Summary from the publisher:

First published as a five-part e serial novel, Anything He Wants inflamed imaginations everywhere and became a national bestseller.  Now available for the first time ever as a complete book, this edition contains never-before-released scenes and special bonus material. Don’t miss this erotic tale of  a powerful billionaire who always gets what he wants and the young woman who’s about to enter his exclusive realm--a world of glittering opulence and all-consuming passion, where she’ll explore the darkest reaches of her own desire.

Lucy Delacourt's temp position isn't quite her dream job but it pays the bills. The highlight of her day is riding the elevator in the mornings with a handsome stranger. Tall, dark, and sexy as hell, Lucy knows he's way out of her league, but a girl can look, right?

Everything changes the day the stranger seduces her. Completely out of character, she yields without a fight, but she has no idea her wanton acts with a man whose name she doesn't know will change her life forever. Because the sexy stranger is none other than Jeremiah Hamilton, billionaire CEO of Hamilton Industries, and one taste isn't nearly enough to satisfy his need.  As the billionaire pulls Lucy deeper into his world of high stakes business deals and ruthless takeovers, he demands nothing less than her complete surrender.  But even as enemies seek deadly revenge against him, she’ll discover that her greatest threat is falling for her fiercely guarded boss…and yielding to her own darkest needs.

My Musings:

I had originally read Anything He Wants as the 5 part series thanks to the free 1 hour of daily in-store reading on my nook. When the opportunity to read the full-length novel became available, I was eager to read the “never-before-released scenes and special bonus material” promised in that release.  I was also wondering how well each of the five sections would flow into the next when read all together.

The story of Lucy and Jeremiah starts with an elevator ride that begins like all the others they have shared, at first by coincidence and later by Lucy’s design. It’s during this particular elevator ride when Jeremiah decides to show Lucy that he was noticing her just as much as she had been noticing him. What follows is a whirlwind of events which turn Lucy’s world upside down, placing both her heart and life in danger.

Jeremiah is the rich and powerful CEO of Hamilton Industries, and he wants Lucy to be the latest in an apparently long line of female personal assistants. When her contract says “anything he wants” it means just that: anything. Most of the time, that means any flavor of sex he might desire, with an emphasis toward a D/s relationship. As the story unfolds, we meet a whole cast of characters from Jeremiah’s world, including estranged members of his family, but since Lucy is orphaned and nearly friendless, most of what we know of her is what we see from her point of view.. Since the majority of her POV is confined to Jeremiah and what he is doing to her, what we see of her isn’t really much at all.

When I read Anything He Wants as a series, my impression was that the opening was definitely the best part of the whole story, thanks to the immediacy and intensity of their initial sexual encounters. As events progressed, however, the individual parts simply did not hang together particularly well. A big problem for me was how Lucy was merely a cardboard cutout with just a minimum of background details to explain why she would need the money offered in the outrageous “anything he wants” contract and why nobody would miss her when she suddenly jetted off to Paris and back again. Jeremiah was provided with slightly more background material, but only enough to foreshadow future events and provide him with the prerequisite air of mystery that Lucy finds so compelling.

When I read my review copy of the full-length novel, it appeared not to have been changed at all from the original multi-part series. Indeed, each section was presented with the original cover from when they were only available individually, emphasizing their separateness. If there were any additions or changes made to the original text, it wasn’t obvious to me where they might be. That’s a real shame because some additional fleshing out of the various characters would have really improved the story overall, especially the last section where multiple unexpected betrayals occur in rapid succession, and where my patience with where the story was going nearly reached its breaking point.

Ultimately, Anything He Wants was neither terrible nor remarkable in either incarnation. The next book in the series will not be serialized, which may either be a big improvement or prove that the lack of character development and plot flow in the first one wasn’t just due to its multi-part origin. I am hoping for the former and not the latter.

Review: Master Class by Cassandra Carr

Summary from the publisher:

Ryan Tomasi feels like a failure. His marriage is officially over; the ink dried on the divorce decree. His friend Jack introduces him to BDSM and he agrees to attend a Halloween party at a club. A submissive approaches him, offering herself, and how can he refuse the kneeling beauty? They do a whirlwind scene and Ryan is addicted—both to dominance and to her.

Lisette Rinaldo is returning to the BDSM club for the first time since ending a bad relationship with her former master. She spots Ryan and is taken by the combination of self-assurance and nervousness the man displays as he takes in his surroundings. And after he gives her an incredible re-introduction to the lifestyle, she knows she needs to see the man again.

Ryan and Lisette explore each other and the lifestyle, but what started out as playtime quickly evolves into something more. The problem? Ryan isn’t ready to get serious again and Lisette doesn’t want to fall in love with a guy who can’t give all of himself to her. Both of them are going to have to break out of the bonds holding them back from happiness to pass this Master Class.

My Musings:

I read a lot of contemporary BDSM romance novels and have a list of authors in that genre that are pretty much auto-buy for me. Cassandra Carr has been on that list for a while now, but Master Class is far and beyond my favorite read from her. It takes the standard plot of Dom meets sub on a path less traveled, not only by what happens in the story but also by what does not happen. It also features the hero and heroine of “Caught” as important supporting characters, although it is not necessary to have read that book before this one.

