Monday's Muse

Monday, September 30

Hello my friends!

Did you have fun with Blogfest 2013?  I hope so.  Unfortunately I didn't make it around to all of the blogs like I had originally planned to.

I won't be on the blog much this week since I will be preparing to go on vacation.  Then next week I won't be on the blog at all since I will be on vacation.  Yes, I'm taking a complete off-line vacay!  Shocking :)  In the meantime I'd thought I'd share with you a new Muse to get you through the week.  Enjoy!

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors with new releases this week, especially Musings authors Maggie Robinson, Mia Marlowe, Julia London, Jennifer Ashley, Donna Grant, Katie Reus, and Jill Shalvis!!!

Blogfest 2013!

Friday, September 27

Welcome! If this is your first time visiting Seductive Musings I hope you find something tempting, and for my long time followers then I KNOW I have something that will tempt you :)

Before we get to the good stuff I'd like to share with you a little bit about the blog and the blog contributors.  There's me, a romance reader who longed to talk about the books she was reading with other romance readers...thus started the blog, as well as a handful of lovely reviewers who I like to call our Seductive Reviewers.  We talk mostly about books, with occasional commentary about....whatever catches our fancy, giveaways, and other bits of fun.  Did I mention that each Monday we have a new Muse to inspire us to get the week going?  We do :)  Curious? You check check out this week's Muse...for research purposes only of course, LOL.

To celebrate Blogfest 2013 I am giving away one of my most anticipated reads coming out this fall.  Actually two of my most anticipated reads, the prequel novella, and the full length novel that tells the rest of the story.  I'm talking about Pamela Clare's newest I-Team novel, STRIKING DISTANCE and the prequel, FIRST STRIKE.  Haven't read Pamela Clare before?  My friend, you are in for a TREAT!  Seriously, you can thank me later.

I found Pamela Clare's books through this blog actually.  I wrote a post asking what some of my blog followers felt were some of the best Romantic Suspense novels they've read, and over and over again they recommended Ms. Clare's books.  I read devoured the I-Team series, then quickly graduated to her Historical Romances which were equally if not slightly better (my first romance love has always been historical romance so I may be a bit biased).  I've been smitten ever since!  Because of that, one lucky Musings follower will have a change to win both FIRST STRIKE (digital ebook) & STRIKING DISTANCE (paperback):

Just a weekend…

Laura Nilsson knows what she wants: a successful career as a broadcast journalist—and a little fun between the sheets now and again. What she doesn’t want is marriage or kids. When a ripped and sexy stranger intervenes to stop a couple of drunks from harassing her in a hotel bar in Dubai City, all she can think about is spending the rest of the weekend with him—in her bed. There’s just one little problem. Unmarried sex is illegal in Dubai.

… of no-strings sex …

Navy SEAL Javier “Cobra” Corbray is on his way home from a rough deployment in Afghanistan when he finds himself having dinner with “the Baghdad Babe.” What she wants from him—sex with no strings—could land them both in prison. Still, he’s more than happy to oblige her. She’s confident and sexually assertive, and he’s secure enough to lie back and let her make the first strike. But, as she’s about to find out, he’s more than her match.

… or the beginning of something more?
Yet, neither Laura nor Javier has any idea what lies ahead—or how this weekend of mind-blowing sex will impact their emotions. Will they act on their new-found feelings in time, or will they let something special slip away… perhaps forever?

Warning: This story ends with a cliffhanger.

Here's a super special exclusive excerpt from First Strike:

What was it about men who gave off that “don’t fuck with me” vibe that made Laura want to do just that?

“You didn’t like Jumeirah Beach?” For a man who’d come to Dubai City to see the sights, he didn’t seem very impressed.

“Nah, not really.” He raised his beer mug and finished the glass, Laura’s gaze drawn first to his flexing bicep, then to his moist lips. “Growing up, I spent summers at my grandmother’s place in Humacao. You want to see a beach, come to Puerto Rico.”

So he was Puerto Rican—probably a mix of Taíno Indian, African, and Spanish.

“I’m sure it’s beautiful.”

He nodded, smiled, looking into her eyes. “A lover’s paradise.”

A bolt of heat shot through her belly, her pulse skipping.

He made the words sound erotic, pronouncing every syllable slowly, the warmth in his eyes signaling that he wanted her as much as she wanted him.

Surprised by the intensity of her own physical reaction, she raised her glass to her lips, only to find it empty.

“Let me buy you another.”

She set the glass down. “I’d like that. Thanks.”

She watched as he made his way through the crowded restaurant toward the bar to get another glass of wine for her and another beer for himself, his perfect, muscular ass shifting beneath the denim of his jeans as he walked, his movements sleek, confident. People stepped aside for him, as if they knew instinctively that they shouldn’t cross him.

But he wasn’t arrogant. Most men who were ripped and sexy like Javier had egos to match, standing at the center of their own vain little worlds. But Javier hadn’t shown a hint of swagger. Instead, he’d asked her a half-dozen questions about her job, seeming genuinely interested in her answers. He even knew about some of her bigger stories—her exposé on the Pentagon’s failure to supply soldiers with body armor, her investigation into the group of servicemen who’d been running a protection racket in Baghdad. She sensed something deeper in Javier, something that went beyond his good looks and charm, something real.

God, he turned her on.

From the moment he’d sat at her table, her mind had begun spinning sexual fantasies of the two of them together. Everything about him seemed to draw her in—his smooth skin, his voice, the stubble on his square jaw, his clean scent, those full lips. What would they feel like when he kissed her, tasted her, went down on her?

The very thought made her wet.

