the light of day when he has to kidnap Kat to save a friend. For years, he’s wanted to bring her to her knees.
But claiming her draws attention.  Andreas wants to save Kat, until he sees her response to raw male dominance.  More dangerous are the human traffickers, who regard the acquisition and selling of women as a very high stakes business. And they’re watching. Everything.
Death. The perversion of love. The loss of freedom.
Sometimes there is no choice.
Warning: Capture fantasy; dubious consent; anal play; strap-on; M/f/M and f/f scenes; BDSM themes including caning, spanking, bondage, and piercing, as well as some upside-down naughtiness.  Also contains one Dom gone bad who believes obsession means never having to say you’re sorry.
Enjoy this special excerpt from Make Me Yours Evermore:
The water might be cold but she was warm against my skin. I couldn’t help admiring her curves as I smoothed away the grime of all that had happened to her over the last day. A few times she stirred and pushed at my hand but I persisted. Her skin was pale, accentuating the red of her bra and black of her panties – color coded scraps of cloth that screamed sexual territory. All the best bits were underneath those. Her lips were plump with the promise of kisses. Long legs, female contours…
Damn.
At last the tape loosened and I gently pulled the bits away from each strand of her hair, revealing her face. What color were her eyes? I turned her face upward and stroked her cheek until she opened them.
Gray. A pretty and liquid light gray.
“Hi,” I said softly.
She only groaned quietly and blinked.
When she turned her cheek away and nestled back into me, curving her back and drawing up her legs so the water swirled, I had to clamp down on a surge of emotion. Her eyelids drifted down again. She clung to my leg with both arms – determined yet weak. Her hair swept in lazy arcs against the masculine heaviness of my thigh.
Beauty personified.
I ached somewhere deep inside. What did Chris want to do to her?
The draw to protect her was so strong. I didn’t care what she might or might not have done. So cute all snuggled around me. I’d never had a woman do this. Ever. Not in such a vulnerable way.
“Hey, baby girl.” I stroked her cheek again. “I’m going to get you out of this.”
She stirred but her eyes stayed shut. “Not a baby. Fugg off.”
I chuckled and smiled. “Not a hope.”
Daylight was fading by the time we had her out of the bath and dried off.
When Chris wrist and ankle cuffed her and collared her with black leather, I managed to stay quiet. When he attached a metal leash, I fought not to explode.
Maybe part of this was that I also found her disturbingly sexy all collared and leashed. That scared me.
What I like the most about "dub con" or captured fantasies is the edge they bring into the play/scene. With both, a power exchange between the two must be in place for either to happen. When done properly, all parties involved are highly satisfied.
My FREE Kindle Quest
I've wanted a Kindle for what seems like forever, but haven't been able to afford it (and that's saying something since I can justify the cost of just about ANYTHING that I really want). I've tried winning one in one of the many giveaways that have taken place over the couple of years, but with no luck :( So I've decided to take matters in hand so to speak :) I've now decided that I am going to accumulate enough Swagbucks from my Swabucks searches to buy one...so in essence my new Kindle will be FREE...funded entirely by my internet searches done on Swagbucks. I'll keep you informed of the Great Kindle Quest below (in case you're interested....if not feel free to just skip over this part, but really who wouldn't be interested in a FREE Kindle?)
Goal: $119
Current Swagbucks Amazon Gift Card balance: $90.00
If you'd like to learn how you can earn Swagbucks and earn your own Amazon Gift Cards to buy books, a Kindle or other merchandise sold at Amazon contact me and I would be more than happy to tell you how I plan to go about it. (just so you know you can earn both Amazon.com and Amazon.ca gift cards on this rewards site)