Ryan is just starting out as a brand-new baby Dom at the BDSM club where his good friend and co-worker Jack has been playing for some time with his beloved submissive Callie. The club’s Halloween party is the perfect open event for Ryan to scope out possible uncollared submissives who might be willing to scene with a new Dom. After finalizing his ugly divorce just that week, the last thing he expects or wants is any new emotional entanglement. But then he meets Lisette.
“Wow, those are eyes I want to obey.”

Lisette is an experienced submissive who has been away from the lifestyle since she ended an abusive relationship with her previous Dom, a man who had treated her so badly for so long that it took other people to point out to her that this was not what BDSM was all about. After her brief attempts at vanilla relationships, she’s finally ready to look for another Dom. When she sees Ryan sitting next to Jack at the club party, the attraction is instant and powerful. She kneels before him to offer a bottle of water... and herself. Neither she nor Ryan could possibly have anticipated what would happen next and how it would change both their lives.
“Cheekiness will be taken out on your cheeks, girl.”

The title Master Class is so perfect for what takes place, and not just because Ryan is an English professor. As we follow Ryan and Lisette in their careful hesitant dance toward what could be a genuine and lasting love, we see them teach each other not only how to interact in the somewhat stylized BDSM environment, but how to trust each other with both their bodies and hearts. The decision to let us in on what both characters are thinking and how they behave when they aren’t in each other’s presence helps us see the journey to their HEA as inevitable, if they can just believe it can happen.
“Oh, <bleep>. I did it. I fell in love with him.”

I know I’ve raved in previous reviews about Cassandra Carr’s skill in writing nuanced relationships in a genre so often lacking subtlety but it bears repeating for this review. Master Class is emotional without being overly angsty and touching without an excess of external drama. It’s one of the best new contemporary BDSM romances I’ve read this year and I hope that there will be more stories with these characters in the future.
“What better investment is there than us?”

Review: Night's Darkest Embrace by Jeaniene Frost

Title: Night's Darkest Embrace*
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series:  N/A
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Pocket Star
Format: E-book
Date/Year:  November 2012

Summary from the publisher:

Enter the dark realm of Nocturna in Jeaniene Frost’s redhot tale, where blisteringly sexy Raphael dominates the demons of a lawless dimension and tries to help a beautiful young woman avenge her cousin’s disappearance.

My Musings:

Let’s get something straight before I even begin, I love Jeaniene Frost.  I think her Night Huntress, World Huntress, and Night Prince series are all fantastic.  If she writes it, I want to read it.

Night’s Darkest Embrace isn’t related to any of her previous series.  It has the same great writing and similar components but takes place in a completely different world.  This is a world filled with humans and different levels of demons.  There are ancient fallens as well as their descendants,  the pureblood demons.  Next in line are the partials, that’s what is created when humans and demons have children. Each level of demon hunts and feeds off the level of demon below them.  Demon stories are my favorite type of paranormal so I was thrilled to discover this world.

It took me a chapter or two to get a feel for the world but I liked it once I got into it.  The main characters are Rafael and Mara.  They have a similar feel to Frost’s more popular characters, Bones and Cat.  Rafael is the ruler of Nocturna. He is powerful, a bit scary, and a total mystery.  Mara is a partial who enters Nocturna to hunt down the pureblood who killed her partial-demon cousin.  Mara is a fighter and has a tendency to be reckless but is very likeable.

The build up to the romance between Mara and Rafael was great.  I could feel the chemistry between them.  Once they finally stopped fighting each other and gave into their desire, I liked them together.  Frost is known for great sex scenes and she didn’t disappoint with Rafael and Mara.

Night’s Darkest Embrace is a 100 page novella. This world was a lot to take on in a novella.  I would have preferred a full length novel, but I was still happy with what I got.  It had the perfect balance of action and romance for me.  It’s a very good read and I recommend it to fans of paranormal romance.

Review: The Devil's Thief by Samantha Kane

Summary from the publisher:

The daughter of a reformed jewel thief, Julianna Harte knows a thing or two about stealth. When the foundling home she provides for finds itself in dire financial straits, Julianna is forced to do the unthinkable. In a bit of misguided Robin Hood derring-do, she slips through the window of a wealthy rake to search for a treasure she knows is there: an invaluable pearl. But when the towering and very naked occupant of the moonlit bedroom ambushes her with a bargain—a night in his bed in exchange for the pearl—Julianna doesn’t know if it’s masculine heat or sheer desperation that makes his terms so tempting.

Alasdair Sharpe had no intention of keeping his end of the bargain. Planning to offer his little cat burglar carte blanche instead, he promptly loses himself in the delights of unexpected pleasure. But when he awakes the next morning to find his family heirloom gone, fury quickly replaces sensual languor. Of course, Alasdair is more than willing to use seduction to reclaim his stolen pearl—and find the key to Julianna’s heart.

My Musings:

I have been a fan of Samantha Kane’s Brothers in Arms series for years.  As a matter of fact, she may be the author that introduced me to the joys of a menage relationship (reading about it people, not living it!)  I love her books, so I was excited to have the chance of reviewing her first book for a mainstream publisher.  I was also nervous because I was afraid her style would be changed because the book was intended for a different audience.