She’d always been careful about the men she allowed into her bed, sometimes going months and even years between lovers. Her job put her in the public eye, and the last thing she wanted was to leave a trail of men who would watch the news, point to her, and say to their buddies, “Yeah, I slept with her. I fucked the Baghdad Babe.”

Her career didn’t leave a lot of time for men, anyway. She had dreams of one day being a news anchor or perhaps even hosting an evening news program. She had no desire to get married, settle down, and have kids, and that meant she needed to steer clear of men who might mistake her interest for something more than sexual.

She watched as he paid for the drinks and then started back toward the table, another glass of chardonnay in one hand, a mug of beer in the other.

Would he be good in bed?

Pondering that question made her ache inside.

Oh, yes, he would be.

She couldn’t say what made her so sure of that. Maybe it was the way he paid attention to every word she said. Maybe it was the way he moved, so in control of his own body. Maybe it was the heat in his eyes when he looked at her. But she had a feeling that if she ended up in bed with him, he would make it well worth her while.

She crossed her legs, squeezed, trying to appease the ache, but that only made it worse, the feeling of arousal between her thighs impossible to ignore.

Pull it together, Nilsson.

Of course, there was no way for them to hook up—not here. Unmarried sex was illegal in Dubai. It was even illegal for unrelated men and women to be alone together. They couldn’t just get into the elevator, head to her room, and get it on. If they were caught, they’d go to jail, maybe even be flogged.

And wouldn’t that make for a nice news teaser?

Laura Nilsson arrested in Dubai for illicit sex with man she barely knew. Hormones to blame. Film at eleven.

She ran the words through her mind and found herself wondering again what Javier did for a living. Was he Delta Force? An Army Ranger? A Green Beret?

Most U.S. servicemen trusted her enough to tell her what they did for a living, but Javier wasn’t one of them. That meant the work he did was highly classified—or that he worked for a private contractor that specialized in covert ops.

He could be an arms dealer for all you know.

There was no doubt. He was dangerous.

Somehow that thought left her feeling even more aroused.

You need to buy a battery-operated boyfriend.

Even if she’d had one, she wouldn’t have been able to bring it along on her travels. She was pretty sure she’d get into less trouble if she were caught smuggling an AK-47 into Dubai than if she were found in possession of a vibrator.

Javier handed her the wine glass, his warm fingers grazing hers, striking sparks off her skin. He slid into the seat across from her. “This place gets crowded.”

She glanced around them. “It’s Friday night. Most of the city is shut down. Expats have to do something with themselves.”

“Cheers.” He raised his beer glass and drank.

Her gaze locked with his, desire for him driving all other thoughts from her mind. She set her glass aside, leaned toward him, lowering her voice to a whisper, her pulse spiking as she shared what was on her mind. “Will this conversation get awkward if I tell you how very much I want to fuck you?”

Read the rest of Javier & Laura's story in Striking Distance...

Her past is a secret—even to her.
Discovering it will be the most dangerous move of her life.

TV reporter Laura Nilsson, known as the "Baghdad Babe," spent eighteen months in an Al Qaeda compound after being kidnapped live on the air. Two years later, she's still wondering why.

No rescue mission in Javier Corbray's fourteen years as a Navy SEAL affected him the way Laura's rescue did. No woman has stirred his protective instincts the way she has. And he wants her more than he's ever wanted anyone.

As Laura and Javier's passion ignites, so does Laura's need to discover the mystery of her past. Especially when she learns that her abduction was not random—and that she's still a target for a killer with an impenetrable motive. Now Javier will have to rely on his skills to keep the woman he loves from being struck down before she dares uncover the truth.

Feature & Giveaway: Possession by J.R. Ward

Wednesday, September 25

#1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward explores what really happens when good and evil toy with humanity in her new novel of the Fallen Angels, as the salvation of a doomed soul depends once again on a crossroads...

When Cait Douglass resolves to get over her broken heart, throw off her inhibitions, and start really living, she’s unprepared for the two sensual men who cross her path.  Torn between them, she doesn’t know which to choose--or what kind of dire consequences could follow.

Jim Heron, fallen angel and reluctant savior, is ahead in the war, but he puts everything at risk when he seeks to make a deal with the devil--literally.  As yet another soul is unwittingly caught in the battle between him and the demon Devina, his fixation on an innocent trapped in Hell threatens to sidetrack him from his sacred duty...

Can good still prevail if true love makes a savior weak?  And will a woman’s future be the key, or the curse, for all of humanity?  Only time, and hearts, will tell.

To celebrate the release of the fifth book in The Fallen Angels series, POSSESSION on October 1st, Ms. Ward's publisher, Penguin, would like to giveaway a print copy of the first book of The Fallen Angels, COVET to 5, yes 5! lucky Musings followers.  (US only, no PO boxes).  Enter to win in the Rafflecopter form below.

Monday's Muse

Monday, September 23

It's beginning to look a lot like Fall where I live.  The leaves have a slight tinge of color, and the days are a bit cooler.  I've said it before, but Fall is my favorite season.  I love pretty much everything about it.  We went to our local zoo on Sunday and it was a beautiful day to be outside!

I had tons of work that needed to be done, but decided that we all needed to get out and enjoy being together.  I constantly need to remind myself that while work is extremely important that it's not everything. Days like Sunday make it easy to remember that ;)

Another thing that is easy to remember is our Monday's Muse.  Enjoy!