I shouldn’t have worried.

The Devil’s Thief is a straight historical romance.  There is no sexual kink involved, but the sex scenes are still hot.  More importantly, the relationship between Julianna and Alasdair is heart warming.  They got off to such a bad start and they have so many problems to overcome, you really, really want them to work things out.

Julianna is the more likeable of the two characters.  After her unconventional upbringing, she is determined to help other children who have no one to care for them.  That is why she turns to thievery. She does not have the money to keep her foundling home afloat.

Alasdair, however, is a rake and an immature one at that.  Although the heirloom belongs to his side of the family, he only really wants it to spite his cousin.  That is until Julianna steals it.  Fortunately, Alasdair realizes he must grow up if he is going to win Julianna and regain the heirloom.  More importantly, he realizes that Julianna is what he really cares about, not the heirloom.  He finally understands which is the true “pearl of great value.”

There are a number of characters introduced in this book who I am sure will have their own stories soon.  The next book in the series, Tempting the Devil, is about Alasdair’s friend Roger.  It will be released in July of 2013 and I cannot wait.

Guest Author & Giveaway: J. Kenner featuring Release Me

Wednesday, December 19

I have a confession to make. I haven't read Fifty Shades of Gray, nor have I read Bared to You. There I've said it. Please don't revoke my romance reader's card. Since I had heard such good things about Bared to You I decided I would read that and had every intention of reading it this year. But as the end of the year closes in on us, I've come to the realization that that may not happen. I'm resolved. Now I've got a plan though. I'll read all three together back to back :)

I have to wonder though with so many books insinuating "if you liked Fifty Shades & Bared to You, then...." if that deters or encourages other readers like myself who are romance readers, but haven't read them either. Or maybe I'm like the only one left, LOL. Would you buy it because of that association? I won't, BUT I will take a look at it and find out more about it. Which is what I did when I first learned about Release Me by J. Kenner.

Author J. Kenner is my guest today to share with us her favorite scene from Release Me, the first book in her Stark Trilogy, a book and series that I'm immensely interested in learning more about. Enjoy!

Put the privacy screen up, please … I have a scene to write!

When I confirmed the date for today’s stop on the Release Me blog tour, I asked if there was any particular topic that the folks at Seductive Musings would like me to write about, and I was told that the slate was wide open, but that they had a few suggested topics if I wanted to pick one.

As a matter of fact, I did.  The topic “Favorite scene” jumped out at me because I had been thinking of my favorite scene not that long ago when I was picking segments to post on my blog in the days leading up to release.  (As it happens, I’m going to be posting two or three pages from Release Me each day, in order, starting this coming weekend, and beginning where the Scribd excerpt leaves off.)

So that’s what I’m choosing:  My favorite scene.

And if you’ve had the chance to read the book, you may be able to guess the scene from the headline.  Yup, the limo scene.

If you haven’t read the book, I don’t think it’s a spoiler in a book like Release Me to tell you that it’s a hot and steamy scene.  But what makes it different is that Nikki’s in the car alone.  Damien’s not even there.  Well, at least not in person…

Now, there are a lot of scenes between Nikki and Damien that I love.  Sometimes, it’s a challenge to get a character to fall in line and reveal their voice and their wit.  Not these two.  They were made for banter, and I love the way their sparkle made my keyboard fly.

But that limo scene … well, it definitely heated up my keyboard.  Here’s a taste:
“I—I like coffee,” I admit. I take a deep breath. “But I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Thousands of coffee bean growers across the globe would disagree with you.”

“Dinner. Coffee. A date. With you. I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Really?  I find it exceptionally appealing.”

“Mr. Stark…”

“Ms. Fairchild,” he says, and I can hear the smile in his voice.

“You’re exasperating.”

“So I’ve been told. But I prefer the word persistent. I don’t take no for an answer.”

“Sometimes, that’s the only answer there is.”

“Perhaps. But this isn’t one of those times.”

I can’t help but smile as I settle more comfortably back against the soft leather upholstery. “Isn’t it? You forget that I’m the one who has to say yes or no, and I’ve already told you my answer, and I don’t intend to change it.”

“Sorry. But I’m afraid you’ve met your match, Mr. Stark.”

“I certainly hope so, Ms. Fairchild,” he says.

I frown a bit as I try to guess just where he’s shifting the conversation. Because I know damn well he’s not giving in. To be honest, I’d be disappointed if he was giving in.

“I asked you this once and you evaded the question. Let me try again—are you attracted to me?”

“I—excuse me?”

His laugh is low and soft. “I’m quite certain you heard me, but in the interest of fair play, I’ll repeat the question. Slowly, and clearly. Are you attracted to me?”

I open my mouth, then shut it again because I have absolutely no idea how I should respond.

“It’s not a trick question,” he says, though of course I know it is.

“I am,” I finally say, because it’s the truth and I have no doubt he knows it. “But so what?  What straight female on this planet isn’t attracted to you?  I’m still not going out with you.”

“I get what I want, Nikki. You should know that about me right from the start.”

“And you want dinner with me?  I’d think a man in your position would want something a bit more impressive. Like to colonize Mars.”