This week at Seductive Musings:
  • Tuesday:  I'll be offline working because I took Sunday off
  • Wednesday:  I'll have a special J.R. Ward giveaway to celebrate the release of her upcoming book, Possession, A Novel of Fallen Angels.
  • Thursday:  I'll be offline working because I took Sunday off :)  Hey, have to pay the piper at some point.
  • Friday:  I'll be participating in Blogfest 2013.  I'm not quite sure what I'll giveaway this year.  A selection of books from my stash, an Amazon GC, or one book that I'm looking forward to?  Do you have a preference?  If so let me know in the comments.

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors with new releases this week, especially Musings authors Lori Foster, Grace Burrowes, Shannon McKenna, Victoria Alexander, Jill Shalvis, Larissa Ione, & Kelly Moran!  Congrats ladies!!!!

Summary from the publisher:

The King of Demons and the Devil’s right hand man, Asmodeus is a dark angel born of evil and created for destruction. When his master orders him to venture into the mortal world and retrieve a female for him, he seizes the chance to leave Hell for the first time, uncaring of what the Devil has planned for her… until he sets eyes on the most beautiful woman he has ever seen—a female who awakens new feelings within his black heart, unleashing passion so intense that it controls him and desire he cannot resist.

He will not let his wretched master have her. She will belong to him.

Liora is a witch with a bad reputation and an obsession with fighting demons. A mission gone wrong sees her sent to Paris to cool off, but when a dark and deadly warrior with a gaze of golden fire lands in her life, she ends up burning hotter than Hell for the wicked angel. Nothing will stand between her and the immense, forbidding male. Not her cousin. Not Asmodeus’s sworn enemy and twin, Apollyon. And certainly not the Devil.

Caught up in a tempest of danger and soul-searing passion, can they survive against the odds and seize their forever after?

My Musings:

Paranormal romance is one of my favorite genres.  When I read the blurb for HER WICKED ANGEL it sounded like it had the potential to be a series I would really enjoy.  As I read the blurb, it reminded me of two different series I already love, J.R. Ward’s Fallen Angel series and Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series.  Felicity Heaton was a new to me author, but I have read some amazing reviews for her other books.  With that in mind, I felt I had to give this series a try.  I only hoped I wasn’t sabotaging myself from the beginning by having my expectations so incredibly high.

I knew very quickly that I wasn’t going to fall in love with this series.  The author’s writing style did not gel with me.  I tend to get bored with descriptive imagery.  I don’t like reading about the inner thoughts of characters, and I really don’t want to read conversations between characters talking about feelings and emotions.  All of these things happened a lot, and that was a problem for me.  I prefer my paranormal with a lot of action and with characters who are cruel, independent, snarky, crude, sexy, and wickedly smart.  I’m by no means saying that these characteristics were absent from HER WICKED ANGEL, it is more that they weren’t as unapologetically in your face as I like them to be.

Most of my problems with this book stemmed from personal taste.  I found the characters to be a bit too much on the needy and whiny side.   I also didn’t care for the good vs. evil theme.  I like my evil characters to be cruel, nasty, and vile, but have just barely enough personality and heart to make them lovable.  Asmodeus simply wasn’t evil enough for me.  He was harboring too much good.  :)

There was one huge, glaring issue I had with this book.  I had a big problem with the relationship between Asmodeos and Liora.  I felt their romance was immature, think ‘Twilight’-esque,  and unhealthy.  I’m used to seeing the claims of “You’re mine” and the urge to claim the chosen mate when it comes to paranormal romances.  I’m not a fan of it, but I’ve grown accustomed to it.  Asmodeus took that trope way too far in my opinion.  His thoughts were more along the lines of, “I can’t live without you” and “Nobody else can ever have you.”  Statements like that set off alarms in my brain, and that pushed their relationship into creepy territory.  Most of the crazy jealousy and possessiveness was resolved toward the end, but it left a lingering bad taste in my mouth.

I think I’ve harped enough on all the things which didn’t work for me.  I need to emphasize that there were some positive points.  The sex is hot.  I had my doubts about the quality of the romantic relationship, but I was never in doubt about their passion for each other.  The action scenes were also very good, especially all the fight scenes.  I can also say that I never had any complaints about the quality of the writing.  HER WICKED ANGEL was not a good fit for my taste, but I can see why other readers will like it.

Summary from the publisher:

Gia Marie Giselli’s boyfriend wanted to share her with his business partner, and she refused. She leaves New York the moment she gets a chance and heads to Houston, Texas. With the help of her cousin Teddy, a detective there, she finds a new home and tries to put her past behind her.

In Texas she meets Garrett, Wes, and Gunny McCallister. Her world and impression of ménage relationships are turned upside down. They want her, and as they try to convince her that this relationship is serious, some jerk from work attempts to assault her, making all her fears of men resurface.

When they finally get through that incident, Gia's past reemerges. Can the McCallisters keep her safe and convince her that true love and compassion don't come in the form of fists, control, and fear?

Note: There is no sexual relationship or touching for titillation between or among siblings.

My Musings:

Gia is involved with a controlling, abusive man who has isolated her from all her friends.  She doesn’t have any family in New York and is too scared to leave him on her own.  She is finally able to stand up for herself when Gia’s lover wants to share her with his business partner.  She tries to fight them off when they are opportunely interrupted by a rival and she manages to escape. Needless to say, she is terrified of being held between two men.

The book continues several months later where Gia has run to her only remaining relative who just happens to be in law enforcement.  He is also involved in a menage marriage which apparently in Houston, TX is not that unusual . . . really? Anyway, this gives her the opportunity to observe lovers who are happy in sharing relationships.

Which brings us to three former Marine commandos who happen to be brothers.  Their fathers are also brothers and married to the same woman.  They expect to have a marriage like their fathers and mother and are waiting to find the right woman.  So, of course, they all fall in love with Gia . . . a woman who is terrified of being shared.

All of this seems very far fetched, but it really does work. Garrett, Gunnar, and Wes are strong, protective, alpha males.  They truly care for Gia and are willing to wait until she is ready to develop a relationship with the three of them.  To add to her issues, she is being stalked by a coworker who has a reputation for assaulting women, but no one has ever pressed charges.

Gia is determined to never be a victim again.  She is studying martial arts so that she can protect herself and to build her confidence.  Although, she is happy to be living near her cousin and looks to him for safety, she does not expect anyone to take care of her.  Even so, she is not too stubborn or stupid to accept help when she needs it.  In other words, she is not one of those “too stupid to live” (TSTL) heroines.

It is the ending of the book that caused me to rate it as a three rather than a four.  All of the plot lines just came together too conveniently to be believable.  I cannot say more without spoilers, but the climax was just too pat.  My initial reaction was “you’ve gotta be kidding me.”  It worked, but it was still jarring.

I have read the book twice, once for my own enjoyment and again for review purposes.  I have to say I liked it better the second time through. I think I just needed to get used to the author’s style of writing.  This is the first book in a series and there were several characters introduced that I look forward to reading about in their own books.

Summary from the publisher:

Miss Jane Fairfield has made a career of social disaster. She wears outrageous gowns and says even more outrageous things. The only reason she's invited anywhere is because of her immense dowry--which is all part of her plan to avoid marriage and keep the fortune-hunters at bay.

Mr. Oliver Marshall is the illegitimate son of a duke. His acceptance in society is tenuous as it is. If he wants any kind of career at all, he must do everything right. He doesn't need to come to the rescue of the wrong woman. He certainly doesn't need to fall in love with her. But there's something about the lovely, courageous Jane that he can't resist...even though it could mean the ruin of them both.

My Musings:

Oliver Marshall is a driven man.  He has grand ambitions of being Prime Minister one day.  For now, he is garnering support for voting reform laws.  To obtain this support, he has to pander to the same titled lords who made his life in school hell.  Oliver is the illegitimate son of a duke, and therefore not a true nobleman.  He craves power, and is willing to do what he has to in order to secure his future ambitions.

Jane Fairfield is a laughingstock, albeit, a wealthy one.  She has made herself into a character so ridiculous, no one will want to marry her, despite her being an heiress.  Her reason for this is that she is living in her uncle's house by agreement only until she receives a marriage proposal.  Her younger sister, Emily, who is still under her uncle's guardianship, has a condition similar to epilepsy.  Uncle Titus has hired quack doctor upon quack doctor, trying to heal her. In doing so, he has subjected her to what amounts to torture.  Jane is determined to remove Emily as soon as she becomes of age. So, to ensure she remains single, and in control of her own fortune, she dresses grossly, appears stupid, commits social errors, and insults all and sundry.

Oliver and Jane meet at an event held by Lord Bradenton, whose support Oliver needs to kick start his career ambitions.  Jane performs her usual act, but Oliver continues to be kind to her, knowing how it feels to be the outsider.  Jane feels some regret, because Oliver seems a genuinely nice man, but she can't let her guard down.  After she leaves, Bradenton (who greatly enjoys having Oliver under his thumb) lets Oliver know what he has to do in order to gain his support.  He wants to see Jane so humiliated that she will not show her face in public again.  He has his own reasons for this, which we find out later.  Oliver is so ambitious, that he considers this.  He still hasn't made up his mind whether or not accept Bradenton's task.  He arranges to meet Jane on several occasions, and continues to be pleasant to her.  Eventually, they develop a friendship.  More surprisingly, he eventually tells Jane what he has been requested to do, and that he hasn't decided yet whether to do it.  Jane blatantly says she would never marry him, and in turn, he says she is not the kind of woman he needs for a wife to further his career.

The two continue to meet, and we see Jane begin to let her guard down and tell Oliver why she acts the way she does.  He is growing fond of her and has no desire to hurt her, but he still needs Bradenton's help.  He battles with himself about what he should do..  As they fall in love, their situation becomes more impossible.

Courtney Milan doesn't  write your typical romance.  Jane is prepared to give up any chance she has of future happiness for her sister.  Not only is she putting aside hope for having her own family, but she is an intelligent woman, and has made herself into an object of ridicule and scorn.  Oliver is a good man, who wants to make good changes.  Yet, he is a part of two worlds, but feels accepted in neither.  This, and his mistreatment while in school fuels his anger and desire for power.  Here are two strong people who don't seem to have a chance of happiness.  You can't help but admire their strength and their character, and wonder how it will be possible for them to be together.

I adored this book and recommend it highly.  Courtney Milan has become a favorite author.  She writes romances that touch your heart without insulting your intelligence.  I also recommend the novella, "The Governess Affair" which tells the story of Oliver's mother, and how he came to be.

Overall:  5 Stars (This is one I will read again and savor.)

Summary from the publisher:

From the author of the New York Times bestseller On the Island.

What if the life you wanted, and the woman you fell in love with, belonged to someone else?

Chris and Claire Canton’s marriage is on life support. Downsized during the recession and out of work for a year, Chris copes by retreating to a dark place where no one can reach him, not even Claire. When he’s offered a position that will keep him away from home four nights a week, he dismisses Claire’s concern that time apart could be the one thing their fragile union can’t weather. Their suburban life may look idyllic on the outside, but Claire has never felt so disconnected from Chris, or so lonely.