“Dinner is just the beginning. I want to touch you,” he says, his voice low and commanding. “I want to run my hands over every inch of you. I want you wet for me. I want to finish what we started, Ms. Fairchild. I want to make you come.”

It is suddenly very, very hot in the limo, and I seem to have forgotten the basic steps required for breathing.

I don’t think …

I realize the words are only in my head and try again. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“It’s an extremely good idea. Hell, it’s all I’ve been thinking about since I put you in that limo. Touching you again. Stroking you. Kissing you.”

I squirm, determined to hold it together. But I am weak and well-liquored, and my determination is fraying around the edges.

“Tell me you haven’t thought of it, too.”

“I haven’t,” I say.

“Don’t lie to me, Nikki. That’s rule number one. Never lie to me.”

“Is this a game?” I ask.

“Isn’t everything?”

I don’t answer.

“Simon Says, Nikki. Have you played before?”  His soft voice is like a caress.

“Is the privacy screen in place?”

I glance up. I’m at the very back of a very long limo. I can see the driver in the front, his shoulders in the black jacket, the stark white of his shirt collar. He has reddish hair, mostly hidden by a black cap. It seems to me that he is a million miles away. But he’s not, he’s right there, probably listening to every word we’ve been saying.

“He’s very discrete,” Damien says, as if reading my thoughts. “But why torment the man?  The silver button on the console behind you controls the screen. Do you see it?”

I twist around and see a bank of buttons set into the paneling behind me. “Yes.”

“Push it.”

“You didn’t say Simon Says.”

His low chuckle delights me.

“Good girl. Are you suggesting you’d rather leave it down? Think before you answer, Nikki. For what I have planned, most women would like some privacy.”

I lick my lips. If I push that button I’m saying yes to so much more than the damn screen.

Did I want that?
He’s talking about seeing me naked. About touching me. About kissing me. About running his fingers over my skin.

I rest my finger lightly on the button, remembering the feel of his hand. Remembering how I almost let him get too close, how I almost revealed too much.

But he’s not in the car. I can do this. I can lose myself to the champagne and the night and the allure of Damien Stark.

But am I leading him on? Making him think that fantasy will become reality?

I swallow again, because I don’t care. I want the release. I want this man’s voice in my head and the fantasy of his hands on my body. He’ll deal. He has rules?  Screw that. Right now, I’m making my own damn rules.

I press the button.

Needless to say, the scene gets steamier.

I love that scene.  I love the back and forth between Nikki and Damien, and most of all I love the fact that it’s a sexy, romantic, physical scene without actually being physical.  And I wanted that.  More important, the characters needed that.  (And, yeah, I think readers will enjoy it.)

But that early in the game, there was no way in hell that Nikki would let Damien touch her like that.  She’s just not ready for it, not with the secrets she has.  And so the limo phone sex is a fabulous choice for her.

But why is it my favorite?  Well, for that very reason; the scene let me move the story forward the way I wanted, but still keeping the characters true to themselves.  But more than that, the scene is a favorite because of the way the characters ran the show.  I knew I wanted a phone-sex-in-the-limo scene.  I knew why (the reasons I’ve mentioned) and I knew where it would go in the story.  But I didn’t know the details of how it would come to pass.  I can remember smiling as I wrote it, as the characters flirted and bantered and came to life on my computer screen.

Nikki and Damien did that a lot for me, so I probably could have fairly said a dozen others were my favorite.  But those scenes didn’t involve limos and phones and panties and ice.  So of course I had to choose this one!

How about you?  What’s your favorite scene from a book you’ve read or a story you’ve written?  What buttons do favorite scenes push in you?

For fans of Fifty Shades of Grey and Bared to You comes an erotic, emotionally charged romance between a powerful man who’s never heard “no” and a fiery woman who says “yes” on her own terms.

He was the one man I couldn’t avoid. And the one man I couldn’t resist.

Damien Stark could have his way with any woman. He was sexy, confident, and commanding: Anything he wanted, he got. And what he wanted was me.

Our attraction was unmistakable, almost beyond control, but as much as I ached to be his, I feared the pressures of his demands. Submitting to Damien meant I had to bare the darkest truth about my past-and risk breaking us apart.

But Damien was haunted, too. And as our passion came to obsess us both, his secrets threatened to destroy him-and us-forever.

Stay Tuned for Delilah Marvelle...just not today

Tuesday, December 18

If you stopped by to chat with Delilah Marvelle today you may be wondering what happened :)  Unfortunately we've had to reschedule her visit @ Seductive Musings, but don't you worry I'll get it worked out...eventually :)

In the meantime, please come back tomorrow because author J. Kenner will be here with her book Release Me!  (think 50 Shades.)

p.s. finished The Duchess War by Courtney Milan Sunday evening and I really really loved it.  Like 5 stars loved it.  Much to my delighted surprise a novella in the series, A Kiss for Midwinter was released yesterday.  Just a few days after The Duchess War.  Woo hoo!  Needless to say I've already plunked down my $0.99 and can't wait to read it!  She's spoiling me and I am going to be really really sad that I won't be able to read the next one right away.