Local police officer Daniel Rush used to have it all, but now he goes home to an empty house every night. He pulls Claire over during a routine traffic stop, and they run into each other again at the 4th of July parade. When Claire is hired to do some graphic design work for the police department, her friendship with Daniel grows, and soon they’re spending hours together.

Claire loves the way Daniel makes her feel, and the way his face lights up when she walks into the room. Daniel knows that Claire’s marital status means their relationship will never be anything other than platonic. But it doesn’t take long before Claire and Daniel are in way over their heads, and skating close to the line that Claire has sworn she’ll never cross.

My Musings:

I was a big fan of Tracey Garvis-Graves’ debut romance ON THE ISLAND so when I saw she was writing a new book that wasn’t strictly romance, I wondered if it would be just as good a read. The first chapter of COVET was included as a bonus in UNCHARTED, the follow-up novella to ON THE ISLAND, and from the moment I read the first page, I was hooked. But I could not have anticipated just how much of an emotional read COVET would be once I had the opportunity to read the whole book.

I’m not ashamed to admit it: COVET didn’t just make me cry, it made me weep so uncontrollably that my husband kept trying to comfort me as I continued to read. Even now, it’s been over a week since I finished reading it, and I’m still starting to get all welled up again. This doesn’t mean that COVET will or should affect anyone else like that, but I’m telling you so you know what you might expect if the story of Claire and the two men she loves gets to you in the same way.

Claire Canton had a marriage and family so picture perfect that even their closest friends were envious. But now she is clinging to that life by her fingernails as the weight of her loneliness drags her ever downward. Her husband, Chris, had his whole identity wrapped up in being the family provider and as long as he was working, they were happy. When the bad economy finally reached his company and he spent the next 18 months unemployed, it was only by Claire’s determination and love that they managed to keep the family together and solvent, while she begged and threatened Chris in an attempt to pull him out of his dark emotional hole. Antidepressants are finally starting to make a real difference, but Chris’ desperation to get another job in his field leads him to accept the worst possible solution - a job that keeps him away from Claire and their children for days and weeks at a time.

After Daniel pulls Claire over for a burned out taillight, neither of them are able to forget the seemingly innocuous encounter. Daniel is initially drawn to Claire because she looks so much like the ex-wife who left him after an unspeakable tragedy. Claire is attracted to Daniel not only because he is “ridiculously good looking” but also because he gives her more attention in that one traffic stop than she’s gotten from her husband in months. As they are thrown together more and more, the physical attraction deepens into something they don’t know how to handle, and that’s when COVET becomes the story of how love can be both the best and worst thing ever.

What happens to Claire and Daniel and Chris is not particularly unique, but the way Tracey Garvis-Graves presents it with the thoughts and emotions of each character provides the compelling sense of psychological tragedy as Claire comes to love both men and Daniel struggles between what he wants and what is right. The series of events that lead up to the final denouement are shocking but not out of place, given what we’ve been shown all along the way, and the ending made sense, even if it wasn’t what I might have wanted. But above all, I was and am Team Claire, and she’s why COVET affected me so strongly and why it’s now the number one candidate for the best book I’ve read this year.

Monday's Muse

Monday, September 16

Frazzeled.  That's what I feel like after the last two weeks.  School has started again, and even though Little Love is back in school, and I thought I would have so much time now, I don't.  Main reason is because I have Sweet Pea to take care of during the days.  And I did a very bad thing :(

When she was tiny, just a few short months ago I held her when she slept.  I know.  I KNOW.  You don't need to say it.  Needless to say, I've started something bad.  She's now a little over 6 mos old and that is the only way she will nap.  I need to break the habit because all it seems that I get done during the day is take one to school, feed and nap Sweet Pea, have a bit of play time, feed and nap Sweet Pea, pick up Little Love from school. Help with homework, feed and nap Sweet Pea, then make dinner.  Finally at about 7 pm I can sit down and start on my design work which usually consumes about 4-6 hours of my night.  So you see, I NEED to recapture that nap time to get other things done so that I don't feel so frazzled.  NEED.

Tell me, for those of you who have, or had little ones.  How did you break a bad habit, and don't tell me to let her cry it out.  I absolutely can't do baby tears, add to the fact that she works herself up not down when I let her try to self sooth.  I'm a complete nanny disaster!  I need help :(

Please let me know if you have any helpful solutions and for that I will reward you with this week's Muse :)  I expect some really good tips afterwards!!

p.s. I just read a holiday romance where the hero is a contractor and wears a tool belt.  Anyone else find that as incredibly sexy as I do?

This week at Seductive Musings:
  • Tuesday:  I'll have Seductive Reviewer Michele's review of Covet by Tracey Garvis
  • Wednesday:  I'll have reviewer Andrea's review of Her Wicked Angel by Felicity E. Heaton
  • Thursday:  I'll Elaine's review of Escape from Obsession by Dixie Lynn Dwyer.  If you remember Michele recently reviewed that title so it will be interesting to see what Elaine thought of it.
  • Friday:  I have Little Love's 7th birthday party to prepare for :)  I can't believe she's 7!

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors with new releases this week!

Feature & Giveaway: The Dysfunctional Test by Kelly Moran

Thursday, September 12

You are cordially challenged to a test of true love.

Growing up in her large, crazy Serbian family, Camryn Covic became an expert at shutting down her emotions in order to maintain her sanity. But when she loses her apartment, her job and her boyfriend all in one day, she hits her breaking point.

Worse, if her family finds out she’s single again, her sister’s upcoming wedding will be a disaster. The bride-to-be has a plan, though. A plan that involves an old friend, a pretend relationship…and the probability of ending up in a padded cell. This time for real.