Monday's Muse

Monday, December 17

I'm seriously starting to stress about the holidays. It started Sunday when I was thinking about all of the things that I should try to get done this week before my brother and his family come to visit for the holidays.  I can't wait to see them.  They were here in July but that seems like ages ago.  Sometime Skype and talking on the phone just doesn't cut it, ya know.  Those little hugs just aren't the same over the internet :(

Being with family that you love is an important part of the holidays for me.  The most important part actually.  Little Love asked me on the way home from school last week what I wanted for Christmas and I told her a year full of hugs and kisses whenever I want one :)  Of course I asked her for this because she's a miser with them and holds them as ransom because she know I love them so much.   Yes, she's a handful and I love her dearly.  She's six so I know it'll only get worse as she gets older so I'm trying to squeeze out all that I can now.

Which also made me incredibly sad when I came home on Friday and found out what had happened in Conneticut.  My heart hurts when I think what those families are going through, especially since it's so close to the holidays.  If they are anything like me they've been planning and buying gifts getting just as excited about Christmas because they can't wait to see their faces on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought them.  I would hazard a guess that most of those children still believed in Santa.  It makes me want to cry when I imagine if I were in the same situation.  But I believe hugs can help, it won't make the hurt go away, but it will help.  Hugs always make me feel better, even if it is just in consolation.  My heart goes out to anyone who has lost a loved one this year and will struggle with celebrating the holidays without them.  ((Hugs)).

And on a happier note, I believe if our Muse asked for hugs and kisses all the year through I would be more than happy to gift him with that, LOL.

p.s. I am reading The Duchess War by Courtney Milan...and sigh I so so loving it. I hate for it to end. The hero, LOVE!  The heroine, also LOVE!  It is very possible (more like probable but I can't say that for certain since I'm still reading it) that you will see it on my Favorites of 2012 list :)

This week at Seductive Musings:
  • Tuesday:  Author Delilah Marvelle will be my guest to celebrate the release of her new HQN historical romance, Forever a Lord.  Can't wait for this one!
  • Wednesday:  Author J. Kenner, aka J.K. Beck, will be my guest to share her new book Release Me.
  • Thursday & Friday:  I'm on some tight design deadlines (meaning I'm behind) so I may or may not post reviews on these days.  If I don't then you won't here from me again on the blog until the new year.  I'll be taking a few days off the computer to spend it with my family during the week of Christmas.

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors with new releases this week, especially Musings authors Courtney Milan, Tina Donahue, Sophie Barnes, Isobel Carr, Delilah Marvelle, Amanda Scott, & Katie Lane!  Congrats!!!

“New Year, New Possibilities” by Carrie Lofty (one half of Katie Porter)

Thanksgiving is about time spent with family. Christmas, Chanukah, and the myriad other holidays timed around winter solstice are about keeping in touch with one’s sense of reverence when the years is at its bleakest. New Year’s Eve, however, is a time of fresh possibilities.

We make New Year’s resolutions because, for one day a year, it feels as if we have an opportunity to stop the clock and say, “Enough! I’m not going to keep living my life this way.” Even if U2 was pessimistic—or perhaps realistic—enough to sing “nothing changes on New Year’s Day,” most of us still experience that flash of hope. This year will be different, because it’s what I deserve. Or, this year I will make a difference, because it’s what I would like to give back to a world that’s been generous to me.

Co-writing our lesbian short story, “Fireworks,” Lorelie and I focused on the optimism that accompanies the arrival of a new year. So often we can become set in our ways and stick to uneventful, even dissatisfying or destructives paths. Our heroines, Rachel and Emma, are stuck. They think saying goodbye is the way to end the heartache of a long-distance relationship, but the ball dropping in Times Square shows them otherwise.

Maybe the way to end their heartache is to stop saying goodbye at all!

New year, new possibilities.

Love has that sort of potential, stronger than mere resolutions, and with the power to reshape lives and turn ordinary people into extraordinary creatures. Even the most optimistic person needs help in sustaining the hope and courage required of love, as Rachel and Emma learn.

Lorelie and I are fortunate enough to be spending this New Year’s together, which will be an amazing treat for friends who work so hard to create beautiful fictional worlds—and beautiful real lives, too. I don’t know what we have planned, but looking back at an eventful, difficult, wonderful, scary, fantastic year is certainly on the list.

So as the clock rolls around toward 2013, ask yourself what the New Year means to you. Is it just another day, overwrought with sentiment by a culture desperate for meaning yet stunted by an inability to change? Or is it a special marker—just one of 365 days when we can stop, reassess, count blessings, make changes, and look forward with a sense of potential that no other day of the year can provide? Maybe you’re somewhere in between the cynical and the sentimental.

But we write romance. We err on the side of sentimental…

Happy holidays, everyone, no matter how you choose to embrace the season. And think on your New Year’s Day. The year 2013 can be amazing, as is every year we live among friends and lovers in happiness and good health.

Here’s the blurb for our story, “Fireworks.”

Rachel’s job is taking her to Tokyo, which means leaving behind her lover and submissive, Emma. When she summons Emma for one last hurrah on New Year’s Eve, Emma answers, hoping desperately to be able to break through her ma’am’s emotional barriers and find the spark of love among the glittering fireworks.

And here’s what you can expect to find in the anthology as a whole:

Christmas is a time of love and joy, and the New Year is a time of renewal. But they are also times of stress and strife, family drama, pressure and heartache—a potent mix of high expectations and conflicted emotions. Add in power exchange relationships, kinky gift swaps, and unconventional love in a sometimes unforgiving world, and you have a formula for a sizzling anthology of stories that tug at your heart.

From Ava March’s forbidden Regency love between men, to Katie Porter’s scorching hot contemporary tale of two women discovering holiday happiness, everyone will find a favorite here. Pervertible toys abound: Lambda Literary Award finalist L.A. Witt’s candy cane, Jane Davitt’s wrapping paper and tape, and Alexa Snow’s Christmas candles all please and delight. Newcomer Elyan Smith and fan favorite Kim Dare both celebrate New Year’s Eve with romantic flair and kinky fireworks, while bestselling author Joey W. Hill’s poignant story of discovery and commitment will lead you home.

Whatever your desires, we invite you to explore new fantasies and old with these eight kinky tales of holiday happy endings.

20% of all proceeds from O Come All Ye Kinky will be donated to the Domestic Violence Project of the National Leather Association–International. (If you buy the book, digital or print, from Riptide’s website, more money goes to the charity because we’re not paying third-party vendor fees.)

You can find out more about the anthology and all the stories here.

Series: The Prophecy #1
Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance

Format: E-book
Date/Year:  Dec 18,  2012

*This book was provided to the reviewer by the author in exchange for an honest review

Summary from the publisher:

Two men will stop at nothing to have her gift, her desire…and her love.

The Prophecy, Book 1

Years ago, with the healing abilities afforded by her blend of Aztec and extraterrestrial blood, Liz was free to do as she wished. Now she is trapped in a blood feud, forced to heal one of her clan’s most dangerous rivals so they can exploit his gift of prophecy.

As she drapes her nude body over his, the rush of his returning strength overwhelms her, and his stunningly sensual caress pushes her to her sexual limit.

Zeke Neekoma never expected to hunger for a woman he’s supposed to hate, but now that he’s tasted her, he has no intention of denying himself the pleasure of her body—or of kidnapping his enemy’s most cherished plaything.

Brought to Zeke’s stronghold to heal his brother, Jacob, Liz surrenders her body’s most traitorous needs to the unrestrained desires of two powerful men. And the brothers fill the lonely void she has too long endured.

But her clan doesn’t intend to let her go without a fight…and the ecstasy that binds Liz to her lovers could be the thing that breaks them.

Product Warnings:
Worlds collide when two Alpha males crave a woman they shouldn’t have. Their dominance and desire knows no limits, culminating in sex so torrid this babe’s never gonna be the same…or free of one brother’s touch.

Special excerpt:

Swaths of white mist cloaked her and curled around him, restricting his movements. A soft, heavy weight pressed down his full length. The mist? How was that possible?

In the distance, he heard low rumbles resembling thunder, except the sounds lifted and fell…the same as voices. Men’s voices?

Zeke listened, unable to make sense of the sounds or to detect any words.

Go, Gabrielle’s voice repeated. I’ll wait for you… I’ll be here when you come back.

He was never going to see her again. Zeke knew it. Felt it. Intolerable pain ripped through him. He reached out to touch her hand again, to run his fingertips over her downy cheek. Instead, his fingers slid over what seemed to be cool linen.

Where the fuck am I?

On his next cautious breath, Zeke caught the unmistakable scent of violets mingled with musk—sweet and light, sultry and feminine.

The mist retreated, as did all hope of Gabrielle, replaced by darkness, the smooth feel of expensive cotton beneath him and the heated weight of a female draped over his length.

Her lips brushed his in striking tenderness, her pleasantly scented breath filling his mouth.

Zeke stiffened, expecting another blaze of pain from the blood flow. Instead, each ache receded beneath soothing warmth, the kind delivered by a slug of booze or a potent narcotic.

She blew into his mouth again, her fingers stroking his biceps. Tingles dashed up Zeke’s arms. On instinct, he reacted, wrapping them around her, one hand on her smooth back, the other gripping her ass, meaty and plush, pulling her into his embrace.

Her breath caught. She tensed in what appeared to be surprise or dread, and yet her lips remained submissive against his, trembling as she parted them, yielding even more.

Bursts of heat, wondrous not painful, worked their way from Zeke’s chest to his groin, his thickening cock. It nuzzled against her cunt, dewy with arousal.

Again, she stiffened but didn’t leave him.

Her name drifted close, one Zeke knew from his visions, but couldn’t retrieve. Thinking proved too difficult, the journey from near death to health leaving him with little at the moment except raw instinct.

Tilting his head, he fitted his mouth to hers and thrust his tongue inside. She whimpered at the intimate invasion. Losing whatever restraint he’d owned, Zeke burrowed his fingers into her thick, fragrant mane to keep her from retreat as he deepened the kiss, not caring how savage it became, wanting it to be.

She’d brought him back against his will, which took him from Gabrielle. Now, she’d pay for that transgression and would see to his pleasure.