Troy Lanske agreed to the crazy plan only because, when he was a lonely foster child, Camryn was his lifeline. But she isn’t the idealistic girl he remembers. She’s become so jaded that she doesn’t even believe in love anymore.

He sets out to restore her faith in happily-ever-afters, but his plan backfires when the fake relationship begins to feel all too real. Falling for the one woman he can’t have could mean losing more than just his honorary family. He could lose everything.

Product Warnings:
Contains a Playgirl-material hero and a woman who thinks she couldn’t be any more wrong for him. Enter one “Big Fat Overly Romantic Serbian Family”. Sit back and watch the magic happen. Enjoy!

 Special Excerpt:

“What’s wrong?” she asked, worried the heat or altitude was getting to him. When they first exited the car she noticed how much thinner the air was. Perhaps he hadn’t adjusted yet.

“I have an idea, and you won’t like it.”

            “Then my answer is no.”

“You haven’t heard the idea yet.”

            “I don’t need to. If you think it’s a bad idea…”

“I didn’t say it was a bad idea. I said you wouldn’t like it.”

She crossed her arms. “Same difference.”

He looked un-amused. “Everyone is sitting across the yard over there. We can see them, which means they can see us. We need a public display.”

She didn’t like the sound of that. But before she could process fully, he slid an arm around her waist and drew her to him. Hard chest. Wall of hard chest. Now there was no air.

“Act like we’ve done this before,” he whispered.

            “Done what?”

“Kiss, Cam. Act like you’ve kissed me before.”

“How am I supposed to do…?”

The words died in her throat as his mouth closed over hers.

Review: Bannockburn Binding by Tracy Cooper-Posey

Title:  Bannockburn Binding
Author: Tracy Cooper-Posey
Series: Beloved Bloody Time
Genre: Paranormal
Publisher: Self Published
Format: E-book, Paperback
Date/Year:  December 14, 2011
Reviewed by:  Melissa

*This book was purchased by the reviewer for her own reading enjoyment

Summary from the publisher:

In the early 23rd Century, vampires learned how to travel back in time, and created a time-tsunami that threatened life as we know it, until they corrected their mistake. They created the Chronometric Conservation Agency, which is tasked with preserving history and therefore protecting humanity's future. The Touring arm of the Agency offers trips back into the real past, with vampire guides, called travellers.

When Natalia (Tally) Marta, vampire and traveller, takes her client to visit the siege of Stirling Castle in 1314, she is caught and held hostage for ransom by Robert MacKenzie, a Bruce clansman. Rob finds himself drawn to the wilful, stubborn and very different English lady he has captured and the relationship becomes an intimate, highly-charged sexual pairing. Swiftly, Tally and Rob realize their bond is more than sexual, that the emotions stirring their hearts are true.

Christian Lee Hamilton, vampire, one of the last true southern gentlemen, and Tally's ex-lover, knows the 1314 time marker enough to jump back and help Tally return home. His arrival at Bannockburn adds complications, for Christian finds himself drawn to Rob MacKenzie as much as Tally is. But neither of them can stay in the past forever. To do so means certain death.

My Musings:

When I read ‘vampire’ and ‘time travel’ in the description, I was curious.  Turns out, this is a melting pot of Sci-Fi and Paranormal with a touch of Historical.  The author writes this story with several primary characters and changes POV’s often.  I didn’t find it distracting at all.  Rather, it kept me wondering how the characters would tie together.

Tally, initially introduced as Natalie, is a vampire with an appetite – not for blood.  Tally goes back in time – part of her job – and meets Robs, a Scotsman.  Rob is an intelligent man that had an uncanny ability to read Tally and anticipate her actions, which I sometimes found unrealistic (yes, I know… like vampires are so real.)  Anyway, sparks fly and the temperature rises with some hot scenes between the two.

When Lee, a flame from Tally’s past is introduced, I thought it would be a love triangle.  Nope!  This is a no holes barred MMF romance.  I found the moments between Rob and Lee sweeter than most of the ones Rob and Tally shared.  The emotional involvement between Rob and Tally seemed a little lacking.  I want to feel a little yearning before the clothes come off.

Though this read entertained me, and kept me turning pages, it didn’t win my heart or my daydreams because of the weak emotional romance.  BUT it did keep me thinking after it ended.  I really liked that this was a vampire book with some pretty deep Sci-Fi elements.  This is a great start to a series and worth the read for those who like sci-fi and vampires.  A great mix!

Monday's Muse

Monday, September 9

I know I say this every year about this time, but where has the year gone?  I can't believe we are in September already.  It seems like just yesterday that the summer was just beginning, and here we's almost over.  The only good thing about that is that there are some stellar romance books coming out in the last three months of the year and I CAN'T WAIT.

A few weeks ago an online friend and I had a brief discussion about the best books we've read so far this year....and neither one of us could really find a standout.  It's not that the books I've read this year were bad, in fact I think that they were all fairly good.  And therein lies the problem.  They have all been pretty much the same, but I've not had one book so far this year that I've been over the moon for.  I do expect that to change at some point (I hope).  Do you have a favorite read so far this year?  And if so what was it?