Her back arched at his hand sliding down the silky furrow between her cheeks, his fingers reaching her anus. She wiggled when he stroked the tight circle, and then she moaned as he dipped his hand lower, touching her cleft, her vaginal lips glutted with desire, damp with need.

Pleased, he kissed her with a right he’d taken, one she had no say in. The same as he’d had no choice in her bringing him back. With one hand, he held her head to his. With the other, he teased her clit. Delicately. Ruthlessly.

My Musings:

The characters in this book are descendents of two different alien races that visited Earth sometime in the distant past.  The aliens bred with Native American women and gifted some of the children with powers.  Those from Zeke’s people have the gift of prophecy while Liz’s people have healing powers.  The powers are rare and Zeke and Liz are some of the strongest of their respective people.

Carreon, the leader of Liz’s people, has captured Zeke and he is near death.  Carreon kidnaps Liz and forces her to heal Zeke because he wants to use Zeke’s ability for himself.  This healing requires Zeke to have sex with Liz, so that he can be healed completely.

Liz has suffered abuse and humiliation at Carreon’s hands, but she still desires him.  Within minutes of healing Zeke, she is falling in love with him.  Jacob, a grown man, only wants her because she belongs to Zeke.  The only likable person in the story is Zeke and even with him things happen unbelievably fast.

I am not sure why I did not like this book.  The premise had real possibilities and some of the sex scenes were handled very well. The scenes involving sexual foreplay were explicit and arousing.  However, the scenes involving actual sex were rushed, particularly the ones dealing with anal sex.  I got the impression the author was not comfortable describing those. In addition, the emotional responses of all the characters seemed forced and unbelievable.

Finally, I felt the book just stopped.  Yes, it is the first book in a series, but there was not any indication of what was to come.  Normally, I always finish any series I start.  I can’t help myself.  I doubt I’ll bother with this one though.

Overall: 3 - It probably really deserves a two, but the plot has real possibilities and some of the sex scenes were very well done.

Sensuality level: 4 - I almost gave this a five because there is discussion of Liz being submissive and being whipped.  However, it is nothing like a true BDSM book.  The pain is simply mentioned, not described.

Guest Author & Giveaway: Wendy Soliman featuring Compromising the Marquess

Tuesday, December 11

I don't know about you, but I was so excited when I heard that Will & Kate were going to have a royal bundle of joy.  I first saw it on TV when they read the Twitter post live, and within days it's all over the news and magazines.  What I hate about all of the coverage is what it drove the nurse at the hospital to do.  I feel so bad not only for the nurse and her family, but also the broadcasters at the radio station.  Because if there wouldn't have been so much made of that prank call, things might not have turned out like they did.  What to take away from all of this...there are consequences to all of the hype, and I hate that it seems like we never learn from these hard earned lessons.

Let's face it though.  Gossip makes the world go round.  It always has and always will.  In the recently released regency romance, Compromising the Marquess, the heroine writes the scandal for the gossip sheets, but fortunately for her and everyone else involved the story the consequences have a much happier ending than recent history.

Author Wendy Soliman is my guest today to share a bit about how her heroine Leah, gets herself in and out of trouble in the first book in The Foresters series, Compromising the Marquess.  Enjoy!

Thanks for having me here. Compromising the Marquess is a raunchy Regency read in which the heroine, Leah Elliott, writes scandal for a gossip sheet in order to support herself and her sister. I think of Leah as the forerunner to today’s paparazzi. Having mistakenly reported that the marquess is on the verge of declaring for a lady whom he had no interest in, and that lady’s mother wastes no time in calling upon Hal to reinforce the rumour. Leah suggests fixing the problem by posing as his intended.

Here’s how it happens:
“Damnation!” Hal sucked in an angry breath. “They didn’t waste any time. I thought they might at least have restrained themselves until this afternoon.”

“Lady Bentley doesn’t strike me as the procrastinating sort,” Leah said guiltily.

“It would appear not.”

Potter stood statue-like in the doorway, awaiting further instructions. He clearly knew all about the unfortunate piece in the newspaper—Hal would have been surprised had it been otherwise—which was why he’d been informed of the ladies’ arrival.

“Are they in the small salon?” he asked.

“Yes, my lord.”

“All right, thank you, Potter.”

The butler withdrew, closing the door gently behind him.

“What shall you do about her?” Leah asked.

“Avoid her for the time being, until I can think of a way to scotch the rumour.”

“Won’t that make things worse?”

Hal scowled. “Probably, but what choice do I have? Besides, I avoid the ladies who visit Flick like the plague as a general rule, and if I were to join her now it would be seen as confirmation of the gossip.”

“Yes, I suppose so.” Leah tilted her head, sucking absently on her index finger, deep in thought. In spite of his problems, Hal found the sight oddly compelling. She was totally preoccupied, almost unaware of his presence, and he couldn’t seem to pull his gaze away from her.

“It seems to me,” she said speculatively, “that the best way to dispel the tittle-tattle would be to show public affection for another lady.”

“And finish up embroiled with a different female.” Hal shuddered. “Thank you for the suggestion but I have no intention of extracting myself from the fireplace, only to land in the centre of a very different sort of blaze.”

“You escorted me into dinner the other evening, did you not?”