Did I forget to mention that we have a new Muse this week?  We do :)

This week at Seductive Musings:
  • Tuesday:  New Seductive Reviewer Melissa will be making her review debut with Bannockburn Binding by Tracy Cooper-Posey
  • Wednesday:  New Seductive Reviewer Blue will be making her review debut with The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan.  I am reading this currently (and loving it) so I'll be interested to see what Blue thought of it.
  • Thursday:  Author Kelly Moran will be my guest to share with us her book The Dysfunctional Test
  • Friday:  I hope to have a Fun Friday post to share with you, but it will depend on how much free time I can find this week to prepare it :)

Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of the authors with new releases this week, especially Musings authors Beth Williamson, Stephanie Julian, Beth Kery, Jennifer Ashley

Summary from the publisher:

After leaving a restrictive religious community, Rachel Hill is on a mission to divest herself of her virginity. Newly independent and struggling to establish herself, she’s not looking for anything complicated. She bids on sexy SWAT officer Ben Harris at a bachelor auction, confident he’ll give her the night of her life and nothing more.

But Ben is jaded and detached, living his life in an endless cycle of danger-fueled adrenaline jags, drinking, and sex. When he misses the fact that his bachelor auction hookup is a virgin, he’s shocked by his obliviousness, and by the risk she took. To make amends, Ben offers Rachel all he can: a no-strings-attached sexual education.

Ben’s lessons introduce Rachel to down and dirty passion, but she’s searching for something more profound than sex, and she’s willing to walk away to find it. Ben can’t get Rachel out of his head, but will he come to terms with his troubled past and learn to love?

My Musings:

I’ve read everything that Anne Calhoun has published for nearly a year now, and every time I’ve been rewarded with yet another wonderfully engaging and passionate romance. Her latest book, UNCOMMON PASSION, features a pairing between two people who could not have seemed more different at first glance, but ultimately show they have more in common than anyone could have known.

Rachel Hill was born and raised in an isolated religious community (I think it’s fair to call it a cult) where women were taught to always defer to men and where she could only be alone in a room with her father or the group’s religious leader. After living her whole life under these restrictions, Rachel realized that her intelligence and innate veterinary talents with farm animals were worth more than what her father and religion dictated. The first brave act of her life was to take the money owed her for decades of back-breaking work and escape to the real world for an independent future. The second brave act of her life was to take the money she’d saved for vet school and bid it for a night with a man at the charity bachelor auction. Rachel isn’t looking for a date. She’s looking for a man who won’t have any problems going right to the bedroom for some quick and casual sex. After all, she doesn’t want a relationship, she just wants to not be a virgin.

Ben Harris is a troubled cop living only for the quick emotional fixes of danger and sex, both of which he gets in unhealthy quantities. He gets the danger fix from his job as a SWAT officer, taking so many unnecessary chances with his safety that his superiors threaten to remove him from the job. He gets his sex fix in his side job as the door bouncer at No Limits, the local dance club where people go to get drunk and get laid, usually in that order. Ben wasn’t even supposed to be on the bachelor list that night at the auction, but when he and Rachel make eye contact, she knows he’s the perfect choice for what she wants to buy with her hard earned money.

The “date” between Ben and Rachel goes pretty much as anticipated, with a quick dinner and an equally quick trip to Ben’s bedroom for some hard and fast sex. Rachel revels in the act that she knows she would never have experienced without leaving everything behind. Ben is relieved that she didn’t demand much of him and even left without having to be asked. But later when he realizes that she’d been a virgin, he somehow feels compelled to go back to her to ask for a do-over. It isn’t long before what started as a quick easy lay between strangers becomes an emotional journey between two lost souls afraid to see that what they have is so much more than sex.

The romance trope of a world-weary man providing sexual instruction to an innocent virgin is a common one, and one that I always enjoy. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen it with a woman who isn’t just an innocent to sex, but to adult life itself. Rachel is a truly remarkable heroine in that she has had to learn about so many things that most people take for granted. Her determination to experience everything an adult woman should have is what brings her to Ben’s bed and keeps her there when he insists on showing her everything she should know about pleasing herself and others in bed. Ben is over familiar with the adult world, to the point of seeming to have a death wish at times. Watching them become more attached to each other in spite of what they both insist they want is a wonderful experience and because this is an Anne Calhoun book, it is both beautifully written and incredibly moving. I loved every moment of UNCOMMON PASSION and recommend Anne Calhoun as one of the finest romance writers working today.

Review: No Reservations by Stephanie Julian

Title:  No Reservations*
Author: Stephanie Julian
Series: Salon Games #2
Genre: Contemporary erotic romance
Publisher: Berkley
Format: ebook and print

*This book was provided to reviewer by the publisher/author in exchange for an honest review.

Summary from the publisher:

Play by the rules and you’ll never get what you deserve.

Tyler Golden is all about control. It’s an attitude that helped him and his brother build Haven, a boutique hotel in Philadelphia. The only thing Tyler couldn’t control was his fiancée’s death. It left him emotionally guarded, and willing to go only so far with women: satisfying his sexual needs.

Kate Song knows the feeling. Her sole focus is her dream to be a lingerie designer. She’s not about to be distracted by any man. No matter who he is. Or how demanding. Or forceful. Or captivatingly sexy. Or so she thought.

Tyler has the power to make her dream come true. Who can say no to such a dominating personality? Who would want to? Not Kate. Offering her body for submission is one thing. But giving her heart and soul is another. Now Tyler may discover that the one woman who taught him to love again is the one woman he might not be able to keep.

My Musings:

This review will contain spoilers for BY PRIVATE INVITATION, the first book in the Salon Games series. You could read NO RESERVATIONS as a stand-alone book, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Stephanie Julian has become one of my favorite authors over the past year, due in no small part to BY PRIVATE INVITATION, the first book in her Salon Games series. In that book, we met the handsome successful Golden brothers, born to inherit an international hotel chain but choosing to go it alone so they could create Haven, their dream hotel in Philadelphia. Haven doesn’t cater to the very rich in the usual ways, as BY PRIVATE INVITATION showed us in intimate detail. There is a special salon in the most private area of "Haven", and it’s in the Salon where sexual fantasies of all kinds can be fulfilled among those fortunate enough to be invited there.

In the first book, we got to see Annabelle Elder and Jared Golden fall in love after meeting at a Haven’s New Year’s Eve party. This second book opens during that same event, just after Annabelle has left the table to dance with Jared. Still sitting at that table is her best friend, Kate Song, who had insisted on getting Annabelle out to celebrate the New Year while leaving her own fiancé back at home. When Jared’s brother, Tyler, spots the beautiful Kate sitting alone, he can’t resist going over to find out why she’s not having a good time at his party. Their mutual attraction is immediate, but Kate is engaged to Arnie, and she tries to make it clear that she’s not available. It’s only months later, after Kate has broken off her engagement and she sees Tyler again at Annabelle’s gallery premiere, that they renew their acquaintance and begin the complicated dance that will either end with them together in love or alone and broken-hearted.

Although NO RESERVATIONS doesn’t have the same sense of intrigue as BY PRIVATE INVITATION, especially with regard to the secrets of the Salon, the relationship between Tyler and Kate is  just as riveting and the emotional payoffs just as satisfying. We get more background on why the Golden brothers have broken away from their family’s inherited expectations and how the Salon fits into how they express themselves sexually. Both Kate and Tyler are ambitious in their own career paths, even if it doesn’t always appear so to the casual observer. The ways they have to work to balance their budding relationship with their personal goals are what drives the bulk of the story as we wait to see how they can have each other without betraying their individual dreams of success. It’s a wonderful give and take, and the love between them makes all the setbacks and misunderstandings worth suffering through to the gratifying happy ending.

NO RESERVATIONS is an enjoyable follow-up to BY PRIVATE INVITATION and I strongly recommend both books in the series. I don’t know if there will be another Salon Games book, but I do know that if there is, I will be reading it. (edited to add:  According to Ms. Julian's website there will be a third book in the series, tentatively titled OVER EXPOSED- Greg and Sabrina's story, in 2014).

Review: Everything for Us by M. Leighton

Title: Everything For Us*
Author: M. Leighton
Series: The Bad Boys #3
Genre: contemporary erotic romance
Publisher: Berkley
Format: ebook and print
Date/Year: September 3, 2013
Reviewed by: Michele
*This book was provided to reviewer by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Summary from the publisher:

Olivia Townsend’s wealthy cousin Marissa had everything a girl could ask for—a great job, a privileged life, and all the friends she wanted. Or, at least, all the friends money could buy. But one case of mistaken identity has turned her privileged world upside down.

An abduction gone wrong lands her right in the lap of the sexiest, most dangerous man she’s ever met. To Marissa, he’s an enigma, but one to whom she’s irresistibly, inexplicably drawn.

With him comes a new world of freedom and passion, of dark shadows and dangerous secrets, a world where nothing is what it seems—except for the blind passion that Marissa can’t escape—or maybe even survive.

My Musings:

EVERYTHING FOR US is the conclusion to the Bad Boys trilogy and is in no way a stand-alone book. This review contains significant spoilers for DOWN TO YOU and UP TO ME, the first two books in the series.

EVERYTHING FOR US picks up not long after the rescue of Marissa, Olivia’s cousin who had been kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity in the previous book, UP TO ME. After all the suspense, violence and exposed secrets in the first two Bad Boys books, this conclusion to the story of Cash and Nash Davenport is almost sedate by comparison.

Identity is an ongoing theme in this trilogy, where we were first led to believe that Cash and Nash were twin brothers, half-orphaned by the Russian mobsters who had killed their mother and gotten their father sent to prison for her murder. When we found out that Cash was posing as his dead brother Nash, it was obviously quite a surprise. But then we found out later on that Nash was actually still alive, and ready for revenge against everyone who had ruined his life and destroyed his family. Meanwhile Olivia had fallen for Cash at the same time he was still also posing as Nash, and her cousin Marissa was dating the person she thought was Nash when it was really Cash.

It really isn’t as confusing as it sounds when you try to explain it, but suffice it to say that in this third book, all the identity switching becomes the linchpin for what happens between Marissa and Nash, and how the threat from the Russian mobsters is eventually neutralized once and for all.

Marissa’s problem has always been that she was the rich snooty one who had been groomed by her equally rich and snooty father to think only of what was best for her family’s financial and political aspirations. She treated everyone she considered her inferior with thinly veiled contempt, including her cousin Olivia, with thinly veiled contempt. What Marissa didn’t realize is that the person she thought was Nash was dating her solely as cover so that nobody would suspect he was actually someone else.

Nash has returned to help rescue Marissa and reclaim the life his brother had been living for him over the past seven years. What he didn’t anticipate was that the part of that life he ended up wanting to claim most was Marissa herself. But Nash still has one big secret left unrevealed, one that has the power to end a relationship with Marissa once she knows the full truth.

Although EVERYTHING FOR US is a satisfying conclusion to the complicated plot involving the Davenport brothers and the Russian mob, it just didn’t have the same driving force behind it for me as much as the previous books in the trilogy. After all the twists and turns that came before it, this conclusion to the story was almost anticlimactic by comparison. It’s as if the first two were the crazy roller coaster ride and the third was the slow straight glide down to the end of the line. There is a lot of interesting character development for both Marissa and Nash, and their intimate scenes together are smoking hot and full of emotional depth. But the sense of danger was gone, and that made this book just an okay read for me.