“Yes.” Hal, guessing the direction her thoughts had taken, shot her a look of exaggerated circumspection. “I deliberately gave the impression that I favoured you in order to avoid Miss Bentley.”

“Exactly, and so if you now appear in the small salon with me on your arm—”

“Out of the question!”

“Am I that repulsive to you?” she asked quietly.

“I was thinking more of your reputation.”

“I owe you a favour. It was me who landed you in this mess, remember? Don’t worry, Lord Denby,” she said with a vibrant smile. “I shall expect nothing from you. I most certainly won’t consider myself betrothed, I’m sure my uncle won’t pursue you with his blunderbuss, and I have no other male protectors for you to be concerned about.” Her smile widened, her features glowing with mischief. “What do you say?”

“I say that you’re cork-brained.” Hal studied her, wondering if she might actually have hit upon the solution to his difficulty, but shook his head to dispel that possibility. He couldn’t ask it of her, even if she was entirely to blame for this farrago. “Thank you for offering to make such a sacrifice but there must be another way.”

“All the time you stand here thinking about it, Lady Bentley will be furthering her cause downstairs.” Leah stood up, her attitude exuding fiery courage and stark determination. “The plan will work if we want it to,” she said, her eyes glistening almost as though she looked forward to her own disgrace.

“Possibly, but—”

“Do you have any better ideas?” she asked, actual laughter in her eyes.

“Well…er no, not at this precise moment.”

“Then we’re wasting time.”

He let out an elongated sigh. “Very well, but you will have to pretend to be besotted. Do you think you can manage that?”

She wrinkled her brow. “I’ve never been a particularly good actress, which is another reason I didn’t pursue a career in the opera. But still, since the situation is so grave, I shall do my very best to convey that impression.”

Hal roared with laughter. “Minx!” He proffered his arm. “Come along then. Let’s get this charade over with.”

They reached the door and he was about to open it but, chancing a glance at Leah, he changed his mind.

“What is it now?” she asked.

He canted his head, examining her face with a critical eye. “Something isn’t quite right. You don’t look like a young lady whose affections are engaged.”

“I don’t quite know what you expect me to do about that.”

“Can’t you at least try to look at me with adoration?”

“Hardly. I already told you…oh!”

Without giving her any notice of his intentions, he swept her into his arms, dropped his head and covered those lush lips of hers with his own.

It was something he’d wanted to do since first meeting her, and she’d unwittingly presented him with the ideal excuse to exorcise that particular demon. It wasn’t a delicate kiss, like the one they’d shared on the terrace. This time he meant business. He savoured the heat of her mouth, stoking his own passions as his tongue tantalizingly stroked its corners, daring her to offer him ingress.

When, with a soft sigh, she parted her lips, he felt ridiculously triumphant and didn’t hesitate to take advantage of her unspoken invitation. His tongue foraged, feeding from her sweetness as he explored the contours of her mouth with bold, sensual sweeps. Her tongue tangled with his in an erotic dance that was in danger of slipping beyond his control. The soft curves of her body, supple and inviting, pressing against his chest only made matters worse, causing him to utter a strangled oath and break the kiss.

They were both breathing hard as they separated. Leah’s eyes were clouded, not just with confusion but with passion she was too inexperienced to conceal, her lips delightfully swollen.

“That’s better.” He lifted his hand to twist an errant curl behind her ear. “No one will be left in any doubt about our feelings for one another now.”

She frowned. “How can you say that?”

He chuckled. “You look as though you’ve been thoroughly kissed.”

“Humph!” She looked rather flustered, and for once had nothing more to say. That, in Hal’s experience of the hoyden, was definitely unique.

Grinning, his good humour fully restored, he finally opened the door and ushered her through it ahead of him. It was either that or kiss her witless. The extent of his desire to let the world go hang whilst he took the latter course of action surprised him. He was immune to feminine wiles—God alone knew, he’d had enough experience of avoiding them—but this one had attracted his attention on all levels, simply because she wasn’t attempting to impress him.

“Ready?” he asked, once again extending his arm.

“I was ready some time ago.”

So much for rendering her speechless. “No you weren’t.” He grinned at her, suspecting that the gesture projected a not-entirely-civilized aura. Only reasonable since right now his thoughts, his desires, were anything but civilized.

“But you are now.”

England, 1814

Leah Elliot sells secrets to survive. Donning boy's clothes, she uncovers society scandals for a London gossip rag to support herself and her sister, who were left destitute after their father's death. When she meets the dashing--and perhaps dangerous--Hal Forster, the Marquess of Denby, she learns he may be involved in treason. The rumor is too valuable not to sell, despite her attraction to him...

Hal does have a secret, but he's no traitor: he's a spy embroiled in a mystery, seeking the man who killed his contact in France. He sees the alluring woman behind Leah's disguise at once but is intrigued enough to play along...until he realizes that she's the source of the rumors interfering with his investigation and forcing him into an unwanted betrothal.

Now, Hal and Leah must work together to draw out the culprit and undo the damage caused by Leah's gossip. Or will their passion only cause more scandal?

Congratulations Wendy!  This sounds like a deliciously scandalous story :)  I'm sure readers will be eagerly anticipating the next book, Beguiling the Barrister(June 2013)
